Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly explosive blast-induced TBI (bTBI), has become the most prevalent injury among military personnel. The disruption of cognitive function is one of the most serious consequences of bTBI because its long-lasting effects prevent survivors fulfilling their active duty and resuming normal civilian life. However, the mechanisms are poorly understood and there is no treatment available. This study investigated the effects of adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) on bTBI-induced cognitive deficit, and explored the underlying mechanisms. After being subjected to moderate whole-body blast injury, mice lacking the A2AR (A2AR knockout (KO)) showed less severity and shorter duration of impaired spatial reference memory and working memory than wild-type mice did. In addition, bTBI-induced cortical and hippocampal lesions, as well as proinflammatory cytokine expression, glutamate release, edema, cell loss, and gliosis in both early and prolonged phases of the injury, were significantly attenuated in A2AR KO mice. The results suggest that early injury and chronic neuropathological damages are important mechanisms of bTBI-induced cognitive impairment, and that the impairment can be attenuated by preventing A2AR activation. These findings suggest that A2AR antagonism is a potential therapeutic strategy for mild-to-moderate bTBI and consequent cognitive impairment.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to validate a novel pictorial-based Longshi Scale for evaluating a patient’s disability by healthcare professionals and non-professionals. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Rehabilitation departments from a grade A, class 3 public hospital, a grade B, class 2 public hospital, and a private hospital and seven community rehabilitation centers. Subjects: A total of 618 patients and 251 patients with functional disabilities were recruited in a two-phase study, respectively. Main measures: Outcome measure: pictorial scale of activities of daily living (ADLs, Longshi Scale). Reference measure: Barthel Index. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to analyze the validity of Longshi Scale against Barthel Index. Results: In phase 1 study, from March 2016 to August 2016, the results demonstrated that the Longshi Scale was both reliable and valid (intraclass correlation coefficient based on two-way random effect (ICC 2,1 ) = 0.877–0.974 for intra-rater reliability; ICC 2,1 = 0.928–0.979; κ = 0.679–1.000 for inter-rater reliability; intraclass correlation coefficient based on one-way random effect (ICC 1,1 ) = 0.921–0.984 for test–retest reliability and Spearman correlation coefficient = 0.836–0.899). In the second phase, in March 2018, results further demonstrated that the Longshi Scale had good inter-rater and intra-rater reliability among healthcare professionals and non-professionals including therapists, interns, and personal care aids (ICC 1,1 = 0.822–0.882 on Day 1; ICC 1,1 = 0.842–0.899 on Day 7 for inter-rater reliability). In addition, the Longshi Scale decreased assessment time significantly, compared with the Barthel Index assessment ( P 〈 0.01). Conclusion: The Longshi Scale could potentially provide an efficient way for healthcare professionals and non-professionals who may have minimal training to assess the ADLs of functionally disabled patients.

Abstract: The Brostrom-Gould procedure has been considered as a gold standard operative technique for chronic lateral ankle instability. Despite the popularity and excellent outcomes of the modified Brostrom procedure, some patients still experience recurrence of ankle instability. Few studies reported outcomes of revision reconstruction for patients with a failed modified Brostrom procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a percutaneous anatomic revision lateral ankle ligament reconstruction for patients with a failed modified Brostrom procedure. Methods From March 2017 to April 2020, 21 patients with persistent ankle instability after a modified Brostrom procedure underwent revision lateral ankle ligament reconstruction. The operation was performed through minimally invasive incisions. Functional assessment was performed using the Karlsson–Peterson ankle scoring system (KP) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The questionnaires of KP and VAS were completed before surgery and at the last follow-up. Patients’ subjective satisfaction level was graded as excellent, good, fair, and poor. Preoperative and postoperative anterior talar displacement and varus talus tilt angle in stress radiographs were recorded. Results The average age at the revision surgery time was 39.6years. The mean follow-up was 39.2months. The VAS score improved from 4.1 ± 1.5 preoperatively to 1.3 ± 1.3 at the final follow-up ( p 〈 .05). The KP score improved from 59.0 ± 20.2 preoperatively to 88.2 ± 9.6 at the last follow-up ( p 〈 .05). The mean varus talar tilt angle was 14.1 ± 3.9 mm preoperatively versus 4.9 ± 4.7 mm at the final follow-up ( p 〈 .05). The mean anterior talar displacement was 12.8 ± 2.2 mm versus 5.6 ± 3.7 mm at the last follow-up ( p 〈 .05). Conclusions The revision anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ligaments of the ankle is effective for patients with recurrent instability after a failed modified Broström procedure.

Abstract: With the development of the material engineering and textile industry, superhydrophobic textiles have been an important category of superhydrophobic materials and have increasingly attracted the attentions of researchers. In recent years, many potential applications of these products have been explored by researchers. However, industrial production of the superhydrophobic textiles is still challenging to textile scientists and engineers, especially with increased environmental and human safety regulations. In this article, recent progress in the research and development of superhydrophobic textiles is reviewed and the advantages and disadvantages of the preparation methods of superhydrophobic textiles are generalized. Potential applications of superhydrophobic textiles in industrial, medical, and civilian fields are summarized. The challenges faced in research on superhydrophobic textiles are analyzed, mainly including restrictions on the use of environmentally hazardous fluorocarbons and organic solvents, demand for durable functional stability, economic and technical limitations of textile wet processing industry. This article will provide some reference and inspiration for the design, optimization and application of superhydrophobic textiles.

Abstract: Lightweight design is urgently required in many fields, especially in aeronautics and astronautics, but conventional design methods cannot always meet the requirement. However, natural organisms have developed many types of structures with excellent properties, and they can provide many new design ideas. To improve the design of an aircraft reinforcing frame, structural characteristics of peltate venation and root architecture were investigated first, and several distribution rules were obtained. Then, relevant models for design of the frame were developed and analyzed in order to extract mechanical rules for their application in the design. Finally, based on these mechanical rules, lightweight design for the frame was accomplished. Comparison between the bionic and conventional frames shows that the total weight is reduced by about 6.0%, under the same requirement of stiffness and strength in both two load conditions.

Abstract: Complexes formulated as {[Ln(HPIDC)(μ 4 -C 2 O 4 ) 0.5 (H 2 O)]·2H 2 O} n [Ln=Sm or La; H 3 PIDC=2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid] have been synthesised under hydrothermal conditions. The complexes are both built up from T-shaped 3-connected HPIDC 2- and 4-connected metal nodes and contain bridging oxalate (C 2 O 4 2- ) ligands, which might have been formed by the reductive coupling of CO 2 molecules released from the HPIDC 2- ligands through C-C bond cleavage.

Abstract: Objective: To analyze and compare the effect of the combination of energy and density parameters of CO 2 dot matrix laser in the hyperplastic stage of pediatric burn. Materials and Methods: A total of 160 pediatric patients with hypertrophic scar after limb burn from 2017 to 2020 were randomly divided into four parameter groups (n = 40). The patients were treated with ablative fraction carbon dioxide laser, once every 10 weeks. During the interval of laser treatment, Compound Heparin Sodium and Allantoin Gel (Contractubex) was applied externally, tid, and elastic cover or elastic bandage is attached to the affected limb. Scoring based on the Vancouver Scar Scale is performed before each laser treatment, The score before the first treatment was the initial score, which was scored by two people separately, and the average score was calculated. Subsequently, the patients were treated four times and scored. The differences between each treatment and the first score of each parameter group were compared. Under the same energy and different treatment density, the scores after each treatment were compared. Under the same density and different energy, the scores after each treatment were compared. The bleeding and pigmentation of each parameter group were compared. Results: The increase of density can show the therapeutic effect earlier than the increase of energy, and 25mj energy and 10% density have better intervention effect. With the course of disease and the progress of treatment, the correlation between intervention effect and parameters tends to weaken. Comparing the number of cases with different scores between each treatment and the first time, the score in the 5% density group was lower than that in the 10% density group, but there was no significant difference between the 25mj and 17.5mj energy levels in the same density group. The intervention effect of the increase of density on scar was better than that of energy, and the increase of energy and density could aggravate the pain. Conclusion: In pediatric burn hypertrophic scars treated by CO 2 dot matrix laser in exfoliation mode, the intervention effect of increasing density is better than that of energy. When setting laser treatment parameters, we should give priority to increasing density and adjust energy according to the effect of treatment and the condition of pain, bleeding and color precipitation. In this study, the best combination of parameters is 17.5mj/10%.

Abstract: Purpose: To overcome the imaging artifacts and Hounsfield unit inaccuracy limitations of cone-beam computed tomography, a conditional generative adversarial network is proposed to synthesize high-quality computed tomography-like images from cone-beam computed tomography images. Methods: A total of 120 paired cone-beam computed tomography and computed tomography scans of patients with head and neck cancer who were treated during January 2019 and December 2020 retrospectively collected; the scans of 90 patients were assembled into training and validation datasets, and the scans of 30 patients were used in testing datasets. The proposed method integrates a U-Net backbone architecture with residual blocks into a conditional generative adversarial network framework to learn a mapping from cone-beam computed tomography images to pair planning computed tomography images. The mean absolute error, root-mean-square error, structural similarity index, and peak signal-to-noise ratio were used to assess the performance of this method compared with U-Net and CycleGAN. Results: The synthesized computed tomography images produced by the conditional generative adversarial network were visually similar to planning computed tomography images. The mean absolute error, root-mean-square error, structural similarity index, and peak signal-to-noise ratio calculated from test images generated by conditional generative adversarial network were all significantly different than CycleGAN and U-Net. The mean absolute error, root-mean-square error, structural similarity index, and peak signal-to-noise ratio values between the synthesized computed tomography and the reference computed tomography were 16.75 ± 11.07 Hounsfield unit, 58.15 ± 28.64 Hounsfield unit, 0.92 ± 0.04, and 30.58 ± 3.86 dB in conditional generative adversarial network, 20.66 ± 12.15 Hounsfield unit, 66.53 ± 29.73 Hounsfield unit, 0.90 ± 0.05, and 29.29 ± 3.49 dB in CycleGAN, and 16.82 ± 10.99 Hounsfield unit, 58.68 ± 28.34 Hounsfield unit, 0.92 ± 0.04, and 30.48 ± 3.83 dB in U-Net, respectively. Conclusions: The synthesized computed tomography generated from the cone-beam computed tomography-based conditional generative adversarial network method has accurate computed tomography numbers while keeping the same anatomical structure as cone-beam computed tomography. It can be used effectively for quantitative applications in radiotherapy.

Abstract: To investigate the effect of liraglutide on the browning of white fat and the suppression of obesity via regulating microRNA (miR)-27b in vivo and in vitro. Methods Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat (HF) diet and 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes were differentiated into mature white adipocytes. Rats and mature adipocytes were then treated with different doses of liraglutide. The mRNA and protein levels of browning-associated proteins, including uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), PR domain containing 16 (PRDM16), CCAAT enhancer binding protein β (CEBPβ), cell death-inducing DFFA-like effector A (CIDEA) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ-coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), were detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Results Liraglutide decreased body weight and reduced the levels of blood glucose, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in HF diet-fed rats. Liraglutide increased the levels of UCP1, PRDM16, CEBPβ, CIDEA and PGC-1α in vivo and vitro. The levels of miR-27b were upregulated in HF diet-fed rats, whereas liraglutide reduced the levels of miR-27b. In vitro, overexpression of miR-27b decreased the mRNA and protein levels of UCP1, PRDM16, CEBPβ, CIDEA and PGC-1α. Transfection with the miR-27b mimics attenuated the effect of liraglutide on the browning of white adipocytes. Conclusion Liraglutide induced browning of white adipose through regulation of miR-27b.

Abstract: The study aimed to develop an evidence-based expert consensus statement on diagnosis and treatment of cervical ossification posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). Method: Delphi method was used to perform such survey, and the panel members from Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS) 2020 were invited to answer the open-ended questions in rounds 1 and 2. Then the results were summarized and developed into a Likert-style questionnaire for voting in round 3, and the level of agreement was defined as 80%. In the whole process, we conducted a systematic literature search on evidence for each statement. Results: Cervical OPLL can cause various degrees of neurological symptoms, an it’s thought to be more common in Asia population. CT reconstruction is an important imaging examination to assist diagnosis and guide surgical choice. Segmental, continuous, mixed, and focal type is the most widely used classification system. The non-surgical treatment is recommended for patients with no or mild clinical symptoms, or irreversible neurological damage, or failed surgical decompression, or condition cannot tolerant surgery, or refusing surgery. As OPLL may continue to develop gradually, surgical treatment would be considered in their course inevitably. The surgical choice should depend on various conditions, such as involved levels, thickness, and type of OPLL, skill-experiences of surgeons, which are listed and discussed in the article. Conclusion: In this statement, we describe the clinical features, classifications, and diagnostic criteria of cervical OPLL, and review various surgical methods (such as their indications, complications), and provide a guideline on their choice strategy.
