Abstract: Large amplitude forced vibration behavior of thin beams under harmonic excitation is studied, incorporating the effect of geometric nonlinearity. Large amplitude free vibration analysis of the same system is also carried out to obtain the backbone curves. When a very small loading is considered, the system response becomes almost identical to the backbone curve, which confirms the validity of the large amplitude study. The sets of governing equations for both forced and free vibration problems are obtained using Hamilton’s principle, whereas the same for the static problem are obtained by applying the variational form of the energy principle. The solution of the static problem provides system stiffness as a function of deflection and it becomes an input to the corresponding free vibration problem. The results are presented in the nondimensional frequency–amplitude plane in the form of response curves, and the related backbone curves are shown to represent the complete system behavior. Results for different combinations of classical flexural boundary conditions and loading patterns are reported.

Abstract: This paper undertakes a large amplitude forced vibration analysis of stiffened plates with free edges under harmonic excitation through a numerical method. The methodology adopted is an indirect one in which the dynamic system is assumed to satisfy the force equilibrium condition at peak excitation amplitude. Free vibration analysis at the deflected configuration of the same system is also carried out separately to determine the backbone curves. The mathematical formulation is based on energy principles and the governing equations in both forced and free vibration cases are derived using Hamilton’s principle. The set of nonlinear governing equations is solved by employing an iterative direct substitution method with an appropriate relaxation technique. A multidimensional quasi-Newton method, known as Broyden’s method, is separately used when the system becomes computationally stiff. The results for a reduced system are validated with the published results of other researchers. For different combinations of boundary conditions including free edge results are furnished in the dimensionless amplitude-frequency plane. The effect of in-plane end conditions is studied by considering immovable and movable edges. Response in the vicinity of the second mode is also studied. Three dimensional operational deflection shape plots along with contour plots are also provided in a few cases.

Abstract: This article tries to explore the shifts in contemporary urban Bengali cinema and map and historicize the main trends in relation to changes in the political fortunes of the city. In this context, the article tentatively wishes to accomplish two things: one, to show the main trends in urban Bengali film-making, post-1990s; and two, to read closely two recent Bengali films, in a search for ways of mapping this newness. The article first identifies three new possibilities in Bengali cinema: first, the inward-looking, often apolitical sketches that celebrate liberal development and psychosomatic indulgences, second, the sentimental, community-based films that sometimes take political changes on board as well, and attempt to bridge the rural-urban divide; third, cult-ish films of a newer pedigree that show impatience with old Left and progressive values, and are also technically experimental and avant-garde. The second objective of the article is to discuss specifically two contemporary filmmakers – Moinak Biswas and Suman Mukhopadhay – and place their films within this ferment.

Abstract: Super-hydrophobic electrospun membranes are very essential barrier materials to physically isolate the wound site in order to prevent adhesions and for restoring the normal functioning of the surrounding tissues and organs. In the present study, poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/beeswax (BW) based nanofibrous anti-adhesion membranes were fabricated by electrospinning technique. The BW concentration was varied from 10 to 30 wt.%. The nanofibers were evaluated for their morphological and physio-chemical properties. The electrospun mats demonstrate random distribution of nanofibers. Surface wettability was evaluated using static water contact angle method. PCL/BW (70/30) membrane had shown super-hydrophobicity (contact angle = 150°). From the cell culture studies, it was evident that cell viability, adhesion and proliferation of L929 cells on PCL/BW (70/30) membrane were comparatively lower than those on pure PCL membrane due to its super-hydrophobic nature. Consequently, PCL/BW (70/30) membrane was found as a potential candidate for fibroblast (L929) cell anti-adhesion applications.

Abstract: Positioning of central venous catheter (CVC) tip in the intrathoracic portion of superior vena cava (SVC) is essential during the surgical repair of superior sinus venous atrial septal defects (SVASD). Although tracheal carina is described as a radiological landmark for positioning the tip of CVCs, it may not be successful at all times. We describe a case of SVC type SVASD, where the SVC-right pulmonary artery crossing point imaged on transesophageal echocardiography was used as an echocardiographic landmark for optimal positioning of the CVC tip.

Abstract: Two cases of viral hepatitis that had failed conventional therapy are presented. Both were subsequently treated with protocols using homeopathic medicines as detailed below. Both patients sustained remissions for 2 years after taking ultradilute natural medicines after their conventional treatment had been discontinued. Methods: The treatment protocol included Chelidonium majus 6X and Thuja 30C as the main medicines. Other homeopathic medicines were used as detailed below. Cases were confirmed with standard hepatitis antibody and viral measurements. Patients were followed for more than 2 years with measurements of viral counts, liver enzymes, and other relevant biomarkers of liver disease. Results: Both patients are alive and functioning normally in their home environments more than 2 years after treatment initiation. Discussion: We review the literature related to the chief medicines used in these cases and find that they have known and demonstrated therapeutic effects suggesting plausible mechanisms of action in these cases. Conclusions: Clinical trials of this homeopathic treatment protocol should be conducted to explore the therapeutic potential of these medicines for treatment of viral hepatitis.

Abstract: Identification of interfacial delamination in the glass fiber/polymer-foam-core sandwich composites is difficult if the delamination does not propagate to the side surface of the specimen. However, these damages may eventually lead to compromising the sandwich composite structural component. A cost-effective novel embedded fiber optic sensor is being proposed in this manuscript, which works on the principle of multimode interference, to perform distributed sensing of interfacial delamination within the sandwich composites while in service. Even though this easy to use methodology has been used to identify interfacial delamination, this methodology can also be used for different other types of interfacial/interlaminar distributed strain sensing of samples under mechanical as well as thermal loads.
