Kurzfassung: This cross-sectional study assessed the impact of clinical epilepsy severity and pretreatment hypsarrhythmia severity on epilepsy and cognitive outcomes in treated children with West syndrome. Thirty-three children, aged 1 to 5 years, with infantile spasms were enrolled if pretreatment EEG records were available, after completion of ≥1 year of onset of spasms. Neurodevelopment was assessed by Development Profile 3 and Gross Motor Function Classification System. Epilepsy severity in the past 1 year was determined by the Early Childhood Epilepsy Severity Score (E-Chess). Kramer Global Score of hypsarrhythmia severity was computed. Kramer Global Score (≤8) and E-Chess (≤9) in the past 1 year were associated with favorable epilepsy outcome but not neurodevelopmental or motor outcome.

Kurzfassung: The advent of plastics and the wide range of fillers that are available have made modification as precise as the tailored resins themselves. Compounds are prepared from poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and two fillers, talc and synthetic sodium aluminum silicate (SSAS), at varying concentrations (up to 40 wt%). The effects of both the fillers on the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, salt spray performance; rheological as well as optical properties of filled PMMA are measured. The impact strength of PMMA increased with increasing concentrations of talc and SSAS up to 20 and 15% loading, respectively, and thereafter declined continuously in both the cases. Increase in impact strength is more in the case of talc-filled PMMA than that of SSAS-filled PMMA. Tensile strength decreased with increasing concentration of both the fillers continuously. The elongation at break decreased drastically for PMMA with increasing concentrations of both the fillers. Electrical properties remained almost unchanged with respect to the concentration of the fillers. The zero shear viscosity increased with increasing concentration of both the fillers, but the rate of increase was more for SSAS than that for talc.

Kurzfassung: Various micronutrients are essential for optimal functioning of the peripheral nervous system. Serum vitamin E, vitamin B 12 , and folic acid were estimated in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors aged between 5 and 18 years in first continuous remission within 3 years of completion of vincristine-based chemotherapy with and without electrophysiologically defined neuropathy. A total of 80 children were studied. Neuropathy was seen in 27 (33.75%) children electrophysiologically. None of the children had vitamin E deficiency. However, the alpha tocopherol/(cholesterol + triglyceride) ratio was significantly lower in children with neuropathy ( P = .05). The prevalence of folate ( P = .48) and vitamin B 12 ( P = .21) deficiency in children with and without neuropathy was not significantly different. Thus, the prevalence of deficiencies of these micronutrients was not significantly different in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors with or without electrophysiologically defined neuropathy.

Kurzfassung: The prevalence and the burden of vincristine-induced neuropathy have been poorly documented in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors. This cross-sectional study was carried out at a tertiary care center in northern India from October 2011 to June 2012. Eighty consecutive acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors aged 5 to 18 years, within 3 years of completion of their chemotherapy, were enrolled. After clinical evaluation, detailed nerve conduction studies were performed and the reduced version of the Total Neuropathy Score was calculated. The mean age at the time of evaluation was 11.2 ± 3.2 years. 33.75% had neuropathy electrophysiologically. Symmetric motor axonal polyneuropathy was the most common pattern of involvement seen in 19 (23.8%) children. There was significant improvement with time, as revealed by lower prevalence of neuropathy with increasing interval following vincristine injection. 33.75% of the children had Reduced version of Total Neuropathy Score ≥ 1.
