    Abstract: Using energy effectively is one of the most important issues and problems that countries should take up. As a parallel of increasing energy demands worldwide and still mostly using fossil fuels, energy saving issues have gained much importance in recent years for all areas of life. It is a fact that construction also plays an important role in the emergence of the energy and environmental problem that we see as the problem of our centenary. As buildings consume about 40% of the world's annual energy consumption globally, this study will focus on the evaluation of residential heating system alternatives using the generalized Choquet integral method with trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. The main contribution of this paper is to determine the interdependency among main criteria and subcriteria, the nonlinear relationship among them and the environmental uncertainties while prioritizing residential heating system alternatives using the generalized Choquet integral method with the experts’ view. To the authors’ knowledge, this will be the first interdisciplinary study that uses the generalized Choquet integral method for residential heating systems.

    Abstract: To generate alternatives and variations of specific architectural models, shape grammars can be used by applying a set of geometric rules step by step. With the development in human life, advances in store design, design concept, commercial buildings’ architectural and spatial fiction, the magazine of the interior, and facade design cause rising competition between stores and also between designers. For this reason, in this paper we study the evaluation of store plan alternatives produced with shape grammar using two of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques with fuzzy numbers, namely fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy analytic network process. The main contribution of this paper is to prioritize plan alternatives using numerical methods with experts’ view. To the authors’ knowledge, this will be the first interdisciplinary study which uses MCDM techniques for evaluating shape grammar outputs in architectural design.

    Abstract: In the previous paper, the store plan alternatives produced with shape grammar were evaluated using two of multi-criteria decision making techniques with triangular fuzzy numbers, namely fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy ANP. In addition to fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy ANP results, another multi-criteria decision making technique, the generalized Choquet integral method with trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, is used for evaluation and the result of this method is compared with fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy ANP results. The main contribution of this paper is to determine the interdependency among main criteria and subcriteria, the nonlinear relationship among them and the environmental uncertainties while prioritizing plan alternatives using the generalized Choquet integral method with the experts’ same data that evaluated in the previous study. To the authors’ knowledge, this will be the first interdisciplinary study which uses the generalized Choquet integral method in the field of architectural design.

    Abstract: Arachidonic acid metabolites such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes have been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of otitis media (OM). Among these mediators, leukotriene B4 (LTB4) is one of the most potent inducers of inflammatory processes. SC-41930 has been shown to be a specific LTB4 receptor antagonist both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, anti-inflammatory effects of SC-41930 were investigated in a guinea pig model of OM induced by middle ear (ME) inoculation of killed Staphylococcus aureus. Outcome of treatment was determined by measurement of myeloperoxidase activity in the samples of ME mucosa, evaluation of temporal bone histopathology, and presence of ME fluids. Myeloperoxidase activity in the SC-41930-treated group was found to be significantly lower than that in the control group. Histopathology of temporal bones indicated decreased inflammation in the treated group as compared to the controls. In addition, ME fluids were absent in four out of six treated animals. These results demonstrate that SC-41930 can produce significant anti-inflammatory effects in this model of OM.

    Abstract: Hemorrhoidectomy is used for the surgical treatment of high-grade hemorrhoids. The most prominent complaint after hemorrhoidectomy is pain. Postoperative pain management is still a big problem after surgery in patients with hemorrhoidectomy. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of early application of warm bag on postoperative pain after hemorrhoidectomy. All patients were randomly divided into warm plastic bag and control groups by using sealed envelopes, which were prepared preoperatively. After standard spinal anesthesia, all patients underwent standard Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy using Ligasure™. Although the study group received the warm bag application, the control group did not receive such a treatment. Two separate visual analog scale (VAS) measurements were performed for postoperative pain assessments on postoperative days, one during the resting state and the other one during the straining phase after the onset of peristaltic bowel movement. Postoperative VAS scores were significantly lower among the warm plastic bag group as compared with the control group on Days 1 and 3 for the resting state and on Day 3 for defecation. Additionally, a significant difference existed between the two groups in terms of the need for additional anesthesia. Local thermal application appears to be a safe and effective method for pain relief after hemorrhoidectomy.

    Abstract: Platelet activating factor (PAF), a potent inflammatory mediator, is a biologically active phospholipid. Recent studies have shown that PAF may play an important role in the pathogenesis of otitis media (OM). WEB 2170 BS has been shown to be a PAF antagonist both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, ME fluid was absent in 16 of the 20 ears of the 10 treated animals. These results demonstrate that WEB 2170 BS can produce significant anti-inflammatory effects in this model of OM.

    Abstract: This article reports on the findings of an investigation on 29 historic stone masonry buildings located in the cities of Hatay and Osmaniye following the 2023 Turkey earthquake sequence. The earthquake couplet on 6 February (with moment magnitudes 7.8 and 7.5) and the following events (including another earthquake which occurred on 20 February with a moment magnitude of 6.3) resulted in significant damage to the buildings. To understand why, the examined buildings were assigned an EMS-98 damage level (ranging from 1 to 5) and descriptive response categories (masonry disaggregation, local mechanism, and global response). Overall damage statistics indicated that masonry disaggregation was common and coterminous with local mechanism response. Wall geometry and construction quality indices were then investigated to explore why these were the dominant damage mechanisms. Wall geometry indices highlighted insufficient amount of walls to resist the local seismic demands, particularly in the transverse (e.g. short) direction of buildings. This deficit promoted the formation of local mechanisms. Construction quality indices suggested that stone layouts did not enable interlocking and that the walls were prone to disaggregation. To further investigate the role of material properties on the observed damage, materials were characterized using three non-destructive testing techniques: ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) measurements to estimate the static elastic modulus of stones, Schmidt rebound hammer (SRH) tests to estimate the compressive strength of stones, and the mortar penetrometer (MP) tests to estimate the compressive strength of mortar. The measurements indicated poor mortar quality, which may have expedited failures. Using established correlations, various other important material parameters (e.g. mortar cohesion and homogenized masonry strength) are derived. It is envisioned that the damage observations and the material measurements in this article will inform detailed modeling efforts on the behavior of historic masonry buildings during the earthquakes.
