Abstract: Conventional instrumentation has difficulty to measure displacements inside laboratory-scale physical models. In this paper, an innovative fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing bar has been developed to perform high-accuracy and real-time monitoring of internal displacements. According to Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the strain distribution measured by the quasi-distributed FBG sensors adhered on the bar surface can be used to compute the displacement profile along the sensing bar. The effectiveness of the FBG sensing bar has been verified by calibration tests. In the physical model of the Wudu gravity dam, two FBG sensing bars developed by the authors were installed, together with linear variable displacement transformers (LVDTs) and strain rosettes. The FBG sensing bars successfully captured the variation of internal displacement profiles in the model dam. The monitoring results during the overloading test were presented, based on which the deformation mechanism of the dam-foundation system is explained in details. The displacements measured by the FBG sensing bars are validated by their good agreements with those from LVDTs.

Abstract: Considering the stability of vehicle system, static instability and dynamic instability are two different instability problems. Because of the dynamic coupling between car and trailer, the problem of dynamic stability of car-trailer combination (CTC) is more obvious. This instability is called body sway or flutter in engineering, its boundary is often described by dynamic critical speed ( v crit ). It has been proved by experiments that the steering system characteristics have an important impact on the dynamic stability of CTC, but the specific mechanism is not clear. In this paper, the characteristic and influence of steering subsystem are studied for the first time. Firstly, a 6-DOF nonlinear dynamic model of CTC is established by Lagrange equation. The steering subsystem characteristics, incl. stiffness, damping, rotational inertia, and dry friction, are considered in theoretical modeling. On this basis, the influences of steering characteristics, especially the dry friction, on v crit and axle cornering stiffness of CTC are analyzed. Simulation results show that the v crit can increase by 16% and 23.2% respectively via adjusting the steering stiffness and the sliding friction factor. Therefore, a fine selection of steering subsystem characteristics can effectively improve the dynamic stability and safety of CTC. The research results of this paper can provide reference for the design of steering system considering dynamic stability.

Abstract: The influence of braking on dynamic stability of a car-trailer combination (CTC) is studied in this paper. The braking is simply modeled and integrated into a single-track model (STM) with a single-axle trailer. On this basis, some fundamentals and analysis results related to system dynamic stability are given through simulation. Furthermore, it is found that the axle load transfer and braking force distribution have a great influence on system dynamic stability. In order to further analyze the influence of these two factors, both of the braking force distribution and the pitch motion are considered in the modeling. Finally, the ideal braking force distribution domain is proposed. Results can be adopted to explain the experimental phenomenon and serve as a guideline for the differential braking strategy in stability control of the CTC.

Abstract: Objective. To observe the effects of Qingyihuaji formula (QYHJ) on the progression of liver metastases from human pancreatic cancer and to detect the expression changes of some biological factors associated with angiogenesis and metastasis during the development of advanced pancreatic cancer. Methods. Nude mice were inoculated intrasplenically with human pancreatic cancer cell line SW1990 and then randomly assigned into 4 groups: a control group and groups QYHJ-A, QYHJ-B, and QYHJ-C. Following this, the mice were treated with or without QYHJ formula for 4 weeks and were sacrificed at the end of the sixth week. The changes in body weight were observed, followed by the livers being excised and weighed. Then, both the numbers and the volume of metastatic nodules per liver were evaluated. Subsequently, the expressions of MMPs, VEGF, and Cyr61 in the tissue of liver metastases were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, or Western blot. Finally, the correlation was evaluated between the expressions of the factors associated with metastasis and the growth of liver metastasis. Results. Liver metastases were identified in 11 of 15 mice (73%) in the control group, 9 of 15 mice (60%) in group QYHJ-A, 6 of 14 mice (43%) in group QYHJ-B, and 8 of 14 mice (57%) in group QYHJ-C both the number and the volume of metastatic nodules per liver same as the ratio of liver-body weight in QYHJ groups were significantly less than the controlled group ( P 〈 0.05). The expressions of Cyr61, MMP-2, and VEGF at the levels of mRNA and protein were decreased in the QYHJ groups when compared with the control, as confirmed by immunohistochemistry detection ( P 〈 .05). However, no significant difference was observed in the mRNA expression of MMP-1 and MMP-9 between the QYHJ groups and the control group ( P 〉 .05). Regression analysis indicated that QYHJ possessed an evident inhibition against the progression of liver metastasis by downregulating the expression of VEGF and Cyr61 rather than MMP-2. Conclusions. The QYHJ formula exerted an inhibitory effect on the growth of liver metastasis from pancreatic cancer, perhaps by targeting VEGF and Cyr61 to some extent.

Abstract: A preliminary study on the influences of the nylon-1010 powder, as a new candidate for fillers, on the cellular structure and mechanical properties of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) is presented. By observation of the scanning electron micrographs, it was found that the cells of the nylon powder-filled RPUF were mainly spheroid. When the nylon content was 5 wt%, the nylon particles were dispersed rather uniformly, whereas when the nylon content exceeded 10 wt%, the particles were hard to disperse in the matrix, and formed agglomerates. The compressive and tensile strengths of the unfilled RPUF exhibited a power-law dependence with respect to density of the foam: * 1 /4 ( * ) n. The measured tensile modulus of the unfilled RPUF was described well by a simple geometric model. The compressive modulus was also found to follow a power-law behavior with respect to foam density. Addition of 5 wt% nylon powder increased the tensile modulus and strength, but without a change in the density dependence. It can be found that the tensile modulus of the foam with 5 and 10 wt% nylon powder fit the predicted model well, but, at the filler concentration of 15 and 20 wt%, the power-law behavior did not work.

Abstract: Optical fiber sensor has gained popularity for structural monitoring in recent decades. Studies on the monitoring for geotechnical structures with fully-distributed fiber sensors, however, are quite limited. In this study, the fully-distributed Lower Coherence Interferometry (LCI) sensors and quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are applied for measuring the strain distribution of a soil nail as a slender structure during pullout test. First, this paper introduces an innovative calibration method for the LCI system. Second, the paper describes the procedures of fiber instrumentation on soil nail. Third, the measured results by LCI technology and FBG technology are compared to study the strain distribution and friction resistance of soil nail during pullout test. Comparative study from test results indicates the characteristics of strain distribution and resistance contribution for different parts of soil nail. Through this study, the advantages and limitations of two sensing technologies are examined.

Abstract: The responses of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) or corticosteroids as the initial treatment on pregnancy with ITP were unsatisfactory. This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of prednisone plus IVIg versus prednisone or IVIg in pregnant patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Methods: Between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2020, 970 pregnancies diagnosed with ITP at 19 collaborative centers in China were reviewed in this observational study. A total of 513 pregnancies (52.89%) received no intervention. Concerning the remaining pregnancies, 151 (33.04%) pregnancies received an initial treatment of prednisone plus IVIg, 105 (22.98%) pregnancies received IVIg alone, and 172 (37.64%) pregnancies only received prednisone. Results: Regarding the maternal response to the initial treatment, no differences were found among the three treatment groups (41.1% for prednisone plus IVIg, 33.1% for prednisone, and 38.1% for IVIg). However, a significant difference was observed in the time to response between the prednisone plus IVIg group (4.39 ± 2.54 days) and prednisone group (7.29 ± 5.01 days; p   〈  0.001), and between the IVIg group (6.71 ± 4.85 days) and prednisone group ( p  〈  0.001). The median prednisone duration in the monotherapy group was 27 days (range, 8–195 days), whereas that in the combination group was 14 days (range, 6–85 days). No significant differences were found among these three treatment groups in neonatal outcomes, particularly concerning the neonatal platelet counts. The time to response in the combination treatment group was shorter than prednisone monotherapy. The duration of prednisone application in combination group was shorter than prednisone monotherapy. The combined therapy showed a lower predelivery platelet transfusion rate than IVIg alone. Conclusion: These findings suggest that prednisone plus IVIg may represent a potential combination therapy for pregnant patients with ITP.

Abstract: In order to ensure the stability and high accuracy on price forecasting, a novel idea is found that magnitude differences in the original data have an effect on price forecasting based on experiments. And a general data pre-processing method for the original data magnitude is put forward in this paper according to the novel idea. The new data pre-processing method that normalizes the magnitude of the original data is described in detail in this paper. The different data and models are used to verify the new idea and the generality of the proposed method. And the discrete data are the data of CNY exchange rate and agricultural product price. The different models are improved models of Back Propagation (BP) neural network and Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network. Compared to other magnitudes, normalizing the magnitude of the original data to a smaller magnitude obtains the best result. And in this paper the smaller magnitude is the order 1. The forecasting average accuracy of the experiments done with the data of CNY exchange rate based on BP neural network and RBF neural network gets 99.14 percent and 99.27 percent. The forecasting average accuracy of the experiments completed with the data of agriculture product price based on BP neural network and RBF neural network gets 98.54 percent and 97.81 percent. Experiment demonstrates that the data pre-processing method has the great generality on discrete data and models. The data pre-processing method proposed in this paper reduces the differences between data which affect the accuracy of the prediction models to a degree. The generality of the proposed method is proved that the innovative idea and method are meaningful and useful for the price forecasting.
