Abstract: Cruises on the Portuguese Douro river have been growing at a much faster pace than overall outbound tourism to Portugal, suggesting that the river is part of a worldwide trend that has been organized by global cruise operators. A gravity model is used to analyse the main factors affecting the international demand for Douro river cruising over the period from 2007 to 2014. The numbers of international passengers are positively determined by income per capita of origin country and by the population size of the leading countries of outbound tourism to Portugal.

Abstract: Following the global outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, individuals report psychological distress associated with the “new normal”—social distancing, financial hardships, and increased responsibilities while working from home. Given the interpersonal nature of stress and coping responses between romantic partners, based on the systemic transactional model this study posits that perceived partner dyadic coping may be an important moderator between experiences of COVID-19 psychological distress and relationship quality. To examine these associations, self-report data from 14,020 people across 27 countries were collected during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic (March–July, 2020). It was hypothesized that higher symptoms of psychological distress would be reported post-COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19 restrictions (Hypothesis 1), reports of post-COVID-19 psychological distress would be negatively associated with relationship quality (Hypothesis 2), and perceived partner DC would moderate these associations (Hypothesis 3). While hypotheses were generally supported, results also showed interesting between-country variability. Limitations and future directions are presented.

Abstract: The gender of the offender has been proved to be an important factor in judicial sentencing. In this study, we analyze the judgments of College students regarding perpetrators of familial homicides to evaluate the presence of these gender norms and biases in the larger society. The sample included 303 college students (54.8% female) enrolled in several social sciences and engineering courses. Participants were asked to read 12 vignettes based on real crimes taken from Portuguese newspapers. Half were related to infanticide, and half were related to intimate partner homicide. The sex of the offender was orthogonally manipulated to the type of crime. The results show that gender had an important impact on sentences, with males being more harshly penalized by reasons of perversity and women less penalized by reason of mental disorders. In addition, filicide was more heavily penalized than was intimate partner homicide. The results also revealed a tendency toward a retributive conception of punishment. We discuss how gender norms in justice seem to be embedded in society as well as the need for intervention against the punitive tendency of this population.

Abstract: Cardiac involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is well documented. The pericardium, myocardium and endocardium, as well as the coronary arteries, the valves and the conduction system can all be affected. While pericarditis is common, arrythmias are less frequently described. We present a 13-year-old male, who had fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, myalgias and arthralgias for four months. On physical examination, we identified bradycardia (heart rate 31–50 bpm), oral and nasal ulcers and polyarthritis. The laboratory results showed hemolytic anemia, hypocomplementemia, antinuclear and anti-dsDNA antibodies, hematuria and non-nephrotic proteinuria. Renal function was normal. Lupus nephritis class II was diagnosed by kidney biopsy. On the transthoracic echocardiogram we identified a minimal pericardial effusion, suggesting pericarditis, and, on the electrocardiogram, we detected sinus arrest with junctional rhythm, denoting sinus node dysfunction. The patient was diagnosed with juvenile SLE with cardiac, renal, musculoskeletal and hematologic involvement. Disease remission and cardiac rhythm control were obtained with steroids and mycophenolate mofetil. Currently, the patient is asymptomatic, with normal sinus rhythm. We described an adolescent with SLE who had sinus node dysfunction upon diagnosis. Other cases have been reported in adults but none in juvenile SLE. All SLE patients should have a thorough cardiac examination to promptly diagnose and treat the innumerous cardiac manifestations of this disease.

Abstract: This paper extends the traditional gravity model to explain the effect of digitalization on international tourism flows to five Southern European countries, where tourism plays an important economic role. The analysis is based on balanced panel data covering the period 2004–2019. Internet-user statistics and Google Trends search data are used as a proxy for digital adoption and virtual proximity, respectively, by source markets. Results lend support to the notion that virtual proximity rather than digital adoption aided international travel, demonstrating that digitalization cannot be interpreted as a fluid and vague concept that exerts a consistent effect. Results also present evidence that Southern European countries should not be treated as a block of homogenous destinations. These findings inform stakeholders regarding the significance of digital platforms as strategic tools to empower consumers.
