Abstract: A novel fibre surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor fabricated by a silver mirror reaction is first proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The experimental results showed that the silver film characteristics of the fibre SPR sensing probe are affected by the concentration of silver ammonia solution, and the relations between the concentration of silver ammonia solution and properties of the sensors have been obtained, which is in accordance with the optimal parameters of fibre and silver film through a theoretical simulation. Firstly, a theoretical model of a silver film-based fibre SPR sensing mechanism has been built up. Then the numerical simulations towards the influence of sensing structure, thickness and sensing length of metal films on the sensing system sensitivity have been performed. Finally, the optimal structure parameters of the sensor are obtained. The results show that this fibre SPR sensing system provides a promising platform for sodium chloride solution concentration measurement with a concentration sensitivity of 710.4 nm/%.

Abstract: Initial imperfections can cause evident influence on the bearing capacity of lattice shells. In this article, the member initial imperfections including the initial bending and residual stress are considered by the Marshall model which is a phenomenon model based on the hysteresis loop of the real structural imperfect member under cyclic loading. The geometrical initial imperfection of lattice shells resulting from the structure assembly deviation is represented by the normally distributed random variable. The bearing capacities of lattice shells with initial imperfections are assumed to be distributed normally, and then this assumption is proved correct by the nonparametric test. The expressions of the mean value and variance estimators of the normally distributed structural bearing capacities are derived by the maximum likelihood method. A new method to calculate the design bearing capacity of the initial imperfect lattice shell at a uniform probability level is proposed, and its error expression at certain confidence level is derived. Numerical analysis indicates that some members of the structure at the ultimate limit state get buckled as a result of the member initial imperfections. The structure bearing capacity can be markedly overestimated if the member initial imperfections are neglected. The nonlinear design bearing capacity of the lattice shell at a uniform probability level cannot be acquired by the methods suggested by the structure design code.

Abstract: To determine the efficacy of low-dose, immediate-release tacrolimus in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) with inadequate response to glucocorticoid therapy in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Methods Eligible patients had inadequate response to glucocorticoids (GCs) after ⩾6 weeks of treatment with prednisone ⩾0.75 mg/kg/day or 60–100 mg/day. Patients were randomized to receive 3 mg tacrolimus or placebo daily (orally) for 24 weeks. Concomitant glucocorticoids and pyridostigmine were allowed. Patients continued GC therapy from weeks 1–4; from week 5, the dose was decreased at the discretion of the investigator. The primary efficacy outcome measure was a reduction, relative to baseline, in quantitative myasthenia gravis (QMG) score assessed using a generalized linear model; supportive analyses used alternative models. Results Of 138 patients screened, 83 [tacrolimus ( n = 45); placebo ( n = 38)] were enrolled and treated. The change in adjusted mean QMG score from baseline to week 24 was −4.9 for tacrolimus and −3.3 for placebo (least squares mean difference: –1.7, 95% confidence interval: −3.5, −0.1; p = 0.067). A post-hoc analysis demonstrated a statistically significant difference for QMG score reduction of ⩾4 points in the tacrolimus group (68.2%) versus the placebo group (44.7%; p = 0.044). Adverse event profiles were similar between treatment groups. Conclusions Tacrolimus 3 mg treatment for patients with MG and inadequate response to GCs did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in the primary endpoint versus placebo over 24 weeks; however, a post-hoc analysis demonstrated a statistically significant difference for QMG score reduction of ⩾4 points in the tacrolimus group versus the placebo group. This study was limited by the low number of patients, the absence of testing for acetylcholine receptor antibody and the absence of stratification by disease duration (which led to a disparity between the two groups). Abstract: In order to lower photocatalytic degradation of TiO 2 on skin and textiles, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCH) was used to coat TiO 2 nanoparticles. The polymer (CMCH) not only acted as the blocking agent of photocatalytic activity, but also dispersed TiO 2 nanoparticles better to prohibit them from congregation by anchoring them. The structure of as-prepared nanocomposites was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The TiO 2 /CMCH nanocomposites were coated onto cotton fabrics by a dip-pad—drycure process. The treated cotton fabrics demonstrated lower photocatalytic activity in comparison to cotton fabrics treated by pure TiO 2 in a typical photocatalytic test. The treated cotton showed a combination of bactericidal activity of TiO 2 and CMCH, and excellent protection against UV radiation.

Abstract: Wireless body area networks (WBANs) have become a leading solution in mobile health (mHealth). Typically, a WBAN consists of in-body or around-body sensor nodes for collecting data of physiological feature. For a WBAN to provide high throughput and low delay in an energy-efficient way, designing an efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol is of paramount importance because the MAC layer coordinates nodes’ access to the shared wireless medium. To show the difference of MAC protocols between Energy-Harvesting wireless body area networks (EH-WBANs) and battery powered WBANs (BT-WBANs), this paper surveys the latest progresses in energy harvesting techniques and WBAN MAC protocol designs. Furthermore, a novel energy utility architecture is designed to enable sensor node lifetime operation in an EH-WBAN.

Abstract: This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated a high-resolution voltage measurement method based on fiber loop cavity ring-down (FLCRD) technology and polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film as the sensing device. In this measurement system, PDLC is made into a film structure used as sensing device to measure external voltage changes, and the experiments were carried out to measure the relationships between light transmittivity of PDLC film and the external voltage. The FLCRD system with optimized structure parameters is obtained by numerical simulation, and the splitting ratios of fiber couplers used in the sensing system are optimized, and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier is used to compensate system signal loss, which has made a lot of improvement in the signal noise ratio and sensitivity. Finally, the experimental results show that the resolution of voltage measurement is 0.29 mV (0.0015%) in the range of 0-60V, which improved the resolution by 10 times compared with the current methods.

Abstract: The push toward smarter transportation management and decision-making has increased significantly in recent years. Toward this end, it is constructive to establish a traffic intelligence platform leveraging web services, big data analytics, and cloud computing. The developers of any such platform always face the challenge of selecting or creating composition plans from among numerous possible plans, often with unclear requirements, that satisfy their quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Typical QoS properties associated with a web service are execution cost and time, availability, successful evaluation, usage frequency, and accuracy. Most of these factors are vague and/or difficult to quantity. To address the need to handle vague inputs, a constraint satisfaction-based web service composition algorithm is proposed, which is based on fuzzy multi-objective linear programming. A genetic algorithm with Pareto optimization evaluation with weighted standardized Euclidean distance is used that demonstrates good performance as the quantity of service candidate increases. The algorithm is capable of finding a satisfactory solution under input of vague QoS requirements, which shows better capability than multiple-objective linear programming. The applicability and performance of the proposed algorithm are validated in an online transportation analytics platform environment.

Abstract: In this article, two samples of two-stage rolling piston CO 2 compressors with and without intercooler are developed and experimentally studied. These CO 2 compressors are high back-pressure compressors, which mean the pressure inside compressor shell is the discharge pressure of the second stage. A test rig was designed to measure the performance and efficiency of this compressor. The test results show that the suction vapor temperature at the second stage inlet pipe has few influences on the performance and efficiency of the first compressor sample with intercooler. The volumetric efficiency linearly decreases with the increase of compression ratio of the suction and discharge pressure, and the volumetric efficiency can maintain in a relative constant range during a wide compression ratio changes in this high back-pressure design. There exists an optimum compression ratio for each suction pressure at the first stage, where the compressor isentropic efficiency is maximum. A generalized volumetric efficiency correlation for two-stage CO 2 rolling piston compressor as a function of compression ratio is proposed and it can describe 100% of the test data within ±5.0% with a mean deviation of 1.7%. This would be helpful as a guide for designing such type compressor.
