    Abstract: Although the original purpose of the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) classification criteria was to distinguish SLE from other mimic diseases, and to facilitate sample selection in scientific research, they have become widely used as diagnostic criteria in clinical situations. It is not known yet if regarding classification criteria as diagnostic criteria, what problems might be encountered? This is the first study comparing the three sets of classification criteria for SLE, the 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR’97), 2012 Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC’12) and 2019 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR’19), for their ability to distinguish patients with SLE from patients with pure mucocutaneous manifestations (isolated cutaneous lupus erythematosus without internal disease, i-CLE) in the lupus disease spectrum. 1,865 patients with SLE and 232 patients with i-CLE were recruited from a multicenter study. We found that, due to low specificity, none of the three criteria are adept at distinguishing patients with SLE from patients with i-CLE. SLICC’12 performed best among the original three criteria, but if a positive ANA was removed as an entry criterion, EULAR/ACR’19 would performed better. A review of previous studies that compared the three sets of criteria was presented in this work.

    Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic led to profound changes in the organization of health care systems worldwide. Aims We sought to measure the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes for mechanical thrombectomy, stroke, and intracranial hemorrhage hospitalizations over a three-month period at the height of the pandemic (1 March–31 May 2020) compared with two control three-month periods (immediately preceding and one year prior). Methods Retrospective, observational, international study, across 6 continents, 40 countries, and 187 comprehensive stroke centers. The diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes and/or classifications in stroke databases at participating centers. Results The hospitalization volumes for any stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and mechanical thrombectomy were 26,699, 4002, and 5191 in the three months immediately before versus 21,576, 3540, and 4533 during the first three pandemic months, representing declines of 19.2% (95%CI, −19.7 to −18.7), 11.5% (95%CI, −12.6 to −10.6), and 12.7% (95%CI, −13.6 to −11.8), respectively. The decreases were noted across centers with high, mid, and low COVID-19 hospitalization burden, and also across high, mid, and low volume stroke/mechanical thrombectomy centers. High-volume COVID-19 centers (−20.5%) had greater declines in mechanical thrombectomy volumes than mid- (−10.1%) and low-volume (−8.7%) centers (p  〈  0.0001). There was a 1.5% stroke rate across 54,366 COVID-19 hospitalizations. SARS-CoV-2 infection was noted in 3.9% (784/20,250) of all stroke admissions. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a global decline in the volume of overall stroke hospitalizations, mechanical thrombectomy procedures, and intracranial hemorrhage admission volumes. Despite geographic variations, these volume reductions were observed regardless of COVID-19 hospitalization burden and pre-pandemic stroke/mechanical thrombectomy volumes.

    Abstract: Early diagnosis can help prevent and reduce the adverse effects of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This study intended to investigate key circulating long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as novel biomarkers for diagnosis of GDM at the early stages. First, lncRNA microarray analysis was conducted for plasma samples of GDM women before delivery and 48 h after delivery. The expression of differentially expressed lncRNAs in clinical samples at different trimesters was randomly validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Moreover, the correlation between lncRNA expression and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) level in GDM women during the second trimester was analyzed, followed by evaluating the diagnostic value of key lncRNAs during different trimesters using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Higher NONHSAT054669.2 expression and lower ENST00000525337 expression were revealed in GDM women before delivery relative to 48 h after delivery ( P  〈  0.05). The expression of NONHSAT054669.2 and ENST00000525337 in GDM women during the first and second trimesters was dramatically higher than pregnant women ( P  〈  0.05) with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). During the second trimester, NONHSAT054669.2 expression was positively related to OGTT level at 1 h ( r = 0.41455, P  〈  0.001). Furthermore, ROC curve analysis revealed that ENST00000525337 alone, NONHSAT054669.2 alone, and their combination had high diagnostic value for GDM during the first (area under the ROC curve (AUC) = 0.979, 0.956, and 0.984, respectively) and second (AUC = 0.829, 0.809, and 0.838, respectively) trimesters (all P  〈  0.001). The plasma level of NONHSAT054669.2 and ENST00000525337 may be applied as novel diagnostic biomarkers for early diagnosis of GDM.

    Abstract: Planetary gears are recognized as one of the most effective forms of power transmission. A dynamic model of an N-stage power-split planetary gear set is proposed in this article. Three-dimensional translations and axial rotation of all members, mesh stiffness, bearing stiffness, and the interstage coupling stiffness are considered. Subsequently, equations of motion of the whole system are derived. Natural frequencies and vibration modes are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem governed by corresponding equations. According to the modal properties, all vibration modes of the N-stage system can be categorized as N + 2 groups: the overall axial translational–rotational mode, the overall radical translational mode, and the ith-stage planet mode ( N i   〉  3). Furthermore, the typical vibration modes of a two-stage system are graphed. It is also found that the radical interstage coupling stiffness has an impact on natural frequencies of the overall radical translational modes, while the axial and twist coupling stiffness only affect the natural frequencies of the overall axial translational–rotational modes.

    Abstract: Currently, there are no definitive therapies for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Gut microbial dysbiosis has been proved to be associated with COVID-19 severity and probiotics is an adjunctive therapy for COIVD-19. However, the potential benefit of probiotics in COVID-19 has not been studied. We aimed to assess the relationship of probiotics use with clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Methods: We conducted a propensity-score matched retrospective cohort study of adult patients with COVID-19. Eligible patients received either probiotics plus standard care (probiotics group) or standard care alone (non-probiotics group). The primary outcome was the clinical improvement rate, which was compared among propensity-score matched groups and in the unmatched cohort. Secondary outcomes included the duration of viral shedding, fever, and hospital stay. Results: Among the propensity-score matched groups, probiotics use was related to clinical improvement rates (log-rank p = 0.028). This relationship was driven primarily by a shorter (days) time to clinical improvement [difference, −3 (−4 to −1), p = 0.022], reduction in duration of fever [−1.0 (−2.0 to 0.0), p = 0.025] , viral shedding [−3 (−6 to −1), p  〈  0.001], and hospital stay [−3 (−5 to −1), p = 0.009] . Using the Cox model with time-varying exposure, use of probiotics remained independently related to better clinical improvement rate in the unmatched cohort. Conclusion: Our study suggested that probiotics use was related to improved clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Further studies are required to validate the effect of probiotics in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Abstract: Objectives: To compare differences in self-rated oral health among community-dwelling Black, Hispanic, and White adults aged 60 and older. Method: A total of 4,859 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2004) provided self-report information on oral health. Results: Blacks and Hispanics reported poorer self-rated oral health than Whites. In separate dentate and edentulous groups, socioeconomic status, social support, physical health, clinical oral health outcomes, and dental checkups accounted for much of the difference in self-rated oral health in Blacks, but significant differences remained for Hispanics. Discussion: The study findings may have important implications for health policy and program development. Programs and services designed for minority populations should target treatments for dental diseases and include components that take into account subjective evaluations of oral health conditions and perceived dental needs of the individuals.

    Abstract: Epoxy (Ep) resin modified with carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene (CTPB) liquid rubber was investigated in this study. Fourier transform infrared verified the chemical reactions between oxirane ring of Ep and carboxyl groups of CTPB using benzyldimethylamine as a catalyst. The decrease of the thermal stability could be due to the lower thermal stability of CTPB compared with that of pure Ep. The mechanical results showed that CTPB-modified Ep was superior to that of the pure Ep, and the best overall mechanical properties were normally achieved with 20 phr of CTPB content. The impact strength of the system containing 20 phr CTPB increased by 193% due to the two-phase nature of the system. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor of the modified Ep obviously declined with the CTPB content compared with pure Ep, for instance, the dissipation factor remained less than 0.02 in wide frequency range.

    Abstract: The prognosis of lung cancer varies widely, even in cases wherein the tumor stage, genetic mutation, and treatment regimens are the same. Thus, an effective means for risk stratification of patients with lung cancer is needed. Purpose To develop and validate a combined model for predicting progression-free survival and risk stratification in patients with advanced anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with ensartinib. Material and Methods We analyzed 203 tumor lesions in 114 patients and evaluated average radiomic feature measures from all lesions at baseline and changes in these features after early treatment (Δradiomic features). Combined models were developed by integrating clinical with radiomic features. The prediction performance and clinical value of the proposed models were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic analysis, calibration curve, decision curve analysis (DCA), and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Results Both the baseline and delta combined models achieved predictive efficacy with a high area under the curve. The calibration curve and DCA indicated the high accuracy and clinical usefulness of the combined models for tumor progression prediction. In the Kaplan–Meier analysis, the delta and baseline combined models, Δradiomic signature, and two selected clinical features could distinguish patients with a higher progression risk within 42 weeks. The delta combined model had the best performance. Conclusion The combination of clinical and radiomic features provided a prognostic value for survival and progression in patients with NSCLC receiving ensartinib. Radiomic-signature changes after early treatment could be more valuable than those at baseline alone.

    Abstract: This study was to investigate the differential mitochondrial protein expressions in human lung adenocarcinoma and provide preliminary data for further exploration of the carcinogenic mechanism. Methods Total proteins of A549 and 16HBE mitochondria were extracted through 2D polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE). The differential mitochondria proteins were identified by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and were further confirmed by Western blot, immunoelectron microscopy and immunohistochemistry (IHC) in A549 cells as well as lung adenocarcinoma tissues. Results A total of 41 differentially expressed protein spots were found in A549 mitochondria. Of them, 15 proteins were highly expressed and 26 proteins were lowly expressed in the mitochondria of A549 (by more than 1.5 times). Among the 15 more highly expressed proteins, AAA-TOB3 (by more than 3 times) was highly expressed in the mitochondria of A549 compared with the 16HBE, by LC-MS/MS identification. High electron density and clear circular colloidal gold-marked AAA-TOB3 particles were observed in the A549 cells via immunoelectron microscopy. Besides, AAA-TOB3 was confirmed to be elevated in lung adenocarcinoma by Western blot and IHC. Moreover, increased AAA-TOB3 correlated with lymph node metastasis and advanced stage of lung adenocarcinoma (p 〈 0.05). Conclusions AAA-TOB3 was highly expressed in lung adenocarcinoma, and the up-regulation of AAA-TOB3 correlated with lymph node metastasis and advanced stage of lung adenocarcinoma, which suggested that it could serve as a potential molecular marker for lung adenocarcinoma.
