Abstract: Damage initiation and evolution in SCS-6/Timetal 21S with quasiisotropic layup loaded under quasi-static and dynamic bending is investigated. When the axes of the fibers in the outer ply are transverse to the bending stress ([90/ 45/0] s layup), the bending strength is significantly lower and damage in the form of fiber-matrix separation initiates sooner than when the fibers in the outer ply are parallel to the bending stress ([0/ 45/90] s). The damage process and plasticity for dynamic bending is similar to quasi-static bending with the asymptotic damage level being the same for both. However, the rate of increase of damage with strain is smaller for dynamic bending compared to quasi-static bending. The energy dissipated in this titanium matrix composite under dynamic loading is smaller than either a graphite-fiber polymide-matrix composite or a glass-fiber bismaleimidematrix composite.

Abstract: This narrative presents the educational route followed by an Intel Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) winner who was not always recognized for his scientific abilities. Factors contributing to the success of this gifted student are presented, as well as his creative insights for solving the problem that gave rise to the winning project. Further, the major issues that emerged from this student's story can inform both professional development and instructional practice. These issues include: the need to recognize science talent or creative productive behaviors in students with special needs; students’ need for an experiential science curriculum that incorporates multidisciplinary perspectives from which to study and apply the discipline of science, not merely the subject matter; the power of collaboration between students with similar interests; and the value of developing instructional strategies that accommodate a variety of learning difficulties and learning styles.

Abstract: Objective. Pediatric hypertension remains largely unrecognized. We hypothesized that an electronic medical record (EMR) alert would increase elevated blood pressure (BP) recognition in a pediatric primary care setting. Study Design. Pre–post evaluation of a real-time EMR alert and one-time provider educational session. A total of 1305 encounters of children 3 to 21 years with elevated intake BP and no prior hypertension diagnosis were included. Elevated BP recognition and relationship of recognition with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors during the intervention was compared with an historical control. Results. Recognition increased from 12.5% to 42% ( P 〈 .001). Recognition increased soon after alert implementation and was sustained without evidence of “alert fatigue.” During both periods, presence of CVD risk factors was associated with recognition. However, the magnitude was lesser in the intervention period. Conclusions. Real-time EMR alerts substantially increase elevated BP recognition in children. However, underrecognition of elevated BP persisted, highlighting the need for additional strategies to improve provider recognition.

Abstract: The repair of a crooked nose relies on the successful straightening of the crooked septum. Failure to align the septum properly can compromise the final result. The versatility and effectiveness of using an open approach to repair the septal deformity are examined. The technique involves an extensive degloving of the septum, with a release of all extrinsic tethering attachments. This is followed by a direct repair of the intrinsic angulations of the septum, with cartilage splint grafts being applied to support and straighten the septum, and cartilage spreader grafts used to camouflage deviations and elevate segments of upper lateral cartilage collapse. Thirty-two patients were managed with this approach. The exposure is excellent, and the procedure is not difficult to perform because the steps are logical and anatomically based. The enhanced precision of repair results in greater predictability and an improved final result.

Abstract: This paper reviews the results of 26 tertiary and salvage rhinoplasties, all managed by the open technique. Typically, the endonasal approach has been recommended for these difficult cases because of concerns with skin viability, and the belief that scarred nasal skin will not redrape satisfactorily. Minimal undermining has also been promoted to reduce the risk of graft shifting. Each deformity presented in this review was managed with an open exposure. There were no problems with skin viability or redraping. Cartilage grafts were required less often, and when needed, were sewn precisely into place. Tissue swelling could take 12 to 18 months to settle. This paper reinforces the need for careful preoperative planning. Potential surgical pitfalls are examined.

Abstract: Can students with learning and attention difficulties in school actually be talented scientists in disguise? This article presents a model that was highly successful in identifying and developing scientific talent in these special students. The factors that contributed to the success of the model were the following: The emphasis was on helping students become creative producers. The model also featured a strong mentoring component that included role-modeling and problem solving within specific scientific domains and provided students with authentic, discovery-based, experiential, advanced level subject matter of the domain. Finally, the alternate means of assessing student achievement focused on a student's performance and the product he or she created, rather than on test scores. Students demonstrated their ability to be competitive, collaborative, and to apply problem-solving skills. These performances resulted in the students’ shifting their identity from loser to winner.

Abstract: How do bacteria stick to a surface? There is still not enough information about to answer this question especially at the molecular level. This question only gives rise to more questions. What is the structure of the true adhesive bacterial polymer? Is only one bacterial polymer or several polymers involved in the adhesion process? What is the role of proteins associated with the bacterial polysaccharides? What type of polymer is produced for the adhesion to hydrophobic surfaces? Is the polymer produced as a response to the surface ? This review is an attempt to summarize the physicochemical aspects of bacterial polymers and their interaction with surfaces. It was tried to give an overview of the literature published in this field. The article is divided into the following sections: first, the forces involved in bacterial adhesion are described. Second, the theoretical approaches to bacterial adhesion are discussed. Third, different fluid conditions are investigated. Fourth, the nature of different bacterial polymers which are important for the interaction with a surface is elaborated. Fifth, the current knowledge about biological polymers at interfaces is shown. And sixth, the role of polymers in the adhesion of bacteria available to date is highlighted.
