    Abstract: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have high potential for the modification of glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite laminates. This paper reports the fabrication of CNTs/GFRP composite laminates using ultrasonication and the hand lay-up method. The aim of this study is to investigate the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength of composites consisting of several different proportions of CNTs. When CNT content is 0.75 percent hundred resin (phr), the mechanical properties are the best. The ILSS was significantly improved 15.7% and flexural strength improved 9.2%. The effects of addition of CNTs on the mechanical performances were evaluated with respect to retention of high-temperature properties up to 200 °C. It was found that ILSS, flexural strength and bending modulus were significantly enhanced by CNTs at different temperatures. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was employed to measure the storage modulus of composite laminates. To consider the effect of temperature on GFRP and CNTs/GFRP composite laminates, the results showed the trends in the temperature-dependence and were nearly identical to the ILSS, flexural strength, bending modulus and dynamic properties. The experimental fracture surfaces were also observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Significant weakening of fiber-matrix interface and matrix softening were major factors affecting the strength and modulus reduction at high temperature.

    Abstract: Brain metastases (BM) are common in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and the prognosis is poor with few therapeutic options. This study evaluated the efficacy of three epidermal growth factor receptor–tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) in preventing and treating BM in patients with EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC. Methods: Patients with EGFR mutation-positive advanced NSCLC who visited a tertiary referral center from 1 December 2013 to 30 November 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. They received gefitinib, erlotinib, or afatinib until disease progression, death, or intolerable adverse events. The cumulative incidence of subsequent BM of initial non-BM patients, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) of the BM and non-BM patients were estimated and compared using the Kaplan–Meier and log-rank tests. Results: 306 NSCLC patients were enrolled, with 116, 75, and 115 receiving first-line gefitinib, erlotinib, and afatinib, respectively. The afatinib group had a better PFS [12.7 versus 9.8 months; hazard ratio (HR) 0.59, p  = 0.001] and OS (39.1 versus 22.0 months; HR 0.64, p  = 0.035) than the gefitinib group. Afatinib tended to provide better BM prevention than gefitinib (BM cumulative incidence, HR 0.49; 95% confidence interval 0.34–0.71, p  〈  0.001) according to a Cox model adjusted for possible confounders. Patients with initial BM had a shorter PFS ( p  〈  0.001) and OS ( p  = 0.015) than those without initial BM. Among the former, there were no differences in median PFS ( p  = 0.34) and median OS ( p  = 0.46) in the three EGFR-TKI groups. Conclusions: Our data suggested that, compared with gefitinib, afatinib provided better benefits significantly in terms of PFS and OS. Both had the same effectiveness in preventing subsequent BM.

    Abstract: It is well documented that enhanced garlic (Allium sativum) consumption leads to decrease in the cancer incidences. Diallyl sulfide (DAS), one of the components of garlic, induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis in many cancer cell lines. The present studies are focused on the in vivo effects of DAS on leukemia WEHI-3 cells in the BALB/c mice. We examined the effects of DAS on the cytotoxicity of WEHI-3 cells and results indicated that DAS decreased the percentage of viable WEHI-3 cells and these effects are dose-dependent. We examined the effects of DAS on WEHI-3 in vivo and the results indicated that DAS decreased the percentage of Mac-3 and CD11b, indicating that the differentiation of the precursor of macrophage cells was inhibited. DAS stimulated the percentage of CD3 and CD19, indicating that the differentiation of the precursor of T and B cells promoted. The weights of liver and spleen indicated that DAS decreased the weight of these organs after being compared to the control groups. One of the major characteristic of WEHI-3 leukemia is the enlarged spleen in murine after intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of WEHI-3 cells. In conclusion, DAS affects WEHI-3 cells both in vitro and in vivo.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of targeting peptides chemotherapy to overcome adverse event in the conventional chemotherapy for human hepatocellular carcinoma. Previously we reported several cancer-targeting peptides that bind specifically to cancer cells and their vascular endothelia: L-peptide (anti-cancer cell membrane), RLLDTNRPLLPY; SP-94-peptide (anti-hepatoma cell membrane), SFSHHTPILP; PC5-52-peptide (anti-tumor endothelia), SVSVGMKPSPRP; and control peptide, RLLDTNRGGGGG. In this study, these peptides were linked to liposomal iron oxide nanoparticles to localize the targeted tumor cells and endothelia, and to dextran-coated liposomal doxorubicin (L-D) to treat nonobese diabetic severe combined immunodeficient mice bearing hepatoma xenografts. Our results showed that L-peptide-linked liposomal doxorubicin could inhibit tumor growth with very mild adverse events. Use of the control peptide led to a decrease in the xenograft size but also led to marked apoptotic change in the visceral organ. In conclusion, L-peptide-linked liposomal doxorubicin, SP-94-peptide, and PC5-52-peptide can be used for the treatment of hepatoma xenografts in nonobese diabetic severe combined immunodeficient mice with minimal adverse events.

    Abstract: To evaluate the relationship between alanine transaminase (ALT) level and biphasic insulin secretion (BPIS) in healthy elderly Han Chinese individuals. Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled healthy elderly participants aged ≥60 years that were part of a health examination programme. In order to explore the correlation and severity of the clinical condition, those with any possible confounding factors known to affect insulin secretion or liver function were excluded from the study. BPIS was calculated using an equation developed previously by this research team. Results This study enrolled 39 845 healthy elderly individuals (19 058 males and 20 787 females). Participants were stratified into four quartile groups according to their ALT level. In both males and females, the increasing ALT quartiles (ordinal variable) were associated with greater values of log-transformed first-phase insulin secretion (FPIS) and second-phase insulin secretion (SPIS). The correlation and the linear regression model showed that increasing ALT level was significantly correlated with higher log-transformed FPIS and SPIS. Conclusions ALT was positively correlated with BPIS in a healthy elderly population in both men and women. Elevated ALT may serve as an indicating factor for developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus in healthy elderly individuals.

    Abstract: Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is a premalignant condition with increased incidence worldwide both in old and young individuals. However, the role of certain potential risk factors remains unclear in young adults ( 〈 50 years). We aimed to determine the risk factors of BE in young adults. Methods: A total of 4943 young adults who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at our health check-up center were enrolled. The diagnosis of BE was based on histological confirmation. We analyzed demographic factors, laboratory data, potential risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, presence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, and metabolic syndrome for the risk of BE by using binary logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of BE was 1.8% (88/4943). Male sex, the presence of GERD symptoms, and smoking were three significant risk factors related to BE. Furthermore, participants who had smoked for 10 pack-years or more had increased risk of BE with dose-dependent phenomenon ( p trend 〈 0.001). The proportion of BE in male participants with both GERD symptoms and a smoking history of 10 pack-years or more was as high as 10.3% (16/155). Conclusions: Significant risk factors of BE in young adults are male sex, the presence of GERD symptoms, and smoking. The risk also increases with an increase in cumulative exposure to smoking.

    Abstract: The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between the validity of postural movement and bilateral motor integration in terms of sensory integration theory. Participants in this study were 61 Chinese children ages 48 to 70 months. Structural equation modeling was applied to assess the relation between measures tapping postural movement and bilateral motor integration: for postural movement, the measures involve the Monkey Task, Side-Sit Co-contraction, Prone on Elbows, Wheelbarrow Walk, Airplane, and Scooter Board Co-contraction from the DeGangi-Berk Test of Sensory Integration, and Standing Balance with Eyes Closed / Opened in Southern California Sensory Integration Tests. For bilateral motor integration, the measures chosen were the Rolling Pin Activity, Jump and Turn, Diadokokinesis, Drumming, and Upper Extremity Control from the DeGangi-Berk Test of Sensory Integration, and Cross the Midline in Southern California Sensory Integration Tests (SCSIT). Postural movement was highly correlated with the bilateral motor integration. The factor structure fit the theoretical conceptualization, classifying postural movement and bilateral motor integration together in the same category. Therapists could combine two separate objectives (postural movement and bilateral motor integration) of intervention in an activity to improve the adaptive skills based on the vestibular-proprioceptive integration.

    Abstract: Disease severity may change in the first week after acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) onset. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the reclassification of disease severity after 48 h (i.e. day 3) of ARDS onset could help in predicting mortality and determine factors associated with ARDS persistence and mortality. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of a 3-year prospective, observational cohort study of ARDS in a tertiary care referral center. Disease severity was reclassified after 48 h of enrollment, and cases that still fulfilled the Berlin criteria were regarded as nonresolving ARDS. Results: A total of 1034 ARDS patients were analyzed. Overall hospital mortality was 57.7% (56.7%, 57.5%, and 58.6% for patients with initial mild, moderate, and severe ARDS, respectively, p = 0.189). On day 3 reclassification, the hospital mortality rates were as follows: resolved (42.1%), mild (47.9%), moderate (62.4%), and severe ARDS (76.1%) ( p  〈  0.001). Patients with improving severity on day 3 had lower mortality (48.8%), whereas patients with the same or worsening severity on day 3 had higher mortality (62.7% and 76.3%, respectively). Patients who were older, had lower PaO 2 /FiO 2 , or higher positive end-expiratory pressure on day 1 were significantly associated with nonresolving ARDS on day 3. A Cox regression model with ARDS severity as a time-dependent covariate and competing risk analysis demonstrated that ARDS severity was independently associated with hospital mortality, and nonresolving ARDS had significantly increased hazard of death than resolved ARDS ( p  〈  0.0001). Cumulative mortality curve for ARDS severity comparisons demonstrated significantly different (overall comparison, p  〈  0.001). Conclusions: Reclassification of disease severity after 48 h of ARDS onset could help to divide patients into subgroups with greater separation in terms of mortality.     Abstract: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic skeletal disease in the elderly. There is no effective therapy to reverse disease severity and knee OA (KOA) progression, particularly at the late stage. This study aims to examine the effect of peripheral blood-derived mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) on pain and motor function rescue in patients with Kellgren–Lawrence (KL) grade II to IV KOA. Participants received one intra-articular (IA) injection of autologous PBMNCs. The mononuclear cells were isolated from peripheral blood, enriched by a specialized medium (MoFi medium), and separated by Ficoll-Paque solution. The isolated and enriched PBMNCs could differentiate into M1 and M2 macrophages in vitro. The in vivo anti-inflammatory effect of the PBMNCs was similar to that of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, evaluated by complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced arthritis in rodents. A single-arm and open-label pilot study showed that patients’ knee pain and motor dysfunction were significantly attenuated after the cell transplantation, assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) and Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) at 6 and 12 months post-treatment. Notably, the therapeutic effect of the PBMNCs treatment can be stably maintained for 24 months, as revealed by the KOOS scores. These preclinical and pilot clinical data suggest that IA injection of MoFi-PBMNCs might serve as a novel medical technology to control the pain and the progress of KOA.

    Abstract: A micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) and a nano-MOUDI were used to measure the atmospheric coarse (PM 2.5- 10 ), fine (PM 2.5 ), ultrafine (PM 0.056 - 1 ) and nano ( 〈 0.056 μm) particle concentrations and size distributions at a traffic sampling site in winter in central Taiwan, from November 2004 to January 2005. Concentrations of metallic elements (Fe, Mg, Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu) and major ion (SO 2 - 4 ; NO - 3 ; NH + 4 ) in particles of various sizes (nano, ultrafine, fine and coarse) were measured. Ambient air particulates generally exhibited a bimodal size distribution in the range 0.056-10 mm. The results show that the concentrations followed the order, Fe-Mg-Cr-Zn-Pb-Cu in PM 10 , fine, ultrafine and nano-sized particles. Moreover, the data showed that the average metallic elements Fe and Zn have similar concentration distributions: the concentration decreased as the particle size fell in the nano size range.
