    Abstract: Open Science is becoming a mainstream scientific ideology in psychology and related fields. However, researchers, especially early-career researchers (ECRs) in developing countries, are facing significant hurdles in engaging in Open Science and moving it forward. In China, various societal and cultural factors discourage ECRs from participating in Open Science, such as the lack of dedicated communication channels and the norm of modesty. To make the voice of Open Science heard by Chinese-speaking ECRs and scholars at large, the Chinese Open Science Network (COSN) was initiated in 2016. With its core values being grassroots-oriented, diversity, and inclusivity, COSN has grown from a small Open Science interest group to a recognized network both in the Chinese-speaking research community and the international Open Science community. So far, COSN has organized three in-person workshops, 12 tutorials, 48 talks, and 55 journal club sessions and translated 15 Open Science-related articles and blogs from English to Chinese. Currently, the main social media account of COSN (i.e., the WeChat Official Account) has more than 23,000 subscribers, and more than 1,000 researchers/students actively participate in the discussions on Open Science. In this article, we share our experience in building such a network to encourage ECRs in developing countries to start their own Open Science initiatives and engage in the global Open Science movement. We foresee great collaborative efforts of COSN together with all other local and international networks to further accelerate the Open Science movement.

    Abstract: To explore the rationale and value of consolidative cranial local therapy (CLT) in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastases (BMs). Methods: EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients with baseline BMs who received first-line EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) at two academic centers from May 2015 to June 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Patterns of tumor response and treatment failure were extensively analyzed in order to explore the rationale of CLT. Cranial lesions with number ⩽3 and largest tumor size ⩽3 cm at baseline and best response to EGFR-TKIs were defined as oligo-BMs and oligo-residual cranial disease (ORCD), respectively. To provide preliminary data supporting CLT, survival outcomes were compared in patients with ORCD, stratified by CLT status. Results: Of the 216 patients enrolled, 57.1% had oligo-BMs and 24.5% received first-line osimertinib. At best response to the first-line EGFR-TKIs, intracranial complete response, partial response, and stable disease occurred in 18.5, 31.9, and 44.4% of the whole population, respectively. For patients without CLT ( n = 193), ORCD was observed in 78.1% of the 105 patients with baseline oligo-BMs and 10.2% of the 88 patients with baseline multiple-BMs. With a median follow-up of 22.8 months, 107 patients had cranial first progressive disease (PD); more than 60% developed their first PD solely from the residual tumor sites at best response to EGFR-TKIs. Moreover, among patients with ORCD ( n = 108), patients who received CLT ( n = 17) achieved significantly longer progression-free survival (13.4 versus 8.5 months, p = 0.001) and overall survival (58.9 versus 28.8 months, p = 0.021) than those without CLT. Meanwhile, CLT remained as an independent prognostic factor associated with improved survival after Cox regression analyses. Conclusions: Cranial progressive disease developed mostly at the residual cranial lesions in EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients with baseline BMs who received first-line EGFR-TKIs. Consolidative cranial local therapy targeting the oligo-residual cranial tumor lesions may provide survival benefit, which warrants future validation.

    Abstract: Hypoxia is an important factor that causes decreased local disease control as well as increased distant metastases and resistance to radiotherapy in patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Gambogic acid (GA), the major active ingredient of gamboge, exerts antitumor effects in vitro and in vivo. However, the molecular mechanism by which GA inhibits tumor radioresistance remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the radiosensitizing effects of GA on NPC and explore the underlying mechanisms. Materials and methods CNE-1 and CNE-2 cells exposed to hypoxia and radiation were treated with GA at different concentrations. CCK-8 assay, clonogenic assay, and flow cytometry were performed to analyze cell proliferation, colony formation, apoptosis, and cell cycle. The expression levels of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), Bcl-2, Bax, caspase-3, cyclin B1/p-cdc2 and γ-H2AX were assessed using Western blot and/or immunofluorescence analysis. Results Results of the CCK-8 assay, clonogenic assay, and flow cytometry showed that treatment of NPC cells with growth-suppressive concentrations of GA resulted in G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis. Western blot analysis demonstrated that GA-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in CNE-2 cells was associated with upregulated expression of caspase-3 and Bax and downregulated expression of Bcl-2 and cyclin B1/p-cdc2 in hypoxia. Treatment with GA markedly decreased the expression of HIF-1α under hypoxic conditions. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that GA efficiently radiosensitizes NPC cells and the effect may be significant in hypoxic conditions.

    Abstract: Stratospheric airships are important platforms for near-space enduring cruising capability for several applications. Since energy shortage is one of major limiting factors in stratospheric airship, it is crucial to develop novel methods to reduce the requirement on energy systems. In this article, optimal trajectory of stratospheric airship in gradient wind fields is investigated in order to reduce energy consumption. First, polynomial expressions for wind gradients are assumed, and three-dimensional point mass airship equations of motion are used. Then the variety characters of energy for stratospheric airship are studied, the minimum power output of power system is taken as the optimizing target, and collocation approach is used to convert the trajectory optimization problem into parameters optimization. The characters of stratospheric airship’s cruising in three typical wind field are analyzed, including control and state parameters time histories, power changes for airship system, and so on. This research work shows that the greater the wind gradient, the more favorable to reduce energy consumptions, but the speed of the gradient wind cannot be too high.

    Abstract: 20-HETE, an arachidonic acid metabolite synthesized by cytochrome P450 4A, plays an important role in acute brain damage from ischemic stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage. We tested the hypothesis that 20-HETE inhibition has a protective effect after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and then investigated its effect on angiogenesis. We exposed hippocampal slice cultures to hemoglobin and induced ICH in mouse brains by intrastriatal collagenase injection to investigate the protective effect of 20-HETE synthesis inhibitor N-hydroxy-N′-(4- n-butyl-2-methylphenyl)-formamidine (HET0016). Hemoglobin-induced neuronal death was assessed by propidium iodide after 18 h in vitro. Lesion volume, neurologic deficits, cell death, reactive oxygen species (ROS), neuroinflammation, and angiogenesis were evaluated at different time points after ICH. In cultured mouse hippocampal slices, HET0016 attenuated hemoglobin-induced neuronal death and decreased levels of proinflammatory cytokines and ROS. In vivo, HET0016 reduced brain lesion volume and neurologic deficits, and decreased neuronal death, ROS production, gelatinolytic activity, and the inflammatory response at three days after ICH. However, HET0016 did not inhibit angiogenesis, as levels of CD31, VEGF, and VEGFR2 were unchanged on day 28. We conclude that 20-HETE is involved in ICH-induced brain damage. Inhibition of 20-HETE synthesis may provide a viable means to mitigate ICH injury without inhibition of angiogenesis.

    Abstract: Like albatross, unmanned aerial vehicles can significantly make use of wind gradient to extract energy by the flight technique named dynamic soaring. The research aims to develop a general optimization method to compute all the possible patterns of dynamic soaring with a small unmanned aerial vehicle. A direct collocation approach based on the Runge-Kutta integrator is proposed to solve the trajectory optimization problem for dynamic soaring. The optimal dynamic soaring trajectories are classified into two patterns: closed trajectory pattern and travelling trajectory pattern by applying terminal constraints of zero horizontal displacement and a certain travelling direction, respectively. Using different terminal constrains for heading angle and initial guesses in the optimization process, the former pattern can be divided into two subtypes: O-shaped and 8-shaped trajectories, while the latter one is divided into C-shaped, α-shaped, S-shaped and Ω-shaped trajectories. The characteristics of these patterns and the correlation among patterns are analyzed and discussed.

    Abstract: We quantitatively evaluated the dose-response association of low and normal ankle brachial index (ABI) with the risk of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched for cohort studies. Random effects or fixed effects models were used to estimate the pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Generalized least squares regression was used to assess study-specific dose-response associations per 0.1 ABI decrease. Restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate linear or nonlinear trends. Twelve cohort studies (57 031 participants) were included in this meta-analysis. For low vs normal ABI levels, the pooled RRs were 2.03 (95% CI, 1.72–2.41; I 2 = 52.9%; p heterogeneity =0.030) and 2.29 (95% CI, 1.98–2.64; I 2 = 39.5%; p heterogeneity =0.158) for CVD morbidity and CVD mortality, respectively. For per 0.1 ABI decrease from 1.40 the risk for CVD morbidity and CVD mortality increased by 8% (1.08, 95% CI 1.04–1.11) and 11% (1.11, 95% CI 1.07–1.15), respectively. Restricted cubic splines showed inverse linear associations for CVD morbidity and CVD mortality. As a non-invasive index, lower ABI was significantly associated with the increased risk of morbidity and mortality from CVDs in an inverse linear manner.

    Abstract: With the popularity of mobile Internet technology, mobile government has become the mainstream of current government affairs management, which highlights the growing importance of exploring citizens’ intention to adopt m-government. To find the important driving factors of m-government adoption and understand what roles the cultural and technical development level play in it, this study conducted a meta-analysis to search for important factors in m-government adoption from 42 studies from 17 countries. Based on the socio-technical theory, this study applied a meta-regression to explain the differences in the effects of these factors, from the perspective of culture and technical development level. The results show that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, social influence, perceived compatibility and trust all play important roles in m-government adoption. Culture and technical development level play moderating roles on the above relationships except for the perceived ease of use–perceived usefulness path. Our findings also reveal that the joint moderating effect of cultural and technical development level can better explain the impact of environmental factors on m-government adoption and consequently provide suggestions for the future implementation of m-government in different countries with diverse cultures. Points for practitioners This study proposes a research model of m-government adoption. Public managers should focus on citizens’ perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, social influence, perceived compatibility and trust, so as to improve citizens’ intention to use. The results also confirm that culture and technical development level have a specific moderating effect on m-government adoption, which means that public managers should not only consider service quality, but also note environmental factors. They especially should consider the flexible mobile government development strategies in different countries.
