Abstract: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the value of plasma endostatin for predicting 30-day mortality of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). Methods Patients who underwent non-cardiac major surgery and developed AKI in the first 48 hours after admission to the intensive care unit were consecutively included. Concentrations of plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (Cys C), and endostatin were measured at three time points: 0, 24, and 48 hours after the AKI diagnosis. Clinical patient characteristics were recorded after AKI was diagnosed. Results A total of 256 new-onset AKI patients were enrolled. Of these, 48 (18.7%) patients died within 30 days. The difference in plasma endostatin values between 0 and 24 hours (ΔEndostatin-24h) yielded the best area under the curve (AUC) of 0.747 for predicting 30-day mortality in AKI patients; NGAL and Cys C achieved AUC of 0.672 and 0.647, respectively. The predictive AUC increased to 0.833 when ΔEndostatin-24h was combined with sequential organ failure assessment score and AKI classification. Conclusion Dynamic plasma endostatin is useful for predicting 30-day mortality in AKI patients. The predictive power of dynamic plasma endostatin can be significantly improved when it is combined with clinical patient data.

Abstract: This study uses coir from agricultural waste, electromagnetic shielding carbon fiber, impact-resistant polypropylene (PP), and methylmaleic anhydride- grafted PP (MA- g-PP) to make wood plastic composites (WPCs). According to the experimental results, when coir and carbon fiber are at a ratio of 3:12, the resulting WPC exhibits an maximum electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) of −25 dB, which reaches the protective grade of staple merchandise. At fibers ratio of 3:12, the tensile strength is improved by 10% more than at ratio of 15:0; and the increased flexural strength is by 20% accordingly. A multiblending process is used to simulate the recycling and explores its thermodestruction of the resulting WPC. With a ratio of 3:12, the WPC still has an EMSE of −25 dB at nine cycles of multiblending; however, its tensile and flexural strengths both decrease by 10%.

Abstract: Corneal tissue engineering has developed rapidly in recent years, with a large number of publications emerging worldwide. This study focused on exploring the global status and research trends in this field. Publications related to corneal tissue engineering from 1991 to 2021 were acquired from the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-Expanded) of Web of Science (WoS). Firstly, the VOS viewer software was chosen for visualizing bibliometric networks, including bibliographic coupling analysis, co-citation analysis, co-authorship analysis, and co-occurrence analysis, and the CiteSpace software was used to detect burst keywords. Subsequently, the publication trends in corneal tissue engineering research were also predicted. In present study, 953 publications were selected and analyzed. The number of annual publications was increasing globally and was predicted to continue the current trend. While Japan ranked top 1 in terms of average citation, the USA contributed the most to the corneal tissue engineering research with highest number of citations and highest H-index. The journal of Biomaterials contributed the largest publication number. The top-ranked institutions were National University of Singapore and Singapore National Eye Center. Additionally, researches could be manually divided into four clusters: “biomaterial related research,” “cell related research,” “transplantation therapy,” and “mechanism research on biomaterials.” Specifically, the research topic “hydrogel” was predicted to be hotspots which may help researchers to explore new directions for future research.

Abstract: Pleural fluid (PF) carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a widely used diagnostic marker for malignant pleural effusion (MPE). Recent studies revealed that PF to serum CEA was also a promising diagnostic parameter for MPE. Objective: We aimed to investigate whether PF to serum CEA ratio and delta CEA (PF minus serum CEA) provided added value to PF CEA in diagnosing MPE. Methods: Patients with pleural effusion in a retrospective cohort (BUFF) and a prospective cohort (SIMPLE) were included. The clinical characteristics of the patients were extracted from their medical records. The diagnostic value of CEA ratio and delta CEA was estimated by a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, net reclassification improvement (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Results: A total of 148 patients in the BUFF cohort and 164 patients in the SIMPLE cohort were enrolled. The BUFF cohort had 46 MPE patients and 102 benign pleural effusion (BPE) patients, and the SIMPLE cohort had 85 MPE patients and 79 BPE patients. In both cohorts, MPE patients had significantly higher PF CEA, serum CEA, CEA ratio, and delta CEA. The area under ROC curves (AUCs) of PF CEA, CEA ratio, and delta CEA were 0.78 (95% CI: 0.67–0.88), 0.80 (95% CI: 0.72–0.89) and 0.83 (95% CI: 0.75–0.91) in the BUFF cohort, and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.83–0.94), 0.86 (95% CI: 0.80–0.92), and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.78–0.91) in the SIMPLE cohort. The differences between the AUCs of PF CEA, CEA ratio, and delta CEA did not reach statistical significance. The continuous NRI and IDI of CEA ratio and delta CEA were 〈 0. Conclusion: CEA ratio and delta value cannot provide added diagnostic value to PF CEA. The simultaneous determination of serum and PF CEA should not be adopted in clinical practice.

    Abstract: To evaluate the neglect of left-behind children (LBC) in China. Method: Participants: Children separated from one or both parents for at least 6 months. Intervention: Trauma of separation. Comparison: Non-left-behind children (NLBC). Outcomes: Neglect rates and severity. Only case–control studies were included. Results: Thirteen studies were included; there were 18,688 LBC in a large sample ( N = 42,003) of children aged 0–18 years in China. The overall neglect rate was significantly higher in LBC compared to NLBC (odds ratio [ OR] = 1.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.50, 1.67], p 〈 .01) based on the Chinese Rural Child Neglected Evaluation Model (CRCNEM) and the Parents–Child Conflict Tactics Scales ( OR = 1.44, 95% CI [1.35, 1.54], p 〈 .01). The overall neglect severity in LBC was also significantly higher than NLBC ( SMD = 0.31, 95% CI [0.28, 0.33], p 〈 .01). The same trends were observed in sex subgroups. With regard to subtypes, LBC were significantly more likely to have emotional neglect ( OR = 2.29, 95% CI [1.88, 2.78], p 〈 .01), medical neglect ( OR = 1.79, 95% CI [1.62, 1.98], p 〈 .01), physical neglect ( OR = 1.75, 95% CI [1.60, 1.91], p 〈 .01), security neglect ( OR = 1.52, 95% CI [1.32, 1.75], p 〈 .01), educational neglect ( OR = 1.50, 95% CI [1.31, 1.72], p 〈 .01), and social neglect ( OR = 1.33, 95% CI [1.18, 1.51], p 〈 .01). Furthermore, LBC had significantly higher severity in medical neglect ( SMD = 0.31, 95% CI [0.27, 0.35], p 〈 .01), emotional neglect ( SMD = 0.28, 95% CI [0.24, 0.32], p 〈 .01), physical neglect ( SMD = 0.24, 95% CI [0.18, 0.29], p 〈 .01), security neglect ( SMD = 0.26, 95% CI [0.23, 0.29], p 〈 .01), educational neglect ( SMD = 0.25, 95% CI [0.20, 0.31], p 〈 .01), and social neglect ( SMD = 0.25, 95% CI [0.10, 0.40], p 〈 .01). Conclusion: The neglect rates and severity in LBC in China were both significantly higher than those in NLBC. There was a strong association between neglect and LBC. Public policy changes are urgently needed to improve the dire situation and the well-being of the LBC.

Abstract: Asthma–chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap (ACO) is poorly recognized in China. Our study determined the distribution of ACO and its clinical characteristics among patients (aged ⩾40 years) with airflow limitation at Chinese tertiary hospitals. Methods: This cross-sectional, non-interventional study (NCT02600221), conducted between December 2015 and October 2016 in 20 Tier-3 Chinese hospitals, included patients aged ⩾40 years with post-bronchodilator (BD) FEV 1 /FVC 〈 0.7. The primary variable was distribution of ACO in adults with post-BD forced expiratory volume /forced vital capacity (FEV 1 /FVC) 〈 0.7 based on Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2015 and 2017 reports. Other variables included determination of characteristics of ACO and its clinical recognition rate. Results: In 2003 patients (mean age 62.30 ± 9.86 years), distribution of ACO, COPD and asthma were 37.40%, 48.50% and 14.10%, respectively. Proportions of patients with A, B, C and D grouping were 11.70%, 31.00%, 6.90% and 50.30% as per GOLD 2017, whereas they were 15.10%, 51.10%, 3.60% and 30.20% as per GOLD 2015. Similar clinical symptoms were reported in all three groups. A higher percentage of ACO patients presented with dyspnea, wheezing and chest tightness. Compared with the COPD group, a greater proportion of ACO patients reported wheezing (74.6% and 65.40%), while a lower proportion in the ACO group reported cough (79.40% versus 82.70%) and expectoration (76.50% versus 81.60%). Blood eosinophil count ⩾0.3 × 10 9 /L was observed in 34.6% of ACO patients. The clinical recognition rate of ACO was 31.4%. Conclusion: Despite ACO affecting two-fifths of the study population, the initial diagnosis rate was low at 6% in China, thus warranting concerted efforts to improve ACO diagnosis. Abstract: Titanium (Ti) and Ti alloys are widely used biomaterials, but they lack osteogenic capability for rapid bone integration. To improve osseointegration of Ti implants, TiO 2 nanotubes were prepared using the anodizing oxidation technique, and strontium (Sr) combined with icariin (ICA) was loaded on TiO 2 nanotube coatings. Cell adhesion and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineralization of extracellular matrix, and bone formation around titanium implants in ovariectomized rats, were examined separately. The results showed that compared with pure Ti, TiO 2 and Sr-loaded TiO 2 coatings, the coatings loaded with both Sr and ICA showed better effect on cell adhesion and proliferation, higher ALP activity and more red-stained mineralized nodules. Furthermore, more bone was formed around implants loaded with both Sr and ICA in osteoporotic rats. Therefore, coating with Sr and ICA is valuable for clinical application to strengthen the osseointegration of titanium implants, especially in osteoporotic patients.

Abstract: The capacity of charge storage for supercapacitor depends on the size of the electrode surface area and the active material on the electrodes. In this article, we fabricate the three-dimensional microelectrodes with SU-8 photoresist based on the microelectromechanical system technology to increase the electrode surface area and to carry more active materials on the electrodes. The three-dimensional microelectrode was directly prepared by the method of anodic electrodeposition. Its surface and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge current are also used to test the electrochemical characteristics of the manganese oxide electrodes. When the discharge density is 0.5 mA cm −2 , the areal capacitance for the fabricated three-dimensional microelectrodes with microstructure and the two-dimensional planar microelectrodes without microstructure is 3.68 mF cm −2 and 1.0 mF cm −2 , respectively. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional microelectrode structure prepared with microelectromechanical system technology can effectively increase the electrode surface area and carry more electroactive materials, thereby enhancing the charge storage capacity of the electrodes.

Abstract: BRCA2 plays a key role in homologous recombination. However, information regarding its mutations in Chinese patients with breast cancer remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the clinicopathological characteristics of BRCA2 mutation breast cancer and explore the mutation’s effect on hormone receptor (HR)-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer survival in China. Design: This hospital-based cohort study prospectively included 629 women with breast cancer diagnosed from 2008 to 2023 at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital in China. Methods: We compared the clinicopathological characteristics and metastatic patterns and analysed the invasive disease-free survival (iDFS), distant relapse-free survival (DRFS) and first-line progression-free survival (PFS1) of patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer according to BRCA2 mutations. Results: Among the 629 patients, 78 had BRCA2 mutations (12.4%) and 551 did not (87.6%). The mean age at diagnosis was lower in the BRCA2 mutation breast cancer group than in the non-mutation breast cancer group (38.91 versus 41.94 years, p = 0.016). BRCA2 mutation breast cancers were more likely to be lymph node-positive than non-mutation breast cancers (73.0% versus 56.6%, p = 0.037). The pathological grade was higher in 47.1% of BRCA2 mutation breast cancers than in 29.6% of non-mutation breast cancers ( p = 0.014). The proportions of patients with BRCA2 mutations who developed contralateral breast cancer (19.2% versus 8.8%, p = 0.004), breast cancer in the family (53.8% versus 38.3%, p = 0.009) and ovarian cancer in the family (7.6% versus 2.4%, p = 0.022) were higher than those of patients without the mutation. The median follow-up time was 92.78 months. Multivariate analysis showed that BRCA2 mutation was not associated with poorer iDFS [hazard ratio = 0.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.64–1.27, p = 0.56] and poorer distant relapse-free survival (DRFS) (hazard ratio = 1.09, 95% CI = 0.61–1.93, p = 0.76). There was no significant difference between the two groups with regard to metastatic patterns in the advanced disease setting. In the first-line metastatic breast cancer setting, PFS1 expression was broadly similar between the two groups irrespective of chemotherapy or endocrine therapy. Conclusion: HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer with BRCA2 mutations differs from those without mutations in clinical behaviour and reflects more aggressive tumour behaviour. Our results indicate that BRCA2 mutations have no significant effect on the survival of Chinese women with HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer.

Abstract: Compression therapy with the use of graduated compression stockings (GCSs) is a common treatment strategy for chronic venous disease (CVD). However, there is no uniform and objective standard to assess adherence to the use of GCSs. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a GCS Compliance Scale (GCSAS) to fill gaps in internationally recognized comprehensive scales and provide a useful tool for future research. Methods The items included in the GCSAS were based on a review of the literature and open-ended interviews with experts, who screened the initial items using an item-level content validity index. Then, pilot tests were conducted three times with 50 participants. After exclusion of redundant and cross-loading items by exploratory factor analysis, 290 subjects were recruited to evaluate the reliability and validity of the proposed GCSAS. Analyses included internal consistency, test–retest reliability, split-half reliability, construct validity, criterion validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Results The final GCSAS consisted of 17 items and 5 dimensions. The results of the exploratory factor analysis indicated that the variances of each factor explained were 22.03%, 14.85%, 14.74%, 14.16%, and 13.35%, and all 5 factors explained 79.13% of the variance among the 17 items. The factor loadings of all items were 〉 0.7. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the indices were adequate. A significant positive correlation was found between the GCSAS and the Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study - Quality of Life questionnaire scores (r = 0.76, p 〈 0.001). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.90, test–retest reliability was 0.81, and split-half reliability was 0.92. Conclusions The GCSAS showed good validity and reliability to assess compliance with the use of GCSs among patients with CVD.
