    Abstract: The genus Piper is one of the largest genera in the Piperaceae, with most species widely distributed globally, covering all continents. To date, many Piper species have been scientifically investigated for their chemical diversities and interesting broad spectrum of bioactivities, including central nervous system (CNS), pesticidal, antifungal and antibacterial effects. This review systematically summarizes the scaffolds of the alkaloids reported, the major chemicals isolated from Piper spp., and their biological activities. Besides the alkaloids, some neolignans with rearranged skeletons show structural diversities, while the chalcones, flavonoids and kava-pyrones have some potential activities. Herein, the sesquiterpenes and phenolic compounds from Piper species and their bioactivities are also surveyed.

    Abstract: Abstract The objective of this study was to examine the association of alcohol drinking and lipid profile with infrarenal aortic dimension. The diameter of the infrarenal aorta was measured using ultrasound in 395 individuals (mean 66.6 ± 10.3 years) with atherosclerotic diseases or risk factors. The associations between heavy drinking, serum lipoprotein (a) levels, lipid profile and infrarenal aorta diameters were examined. Heavy drinking and lipoprotein (a) were positively related with infrarenal aortic dimension, while low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-C and total cholesterol (TC)/HDL-C were negatively associated with infrarenal aortic diameter ( p  〈  0.05). In addition, there were negative associations of LDL-C/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C and positive associations of HDL-C and apolipoprotein AI (Apo AI) with heavy drinking ( p  〈  0.05). In conclusion, there was a positive association between infrarenal aortic diameters and heavy drinking, as well as lipoprotein (a) levels. Furthermore, the novel and unexpected inverse association between LDL-C/HDL-C, LDL-C, TC/HDL-C and abdominal aortic diameter may suggest a possible role for anti-atherogenic lipid profile (characterized by a higher level of HDL-C and lower level of LDL-C) in aortic dilatation processes, which need to be clarified by further studies.

    Abstract: This study aimed to develop a Chinese Mental Resilience Scale. A total of 2500 healthy participants, in two representative samples of the Chinese population, were administered the scale. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and correlation analysis were used to obtain the relevant coefficients and verify the reliability and validity of the scale. Five factors were extracted: willpower, family support, optimism and self-confidence, problem solving, and interpersonal interaction, plus a lying subscale, which together accounted for 54 percent of the total variance. The Chinese Mental Resilience Scale demonstrated good psychometric properties. It can be used to evaluate the mental resilience level of general Chinese population.

    Abstract: Whether electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation at different frequencies has a similar effect on spared nerve injury (SNI) as other neuropathic pain models, and how EA at different frequencies causes distinct analgesic effects on neuropathic pain is still not clear. Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham SNI, SNI, 2 Hz, 100 Hz and sham EA groups. Paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) and paw withdrawal latency (PWL) were measured. EA was performed once a day on days 1 to 14 after SNI. The expressions of transient receptor potential cation subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) and peripheral purinergic P2X receptor 3 (P2X3) were determined by western blotting and immunofluorescence. TRPV1 siRNA and P2X3 siRNA were administered by intrathecal injection. TRPV1 or P2X3 agonists were combined with EA. Results: There were significant decreases in PWT, but no changes in PWL in the 14 days after SNI. EA using 2- or 100-Hz stimulation similarly increased PWT at every time point. The cytosol protein expression of P2X3 in the L4–L6 dorsal root ganglia (DRG) increased, but the expression of TRPV1 decreased in the SNI model. Both these effects were ameliorated by EA, with 2-Hz stimulation having a stronger effect than 100-Hz stimulation. Blocking either TRPV1 or P2X3 specific siRNAs attenuated the decreased PWT induced by SNI. Administration of either a TRPV1 or P2X3 agonist inhibited EA analgesia. Conclusion: 2- and 100-Hz EA similarly induced analgesic effects in SNI. This effect was related to up-regulation and down-regulation, respectively, of cytosol protein expression of P2X3 and TRPV1 in L4–L6 DRG, with 2 Hz having a better effect than 100 Hz.

    Abstract: The present study explored potential forms of impact protection for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. Charpy impact tests were performed on CFRP rods and strands under protections of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and poly-ethylen (PE). In the experimental program, the impact damage pattern and absorbed energy of CFRP tendons with and without external protection were obtained. The results show that the energy absorption capacity of CFRP tendons was improved under the protection of surface layers; and PE layers exhibited the highest protection effectiveness among all protection forms in terms of the increased absorbed energy and caused additional structural weight. Besides, two empirical expressions were established to quantify the relationship between the thickness of PE layers and the energy absorption capacity of the protected CFRP tendons, which may provide a simple tool to estimate the thickness of the layer required for the protection of a specific CFRP tendon in practical applications.

    Abstract: High ethical sensitivity positively affects the quality of nursing care; nevertheless, Chinese nurses’ ethical sensitivity and the factors influencing it have not been described. Research objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe ethical sensitivity and to explore factors influencing it among Chinese-registered nurses, to help nursing administrators improve nurses’ ethical sensitivity, build harmony between nurses and patients, and promote the patients’ health. Research design: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Participants and research context: We recruited 500 nurses from several departments in three tertiary hospitals. The Chinese Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire–Revised version and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals were used to assess the nurses’ ethical sensitivity and empathy ability, respectively. Fifteen sociodemographic variables were included in the questionnaires. Ethical considerations: Informed consent was obtained from the participants regarding participation and data storage and handling. This program has been examined and supported by the research center of medical ethics and professional ethics of Guilin Medical University. The Approval No. was 2016RWYB04. The whole research process is conducted strictly according to ethical requirements. Results: The valid response rate was 84.40% ( n = 422). The total score of Chinese Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire–Revised was 35.82 ± 8.17. The subscale scores of moral responsibility and strength and sense of moral burden were 21.50 ± 4.91 and 14.33 ± 3.98, respectively. Significant differences were found among age groups, gender, years of working, category of profession, and quality of family communication regarding nurses’ ethical sensitivity ( p 〈 0.05). Regression analysis showed that the main factors influencing nurses’ ethical sensitivity were gender, years of working, quality of family communication, career satisfaction, and empathic ability. Discussion: Our findings suggest that Chinese nurses’ ethical sensitivity in tertiary hospitals in Guilin is at a medium level. Conclusion: The director of nursing schools and hospitals in China should pay attention to nurses’ ethical sensitivity and should intensify education and training to improve nurses’ ethical sensitivity. Further studies should focus on interventions aimed at improving Chinese nurses’ ethical sensitivity.

    Abstract: Peripheral inflammatory and neuropathic pain are closely related to the activation of purinergic receptor P2X ligand-gated ion channel 3 (P2X3) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), but the interaction between P2X3 and TRPV1 in different types of pathological pain has rarely been reported. In this study, complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain and spared nerve injury (SNI)-induced neuropathic pain models were established in adult rats. The interactions between P2X3 and TRPV1 in the dorsal root ganglion were observed by pharmacological, co-immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence and whole-cell patch-clamp recording assays. TRPV1 was shown to promote the induction of spontaneous pain caused by P2X3 in the SNI model, but the induction of spontaneous pain behaviour by TRPV1 was not completely dependent on P2X3 in vivo. In both the CFA and SNI models, the activation of peripheral P2X3 enhanced the effect of TRPV1 on spontaneous pain, while the inhibition of peripheral TRPV1 reduced the induction of spontaneous pain by P2X3 in the CFA model. TRPV1 and P2X3 had inhibitory effects on each other in the inflammatory pain model. During neuropathic pain, P2X3 facilitated the function of TRPV1, while TRPV1 had an inhibitory effect on P2X3. These results suggest that the mutual effects of P2X3 and TRPV1 differ in cases of inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rats.

    Abstract: In this paper, a new modelling approach is proposed for the dynamic investigation of epicyclic gear train, and the novelty of this work lies in consideration of both structural flexibility and mechanical interactions during the analysis procedure. The method is of capacity to directly present the dynamic results of the supporting structure for convenient practical engineering evaluation and reduce the dimension of the system reasonably with appropriate assumptions for better computational efficiency. Firstly, the mechanical interactions among components are discussed in detail, and the principle that the structural flexibility works is also explained at length. Secondly, taking the epicyclic gear train of the geared turbofan (GTF) engine; for example, the dynamic model of the system is then established based on the developed hybrid user-defined elements. For model validation, the governing equations of the system are also derived by the lumped mass method. Thirdly, with the same values of the parameters, the results of normal dynamic meshing force obtained by the proposed model are compared with the ones by the lumped mass model. It can be stated from the data that (1) the maximum relative error between the theoretical value and the average value calculated by the two models is 8.28%, (2) the gear mesh frequency obtained by the two models are sufficiently close to the theoretical value, and (3) the fluctuation trends of the dynamic force keep basically consistent with each other. In summary, the comparison presented clearly indicates that the proposed model is indeed reasonable, which provides a new way for dynamic investigation and structural redesign of a large epicyclic gear train. Finally, as a practical engineering application, the vibration result of the deformable supporting structure of the GTF gear train is also presented, which directly provides valuable reference for vibration monitoring, fault diagnosis and other engineering problems in practice.

    Abstract: RNA-binding protein fox-1 homolog 1 (Rbfox-1), an RNA-binding protein in neurons, is thought to be associated with many neurological diseases. To date, the mechanism on which Rbfox-1 worsens secondary cell death in ICH remains poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of Rbfox-1 in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)-induced secondary brain injury (SBI) and to identify its underlying mechanisms. We found that the expression of Rbfox-1 in neurons was significantly increased after ICH, which was accompanied by increases in the binding of Rbfox-1 to Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKIIα) mRNA and the protein level of CaMKIIα. In addition, when exposed to exogenous upregulation or downregulation of Rbfox-1, the protein level of CaMKIIα showed a concomitant trend in brain tissue, which further suggested that CaMKIIα is a downstream-target protein of Rbfox-1. The upregulation of both proteins caused intracellular-Ca 2+ overload and neuronal degeneration, which exacerbated brain damage. Furthermore, we found that Rbfox-1 promoted the expression of CaMKIIα via blocking the binding of micro-RNA-124 to CaMKIIα mRNA. Thus, Rbfox-1 is expected to be a promising therapeutic target for SBI after ICH.
