    Abstract: ADHD and developmental dyslexia (DD) frequently co-occur. However, it is unclear why some children with ADHD acquire DD while others do not. Methods: A total of 830 children (including typically developing controls, ADHD only, DD only, and ADHD + DD groups) of two ages (younger: first–third grade; older: fourth–sixth grade) were assessed on measures of reading ability and reading-related skills. Results: The clinical groups had different degrees of impairment in each reading-related skill. Regression results found that the four groups had different skills in predicting reading ability in younger and older grades. Especially, rapid automatized naming (RAN) was the only predictor of reading ability in children with ADHD only. Conclusions: The study highlights that RAN plays an important role in the reading development of children with ADHD only, reflecting the possible protective role of RAN in reading development.

    Abstract: A retrospective cohort study. Objective: To investigate the factors contributing to the development of postoperative distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion (PSF) with lowest instrumented vertebrae (LIV) at or above L1. Methods: Patients with Lenke type 1 or 2 curves who underwent PSF with LIV at or above L1 with a minimum follow-up of 2 years were evaluated. The primary outcome measure was the occurrence of postoperative DJK. Radiographic parameters of sagittal alignment and inclusion/exclusion of sagittal stable vertebra (SSV) in PSF were analyzed to determine their associations with the occurrence of postoperative DJK. Results: Overall, 122 patients (mean age: 15.1 ± 3.2 years) were included. The overall incidence of postoperative DJK was 6.6%. DJK was observed in 19.0% (8/42) of patients whose SSV was not included in PSF and not in patients with SSV included in PSF (n = 80). In the SSV-excluded group, univariate analysis found two significant risk factors for DJK: postoperative thoracic kyphosis (TK, T5-12) and postoperative thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK, T11-L2). The ROC curve revealed that postoperative TK ≥ 25° and TLK ≥ 10° best predicted the occurrence of postoperative DJK in the SSV-excluded group. The incidence was significantly higher in cases with postoperative TK ≥ 25° or TLK ≥ 10° (7/13 = 53.8%) than in those with postoperative TK 〈 25° and TLK 〈 10° (1/29 = 3.4%). Conclusions: The current study revealed that postoperative TK ≥ 25° or postoperative TLK ≥ 10° with SSV excluded from PSF were related to DJK after PSF for Lenke type 1 and type 2 AIS. When the SSV is intended to be spared from PSF to save more motion segments, TK and TLK should be carefully evaluated and attained in a lesser magnitude (TK 〈 25°, TLK 〈 10°) after surgery.

    Abstract: Customer profiles that include gender and age information are important to businesses and can be used to promote sales and provide personalized services. This information is gathered in e-commerce by analyzing customer visit records in virtual web space. However, such practice is difficult in brick-and-mortar businesses because the data that can be utilized to infer customer profiles are limited in physical spaces. In this paper, we attempt to infer the gender and age of customers using indoor positioning data generated by the Wi-Fi engine. To achieve this, we first construct a synthesized features vector to distinguish different profiles. This vector contains both customer spatial–temporal mobility characteristics and interest preferences. A hidden Markov model group detection method is then applied to detect customers who shop together because they usually show the same shopping behavior and it is difficult to distinguish their profiles. Finally, a random forest inference model is proposed to infer profiles of customers who shop alone. The indoor positioning data collected in the Longhu Tianjie Plaza in Chongqing were used as a case study. The result shows that customer profiles are indeed inferable from indoor positioning data. The accuracy of the gender inference model reaches 73.9%, while that of the age inference model is 67.9%. This demonstrates the potential value of new “big data” for promoting precision marketing and customer management in brick-and-mortar businesses.

    Abstract: Polypeptides extracted from animal immune organs have been proved to exert immunomodulatory activities in previous reports. However, relative experimental data regarding the influence of a polypeptide mixture extracted from healthy calf spleen (lienal polypeptide [LP]) on the immune function in tumor therapy are limited, and the components in LP remain unclear. In the present study, the immune regulatory effect of LP was investigated in normal mice and Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC)-bearing mice treated with cyclophosphamide (CTX). The components of LP were identified by liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization-coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) analysis and bioinformatic analysis. In LLC-bearing mice, LP showed a synergic antitumor effect with CTX, whereas LP alone did not present direct antitumor activity. Further, LP was found to enhance immune organ indexes, splenocyte number, and T lymphocyte subsets in normal mice and LLC-bearing mice treated with CTX. The decline of white blood cell and platelet counts, splenocyte proliferation activity, and peritoneal macrophage phagocytic function caused by CTX were also significantly suppressed by LP treatment in LLC-bearing mice. Notably, LP treatment significantly decreased the expression of phagocytosis-related proteins including CD47/signal regulatory protein α/Src homology phosphatase-1 in the tumor tissue of LLC-bearing mice treated with CTX. LC-MS/MS-based peptidomics unraveled the main polypeptides in LP with a length from 8 to 25 amino acids. Bioinformatics analysis further confirmed the possibility of LP to regulate immunity, especially in phagocytosis-related pathway. Our above findings indicated that LP can relieve the immunosuppression induced by chemotherapy and is a beneficial supplement in cancer therapy. Impact statement The immunomodulatory activities of polypeptides extracted from animal immune organs have incurred people’s interests since a long time ago. In this study, we investigated the immune regulation effects of a polypeptide mixture extracted from health calf spleen (lienal polypeptide [LP]) in Lewis lung carcinoma-bearing mice treated with cyclophosphamide (CTX). Liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization-coupled with tandem mass spectrometry-based peptidomics and bioinformatics analysis unraveled the main polypeptides in LP and further confirmed that LP is mainly associated with immune regulating pathway, especially in tumor cell phagocytosis-related pathway. Our study for the first time revealed that polypeptides from spleen can relieve the immunosuppression induced by CTX and is a beneficial supplement in cancer therapy.

    Abstract: Background: Monitoring of vancomycin using the area under the curve (AUC) to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio is now preferred for serious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections. Vancomycin AUC/MIC monitoring is being investigated but is not yet well elucidated with other bacterial pathogens. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted assessing patients with streptococcal bacteremia treated with vancomycin definitive therapy. AUC was calculated using a Bayesian approach, and classification and regression tree analysis was used to identify a vancomycin AUC threshold predictive of clinical failure. Results: Eleven patients had a vancomycin AUC  〈  329 of which 8 (73%) experienced clinical failure, while 35 patients had a vancomycin AUC ≥ 329 of which 12 (34%) experienced clinical failure ( P = .04). Hospital length of stay was longer in the AUC ≥ 329 group (15 vs 8 days, P = .05), whereas time to bacteremia clearance (29 [22-45] vs 25 [20-29]  hours, P = .15) and toxicity incidence (13% vs 4%, P = 1) were similar between groups. Conclusions: This study identified a VAN AUC threshold of 〈 329 to be predictive of clinical failure in patients with streptococcal bacteremia which should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating. Studies evaluating VAN AUC-based monitoring for streptococcal bloodstream infections along with other infection types are needed before implementation into clinical practice can be recommended.

    Abstract: The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to assess the efficacy of a family-based (FB) weight-loss and behavior-modification intervention among overweight/obese children (age 9–11 years) and their parents in Taiwan. The intervention group (52 child–parent dyads) participated in an FB program for 7 weeks. The control group (55 child–parent dyads) received an educational pamphlet about obesity prevention. The children’s body mass index (BMI) z-scores were the primary outcome variable. The parents’ BMI, high-calorie (HC) food-intake behaviors, screen-related behaviors, and restrictions on children’s consumption of HC foods and screen-related behaviors and the availability of HC foods at home were the secondary outcome variables. Outcome variables were measured at baseline (T0), at the end of the intervention (T1), and 4 weeks after the end of the intervention (T2). A linear mixed model was used to assess the efficacy of the FB program. Results indicated that the children’s BMI z-scores decreased significantly more from T0 to T2 in the experimental group than in the control group. The decreases in parents’ HC food-intake behaviors and availability of HC foods at home and the increase in parental restrictions on children’s consumption of HC foods were significantly greater in the experimental than in the control group from T0 to T1 and T0 to T2. The FB program was effective in modifying parental behaviors and the weight of overweight/obese children in a Taiwanese population.

    Abstract: Management of patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy is complicated by a very high rate of adverse drug reactions which is even more challenging in developing countries like Ethiopia where the toxicity profile of chemotherapy is lacking. The present study aimed at evaluating the toxicity profile of Doxorubicin-Cyclophosphamide (AC) and Doxorubicin-Cyclophosphamide→Paclitaxel (AC→T) regimens among 146 patients with breast cancer in Ethiopia. Methods This prospective cohort study, with the median of six months’ follow-up, was conducted from January 1 to September 30, 2017 GC at the only nationwide oncology center, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Seventy-one patients received AC, while 75 received AC-T regimen. The toxicity with the highest grade during any cycle was considered as the toxicity grade for that patient. SPSS version 22 was used for analysis. Results The overall frequent non-hematological adverse drug reactions reported for both regimens were fatigue 144 (98.7%), dysgeusia 142 (97.3%), skin hyperpigmentation 141 (96.6%), nausea 136 (93.2%), vomiting 129 (88.4%), gastritis 122 (83.6%), peripheral neuropathy 108 (74%), and myalgia/arthralgia 110 (75.3%). Neutropenia 107 (73.3%), leukopenia 102 (69.9%), and anemia 51 (34.9%) were the most frequent overall grade hematological toxicities reported. However, those received AC regimen suffered more from grade 2 and above leukopenia (35.2% vs. 17.3%, P = 0.014), anemia (16.9% vs. 2.7%, P = 0.004), and alkaline phosphatase increment (11.3% vs. 2.7%, P = 0.039) than AC-T regimen. On the contrary, those received AC-T regimen suffered more from severe arthralgia/myalgia (2.8% vs. 2%, P = 0.001), peripheral neuropathy (1.4% vs. 36%, P = 0.000), and gastritis (14.1% vs. 29.3%, P = 0.026) than AC regimen. Pretreatment blood cell counts, having stage IV breast tumor, older age, and lower body surface area were significant predictors of grade 2 to above hematological toxicities. Older age, arthralgia/myalgia, and skin hyperpigmentation occurred during the cohort were significant predictors of grade 2 to above oral mucositis, peripheral neuropathy, and fatigue, respectively. Conclusion Patients who received the AC regimen suffered more from hematological abnormalities, while those on the AC-T regimen experienced more of non-hematological toxicities. Overall, we report high incidences of AC and AC-T regimens-induced toxicities in Ethiopian women with breast cancer, and they may require prior support based on pretreatment blood counts, age and body surface area, and close follow-up during chemotherapy.

    Abstract: Clinical sepsis-associated biomarkers were utilized in a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) septic mouse model to provide a reference for investigating pathophysiological mechanisms and evaluating novel therapeutic interventions for sepsis. Methods Sepsis in mice was induced by CLP, and clinical biomarkers were evaluated (survival rate, blood physiological and biochemical indices, cytokines, hepatorenal function parameters, and blood coagulation). Results The mortality rate was 〉 70%. The body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate decreased within 48 h. Low lactic acid was found at 8 h. The CLP mice showed typical inflammatory symptoms with decreased white blood cells and procalcitonin and increased levels of soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, MIP-1β, and MIP-2. The platelet count and activated partial thromboplastin time significantly decreased, and the prothrombin time and prothrombin time–international normalized ratio markedly increased. Phenotypes of multiple organ dysfunction were found in the CLP model, including increased liver alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase; significantly reduced total protein, globulin, and serum albumin; increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine; and decreased blood glucose. Conclusion The clinical features of the CLP mouse model were similar to those of human patients with sepsis.

    Abstract: Seizures are a common symptom of craniocerebral diseases, and epilepsy is one of the comorbidities of craniocerebral diseases. However, how to rationally use anti-seizure medications (ASMs) in the perioperative period of craniocerebral surgery to control or avoid seizures and reduce their associated harm is a problem. The China Association Against Epilepsy (CAAE) united with the Trauma Group of the Chinese Neurosurgery Society, Glioma Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Neuro-Oncology Branch of the Chinese Neuroscience Society, and Neurotraumatic Group of Chinese Trauma Society, and selected experts for consultancy regarding outcomes from evidence-based medicine in domestic and foreign literature. These experts referred to the existing research evidence, drug characteristics, Chinese FDA-approved indications, and expert experience, and finished the current guideline on the application of ASMs during the perioperative period of craniocerebral surgery, aiming to guide relevant clinical practice. This guideline consists of six sections: application scope of guideline, concepts of craniocerebral surgery-related seizures and epilepsy, postoperative application of ASMs in patients without seizures before surgery, application of ASMs in patients with seizures associated with lesions before surgery, emergency treatment of postoperative seizures, and 16 recommendations.

    Abstract: The present study investigated the association between the presence of periodontitis and aortic calcification (AC) risk among Chinese adults. A total of 6059 individuals who underwent regular health check-ups and received a diagnosis of periodontitis between 2009 and 2016 were included. The outcome was AC, assessed by a chest low-dose spiral CT scan. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to assess the association between periodontitis and AC risk after adjusting for several confounders. After a median follow-up period of 2.3 years (interquartile range: 1.03–4.97 years), 843 cases of AC were identified, with 532 (12.13%) and 311 (18.59%) patients in the non-periodontitis group and periodontitis group, respectively. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that, compared with those without periodontitis, the hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval for AC risk in participants with periodontitis was 1.18 (1.02–1.36) ( P = .025) in the fully adjusted model. Stratified analyses showed that the positive relationship between periodontitis and AC was more evident in males and participants 〈 65 years of age (p interaction = .005 and .004, respectively). Our results show that the presence of periodontitis was positively associated with AC among Chinese adults, especially among males and younger participants.
