    Abstract: This article presents experimental studies on the dynamic response of a thin rectangular plate with clamped boundary conditions subjected to a moving mass. The designed experimental setup is described in detail, and the obtained experimental results are compared with theoretical solutions. In this regard, the governing motion equation of the thin rectangular plate excited by a moving mass is formulated based on the classical plate theory, and the eigenfunction expansion technique is used to solve the equation. Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect of some parameters, including the moving object mass and velocity, as well as the plate’s aspect ratio and thickness, on the dynamic response of the plate based on the time history of the plate’s central point deflection.

    Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present a framework that could be used to achieve the objective of sustainable rural development in a community which is characterized by high numbers of smallholders, landless peasants, and unskilled or semi-skilled labor ultimately leading to low productivity and high rates of poverty. The study presents a design inspired by “Saemaul Undong” (New Village Movement) of South Korea. The proposed model is based on proposing a four-tier approach for the working of the village-level cooperatives which will be self-reliant through a network connection to the national and international markets. Existing studies and surveys in Punjab province of Pakistan have established that rural areas are often lacking essential facilities that affect the abilities of these areas to retain skilled manpower thus leading to resource drain and negatively impacting the agricultural productivity. The proposed Village-City Model, “VCM,” was designed to strengthen the local infrastructure and built interest-based cooperatives to develop an environment which can sustain the benefits of higher productivity and translate these into better livelihoods. It is proposed that farmer-centered cooperatives with appropriate institutional arrangements could result in developing village-based cities where skilled manpower can exert to in better resource use efficiency, access to market coupled with rural finance schemes to enhance resource base and access to technology. The cooperatives experience is considered as a bitter experience in Pakistan. However, the analysis of failures of cooperatives in Pakistan revealed many bottlenecks which have been addressed through indigenization of Saemaul Undong.

    Abstract: Health care workers (HCWs) are exposed to high risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection due to close contact with infected patients in hospital. The objective of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence and to identify the exposure risk of various subgroups among HCWs to prioritize them for early vaccination. Methods: This was a multicentre cross-sectional study conducted between 15 and 29 June 2020. A total of 987 HCWs were recruited randomly from two major tertiary-care hospitals of Peshawar city, Pakistan. The HCWs included doctors, nurses, paramedics and hospital support staff. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved kit was used for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Results: Overall, 310 (31.4%) HCWs were seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (95% confidence interval, CI: 28.5–34.4). Seroprevalence was higher in males (33.5%) and in age group 51–60 years (40.9%). Seropositivity increased with increasing age from 8.3% in age group ⩽20 to 40.9% in 51–60 years of age group ( p  〈  0.05). The highest seroprevalence was identified in paramedical staff (42·5%, 95% CI: 36.6–48.6) followed by nursing staff (38·8%, 95% CI: 32.1–45.7). In logistic regression, being a male HCW led to higher risk of seropositivity (odds ratio, OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1·06–2.13. p  〈  0.05) compared with female staff members. The odds of seropositivity was higher in nurses (OR: 3·47, 95% CI: 1.99–6.05. p  〈  0.01), paramedical staff (OR: 3·19, 95% CI: 1.93–5.28. p  〈  0.01) and hospital support staff (OR: 2·47, 95% CI: 1.29–4.7. p  〈  0.01) compared with consultants. Conclusion: Overall, our results concluded that nursing and paramedical staff are at higher risk and should be vaccinated on priority.

    Abstract: The safety of the nuclear reactor revolves around the accurate analysis of rapid flow transient for the design and manufacturing of reactor coolant pumps. In this article, the coastdown transient initiated by the loss of offsite power is simulated. In this case, the pumps are operated by the inertia of the flywheel, therefore, the reliable operation of reactor coolant pumps is the key to the safety of the nuclear reactor. A new hydraulic, as well as the thermal model, is developed for simulating various core parameters during the coastdown period. The present hydraulic model accounts for both the pump half-time and the loop half-time, which is used to increase the accuracy of predicted results over a longer period of time. The results predicted by the hydraulic model are incorporated into a thermal model, which also includes the decay heat following the reactor shutdown. This new model depends upon the core time constant, loop time constant, pump half-time, and hydraulic constant coefficient. The predicted results of flow rate, pressure, temperature, and departure from nucleate boiling ratio are compared with the experimental data and have found good agreement between the two cases. Finally, the departure from nucleate boiling ratio shows that the transient behavior of the reactor is moving toward safety.

    Abstract: Aerva plants are known widely for their exceptional medicinal uses. They have been employed conventionally for their medicinal properties by the common folk in several regions of the world. This indicates the efficacy of these remarkable herbs. They are also known for their multiple biological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antilithiatic, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, anticancer, antihyperlipidemic and nephroprotective potential. These pharmacological actions are associated with the presence of valuable nutrients and biochemical compounds such as sterols/terpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics and sugars. The proper utilization of the substances obtained from these plants can enhance the finesse of the capabilities of these plants. These plants are not only medicinally important but are significantly serving several other scientific purposes. In the prospect of medicinal, scientific uses and the bioavailability of precious chemicals of Aerva species, a comprehensive review is compiled, which focuses on the detailed profile of biochemical compounds, pharmacological functions and biological activities of Aerva plants. The review also discusses the synthetic importance and the toxicity of these plants. The study aims to compile comprehensively what is already done and what more is needed to be done in the future investigations related to Aerva species.

    Abstract: Extensive studies on evaluation of effectiveness/toxicity of different oral doses of iodine have not been explored yet. An open-labeled phase I clinical studies were conducted using iodine complex based research compound called Renessans. Study groups were observed for development of any adverse/serious adverse events and alteration in laboratory values of vital organs, TSH and T4 hormones before and after the administration of the products. Out of 31 consented individuals, 24 healthy individuals participated in the study. Rate of occurrence of mild Adverse Events (AEs) in group A was 8.3% while in Group B it was 33.33% but these Adverse Events were self-resolving. After completion of study treatment blood serum iodine was reported to 3522.88 µg/l while mean urine iodine concentration (MUIC) was greater than 2000 µg/l. Hormonal and vital organ’s testing revealed that all parameters of TSH and T4, LFT, CBC, RFT remained unaltered except from ALT-SGPT ( P-value = .006) and AST-SGOT ( P-value = .02). From all of these findings, it can be inferred that the use of Renessans formulations did not pose any sort of risk to human body and can be considered safe through this pilot study.

    Abstract: Given evidence that most smokers start smoking before the age of 18 and that smokers who start earlier in life are less likely to quit, policies that reduce or delay initiation could have a large impact on public health. Raising the legal minimum purchase age of cigarettes to 21 may be an effective way for states to reduce youth smoking by making it harder for teens to buy cigarettes from stores and by reducing the number of legal buyers they encounter in their normal social circles. To inform the ongoing debate over this policy option in California, this study provides an evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of raising the state’s legal smoking age to 21. Costs and benefits were estimated from a societal perspective using a dynamic computer simulation model that simulates changes to the California population in age, composition, and smoking behavior over time. Secondary data for model parameters were obtained from publicly available sources. Population health impacts were estimated in terms of smoking prevalence and the change in cumulative quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) to the California population over a 50-year period. Economic impacts were measured in monetary terms for medical cost savings, cost of law enforcement, and cost of checking identification. Compared to a status quo simulation, raising the smoking age to 21 would result in a drop in teen (ages 14-17) smoking prevalence from 13.3% to 2.4% (82% reduction). The policy would generate no net costs, in fact saving the state and its inhabitants a total of $24 billion over the next 50 years with a gain of 1.47 million QALYs compared to status quo. This research should prove useful to California’s policy makers as they contemplate legislation to raise the state’s legal smoking age.

    Abstract: The crisis created by the pandemic severely disrupted the working patterns of employees, especially in the aviation industry. It is insufficient for workers to be satisfied – they have to be engaged in their work to deal with crises and situations never encountered before. Thus, investigating the antecedents of work engagement and their interactive effects is crucial to organizational survival. The paper examines the impact of the trait of curiosity on proactive personality, which ultimately leads to work engagement. The moderated-mediation model looks at the mediating effect of proactive personality on the relationship between curiosity and work engagement. It also examines the moderating effect of organizational culture perceptions on the relationship between curiosity and proactive personality. A sample of 327 respondents was collected from 32 organizations in the aviation industry in the United Arab Emirates through purposive sampling. The hypothesized associations were analyzed via structural equation modelling. As predicted, proactive personality is a mediator, and organizational culture moderates the said relationships. Managers desirous of improving employees’ work engagement will now understand how employees’ curiosity can enhance work engagement through proactive personality. Managers can also ensure that organizational culture can further strengthen the relationship between curiosity and proactive personality.

    Abstract: Bio-inspired self-healing strategies are much innovative and potentially viable for the production of healable cement mortar matrix. The present research explores the feasibility of gram-positive “Bacillus subtilis” microorganisms in the effective healing of nano-/micro-scale-induced structural and non-structural cracks. The main concern related to the survival of such microorganisms in cementitious environment has been successfully addressed by devising proficient immobilization scheme coherently. The investigated immobilizing media includes iron oxide nano-sized particles, micro-sized limestone particles, and milli-sized siliceous sand. The effect of induced B. subtilis microorganisms immobilized on nano-micro-additives was analyzed by the quantification of average compressive resistance of specimens (ASTM C109) and healing evaluation. The healing process was mechanically gauged by compressive strength regain of pre-cracked specimens after the healing period of 28 days. The pre-cracking load was affixed at 80% of ultimate compressive stress “[Formula: see text] ” while the age of pre-cracking was kept variable as 3, 7, 14, and 28 days to precisely correlate healing effectiveness as the function of cracking period. The healing mechanism was further explored by examining the healed micro-crack using field emission scanning electron micrographs, energy dispersive x-ray spectrographs, and thermogravimetry. The results revealed that B. subtilis microorganisms contribute extremely well in the improvement of compressive strength and efficient healing process of pre-cracked cement mortar formulations. The iron oxide nano-sized particles were found to be the most effective immobilizer for preserving B. subtilis microbes till the generation of cracks followed by siliceous sand and limestone particles. The micro-graphical and chemical investigations endorsed the mechanical measurements by evidencing calcite precipitation in the induced nano-/micro-cracks as a result of microbial activity.
