    Abstract: This study is intended to develop long period fibre grating sensors for potential applications in environmental and durability monitoring of coastal structures. High-quality helical long period fibre gratings (HLPFGs) are inscribed in different types of small-core single mode fibre (SMF) by use of hydrogen-oxygen flame heating technique. A detailed investigation of the effect of core diameter on their transmission spectrum and optimum length of the HLPFG has been pursued. A longer length is required to achieve the same coupling attenuation in a smaller-core SMF than that of a larger-core fibre. The strain, torsion and refractive index (RI) properties of the HLPFG is investigated experimentally to develop a high-sensitivity sensor. The experimental results show that the strain sensitivity could be enhanced by means of employing a larger-core diameter SMF. Moreover, the HLFPGs are also sensitive to the torsion and external RI. Hence, such HLFPGs have great potential for sensing applications.

    Abstract: The all-inside arthroscopic Broström-Gould technique gained particular attention among clinicians and researchers due to its high rate of satisfactory results. Thus far, there is a lack of evidence regarding the differences in clinical outcomes between the use of 1 anchor and 2 anchors. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in clinical function and activity levels in patients treated with 1 or 2 anchors in all-inside arthroscopic Broström-Gould surgery for chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). Methods: The data of 75 patients with CLAI (unilateral) admitted from May 2013 to July 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were treated with all-inside arthroscopic Broström-Gould surgery. The patients were divided into a single-anchor group ( n = 36) and double-anchor group ( n = 39) according to the number of anchors used. There was no statistical difference in general characteristics between the 2 groups before surgery. After 36 to 72 months of follow-up, the pain visual analog scale (VAS) score, American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, Karlsson Ankle Functional Score (KAFS), and Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) were used to evaluate and compare the clinical function results between the 2 groups. Results: The incidence of wound complications; reaction to the suture; injury to the nerve, blood vessel, or tendon; and length of postoperative hospitalization were similar between the 2 groups. At the last follow-up, there was no significant difference in the VAS and AOFAS scores between single- and double-anchor groups, but the KAFS and FAOS in the double-anchor group were significantly higher than in the single-anchor group. Additionally, more patients in the double-anchor group returned to preinjury sports activities. Conclusion: All-inside arthroscopic Broström-Gould surgery for the treatment of CLAI yielded a better functional effect and better recovery to preinjury mobility when 2 anchors were used instead of a single anchor.     Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the risk factors for Ocular metastasis (OM) of Gastric cancer (GC). Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. A total of 1165 patients with GC were enrolled in this study and divided into OM and non-ocular metastasis (NOM) groups. Chi-square and independent samples t tests were used to determine whether differences in demographic characteristics and serological indicators (SI) between the two groups were significant. In addition, binary logistic regression was used to analyze the value of various SI as risk factors for OM in patients with GC. The statistical threshold was set as P  〈  .05. Finally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the diagnostic value of various SI in differentiating the occurrence of OM in patients with GC. Results: The incidence of OM in older adults with GC was 1.1%. Adenocarcinoma was the most common type of GC in both groups, and there was no significant difference in demographic characteristics between the groups. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), carbohydrate antigen-724 (CA724), and carcinoembryonic antigen levels were significantly higher in the OM group than the NOM group, while those of apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) were significantly lower in the OM than the NOM group. Binary logistic analysis showed that LDL, ApoA1, and CA724 were independent risk factors for OM in patients with GC ( P  〈  .001, P = .033, and P = .008, respectively). ROC curve analysis generated area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.881, 0.576, and 0.906 for LDL, ApoA1, and CA724, respectively. In addition, combined analysis of LDL, ApoA1, and CA724 generated the highest AUC value of 0.924 ( P  〈  .001). Conclusion: Among SI, LDL, ApoA1, and CA724 have predictive value for the occurrence of OM in GC, with the three factors combined having the highest value.

    Abstract: To investigate the changes of olfactory function and odor-induced brain activation in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at early stages compared with healthy controls. Materials and Methods Olfactory function and odor-induced brain activation in 12 SLE patients at early stages and 12 age, gender and education matched healthy controls were evaluated using olfactory behavior test and odor-induced task-functional magnetic resonance imaging (task-fMRI). Results No significant differences in olfactory behavior scores (including olfactory threshold, olfactory identification, and olfactory memory) were found in the patients with SLE at early stages compared with the healthy controls, while significantly decreased odor-induced activations in olfactory-related brain regions were observed in the patients. In the SLE group, the patients with better performance in the olfactory threshold test had significantly lower levels of anti-dsDNA antibody. Conclusion The current study demonstrated that significant alterations in odor-induced brain activations occurred prior to measurable olfactory decline in SLE at early stages, which provided a new method for early diagnosis of olfactory dysfunction in SLE.

    Abstract: To investigate pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) mRNA and protein levels in condyloma acuminatum, and their relationship with angiogenesis and keratinocyte proliferation. Methods Lesions from male patients with condyloma acuminatum and skin from healthy male (control) subjects were collected. Levels of PEDF protein and its corresponding mRNA (SERPINF1) were determined via Western blotting and reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Immunohistochemical staining for Ki-67 and CD34 was performed to calculate keratinocyte proliferation index (PI) and microvessel density (MVD), respectively. Results Levels of both PEDF protein and SERPINF1 mRNA were significantly lower in lesions from patients with condyloma acuminatum ( n = 30) than in skin from healthy control subjects ( n = 30). There were significant negative correlations between PEDF levels and both PI and MVD. Conclusions The reduction in PEDF levels in condyloma acuminatum was associated with an increase in angiogenesis and cell proliferation. PEDF may be involved in the pathogenesis of condyloma acuminatum.

    Abstract: The organochlorine insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and heavy metal cadmium (Cd) are widespread environmental pollutants. They are persistent in the environment and can accumulate in organisms. Although the individual toxicity of DDT and Cd has been well documented, their combined toxicity is still not clear. Since liver is their common target, in this study, the individual and combined toxicity of DDT and Cd in human liver carcinoma HepG2 and human normal liver THLE-3 cell lines were investigated. The results showed that DDT and Cd inhibited the viability of HepG2 and THLE-3 cells dose-dependently and altered lysosomal morphology and function. Intracellular reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation levels were induced by DDT and Cd treatment. The combined cytotoxicity of DDT and Cd was greater than their individual cytotoxicity, and the interaction between Cd and DDT was additive on the inhibition of cell viability and lysosomal function of HepG2 cells. The interaction was antagonistic on the inhibition of cell viability of THLE-3 cells. These results may facilitate the evaluation of the cumulative risk of pesticides and heavy metal residues in the environment.

    Abstract: Zirconia is the preferred material for dental restorations; however, dental restorations are usually affected by zirconia fractures due to chipping and delamination of the veneer ceramic. One effective solution for repairing chemically inert zirconia frameworks is to strongly chemically bond them with the composite resin via surface modification. Thus, the bonding strength between the zirconia and composite resin determines the performance of dental restoration. Herein, we investigate the shear bond strength between zirconia ceramic and two ceramic repair systems before and after thermal cycling based on different surface pretreatments, including air-abrasion and a novel silane coupling agent. When treated with combined sandblasting, novel silane and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl hydrogen phosphate act as a bonding agent for the zirconia surface, and the maximum shear bond strength achieves 27.5 MPa, as measured by a universal testing machine through the average of 16 separate measurements. The results show that the combined treatment resists the interface damage caused by expansion and contraction during thermal cycling. The long-term bond durability is due to the micro-mechanical bond force formed by resin and ceramic, and the chemical bonds of Zr-O-Si at the interface. Results indicate that selective pretreating the surface results in high bond strength between the zirconia and the composite resin, which is meaningful to optimize dental restoration.

    Abstract: Intermittent hypoxia, a significant feature of obstructive sleep apnea, has pro-tumorigenic effects. Here, we investigated the effect of sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate on oxidative stress and apoptosis in a mouse model of Lewis lung carcinoma with intermittent hypoxia. Methods: Mice were randomly assigned to normoxia (control), normoxia plus sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate (control + sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate), intermittent hypoxia, and intermittent hypoxia + sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate groups. Intermittent hypoxia administration lasted 5 weeks in the intermittent hypoxia groups. Lewis lung carcinoma cells were injected into the right flank of each mouse after 1 week of intermittent hypoxia exposure. Sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate was injected intraperitoneally in the control + sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate and intermittent hypoxia + sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate groups. Tumor oxidative stress was evaluated by detection of malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase. The apoptosis of tumor cells was evaluated by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling assay as well as by Western blot analysis of B-cell lymphoma 2-associated X protein and cleaved caspase-3 expression. Additionally, the expression of hypoxia-induced factor-1α, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, and nuclear factor kappa B was also evaluated by Western blot. Results: Compared with the control group, the intermittent hypoxia treatment significantly increased Lewis lung carcinoma tumor growth and oxidative stress (serum malondialdehyde) but decreased serum levels of SOD and pro-apoptotic markers (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling staining, B-cell lymphoma 2-associated X protein, and cleaved caspase-3). These changes were significantly attenuated by intraperitoneal injection of sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate. Lower nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and higher nuclear factor kappa B levels in the intermittent hypoxia group were clearly reversed by sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate treatment. In addition, sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate administration decreased the high expression of hypoxia-induced factor-1α induced by intermittent hypoxia. Conclusion: Intermittent hypoxia treatment resulted in high oxidative stress and low apoptosis in Lewis lung carcinoma–implanted mice, which could be attenuated by sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate administration possibly through a mechanism mediated by the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/nuclear factor kappa B signaling pathway.

    Abstract: Several new chiral tetrahedral clusters containing the OsCoMoS core were synthesised by the thermal reaction of the precursor [(μ 3 -S)OsCo 2 (CO) 9 ] with the functionally-substituted metal exchange reagents [Mo(CO) 3 (C 5 H 4 )R][(R=CHO, C(O)CH 3 , C(O)C 6 H 4 -1,4-CO 2 Me)]. The structure of cluster [(μ 3 -S)OsCoW(CO) 8 C 5 H 4 C(O)CH 3 ] was established by X-ray single crystal diffraction.

    Abstract: To investigate the clinical value of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) in the assessment of severity and prognosis in acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS). Methods Plasma BNP level, arterial blood gases, serum C-reactive protein level, alveolar–arterial oxygen tension difference and oxygenation index were measured in patients with and without ALI/ARDS within 24 h of admission to an intensive care unit. Patients with ALI/ARDS were divided into mild, moderate or severe groups according to the degree of hypoxaemia. Survival 〉 28 days was recorded. Results A total of 59 patients with ALI/ARDS and 14 patients without ALI/ARDS were included in the study. Of the patients with ALI/ARDS, 18 had mild hypoxaemia, 20 had moderate hypoxaemia and 21 had severe hypoxaemia. The mean ± SD BNP level was significantly higher in all three ALI/ARDS groups (92.41 ± 28.19 pg/ml, 170.64 ± 57.34 pg/ml and 239.06 ± 59.62 pg/ml, respectively, in the mild, moderate and severe groups) than in the non-ALI/ARDS group (47.27 ± 19.63 pg/ml); the increase in BNP level with increasing severity was also statistically significant. When divided according to outcome, the BNP level in the death group (267.07 ± 45.06 pg/ml) was significantly higher than in the survival group (128.99 ± 45.42 pg/ml). Conclusions The BNP level may be of value in evaluating severity and prognosis in patients with ALI/ARDS.
