    Abstract: Identifying and locating endometriotic lesions is crucial for preoperative planning, so new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques are urgently needed to improve the diagnostic sensitivity for pelvic endometriosis. Purpose To evaluate the feasibility of R2* multiple fast gradient recalled echo (MFGRE) imaging in the diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis. Material and Methods A total of 46 patients with suspected endometriosis underwent routine pelvic MRI and R2*MFGRE imaging. Clinical diagnosis was pathologically confirmed one month after MRI examination. Three radiologists who were blinded to the pathological results evaluated the number of ovarian endometriomas (OMAs) and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) lesions using routine MRI and its combination with R2*MFGRE. The diagnostic sensitivity for OMA or DIE using the two examination methods was determined. Two-correlation sample rank-sum tests were used to compare both methods. Additionally, for all lesions, the R2* values were measured and statistically analyzed. Results Among 46 patients, 47 OMAs and 30 DIE lesions were found surgically and pathologically confirmed. The diagnostic sensitivity of the routine MRI was 87.2% for OMA and 46.7% for DIE. The diagnostic sensitivity of the routine imaging combined with R2*MFGRE was 100% for OMA and 90% for DIE. The two-correlation sample rank-sum test showed a significant difference between both methods (P 〈 0.01, z = −4.26). The median R2* value was 25.20 (IQR=14) for the OMA group, and 45.21 (IQR=40) for the DIE group. The difference between both groups was statistically significant ( P 〈 0.01, z = −4.89). Conclusion R2*MFGRE imaging, as a supplement to the routine MRI, could improve the diagnostic sensitivity for pelvic endometriosis, especially for DIE.

    Abstract: To observe the efficacy and safety of telitacicept in refractory childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE). Methods A self-controlled before–after trial. Children with active SLE, aged 5–18 years, who cannot tolerate side effects of glucocorticoid, were enrolled in our study. Patients received subcutaneous injection of telitacicept weekly based on the standard treatment. SLE responder index-4 (SRI-4) was assessed before the first administration and at least 4 weeks after the first administration. Results Among the 15 cases of refractory cSLE, three were males (20%) and 12 were females (80%). The median age and weight were 13 years old and 52 kg, respectively. The median duration of disease was 30 months. 5–26 weeks (80 or 160 mg per week) after administration of telitacicept, 66.7% ( n=10) reached SRI-4 response. 12 cases reduced their glucocorticoid intake from 40 mg/d to 17.5 mg/d. The urinary protein after treatment declined in 8 cases whose 24-h proteinuria was 〉 0.5 g at baseline. The urinary protein in two of the eight cases turned negative and plasma albumin in five of the eight cases rose to normal. In addition, three of these eight cases demonstrated varying degrees of improvement in renal impairment, whose estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, ml/min·1.73 m 2 ) rose from 17.4 to 26.6, 40.7 to 48.2, and 63.2 to 146.0, respectively. There were mild to moderate adverse events after treatment. Conclusion Telitacicept combined with the standard treatment may significantly increase the SRI-4 response rate and reduce the glucocorticoid dosage in refractory cSLE, and also shown efficacy on lupus nephritis. The related adverse drug events were controllable.

    Abstract: Soluble starch synthases (SSs) are major enzymes involved in starch biosynthesis in plants. Cassava starch has many remarkable characteristics, which should be influenced by the evolution of SS genes in this starchy root crop. In this work, we performed a comprehensive phylogenetic and evolutionary analysis of the soluble starch synthases in cassava. Genome-wide identification showed that there are 9 genes encoding soluble starch synthases in cassava. All of the soluble starch synthases encoded by these genes contain both Glyco_transf_5 and Glycos_transf_1 domains, and a correlation analysis showed evidence of coevolution between these 2 domains in cassava SS genes. The SS genes in land plants can be divided into 6 subfamilies that were formed before the origin of seed plants, and species-specific expansion has contributed to the evolution of this family in cassava. A functional divergence analysis for this family provided statistical evidence for shifted evolutionary rates between the subfamilies of land plant soluble starch synthases. Although the main selective pressure acting on land plant SS genes was purifying selection, our results also revealed that point mutation with positive selection contributed to the evolution of 2 SS genes in cassava. The remarkable cassava starch characteristics might be the result of both the duplication and adaptive selection of SS genes.

    Abstract: Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with additional nodule(s) located in the same lobe or ipsilateral different lobe were designated as T3 and T4, respectively, which was merely defined by anatomical location of additional nodule(s), regardless of other prognostic factors. Methods: A total of 4711 patients with T1-4, N0-2, M0 NSCLC undergoing complete resection were identified between 2009 and 2014, including 145 patients with additional nodule(s) in the same lobe (T3-Add) and 174 patients with additional tumor nodule(s) in ipsilateral different lobe (T4-Add). Overall survival (OS) was compared using multivariable Cox regression models and propensity score matching analysis (PSM). Results: T3-Add patients [T3-Add versus T3, hazard ratio (HR), 0.695; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.528–0.915; p = 0.009] and comparable OS with T2b patients through multivariable Cox analysis, and further validated by PSM. T4-Add patients carried a wide spectrum of prognosis, and the largest diameter of single tumor was screened out as the most effective indicator for distinguishing prognosis. T4-Add (⩽3 cm) patients had better OS than T4 patients [T4-Add (⩽3 cm) versus T4, HR, 0.629; 95% CI, 0.455–0.869; p = 0.005] and comparable OS with T3 patients. And T4-Add ( 〉 3 cm) patients had comparable OS with T4 patients. Conclusion: NSCLC patients with additional nodule(s) in the same lobe and ipsilateral different lobe (maximum tumor diameter ⩽ 3 cm) should be further validated and considered restaging as T2b and T3 in the forthcoming 9th tumor, node, and metastasis staging system.

    Abstract: Objectives: In this study, we propose a deep learning-based approach to predict Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) quality assurance (QA) gamma passing rates using delivery fluence informed by log files. Methods: A total of 112 IMRT plans for chest cancers were planned and measured by portal dosimetry equipped on TrueBeam linac. The convolutional neural network (CNN) based learning model was trained using delivery fluence as inputs and gamma passing rates (GPRs) of 4 different criteria (3%/3 mm, 2%/3 mm, 3%/2 mm, and 2%/2 mm) as outputs. Model performance for both validation and test sets was assessed using mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (MSE), root MSE (RMSE), Spearman rank correlation coefficients (Sr), and Determination coefficient ( R 2 ) between the measured and predicted GPR values. Results: In the test set, the MAE of the prediction model were 0.402, 0.511, 1.724, and 2.530, the MSE were 0.640, 0.986, 6.654, and 9.508, the RMSE were 0.800, 0.993, 2.580, and 3.083, the Sr were 0.643, 0.684, 0.821, and 0.824 ( P  〈  .001) and the R 2 were 0.4110, 0.4666, 0.6677, and 0.6769 for 3%/3 mm, 3%/2 mm, 2%/3 mm, and 2%/2 mm, respectively. The MAE and RMSE of the prediction model decreased with stricter gamma criteria while the Sr and R 2 between measured and predicted GPR values increased. Conclusions: The CNN prediction model based on delivery fluence informed by log files could accurately predict IMRT QA passing rates for different gamma criteria. It could reduce QA workload and improve efficiency in pretreatment QA. Our results suggest that the CNN prediction model based on delivery fluence informed by log files may be a promising tool for the gamma evaluation of IMRT QA.

    Abstract: Polyimide is a class of resins with high heat resistance, and their composites have a wide range of applications in military and civilian. However, the application of polyimides as an ablation and thermal insulation material has always been a challenge due to their low char yield during ablation in the air. Herein, we described the first application of polyimide composites—albite/glass powder doped polyimide hybrid materials - as an ablation and thermal insulation material. The key to the success of this case is that the process of the ceramization of albite/glass powder can greatly reduce the carbon loss of polyimide during the ablation process in the air. Moreover, the mechanical properties, thermal stability, ablation and thermal insulation properties of these polyimide hybrid materials have been studied systematically. This work not only opens up a new application for polyimide, but also provides a new idea for the design of novel ablation and thermal insulation material.

    Abstract: Lightweight optical mirrors usually play key roles in aerospace and optical structural systems applied to space telescopes, radars, solar collectors, communication antennas, etc. Due to their high flexibility and low damping properties, external excitations such as orbital maneuver may induce unexpected oscillations and thus reduce their working performance. Active vibration control is therefore essential for the lightweight optical mirror systems. In this spirit, a lightweight mirror structronic system with a linear quadratic optimal controller is presented. The mirror is modeled as a membrane plate with pretension and distributed polyvinylidene fluoride sensors and actuators. The sensing sensitivity of the piezoelectric (PVDF) sensors and the modal actuation factor of the PVDF actuators are derived. The state-space equations are established and the feedback control gains between sensing and control signals are obtained. Sensor and actuator of different shape, size, and position are employed to actively control the first four natural modes of the mirror. The influences of mode order, pretension, and the two weighting factors Q and R on the control performance are also investigated. Analytical results in this paper could guide the design and layout of the PZT sensor and actuator on lightweight membrane plate mirrors.

    Abstract: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established therapeutic method, first approved by the FDA for certain kinds of cancer in 1998. There are also increasing data to show that a related procedure, sonodynamic therapy (SDT), is a promising new modality for cancer treatment. Here, the authors report clinical results in 3 advanced refractory breast cancer patients who were treated using a combination of sonodynamic and photodynamic therapy (SPDT), along with conventional therapies. All 3 patients had pathologically proven metastatic breast carcinoma. These widely disseminated carcinomas had ultimately failed to respond to conventional therapy. A new sensitizing agent, Sonoflora 1™ (SF1) was administered sublingually; then, after a 24-hour delay, patients were treated with a combination of light and ultrasound. All patients had significant partial or complete responses. SPDT is a promising new therapeutic combination for the treatment of breast cancer.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study was to replicate previous behavioral performance results and investigate eye met- rics correlates in the Gradual Onset Continuous Performance Task (gradCPT). Previous research has shown that gradCPT can provide a measurement of fluctuations in sustained attention over time. In this study, 30 participants each completed three eight-minute sessions of gradCPT. “In the zone” and “out of the zone” periods were identified according to the Variance Time Course measure. Patterns of reaction time, d’, and error rates were consistent with previous studies, while criterion scores differed between the two-zone peri- ods. Eye-tracking data indicated that mean and variation of pupil size, saccade duration, saccade peak veloc- ity, and fixation duration were sensitive to the in-the-zone vs. the out-of-the-zone periods. These results sug- gest that some individuals may change their task strategy during out-of-the-zone periods. Eye metrics might be useful indicators for out-of-the-zone performance when behavioral performance metrics were not availa- ble.

    Abstract: NK cells participate in the development of human multiple sclerosis (MS) and mouse experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), but the roles of different NK cell subsets in disease onset remain poorly understood. In this study, murine NK cells were divided into CD27 high and CD27 low/− subsets. The CD27 high subset was decreased and the CD27 low/− subset was increased in lymphoid organs during the pre-onset stage of EAE. Compared with the counterpart in naïve mice, the CD27 high subset showed lower expression of Ly49D, Ly49H and NKG2D, and less production of IFN-γ, whereas the CD27 low/− subset showed similar expression of the above mentioned surface receptors but higher cytotoxic activity in EAE mice. Compared with the CD27 high subset, the CD27 low/− subset exhibited increased promotion of DC maturation and no significant inhibition of T cells proliferation and Th17 cells differentiation in vitro. Additionally, adoptive transfer of the CD27 low/− subset, but not the CD27 high subset, exacerbated the severity of EAE. Collectively, our data suggest the CD27 NK cell subsets play different roles in controlling EAE onset, which provide a new understanding for the regulation of NK cell subsets in early autoimmune disease.
