Abstract: This study’s research aim is to discover how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts early career researchers’ work lives, prospects, and scholarly communication behavior. Early career researchers (ECRs), including doctoral students, post-docs, and pre-tenure faculty, are the next generation of scientists, researchers, scholars, teachers, and academic leaders, and are considered “vulnerable” when compared to their more senior colleagues. Part of an eight-country study, we present findings from long semi-structured interviews of 22 ECRs within the sciences and social sciences from a variety of regions in the United States. Transcripts were approved by the participants and responses were coded into a project-approved spreadsheet for analysis. The coding sheets were multi-faceted, containing both quantitative and qualitative data. Key findings include loss of research productivity due to lab closures and/or human subject research. The most recurring negative impact is the loss of formal and informal in-person meetings. For the majority, the pandemic has not deterred ECRs to deviate from their chosen academic career paths.

Abstract: Thin-walled, 2.54-cm diameter tubular specimens of graphite/epoxy (Fiberite T300/1034) were fatigue cycled in combinations of axial, torsion al, and internal pressure loading. Two different four-ply layup configura tions were tested: [0/90] s and [±45] s ; each tube contained a 0.48-cm diameter circular hole penetrating one wall midway along the tube length. S-N curves were developed to characterize fatigue behavior under pure axial, torsional, or internal pressure loading, as well as combined loading fatigue. A theory was developed based a plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for the uniaxial loading modes. Correlation of the theory with the experi mental data proved to be remarkably good.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare quality of life, functioning, and coping among hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients who continued versus ceased alcohol use in the past year. HCV patients ( n = 291) were recruited from three liver and infectious disease clinics. Student’s t test was used to compare HCV patients who were former and active users of alcohol. The majority of HCV patients were male, African American, and without a high school degree. Compared to former users of alcohol, active users of alcohol self-reported lower ratings on home life, personal leisure, and overall quality of life. In the area of functioning, active users of alcohol self-reported lower ratings on home life, close relationships, sex life, and overall functioning. The two groups did not differ on coping. Most HCV clinicians advise HCV patients to avoid alcohol completely because of its adverse biological effects on the liver. Despite this important advice by their HCV clinicians, most HCV patients continue to use alcohol. HCV clinicians can additionally consider advising these patients that continued alcohol use is associated with lower quality of life and functioning as further evidence to convince these patients to avoid alcohol or to participate in alcohol cessation treatment.

Abstract: Much has been written on what is taught in MBA courses, and legs on how it is taught and the kinds of learning that are encouraged. This paper offers an analysis of different types of learning and their place within an MBA programme; it considers some of the dilemmas for staff and students between analogue and digital learning; between learning about ideas and learning how to do things; between learning about techniques and learning how to learn; and between learning by acquaintance and learning by description. Within these dilemmas it considers the connection between the experience that managers bring to an MBA course, the frameworks and theories that are offered to them within the course, and the merged knowledge and experience that they take from the course, which should enable them to learn more rapidly from experience in the future. The paper describes one particular educational device that has proved effective in enabling MBA students to integrate their knowledge and experience.

Abstract: Previous studies of Chinese leadership have identified Daoism as the main philosophical tradition that makes Chinese leadership behaviour different from western leadership behaviour in terms of its modesty, harmony and submissiveness to authority. However, less attention has been paid to Chinese managers’ own perceptions and representations of traditional thinking in Daoist Wu Wei. In this article, we offer a new, more nuanced understanding of Daoist Wu Wei. We critically explored the link between Wu Wei and self-reflexivity. As a result, this study offers a new understanding of the influence of Daoism on leadership by showing that our participants exhibited three different forms of reflexivity in their ways of believing in Wu Wei, namely: flow, self-protection and an excuse for failing.

Abstract: This is an edited version of an electronic conference for members of the International Advisory Board of Management Learning, in which we invited our Board to discuss 'Management Learning in the year 2000'. Over the five weeks of the conference, from late August through September 1994, those members of the Board who were technologically equipped to do so and who wished were engaged in a lively and increasingly fluent debate about a range of issues under that heading, electronically chaired by David Sims. The editors of Management Learning then edited this conference thematically, taking in turn four main strands that developed in the discussion: * What is management learning? * How might Management Learning build a 'community' of debate and learning? How might Management Learning make a distinctive contribution? * Who should shape the agenda of Management Learning?

Abstract: This paper proposes that, in order to understand how teams work with issues, we need to consider less the question "How does this team deal with its problems?" and ask instead "How does this team come by the problems it works on?" A framework is offered which is intended to facilitate the understanding of, rather than to make "truthful" statements about, problem finding in teams. It considers the nature of problems in teams, the alternative approaches implicit in the terms problem diagnosis and problem finding, the organizational politics of problem finding in teams, and some of the implications these factors have for those who wish to make things happen differently. While the framework was developed through research on the definition and formulation of problems in some Health Care Planning Teams, it is argued that it is likely to have wide heuristic applicability.

Abstract: It is now well known that smart fluids [electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR)] can form the basis of controllable vibration damping devices. With both types of fluid, however, the force/velocity characteristic of the resulting damper is significantly non-linear, possessing the general form associated with a Bingham plastic. In a previous paper the authors showed that by using a linear feedback control strategy it is possible to produce the equivalent of a viscous damper with a continuously variable damping coefficient. In the present paper the authors illustrate an extension of the technique, by showing how the shape of the force/velocity characteristic can be controlled through feedback control. This is achieved by using a polynomial function to generate a set point based upon the damper velocity. The response is investigated for polynomial functions of zero, 1st and 2nd order. It is shown how the damper can accurately track higher order polynomial shaping functions, while the zero-order function is particularly useful in illustrating the dynamics of the closed-loop system.
