    Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the independent risk factors associated with peripheral venous catheter (PVC) failure and develop a model that can predict PVC failure. Methods: This prospective, multicenter cohort study was carried out in nine tertiary hospitals in Suzhou, China between December 2017 and February 2018. Adult patients undergoing first-time insertion of a PVC were observed from catheter insertion to removal. Logistic regression was used to identify the independent risk factors predicting PVC failure. Results: This study included 5345 patients. The PVC failure rate was 54.05% ( n = 2889/5345), and the most common causes of PVC failure were phlebitis (16.3%) and infiltration/extravasation (13.8%). On multivariate analysis, age (45–59 years: OR, 1.295; 95% CI, 1.074–1.561; 60–74 years: OR, 1.375; 95% CI, 1.143–1.654; ⩾75 years: OR, 1.676; 95% CI, 1.355–2.073); department (surgery OR, 1.229; 95% CI, 1.062–1.423; emergency internal/surgical ward OR, 1.451; 95% CI, 1.082–1.945); history of venous puncture in the last week (OR, 1.298, 95% CI 1.130–1.491); insertion site, number of puncture attempts, irritant fluid infusion, daily infusion time, daily infusion volume, and type of sealing liquid were independent predictors of PVC failure. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that a logistic regression model constructed using these variables had moderate accuracy for the prediction of PVC failure (area under the curve, 0.781). The Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test demonstrated that the model was correctly specified (χ 2  = 2.514, p = 0.961). Conclusion: This study should raise awareness among healthcare providers of the risk factors for PVC failure. We recommend that healthcare providers use vascular access device selection tools to select a clinically appropriate device and for the timely detection of complications, and have a list of drugs classified as irritants or vesicants so they can monitor patients receiving fluid infusions containing these drugs more frequently.

    Abstract: This study aimed to develop a Chinese Mental Resilience Scale. A total of 2500 healthy participants, in two representative samples of the Chinese population, were administered the scale. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and correlation analysis were used to obtain the relevant coefficients and verify the reliability and validity of the scale. Five factors were extracted: willpower, family support, optimism and self-confidence, problem solving, and interpersonal interaction, plus a lying subscale, which together accounted for 54 percent of the total variance. The Chinese Mental Resilience Scale demonstrated good psychometric properties. It can be used to evaluate the mental resilience level of general Chinese population.

    Abstract: Asthma is characterized by airway inflammation and airway remodeling. Our previous study revealed that grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) could inhibit asthmatic airway inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness by down-regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase in a murine model of acute asthma. The present study aimed to evaluate GSPE's effects on airway inflammation and airway remodeling in a chronic asthmatic model. BALB/c mice were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) and then were challenged three times a week for 8 weeks. Airway responsiveness was measured at 24 h after the last OVA challenge. HE staining, PAS staining, and Masson staining were used to observe any airway inflammation in the lung tissue, airway mucus secretion, and subepithelial fibrosis, respectively. The cytokines levels in the lavage fluid (BALF) in addition to the total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were detected by ELISA. Furthermore, lung collagen contents, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) expression in the airway were assessed by hydroxyproline assay, immunohistochemistry, andWestern blot analysis, respectively. GSPE administration significantly suppressed airway resistance as well as reduced the amount of inflammatory cells, especially the eosinophil count, in BALF. Additionally, the GSPE treatment markedly decreased interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in BALF in addition to the total serum IgE levels. A histological examination demonstrated that GSPE significantly ameliorated allergen-induced lung eosinophilic inflammation and decreased PAS-positive epithelial cells in the airway. The elevated hydroxyproline contents, lung α-SMA contents, and TGF-β1 protein expression that were observed in the OVA mice were also inhibited by GSPE. In conclusion, GSPE could inhibit airway inflammation and airway remodeling in a murine model of chronic asthma, thus providing a potential treatment for asthma.

    Abstract: Severe lumbosacral pain, paraparesis or paraplegia, and urinary incontinence are common but frustrating problems in dogs with lumbosacral spinal cord injury (SCI). The surgical interventions including stabilization and decompression may not restore satisfying neurological functions in severe SCI. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Ad-MSCs) show benefits in immunomodulation, anti-inflammation, and promotion of axonal growth and remyelination, and also display efficacy in several diseases in veterinary medicine. In this report, four dogs presented with fracture of sacrum vertebrae or fracture of seventh lumbar and lumbosacral displacement after road traffic accidents. The clinical signs include lumbosacral pain (4/4), paraparesis (3/4), paraplegia (1/4), and urinary incontinence (4/4). All dogs were treated by surgical decompression with or without stabilization 1 to 7 weeks after trauma. Allogeneic canine Ad-MSCs (cAd-MSCs) were injected locally on nerve roots through the surgical region in all dogs. One dose of intravenous transplantation and 4 doses of local transplantation were also performed within 8 weeks after the surgery separately. All dogs showed significant neurological improvements with normal ambulatory ability (4/4) and urinary control (3/4) 3 months after the surgery and the first cAd-MSCs transplantation. No side effect was related to multiple cAd-MSCs transplantations during 6 months monitoring in all dogs. In conclusion, multiple cAd-MSCs transplantations could be a recommended treatment combined with surgery in dogs with lumbosacral SCI.

    Abstract: The trajectory tracking control problem of dynamic nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots is considered via visual servoing feedback. A novel visual feedback tracking error model is proposed. Its tracking controller is independent of uncalibrated visual parameters by using new methods. This controller consists of two units: one is an adaptive control for compensation of the uncertainties of dynamic parameters, the other is a variable structure control for the interference suppression. In addition, the torque tracking controller is global and smooth, and the chattering phenomenon is eliminated. The asymptotic convergence of tracking errors to equilibrium point is rigorously proved by the Lyapunov method. Simulation and experiment results are provided to illustrate the performance of the control law.

    Abstract: The organic extract of Periplaneta americana L. (Dictyoptera; Blattidae) has been traditionally used in southwestern China as an alternative medicine against disorders such as hepatitis, trauma, gastric ulcers, burns, and heart disease. The present study describes bioassay-guided purification and chemotherapeutic evaluation of the 60% ethanolic fraction of P americana organic extracts (PAE60). The most effective cytotoxic fraction was determined by way of repeated in vitro screenings against 12 distinct cultured human carcinoma cell lines: Eca 109, BGC823, HO8910, LS174T, CNE, HeLa, K562, PC-3, A549, BEL 7404, HL-60, and KB, followed by in vivo antitumor assays of the lead fraction (PAE60). The complexity of enriched active fraction was qualitatively evaluated using thin layer chromatography. Reconstituted PAE60 was effective at inhibiting HL-60, KB, CNE, and BGC823 cell growth with IC 50 values 〈 20 µg mL− 1 . PAE60 reduced tumor growth in S180-bearing immunocompetent mice by 72.62% after 10 days following oral doses of 500 mg kg d− 1 compared with 78.75% inhibition following 40 mg kg d− 1 of cyclophosphamide (CTX). Thymus and spleen indices of S180-bearing mice treated with PAE60 were significantly greater ( P 〈 .05) than CTX treatment groups, suggesting potential immunomodulation of antitumor host defenses by PAE60. Antiviral activity was also investigated and PAE60 inhibited herpes simplex type-2 replication (IC 50 = 4.11 ± 0.64 µg mL− 1 ) with a selectivity index (CC 50 to IC 50 ratio) of 64.84 in Vero cells but was less effective on type-1 virus (IC 50 of 25.6 ± 3.16 µg mL− 1 ). These results support future clinical trials on P. americana as an alternative or complementary medicinal agent.

    Abstract: Titanium implants possessing excellent antibacterial activity are highly desirable for the prevention of implant-associated infections. In this study, we demonstrate a simple one-step, water-based procedure for the fabrication of biofunctionalized nanocomposites on titanium for implant application. The formation of biofunctionalized silver nanoparticles with varied biomolecule templates is confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic, contact angle, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry analysis. Antibacterial properties of the specimens were determined by challenging them against Staphylococcus aureus. The Ag-incorporated titanium shows excellent antibacterial ability against planktonic bacteria in the suspension and ability to prevent bacterial adhesion. The specimens with optimized biomolecule/silver ratio promote osteoblast differentiation. These biofunctionalized silver nanoparticles-doped titanium specimens, with improved antibacterial activity while maintaining healthy osteoblast cellular activity, have promising application in orthopedics, dentistry, and other biomedical devices.

    Abstract: Background. Hepatocellular carcinoma, among the most common malignant digestive system tumorsworldwide, is most effectively treated with precise surgical resection. Near-infrared fluorescence imaging technology is being increasingly used clinically and has achieved great initial results in the navigation of liver cancer surgery. Methods. This review describes the application of indocyanine green fluorescence (ICG) imaging technology with near-infrared window I in the navigation of liver cancer surgery, explores novel fluorescent probes and near-infrared window II fluorescence imaging technology, and discusses the development status of the 2 emerging tools. Results. ICG fluorescence imaging technology can precisely localize the tumor, reveal the boundary of liver cancer or liver segment, and identify the bile leakage. The novel fluorescent probe is more targeted than ICG, which makes the detection of cancer more accurate. Near-infrared window II fluorescence imaging technology can lead to outstanding gains in deeper detection, higher resolution, and fidelity. But, due to the shortcomings of machine and probe, it is not widely used in clinical. Conclusion. Near-infrared fluorescence imaging has great development potential. With the advent of precision medicine and the progress of various biotechnology studies, fluorescence imaging technology will be better developed and applied in the diagnosis, surgical navigation, and treatment of liver cancer.

    Abstract: The emerging data supports rhythm control to prevent major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Limited data demonstrated rivaroxaban 10 mg combining dronedarone seemed feasible. This study aimed at investigating clinical events in a dronedarone-treated cohort. This exploratory, retrospective chart review was conducted in nonpermanent AF patients receiving dronedarone for ≥ 3 months between 2009/1 and 2016/2. In Taiwan, dronedarone's labeled indication was strict to age ≥ 70 or 65 to 70 years with either hypertension, diabetes, prior stroke, or left atrium 〉 50 mm. We divided all into 4 groups using antithrombotic strategies to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and MACE endpoints. A total of 689 patients (mean CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score 3.8 ± 1.4) were analyzed: rivaroxaban 10 mg (n = 93, 13.5%), warfarin (n = 89, 12.9%), antiplatelet (n = 331, 48.0%), and none (n = 176, 25.5%). During the follow-up period (mean 946 ± 493.8 days), the rivaroxaban group did not report any stroke or thromboembolism (ishcmeic stroke rate: antiplatelet [0.6%], none [1.1%] ; hemorrahgic stroke rate: warfarin [2.2%]; thromboembolism rate: warfarin [2.2%] ). There was no significant difference in safety, effectiveness, and MACE endpoints between groups. Also, 〉 104 weeks of dronedarone use was the independent predictor for MACE after adjusting the strategy and other covariates (hazard ratio 0.14 [95% confidence interval 0.04-0.44], P = .001). Our findings warrant concomitant rivaroxaban 10 mg and dronedarone for further investigation. Regardless of antithrombotic strategies, a more extended persistence of dronedarone was associated with fewer MACE.

    Abstract: Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with additional nodule(s) located in the same lobe or ipsilateral different lobe were designated as T3 and T4, respectively, which was merely defined by anatomical location of additional nodule(s), regardless of other prognostic factors. Methods: A total of 4711 patients with T1-4, N0-2, M0 NSCLC undergoing complete resection were identified between 2009 and 2014, including 145 patients with additional nodule(s) in the same lobe (T3-Add) and 174 patients with additional tumor nodule(s) in ipsilateral different lobe (T4-Add). Overall survival (OS) was compared using multivariable Cox regression models and propensity score matching analysis (PSM). Results: T3-Add patients [T3-Add versus T3, hazard ratio (HR), 0.695; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.528–0.915; p = 0.009] and comparable OS with T2b patients through multivariable Cox analysis, and further validated by PSM. T4-Add patients carried a wide spectrum of prognosis, and the largest diameter of single tumor was screened out as the most effective indicator for distinguishing prognosis. T4-Add (⩽3 cm) patients had better OS than T4 patients [T4-Add (⩽3 cm) versus T4, HR, 0.629; 95% CI, 0.455–0.869; p = 0.005] and comparable OS with T3 patients. And T4-Add ( 〉 3 cm) patients had comparable OS with T4 patients. Conclusion: NSCLC patients with additional nodule(s) in the same lobe and ipsilateral different lobe (maximum tumor diameter ⩽ 3 cm) should be further validated and considered restaging as T2b and T3 in the forthcoming 9th tumor, node, and metastasis staging system.
