    Abstract: Background: Brain exposure to ionizing radiation during the radiotherapy of brain tumor or metastasis of peripheral cancer cells to the brain has resulted in cognitive dysfunction by reducing neurogenesis in hippocampus. The water extract of Lycium barbarum berry (Lyc), containing water-soluble Lycium barbarum polysaccharides and flavonoids, can protect the neuronal injury by reducing oxidative stress and suppressing neuroinflammation. Reseach Design: To demonstrate the long-term radioprotective effect of Lyc, we evaluated the neurobehavioral alterations and the numbers of NeuN, calbindin (CB), and parvalbumin (PV) immunopositive hippocampal neurons in BALB/c mice after acute 5.5 Gy radiation with/without oral administration of Lyc at the dosage of 10 g/kg daily for 4 weeks. Results: The results showed that Lyc could improve irradiation-induced animal weight loss, depressive behaviors, spatial memory impairment, and hippocampal neuron loss. Immunohistochemistry study demonstrated that the loss of NeuN-immunopositive neuron in the hilus of the dentate gyrus, CB-immunopositive neuron in CA1 strata radiatum, lacunosum moleculare and oriens, and PV-positive neuron in CA1 stratum pyramidum and stratum granulosum of the dentate gyrus after irradiation were significantly improved by Lyc treatment. Conclusion: The neuroprotective effect of Lyc on those hippocampal neurons may benefit the configuration of learning related neuronal networks and then improve radiation induced neurobehavioral changes such as cognitive impairment and depression. It suggests that  Lycium barbarum berry may be an alternative food supplement to prevent radiation-induced neuron loss and neuropsychological disorders.

    Abstract: The eosinophil (Eo) activation is a crucial factor evoking allergic rhinitis (AR) attacks; factors; the mechanism of triggering Eo activation remains to be further investigated. The interaction of antigen (Ag) and antibody plays a critical role in evoking allergy attacks. This study aims to elucidate the role of FcγRI, the high affinity receptor of IgG, in the Ag-mediated Eo activation. Methods Nasal lavage fluids (NLF) were collected from AR patients and healthy control (HC) subjects. Eos were isolated by flow cytometry cell sorting and analyzed by pertinent immunological approaches. Results Eos composed more than 60% of the cellular components in AR NLF. Exposure to specific Ags (sAgs) in the culture triggered Eos to release inflammatory mediators. High levels of FcγRI were detected on the surface of AR NLF Eos. Exposure to lipopolysaccharide markedly increased the FcγRI expression in naive Eos, which could be bound by Ag-specific IgG (sIgG) to form complexes on the surface of Eos; this made Eos at the sensitized status. Eos bore with the sIgG/FcγRI complexes could be activated upon exposure to sIgG in the culture; these Eos can be designated as Ag-specific Eos. Passive transfer of Ag-specific Eos resulted in profound AR response in mice upon sAg challenge. Depletion of FcγRI on Eos efficiently abolished AR response in mice. Conclusions AR Eos express high levels FcγRI, that can be bound by sIgG to make Eos sensitized. Re-exposure to specific Ags can activate the sensitized Eos.

    Abstract: The H7N9 strain of bird flu is a new type of avian flu that was identified at the end of March 2013. The disease is concerning because most patients have become severely ill. Purpose To study the X-ray and computed tomography (CT) findings of early H7N9 avian influenza cases. Material and Methods Chest radiography and CT were performed in six patients with H7N9 avian influenza within 1–20 days after onset. The CT examinations included conventional spiral CT and high-resolution CT. The findings on the radiography and CT images were analyzed. Results Abnormal X-ray and CT findings were present in all of the patients. All of the cases had acute onset. In the early stage, the right lung was more commonly affected (particularly in the right upper and middle lobes). The lesions rapidly expanded to the entire lungs and were characterized primarily by ground-glass opacities (GGOs) combined with consolidation. Diffuse GGO was observed in all six cases (1 was symmetric, and 5 were non-symmetric). Local consolidation was found in four cases, and lobar consolidation was found in two cases. Normal lung tissue was observed between the lesions. Pleural thickening was common and was combined with pleural/pericardial effusion or mediastinal lymph node enlargement. Reticular changes, centrilobular nodules, and the tree-in-bud sign were observed in some cases, but reticular changes, bronchial wall thickening, and hyperinflation were not found. Conclusion Radiological changes associated with both acute pneumonia and acute interstitial inflammation were observed in early H7N9 avian influenza cases. Serial chest X-rays were useful for the diagnosis and severity assessment of the disease. CT may provide a more accurate assessment of the lung pathology.

    Abstract: Cholesterol import into mitochondria through the translocator protein (18 KDa) (TSPO) is the starting point and an important rate-limiting step in neurosteroidogenesis. For this reason TSPO has received increased attention in the pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In an effort to explore the role of TSPO in mediating the anti-PTSD effect, we first assessed the effects of the TSPO ligand AC-5216 in alleviating the enhanced anxiety and fear response in a time-dependent sensitization (TDS) procedure, a rat PTSD animal model. In the present study, we showed that chronic treatment with AC-5216 caused significant suppression of the enhanced anxiety and contextual fear induced in post-TDS rats; these effects were blocked by PK11195. Furthermore, AC-5216 treatment increased the levels of allopregnanolone in the serum, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus of post-TDS rats, and these effects were antagonized by PK11195. These results demonstrate that AC-5216 has a clear anti-PTSD-like effect, which might be partially mediated by binding to TSPO and the subsequent synthesis of allopregnanolone.

    Abstract: Low-frequency content of the output signal is very helpful in seismic exploration. In this study, method and application are conducted to extend the bandwidth of a seismic vibrator toward low frequency. Factors limiting vibrator’s low-frequency extension are studied, and stroke load capacity and pump-displacement load capacity are proposed and act as vibrator’s low-frequency performance evaluation indexes. Low-frequency performances of five seismic vibrators available in the market are analyzed. Then, multi-objective optimization is used to extend low frequency, and a newly designed seismic vibrator EV56 is developed based on this method. Results show that stroke load capacities of these vibrators are not much different, and all are beyond 5 Hz at 100% level. Moreover, none of the vibrators reaches a frequency lower than 8 Hz at a full pump-displacement load capacity. Through the optimization, the ground force increases by 8.55%, and the standard deviation of the ground force is reduced by 32.99%. Compared to other five vibrators, the EV56 vibrator generates more than twice the output force at 70% drive force level of 3 Hz and improves more than one full-load capacity octave. Field test shows that compared to a conventional seismic vibrator, the EV56 vibrator is more helpful to discover and reflect the underground structure.

    Abstract: Patients with multiple infarct dementia (MID) have subtle deficits that commonly go unnoticed, and are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Oxidative stress induced by ischaemic injury results in intracellular calcium accumulation and neuronal apoptosis, leading to cognitive impairment by triggering various cellular signal transduction pathways. Several studies have suggested that NF-κB in the presence of p53 has a pro-apoptotic function in various models, but the mechanism is unclear. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate whether acupuncture could protect cognitive function against cerebral multi-infarction (CMi) induced oxidative stress by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and its target gene p53. Methods: An animal model of CMi was established by injecting homologous blood emboli into the right internal carotid artery of male Wistar rats. After 2 weeks of acupuncture treatment, cognitive function was detected by novel object recognition. Electron spin resonance and Fluo-3 fuorescence imaging were used to test the generation of ROS and intracellular calcium accumulation, respectively. Expression of NF-κB and p53 was examined by Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence. Results: CMi induced spatial learning and memory impairment, overproduction of intracellular hydroxyl radicals, and elevations of Ca 2+ , which were ameliorated by verum acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture inhibited activation of NF-κB and its downstream target gene p53. Conclusion: These findings suggest that acupuncture could protect cognitive function against oxidative stress induced by CMi, which is partially associated with suppression of NF-κB-p53 activation.

    Abstract: To investigate the changing pattern of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction subtypes and its time trend relationship with that of reflux esophagitis over 10 years at a tertiary medical center in China. Methods and study design The medical records of all patients who underwent gastroscopy from 2000 to 2009 were reviewed. Subtypes of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction according to Siewert's classification, gastric non-cardiac adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, reflux esophagitis and Helicobacter pylori infection were diagnosed according to the results of gastroscopy and mucosal histopathology. All the patients were divided into three cohorts (cohort A [2000–2003], cohort B [2004–2006] ), cohort C [2007–2009]), and the proportion of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction and its subtypes in all upper gastrointestinal tumors (adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction, gastric non-cardiac adenocarcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma) in each cohort were compared. The annual percentages of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction, reflux esophagitis and H pylori in all patients were also compared. Results 70,073 patients (cohort A, n = 20298, cohort B, n = 20443, cohort C, n = 29332) who underwent gastroscopy were reviewed. Totally there were 279 patients with adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (0.398%, M:F = 5.6:1), 794 gastric non-cardiac adenocarcinoma patients (1.133%, M:F = 2:1), 366 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients (0.522%, M:F = 3.4:1) and 4681 reflux esophagitis patients. Among the three subtypes of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction, only type I adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction in upper GI tumors exhibited increasing trend over time (1.86%, 3.39% and 4.94% for cohort A, B and C, respectively, P = 0.009). According to the WHO classification of histological types, the tubular types of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction have decreased (P = 0.008), whereas papillary type (P = 0.001) increased. The annual detection rate of type I adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction appeared to be positively correlated with reflux esophagitis (r = 0.846, P = 0.002) and negatively with H pylori infection (r = -0.785, P = 0.007) in time trend. Conclusions Over a recent 10-year period, the three subtypes of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction showed different changing trends, suggesting heterogeneous characteristics of the three Siewert types of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction.

    Abstract: A clustering method that combined density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise with mathematical morphology clustering is proposed to adapt to the features of driver’s fixation such as points’ dispersion and fixation regions’ irregularity and solve the problems of conventional density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise method’s large influence by parameters and mathematical morphology clustering’s needs of much manual intervention. Drivers’ fixation data were collected by Smart Eye Pro 5.7 eye tracking system, and the data were processed and clustered using conventional clustering methods and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise–mathematical morphology clustering method. The results show that the method proposed in this article takes into account the advantages of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise and mathematical morphology clustering to cluster irregular regions and makes up for defects of conventional clustering methods. It is verified that density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise–mathematical morphology clustering method is better than the conventional hierarchical clustering method and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise method in driver’s fixation points clustering and can improve the quality of driver’s fixation region division.

    Abstract: The chemical composition, contact and repellent activities of the essential oil from Murraya microphylla branches and leaves against Lasioderma serricorne adults were determined and six compounds from the essential oil were isolated as well. The essential oil of M. microphylla obtained by hydrodistillation was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis; 22 compounds were identified. The main constituents of the essential oil included β-caryophyllene (18.0%), α-pinene (13.8%), spathulenol (9.5%), α-humulene (6.0%), γ-elemene (5.1%) and zingiberene (4.6%), followed by α-cadinol (3.9%) and caryophyllene oxide (3.8%). Six of these compounds were isolated and fully identified as α-pinene, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, caryophyllene oxide, spathulenol and α-cadinol. L. serricorne adults had different sensitivities to the crude essential oil and isolated compounds. α-Humulene exhibited the strongest contact activity against L. serricorne, showing an LD 50 value of 13.1 μg adult −1 . However, spathulenol, the crude essential oil and α-cadinol showed stronger contact activity against L. serricorne than caryophyllene oxide and β-caryophyllene. The essential oil, α-humulene and spathulenol showed comparable repellency against L. serricorne adults at 2 h after exposure, relative to the positive control, DEET. The results demonstrate that the essential oil and isolated compounds exhibited important contact and repellent activities against L. serricorne. Thus, they could become potential natural insecticides or repellents for control of insects in stored products.
