    Abstract: To investigate CUE domain containing 2 ( CUEDC2) expression in colorectal cancer with different invasion and migration abilities. Methods Fresh colon cancer tissues, obtained from patients with or without lymph node metastasis who were treated at the Department of General Surgery, Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital, and SW620 and HT29 colorectal cancer cell lines, were analysed for CUEDC2 expression. Results Real-time polymerase chain reaction showed significantly higher CUEDC2 mRNA levels in colon cancer tissue from patients with ( n = 8) versus without ( n = 8) lymph node metastasis, and in SW620 versus HT29 cells. Western blots revealed significantly higher CUEDC2 protein levels in colon cancer tissues from patients with versus without lymph node metastasis, and in SW620 versus HT29 cells. Colorectal cancer tissues from patients with lymph node metastasis showed more intense immunohistochemical staining and moderate staining of cell nuclei and cytoplasm versus less intense/weak staining in tissues from patients without lymph node metastasis. Conclusions CUEDC2 is highly expressed in colorectal cancer tissues and colorectal cancer cell lines with high invasion and migration ability. CUEDC2 may be involved in promoting invasion and metastasis in colorectal cancer.

    Abstract: Palliative chemotherapy has been the mainstay treatment for patients with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (R/M-NPC). However, little is known about the efficacy and toxicity of nimotuzumab (NTZ) – a monoclonal antibody drug targeting epidermal growth factor receptor – plus chemotherapy (CT) versus CT alone for these patients. Methods: The database at Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences was queried for patients diagnosed with NPC who received CT with or without NTZ between 2004 and 2018. Treatment compliance, survival outcomes, and adverse effects were compared among these groups. Results: Records of 70 patients with R/M-NPC were reviewed: 21 (30%) received NTZ plus CT (NTZ+CT) and 49 (70%) received CT. CT regimens included gemcitabine plus platinum, taxane plus platinum (TP), and fluorouracil plus platinum. Comparing the CT group with NTZ+CT group, the median follow up was 62 months (range = 3–133) versus 59 months (range = 9–117); median progression free survival was 7.5 [95% confidence interval (CI) 6.552–8.381] months versus 8.5 (95% CI 6.091–10.976) months, p = 0.424; median overall survival (OS) was 25.6 (95% CI 18.888–32.379) months versus 48.6 (95% CI 35.619–61.581) months, p = 0.017, respectively. Multivariable analysis established treatment group (CT versus NTZ+CT) as an independent prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio, 0.5; 95% CI 0.255–0.979; p = 0.043). No significant difference with regard to toxicities was observed between the two groups. Among them, a subgroup analysis was performed in 53 (75.7%) patients who received TP with or without NTZ, which showed similar results. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that NTZ+CT provides a novel treatment option and prolongs survival significantly for R/M-NPC.

    Abstract: This paper presents a magnetically coupling bending-torsion piezoelectric energy harvester based on vortex-induced vibration from low-speed wind. The theoretical model of the energy harvester was formulated and validated by wind tunnel experiments. Numerical and experimental results showed that the power output and bandwidth of the proposed harvester are improved about 180% and 230% respectively compared with the nonmagnetic coupling harvester. Furthermore, the effects of cylinder, piezoelectric layer, load resistance, and magnetic nonlinear parameters on the harvester were investigated based on the distributed parameter model. The results showed that the length of cylinder hardly affect output power, but the diameter of cylinder presented complicated influences. The width of piezoelectric beam was negatively correlated with the torsion angle. With increasing the length of piezoelectric layer, an optimal wind velocity and load resistance can be obtained for the maximum output power. With decreasing of the distance between two magnets, the resonant bandwidth, the optimal power output, and torsion angle can be enhanced, respectively. Besides, the magnetic potential energy increased owing to the magnetically coupling, which led to the improvement of onset speed for the energy harvester. This study provides a guideline on improving the performance of bending-torsion vibration piezoelectric energy harvester.

    Abstract: To compare the effectiveness, adverse effects, and cost-effectiveness of percutaneous neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) versus traditional medication strategies for the treatment of patients with advanced cancer having severe upper abdominal cancer pain. Methods: This retrospective study included 81 patients with advanced upper abdominal cancer admitted to The Sixth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University between January 2013 and July 2014. The patients were divided into percutaneous NCPB (treatment) and medication for pain (control) groups. The outcomes were measured in terms of Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score and Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score before treatment and on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 28th days posttreatment. The effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the therapy were assessed using analysis of the health economics. Results: The improvements in NRS score (1.42 ± 1.09 vs 4.03 ± 0.96, P 〈 .01) and KPS score (65.55 ± 9.09 vs 63.03 ± 8.961, P 〈 .01) in the treatment group were significantly superior compared to the control group on the 7th day of treatment, followed by no significant difference between the 2 groups on the 14th and the 28th day of treatment. Health economics evaluation revealed that the medicine-specific costs and total health care costs were significantly reduced in the treatment group compared to the control group ( P 〈 .05), but no significant differences between the 2 groups ( P 〉 .05) were seen in the costs of hospitalization, examinations, and treatment. Conclusion: The percutaneous NCPB method shows promising results and better cost-effectiveness for treating patients with advanced cancer having severe upper abdominal pain.

    Abstract: Prevalence of co-infecting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among patients newly diagnosed with anogenital warts is under-reported. Our objective is to determine the prevalence of six common STIs, Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Mycoplasma genitalium (MG), genital herpes (herpes simplex virus type 2 [HSV-2]), HIV, and syphilis for patients visiting a sexual health clinic in Guangzhou, China. Demographics, sexual health, and medical histories were collected at patient intake. Patients diagnosed with anogenital warts (N = 200) were invited to participate. We collected urine samples, and urethral, cervical, and rectal swabs to test for CT, NG, and MG, and blood samples for serological detection of HSV-2, syphilis, and HIV. Overall 49 (24.5%) had a co-infection (22.2% of men and 27.7% of women). All six STIs were observed among men: CT (6.8%), NG (3.4%), MG (5.1%), HIV (4.3%), HSV-2 (4.3%), and syphilis (1.7%). Women had fewer STIs, but at higher rates: CT (13.3%), MG (6.0%), and HSV-2 (8.4%). Individual men had up to two co-infections, while women had no more than one co-infection. Chlamydia was the most common STI. Patients aged 18–25 years (35.4%) had the highest prevalence. Although opportunistic screening is often applied for high-risk groups, expansion to patients with anogenital warts in all health-care settings would improve detection of problematic asymptomatic co-infections, thereby increasing China’s capacity to contribute toward global surveillance systems.

    Abstract: Combination of metolazone (0.5 mg) and valsartan (80 mg) has been verified as a promising therapy treatment for hypertension. In order to facilitate to pharmacokinetic research, it needs a method for the simultaneously determination of metolazone and valsartan in biological samples. However, there are no relative reports so far. In order to facilitate to pharmacokinetic research, an on-line solid phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous determination of metolazone and valsartan in beagle dog plasma was developed and validated in this study. An on-line solid phase extraction column Retain PEP Javelin (10 mm × 2.1 mm) was used to remove impurities in plasma samples. The metolazone, valsartan and internal standard (losartan) were separated on a Poroshell 120 SB-C18 column (4.6 mm × 50 mm × 2.7 µm) with a gradient elution procedure. Acidified acetonitrile/water mixture was used as a mobile phase. The selected multiple-reaction monitoring mode in positive ion was performed and the parent to the product transitions m/z 366/259, m/z 436.2/291 and m/z 423.4/207 were used to measure the metolazone, valsartan and losartan. The method was linear over the range of 0.1–100 ng/mL and 1–1000 ng/mL for metolazone and valsartan, respectively. This method was validated in terms of specificity, linearity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, matrix effect, and stability and then successfully applied to pharmacokinetic studies of the metolazone and valsartan combination tablets in beagle dogs.

    Abstract: As a hydraulic energy recovery device, pump as turbine(PAT) has been applied widely in the seawater desalination and petrochemical industry. In order to improve the hydraulic performances, the blade inlet angle was redesigned by analyzing the velocity triangle of PAT impeller inlet, and an S-blade was proposed. Then, A new S-blade impeller was obtained by optimizing the impeller in a real case of centrifugal pump as turbine application, and it was compared with the original impeller through experiments. The results show that the efficiency of the new S-blade impeller is around 3% higher than that of the original blade with the fixed flow rate and head. Under the fixed speed, the shaft power of the new S-blade impeller is higher than that of the original blade, and the maximum deviation is 0.75 kW. The study could have important directive significance to blade optimization of PAT.

    Abstract: Nonlinear mixed-effects modeling is a popular approach to describe the temporal trajectory of repeated measurements of clinical endpoints collected over time in clinical trials, to distinguish the within-subject and the between-subject variabilities, and to investigate clinically important risk factors (covariates) that may partly explain the between-subject variability. Due to the complex computing algorithms involved in nonlinear mixed-effects modeling, estimation of covariate effects is often time-consuming and error-prone owing to local convergence. We develop a fast and accurate estimation method based on empirical Bayes estimates from the base mixed-effects model without covariates, and simple regressions outside of the nonlinear mixed-effect modeling framework. Application of the method is illustrated using a pharmacokinetic dataset from an anticoagulation drug for the prevention of major cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Both the application and extensive simulations demonstrated that the performance of this high-throughput method is comparable to the commonly used maximum likelihood estimation in nonlinear mixed-effects modeling.

    Abstract: We reconstructed a multiproxy record of the Holocene climate changes from a 9.53 m core from Bosten Lake in the southern Xinjiang of northwestern China based on a chronology supported by nine AMS 14 C dates in the hope that the previous reconstructions can be improved. Our data exhibited three timescales of variation in the water salinity of the lake. First, the upward-increasing parallel trends of major salinity proxies suggest that the salinity has been gradually increasing in the past ~8000 years. This constant increase in the salinity is most likely to have resulted from the shrinking of glacial cover in the central Tianshan Mountains where the inflowing river (i.e. Kaidu River) originated. Second, the C/S ratio and carbonate-based salinity proxies suggest that the lake was formed around ~8060 cal. yr BP and reached its maximum depth around ~7250 cal yr BP. The lake level then declined to the mid- and late-Holocene average level around ~6370 cal. yr BP and has varied drastically around a relatively constant mean during the past ~6370 years. Third, the past ~8060 yr history of the Bosten Lake can be divided into five salinity stages. That is, three high salinity intervals are separated by two low salinity intervals. The two low salinity stages occurred between ~6370 and ~5170 cal. yr BP and between ~3000 and ~2170 cal. yr BP. Each one of the three high salinity stages can be further divided into less saline and more saline substages. Specifically, less saline time intervals are: substage 2-1 (~8060—~7250 cal. yr BP), substage 4-2 (~4370—~3830 cal. yr BP) and substage 6-2 (~1250—~0 cal. yr BP). Also, saltier time intervals are: substage 2-2 (~7250—~6370 cal. yr BP), substage 4-1 (~5170—~4370 cal. yr BP), substage 4-3 (~3830—~3000 cal. yr BP) and substage 6-1 (~2170—~1250 cal. yr BP). It should be stressed that the phase relationships between the carbonate-based salinity proxy and diatom-based temperature proxy suggest that the salinity was mainly controlled by temperature. Finally, the comparison between the Bosten Lake salinity record and the high northern latitudinal climate pattern suggests that the lower salinity and cooler periods in Bosten Lake area correspond with abrupt climatic events (i.e. cooling events) in the high northern latitudes.

    Abstract: This study was performed to assess the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) in patients with symptomatic congestive heart failure (CHF) and compare the clinical features with those of patients without NAFL. Methods In total, 102 patients with CHF were divided into NAFL and non-NAFL groups according to their hepatic ultrasonography findings. All patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance examination. Follow-up was performed for major cardiovascular events (MACE) and readmission due to heart failure at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the index hospitalization. Results NAFL was detected in 37 of 102 patients (36.27%). Compared with the non-NAFL group, patients with NAFL were younger, had a higher body mass index and left ventricular (LV) mass index, and had more severe fibrosis. MACE and readmission occurred in 15 patients in the NAFL group and 29 patients in the non-NAFL group, without a significant difference. Linear regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for confounders, NAFL was independently associated with the LV fibrosis size and the ratio of the LV fibrosis size to the LV mass index. Conclusions NAFL is present in more than one-third of patients with CHF and is associated with the severity of LV fibrosis.
