    Land—sea linkage of Holocene paleoclimate on the Southern Bering Continental Shelf

    Abstract: Detailed diatom records within surface and core sediments from the Southern Bering Continental Shelf (SBCS) reveal that the Holocene evolution of sea-ice distribution is associated with low pressure patterns. Holocene sea-ice distribution over the SBCS was mainly controlled by the location of the Aleutian Low. The corresponding paleoceanographic and paleoclimate conditions can be divided into three stages: (1) the early Holocene (before 7000 cal. yr BP) was characterized by extensive sea-ice distribution under two low-pressure cells, which covered the western Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska, respectively. (2) Between 3000 and 7000 cal. yr BP, the low-pressure system over the Gulf of Alaska became weak, causing total sea-ice mass over the SBCS to retreat. (3) In the past 3000 years, prevailing southwesterly winds over the SBCS due to the developing Aleutian Low have reduced further sea-ice cover on the SBCS. These paleoclimatic changes were probably a response to ENSO variation. The timings of water mass exchanges on the SBCS coincided with sea-level change along the Alaskan Peninsula. As a result, subsequent morphologic alterations have also influenced the paleoceanographic condition of the SBCS. The effect of the surface coastal water and bottom marine water on the SBCS intensified about 6000 cal. yr BP when sea level increased.

    Combined Sonography : Surgery Clinic for Patients Referred With Thyroid Nodules

    Abstract: We report the results of a joint thyroid clinic with a consultant surgeon and consultant radiologist to offer “triple assessment” for patients on a single visit. All new referrals from September 2011 to December 2013 were reviewed. Among 228 patients referred, 163 patients underwent ultrasonography (US) on the same visit and 66 fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) studies (57 under US guidance) were done. One hundred ninety-eight (87%) patients made a single visit to the clinic for diagnosis. One hundred twenty-five were discharged or referred elsewhere after the visit and 21 underwent surgery; the remaining 52 patients were followed up. There were 7 thyroid cancers and 2 lymphomas diagnosed. We have concluded that the joint ultrasound-surgery clinic provided an effective outpatient thyroid service with fewer hospital visits.

    Abstract: This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the WHOQOL-BREF among 10,693 community-based married Japanese men and women (4376 couples) who were either expecting or raising a child. Analyses of item-response distributions, internal consistency, criterion validity, and discriminant validity indicated that the scale had acceptable reliability and performed well in preliminary tests of validity. Furthermore, dyadic confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the theoretical factor structure was valid and similar across partners, suggesting that men and women define and value quality of life in a similar way.

    Enhancement of Sweetness Ratings of Aspartame by a Vanilla Odor Presented Either by Orthonasal or Retronasal Routes

    Abstract: When taste stimuli are presented with specific odor stimuli, the perceived intensity of taste is enhanced, a phenomenon called odor-induced taste enhancement. There is a possibility, however, that the odor substances might have stimulated the taste receptors in the oral cavity as well as odor receptors in the nasal cavity because the odor substances were dissolved in the taste solutions in some preceding studies. Schifferstein and Verlegh (1996) found that the odor-induced taste enhancement effect was not found when the subjects wore a nose clip to prevent the olfactory perception. Thus, it was suggested that the odor-induced taste enhancement did not result from the stimulation of receptors in the oral cavity. To confirm and extend their study, we presented the odor stimuli simultaneously with, but not dissolved in, the taste stimuli with a more advanced approach to stimulus presentation. The participants reported enhancement of sweetness ratings for aspartame when the taste stimuli were presented with a vanilla odor. This odor-induced taste enhancement was found when the gaseous odor stimuli were presented either by the retronasal route or by the orthonasal route. There was little possibility that the vanilla odor stimulated the taste receptors during the orthonasal stimulation because the odor stimuli were presented directly into the nasal cavity. Thus, we could show that the odor-induced taste enhancement is elicited by olfactory perception. These results also suggested that there is little functional difference between retronasal and orthonasal olfaction.

    Abstract: A 69-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with unresectable papillary thyroid cancer was referred to our hospital. We initially treated her with sorafenib, but she subsequently developed erythema multiforme, which was suspected to be a drug rush due to sorafenib; therefore, sorafenib was discontinued. At the time of discontinuation, immature blast cells were detected in her peripheral blood. Approximately two weeks later, her skin rash improved substantially, but the proportion of blasts in the peripheral blood increased. We performed a bone marrow examination, and she was diagnosed with FLT3-ITD-positive acute myeloid leukemia. FLT3-ITD expression is found in 20–25% of AML and is a known independent poor prognostic factor. To overcome the poor prognosis associated with FLT3-ITD, molecular drugs targeting FLT3-ITD are attracting much attention. Sorafenib, a multi-kinase inhibitor, also has an effect on FLT3-ITD. Although primary disease flares after tyrosine kinase inhibitor discontinuation have been reported, this is the first report to describe discontinuation of sorafenib treatment as a potential trigger of FLT3-ITD-positive acute myeloid leukemia in papillary thyroid cancer.
