    Abstract: Objective: There has been no large-scale survey of suicide-related behaviours including suicidal ideations, plans and attempts in China involving both rural and urban areas and using standardized assessment tools. The aim of the present study was to determine the lifetime prevalence of suicide-related behaviour and its relationship with sociodemographic factors and psychiatric disorders in the rural and urban regions of Beijing, China. Methods: A total of 5926 subjects were randomly selected in Beijing and interviewed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Basic sociodemographic and clinical data and data on suicide-related behaviour were also collected. Results: The overall lifetime prevalence estimates of suicidal ideation, plans and attempts were 2.3%, 1.4%, and 1.0%, respectively; the corresponding figures were 2.8%, 1.6%, and 1.3% in the rural sample, and 1.8%, 1.3%, and 0.9% in the urban sample. Age ( 〉 25years), female sex, unmarried status, lower education level, lower ( 〈 RMB500month −1 ) or higher ( 〉 RMB2000month −1 ) monthly income and presence of major medical disorders were significantly associated with increased risk of suicide-related behaviour. 36.2% of subjects with suicide-related behavior consulted a medical practitioner and 20.7% consulted a psychiatrist. Conclusions: The prevalence of lifetime suicide-related behaviour in Beijing is lower than in Western countries, but the low percentage of subjects treated for suicide-related behaviour indicates a major public health problem that should be addressed. National surveys are needed to further explore the prevalence of suicide-related behaviour in China.

    Abstract: To identify atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the breast by shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), and to explore the molecular fingerprinting characteristics of breast AH. Methods Breast hyperplasia was studied in 11 hospitals across China from January 2015 to December 2016. All patients completed questionnaires on women’s health. The differences between patients with and without breast AH were compared. AH breast lesions were detected by Raman spectroscopy followed by the SHINERS technique. Results There were no significant differences in clinical features and risk-related factors between patients with breast AH (n = 37) and the control group (n = 2576). Fifteen cases of breast AH lesions were detected by Raman spectroscopy. The main different Raman peaks in patients with AH appeared at 880, 1001, 1086, 1156, 1260, and 1610 cm −1 , attributed to the different vibrational modes of nucleic acids, β-carotene, and proteins. Shell-isolated nanoparticles had different enhancement effects on the nucleic acid, protein, and lipid components in AH. Conclusion Raman spectroscopy can detect characteristic molecular changes in breast AH lesions, and may thus be useful for the non-invasive early diagnosis and for investigating the mechanism of tumorigenesis in patients with breast AH.

    Abstract: Little is known about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, among truck drivers in China. A cross-sectional study was conducted among truck drivers in Tongling of Anhui Province. A total of 550 truck drivers were interviewed with a structured questionnaire, and blood samples were collected and tested for HIV, syphilis, and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), and urine specimens for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. Prevalence was 10.6% for C. trachomatis and 8.1% for N. gonorrhoeae. Antibodies for syphilis were found in 0.7% and for HSV-2 in 4.4%, and none was positive for HIV. About 92 (17.4%) truck drivers had at least one STI. There was no statistically significant association between sociodemographic, occupation or behavioural variables and the presence of a positive test for any STI. Our study suggests a high prevalence of STIs, particularly bacterial infections, among the truck drivers, indicating the need for health education, behavioural change interventions and STI care services in this population.

    Abstract: Conventional therapy may be inadequate for many patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may be a viable alternative, but its effectiveness for axSpA is unknown. We are currently conducting a pragmatic randomised controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the effectiveness of a TCM collaborative model of care (TCMCMC), which combines usual rheumatologic care with acupuncture for patients with axSpA. This nested qualitative sub-study aims to identify facilitators of and barriers to the implementation of the TCMCMC. Methods: We conducted individual in-depth interviews with participants who had completed the acupuncture regimen to elicit opinions on the facilitators of and barriers to the implementation of the TCMCMC. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Twelve participants were included, with data saturation occurring after 10 interviews. The analysis revealed both a number of important ‘facilitators’ and ‘barriers’. Facilitators to the implementation of the TCMCMC included effectiveness of TCM to relieve symptoms, inadequacy of conventional treatment and positive social perceptions of TCM. Barriers included scepticism towards TCM, inability of TCM to provide instant relief, needle-related discomfort, variable effectiveness of TCM influenced by physicians’ skills and experience and the high cost of TCM. Recommendations to overcome barriers included further patient education about TCM. Conclusion: Policymakers should take into account the various feasibility factors identified in this study when developing and implementing a TCMCMC.     Abstract: To investigate potential clinical characteristics associated with discordance between platelet vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein phosphorylation (VASP-P) flow cytometry (FCM) assay and light transmission aggregometry (LTA) in defining high on-clopidogrel platelet reactivity (HPR) after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In this study, platelet responsiveness was measured by the above 2 methods simultaneously on day 1 and on day 6 of STEMI onset in 90 consecutive patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention. The FCM-derived platelet reactivity index and LTA-derived platelet aggregation rate were both significantly reduced after dual antiplatelet therapy on day 6. Multiple variable-adjusted logistic regression analysis revealed that smoking (odds ratio [OR]: 4.507, 95% confidence interval [CI] : 1.123-18.09, P = .034) and onset-to-admission time (per 1 hour increase, OR: 1.196, 95% CI: 1.023-1.398, P = .025) both were independent predictors for the discordance between the 2 methods. Additionally, improved correlation and concordance was observed in nonsmokers compared with smokers. Our data show that smoking and prolonged onset-to-admission time are associated with discordance between platelet VASP-P and LTA in defining HPR after STEMI, which should be considered when planning personalized antiplatelet therapy.

    Abstract: To investigate the doses of total body (TBI) and whole abdominal irradiation (WAI) induced lethal intestinal injury, healthy C57BL/6 J mice were divided randomly into 7 groups: control group; 6, 7, and 8 Gy TBI groups; and 5, 10, and 15 Gy WAI groups. The survival length, general conditions, body weight, daily food and water intake of the mice and the histopathological changes of small intestine were observed. Results: Lethal injury among C57BL/6 J mice was caused by ≥6 Gy TBI and 15 Gy WAI. Their body weight and food intake decreased, the structure of their small intestinal villi was destroyed, and the number of surviving crypts per circumference of the jejunum decreased in ≥6 Gy TBI groups and 15 Gy WAI group. The mice in the 10 Gy WAI group significantly lost weight within 5 days but recovered slowly thereafter. They also had poor appetite and reversibly damaged intestinal mucosa. Conclusions: Nonlethal intestinal injury could be induced by 10 Gy WAI, whereas lethal intestinal injury could be triggered by ≥6 Gy TBI and 〉 15 Gy WAI in mice. Our results provided a basis for establishing radiation-induced intestinal injury models with C57BL/6 J mice.

    Abstract: A novel two-photon absorption (TPA) material with phenanthrolin as acceptor (BSIPB) has been firstly synthesized and studied as possible fluorescence probe for nucleic acids detection. The single-photon and two-photon fluorescence properties of the dye in the unbound state and in DNA complexes were investigated. Some quantum yields and TPA cross sections at important points were calculated. The results showed that BSIPB can be used as an efficient fluorescent probes for DNA detection and imaging under both single-photon excitation (SPE) and two-photon excitation (TPE).

    Abstract: Cell therapy has been shown to be a key clinical therapeutic option for central nervous system diseases or damage. Standardization of clinical cell therapy procedures is an important task for professional associations devoted to cell therapy. The Chinese Branch of the International Association of Neurorestoratology (IANR) completed the first set of guidelines governing the clinical application of neurorestoration in 2011. The IANR and the Chinese Association of Neurorestoratology (CANR) collaborated to propose the current version “Clinical Cell Therapy Guidelines for Neurorestoration (IANR/CANR 2017)”. The IANR council board members and CANR committee members approved this proposal on September 1, 2016, and recommend it to clinical practitioners of cellular therapy. These guidelines include items of cell type nomenclature, cell quality control, minimal suggested cell doses, patient-informed consent, indications for undergoing cell therapy, contraindications for undergoing cell therapy, documentation of procedure and therapy, safety evaluation, efficacy evaluation, policy of repeated treatments, do not charge patients for unproven therapies, basic principles of cell therapy, and publishing responsibility.

    Abstract: The aim of this study was to present our 10-year experience of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) management with pediatric liver recipients and to understand the importance of close interdisciplinary cooperation in 2 hospitals. Methods: A retrospective chart review study was performed according to our hospital’s medical records and the pediatric liver transplant database of Renji hospital. Results: A total of 767 patients received liver transplantation (LT) performed in Renji hospital between October 2006 and December 2016, of which 97 of them were admitted to PICU in our center for various complications developed after transplantation. 8.8% (16/208) and 14.4% (81/559) of patients were transferred to PICU in stages I and II, respectively, and was comparable in the 2 stages ( P = .017). The majority of patients was late postoperative children (median 185 post-LT days) in stage I. More patients were transferred to PICU directly in stage II. PICU admitted more younger (median 8.2 months) and early postoperative patients in stage II. The median length of PICU stay was 11.0 (6.0-20.5) days. The median length of mechanical ventilation was 5.0 (0.0-12.0) days. The most frequent complications were pulmonary complications (52 [53.6%] patients), surgical complications (22 [22.7%] patients), sepsis (7 [7.2%]), and other miscellaneous complications (16 [16.5%] patients). The overall 28-day PICU mortality was 25.8% (n = 25) and 64.0% (n = 16) of the deaths happened in the early postoperative period. There was significant difference concerning mortality in children with surgical complications and medical problems (54.5% [12/22] vs 17.3% [13/75], P = .001). Multivariate analysis by regression showed that the pediatric risk of mortality III score was the only independent prognostic factor ( P = .031). Conclusions: Multiple complications occur in children with LT. Although challenging, interdisciplinary cooperation between different hospitals is an effective mean to enable children to maximize the benefit gained from LT in China.

    Abstract: Recent studies have demonstrated that lymphocytes play a key role in ischemic brain injury. However, there is still a lack of viable approaches to non-invasively track infiltrating lymphocytes and reveal their key spatiotemporal events in the inflamed central nervous system (CNS). Here we describe an in vivo imaging approach for sequential monitoring of brain-infiltrating CD4 + T cells in experimental ischemic stroke. We show that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or Xenogen imaging combined with labeling of SPIO-Molday ION Rhodamine-B (MIRB) can be used to monitor the dynamics of CD4 + T cells in a passive transfer model. MIRB-labeled CD4 + T cells can be longitudinally visualized in the mouse brain and peripheral organs such as the spleen and liver after cerebral ischemia. Immunostaining of tissue sections showed similar kinetics of MIRB-labeled CD4 + T cells when compared with in vivo observations. Our results demonstrated the use of MIRB coupled with in vivo imaging as a valid method to track CD4 + T cells in ischemic brain injury. This approach will facilitate future investigations to identify the dynamics and key spatiotemporal events for brain-infiltrating lymphocytes in CNS inflammatory diseases.
