Abstract: Examine the impacts of age, diabetes, gender, and access type on vascular access (VA) associated costs among Chinese hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: We retrospectively included patients whose first permanent VA was created at the West China Hospital. Clinical characteristics, maturation, intervention, utilization, and exchange of every VA, as well as VA-related infection were collected. The study period for each patient was from HD initiation to the last follow-up. VA-related costs, including those for placement and intervention procedures, were calculated according to the standards set in 2019 for Chinese tertiary hospitals. Mann-Whitney U and Chi-square tests were conducted for comparisons between groups. Results: A total of 358 Chinese HD patients experienced functionally 143 arteriovenous fistula (AVF), 22 arteriovenous graft (AVG), and 439 tunneled cuffed central venous catheter (tcCVC) during a median study period of 26 (IQR 13–44) months, of which 42.5% used more than one permanent VA. The median annual VA-related cost in the groups of age 〉 75 years and ⩽75 years, diabetes and non-diabetes, male and female, was $525 and $397 ( p = 0.016), $459 and $462 ( p = 0.64), $476 and $445 ( p = 0.94), respectively. The median monthly costs for AVF ($18), AVG ($289), and tcCVC ($37) were significantly different. Conclusion: HD patients aged 〉 75 years had significantly higher annual VA-related costs. However, the annual VA-related costs did not differ across the diabetes groups or the gender groups. AVF was the most cost-effective permanent VA type in China, partly due to the inexpensive materials used compared to AVG or tcCVC.

Abstract: Serenoa repens, the extract of berry in Southeastern United States, is one of several phytotherapeutic agents available for the treatment of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In this study, we found for the first time that Serenoa repens effectively inhibited the growth of human U87 and U251 glioma cells. Flow cytometry assay showed that Serenoa repens induced apoptosis of U87 and U251 glioma cells in a dose-dependent manner. Also, Serenoa repens increased the expression of cleaved-PARP, Caspase-3 or p27 protein in these two cell lines, respectively. In addition, we found that Serenoa repens down-regulated basal level of phosphorylated form of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT 3) in both U87 and U251 glioma cells. Furthermore, it was discovered that a Janus family of tyrosine kinase (JAK) inhibitor AG490 inhibit the growth of human U87 and U251 glioma cells and AG490 enhanced the ability of Serenoa repens to inhibit the growth of U87 and U251 glioma cells as measured by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. These results indicate that Serenoa repens reduces the growth, causes apoptosis of Glioma cells and inhibits STAT 3 signaling. In addition, it might also be useful for the treatment of individuals with glioma.

Abstract: The value of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT)-based radiomics in renal lesions is unknown. Purpose To develop DECT-based radiomic models and assess their incremental values in comparison to conventional measurements for differentiating enhancing from non-enhancing small renal lesions. Material and Methods A total of 349 patients with 519 small renal lesions (390 non-enhancing, 129 enhancing) who underwent contrast-enhanced nephrographic phase DECT examinations between June 2013 and January 2020 on multiple DECT platforms were retrospectively recruited. Cohort A included all lesions, while cohort B included Bosniak II–IV and solid enhancing renal lesions. Radiomic models were built with features selected by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression (LASSO). ROC analyses were performed to compare the diagnostic accuracy among conventional and radiomic models for predicting enhancing renal lesions. Results The individual iodine concentration (IC), normalized IC, mean attenuation on 75-keV images, radiomic model of iodine images, 75-keV images and a combined model integrating all the above-mentioned features all demonstrated high AUCs for predicting renal lesion enhancement in cohort A (AUCs = 0.934–0.979) as well as in the test dataset (AUCs = 0.892–0.962) of cohort B ( P values with Bonferroni correction 〉 0.003). The AUC (0.864) of mean attenuation on 75-keV images was significantly lower than those of other models (all P values ≤0.001) except the radiomic model of 75-keV images ( P = 0.038) in the training dataset of cohort B. Conclusion No incremental value was found by adding radiomic and machine learning analyses to iodine images for differentiating enhancing from non-enhancing renal lesions.

Abstract: To investigate the risk factors and biomechanical mechanisms of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in central venous occlusive disease (CVOD). Patients and methods: This retrospective study consecutively included 77 maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients with CVOD who received the first percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with stenting (PTS) due to symptomatic CVOD in a tertiary hospital. The mean age was 59.7 ± 14.0 years, and 51.9% of patients were male. The clinical characteristics, occurrence of ISR and patency rates were recorded. Finite element method was applied to assess the biomechanical properties of stents. Results: Among 77 patients with a mean CVS score of 8.0 ± 2.8, 20.8%, 62.3%, and 16.9% of patients had the main vein of CVOD in the subclavian vein, brachiocephalic vein, and superior vena cava, respectively. A total of 72 (93.5%) patients received successful PTS treatment, for which the stents implanted were mainly Fluency covered stent (48.6%) and SMART bare stent (31.9%). During 15 (10–24)-months of follow-up, ISR occurred in 36.1% of the 72 patients. The primary and assisted primary patency rates at 6, 12, and 18 months were 78%, 56%, 42% and 95%, 90%, 87%, respectively. A prolonged dialysis vintage was an independent risk factor for ISR, yet the stent type or the main vein location was not correlated with ISR. Among three laser-engraving stents, the SMART stent was the best in terms of flexibility, stress, and strain on stents but worst in stress or strain on vessels. The Luminexx stent was the best in radial force and worst in stress or strain on stents. The Vici stent was the best in stress and strain on vessels and worst in radial force and flexibility. Conclusions: An unsatisfactory comprehensive biomechanical performance from configurations rooted in existing stents may account for the high incidence of ISR in CVOD.

Abstract: Humans are averse to both having less (i.e., disadvantageous inequity aversion [IA]) and having more than others (i.e., advantageous IA). However, the social-affective traits that drive individual differences in IA are not well understood. Here, by combining a modified dictator game and a computational model, we found in a sample of incarcerated adolescents ( N = 67) that callous-unemotional traits were specifically associated with low advantageous but not disadvantageous IA. We replicated and extended the finding in a large-scale university student sample ( N = 2,250) by adopting a dimensional approach to social-affective trait measures. We showed that advantageous IA was strongly and negatively associated with a trait dimension characterized by callousness and lack of social emotions (e.g., guilt and compassion). A supportive family environment negatively correlated with this trait dimension and positively with advantageous IA. These results identify a core set of social-affective dimensions specifically associated with advantageous IA.

Abstract: To reveal the relationship between rough tooth surface microstructure characteristics and contact performance, contact analysis is carried out based on the measured surface topography of the tooth surface of ultrasonic grinding by utilizing the elastic-plastic contact mechanics and statistical correlation analysis theory. Simple correlation analysis and partial correlation analysis are adopted for the gear three-dimensional surface roughness parameters and the maximum Mises stress and maximum shear stress. Then, the method of stepwise regression analysis and path analysis is used to construct the best fitting linear model of 3D roughness parameters and the maximum Mises stress and maximum shear stress, and the parameters’ decision coefficient is obtained. The research shows: (1) the rank of comprehensive influence factors of the maximum Mises stress is as follows: arithmetical mean height ( Sa), peak material portion ( Smr1), maximum peak height ( Sp), reduced peak height ( Spk), and minimum curvature radius and height ratio ( K), where Smr1, Spk, and K are negatively correlated with the maximum Mises stress; (2) the comprehensive influence variables of the maximum shear stress are in the order of Sa, Spk, and Vmp, among which Spk and Vmp are inversely related to the maximum shear stress.

Abstract: Group-level metacognitive scaffolding is critical for productive knowledge building. However, previous research mainly focuses on the individual-level metacognitive scaffoldings in helping learners improve knowledge building, and little effort has been made to develop group-level metacognitive scaffolding (GMS) for knowledge building. This research designed three group-level metacognitive scaffoldings of general, task-oriented, and idea-oriented scaffoldings to facilitate in-service teachers’ knowledge building in small groups. A mixed method is used to examine the effects of the GMSs on groups’ knowledge building processes, performances, and perceptions. Results indicate a complication of the effects of GMSs on knowledge building. The idea-oriented scaffolding has potential to facilitate question-asking and perspective-proposing inquiry through peer interactions; the general scaffolding does not necessarily lessen teachers’ idea-centered explanation and elaboration on the individual level; the task-oriented scaffolding has the worst effect. Pedagogical and research implications are discussed to foster knowledge building with the support of GMSs.

Abstract: The association between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and sinusitis has been widely studied; however, research on SDB-related sleep problems and sinusitis are limited. This study aims to determine the relationship between SDB-related sleep problems, SDB symptom score, and sinusitis. Methods After the screening, data were analyzed from 3414 individuals (≥20 years) from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey questionnaire. Data on snoring, daytime sleepiness, obstructive sleep apnea (snorting, gasping, or cessation of breathing while sleeping), and sleep duration were analyzed. The SDB symptom score was determined based on a summary of the scores of the above four parameters. Pearson chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used in statistical analyses. Results After adjusting for confounders, self-reported sinusitis was strongly correlated with frequent apneas (OR: 1.950; 95% CI: 1.349–2.219), excessive daytime sleepiness (OR: 1.880; 95% CI: 1.504–2.349), and frequent snoring (OR: 1.481; 95% CI: 1.097–2.000). Compared to an SDB symptom score of 0, the higher the SDB symptom score, the higher the risk of self-reported sinusitis. For the subgroup analyses, this association was significant in females and across ethnic groups. Conclusion In the United States, SDB is significantly associated with self-reported sinusitis in adults. In addition, our study suggests that patients with SDB should be aware of the risk of developing sinusitis.

Abstract: A new series of paeonol derivatives containing the 1,4-benzoxazinone and 1,2,3-triazole moieties were synthesized and evaluated for their cytotoxicity in vitro against human non-small cell lung cancer NCI-H1299 cells and human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells. Among them, compared with that of paeonol, compounds 8-acetyl-4-{[(1-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]methyl}-5-methoxy-2 H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4 H)-one, 8-acetyl-4-[(1-mesityl-1 H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl] -5-methoxy-2 H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4 H)-one, and 8-acetyl-5-methoxy-4-{[(1-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1 H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]methyl}-2 H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4 H)-one exhibited significant inhibitory activity toward the human non-small cell lung cancer NCI-H1299 cells (IC 50  = 13.36 ± 0.003, 19.75 ± 0.3, 15.79 ± 0.05 μg mL −1 ). The last compound also exhibited significant inhibitory activity toward the human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells (IC 50  = 19.73 ± 1.0 μg mL −1 ).
