    Abstract: The serum concentration of inflammation-associated proteins and several complement components in the cord blood of 215 newborns with and without chorioamnionitis (CAM), who were delivered between 17 and 42 weeks of gestation, were measured. We investigated the relationship of levels of serum proteins to acute, subacute, and chronic CAM, and to subacute necrotizing funisitis (SNF). Complement components C3d, C3, and C4 levels increased in subacute CAM ( P = 0.0002, P = 0.0007, P = 0.0029, respectively), whereas factor B increased in each type of CAM ( P = 0.0001, P = 0.0009, P = 0.0004, respectively). Among the immunoglobulins, IgG levels were unrelated to the presence or type of CAM, IgM levels increased in subacute CAM ( P 〈 0.0001), and IgA levels increased in chronic CAM ( P 〈 0.0001). Among the acute phase reactants (APR), haptoglobin and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels increased in acute ( P 〈 0.0001, P = 0.0022, respectively) and chronic CAM ( P = 0.0035, P = 0.0345, respectively), whereas orosomucoid levels increased in chronic CAM ( P = 0.0003). IL-6 levels increased in acute ( P = 0.0011) and subacute ( P = 0.0475) CAM. C3d ( P = 0.0063), C3 ( P = 0.0289), C4 ( P = 0.0491), and IgM ( P 〈 0.0001) levels were increased in SNF. These findings suggest that the histologic distinction of acute, subacute, and chronic CAM is a useful indicator of the inflammatory mediator status of the infants. The infants with SNF may have ended their initial active inflammatory states, but they still have subacute immune activation.

    Abstract: Changes in the mechanical properties and durability of a nonwoven fabric with repeated hot-press fatiguing treatment depend on the properties of the fiber material and the structure of the nonwoven. Following Part IV, which deals with fiber fineness, in this paper we focus on punching density, which greatly affects the nonwoven struc ture, and we discuss the influence of punching density on the mechanical properties of nonwoven fabrics after hot-press fatiguing cycles. We hypothesize that a nonwoven with greater punching density will have a larger number of fibers reaching perpendic ularly across its width. This will increase fiber entanglement because more fibers will be caught by the needle. In Part IV, we found that a nonwoven fabric with more entangled fibers has a higher tensile breaking strength, so it is natural to believe that a nonwoven with a higher punching density has a higher tensile strength than one with a low punching density. The experimental results show, however, that a nonwoven with too much punching density has a lower tensile strength due to fiber breakage by too much needle punching. Thus, there is an optimum punching density that gives the highest tensile strength. Regarding compressive behavior, a nonwoven fabric with higher punching density has a small compressive strain and high compressive modulus, meaning it is stiffer. We have found that changes in tensile and compressive behaviors with hot-press fatiguing closely relate to nonwoven fiber packing factors.

    Abstract: We set out to find the most suitable design for heat-resistant nonwoven fabrics to be used as components of laminated cushion materials. The changes in mechanical prop erties and durability of a nonwoven fabric subjected to repeated hot-press fatiguing treatments depend on the properties of the fiber material and the structure of the non woven. In this paper, we focus on fiber fineness, one of the material properties, and discuss its influence on the mechanical properties of nonwoven fabrics after hot-press fatiguing. We find that a nonwoven made of fine fibers has a higher tensile breaking strength and a higher tensile modulus than those made of larger diameter fibers. The nonwovens we prepared have the same fabric basis weight with different fiber diam eters. Accordingly, the finer fiber nonwoven has a larger number of component fibers than those of larger diameter fibers, and the degree of fiber entanglement in the finer fiber nonwoven is higher because the number of fibers caught by the needle is greater when the fibers are finer. Tensile breaking strength is proportional to the degree of fiber entanglement, so the finer fiber nonwoven has a higher tensile breaking strength. However, this strength decreases after too many fatiguing treatment cycles, probably due to the deterioration of the fiber material (Nomex). As regards compressive behav ior, the finer fiber nonwoven has a lower compressive strain and a higher modulus than those of the larger diameter fibers. These tensile and compressive properties are closely related to the nonwoven's fiber packing factor.

    Abstract: To develop heat-resistant nonwoven fabrics, nonwovens were subjected to repeated hot-press fatigue, and the mechanical properties of and configurational changes in the fabrics were examined. The mechanical properties of nonwovens depend on raw ma terials, fiber fineness, fiber length, needle punching density (numbers), fiber arrange ment, and structural differences resulting from differences in manufacturing. This paper reports on geometric structural influences on the mechanical properties of non woven fabrics after hot-press fatigue. We prepared two kinds of nonwovens using either the paper-making method or a needle punching machine, and one kind of woven fabric made on a four-ply weaving machine, and we investigated the influences of the fabrics' geometric structures on their compressive behavior. We expected that four-ply woven fabric would show better compressive behavior than the other non woven fabrics because it contains a lot of air. Our investigation showed, however, that the four-ply woven fabric behavior was very similar to that of the paper-like nonwoven fabric, while the needle-punched nonwoven behaved very differently from the others. In particular, we found that the needle-punched nonwoven fabric had good fatigue resistance and recovery properties, as shown by its small increase in compressive mod ulus and small change in compressive strain with fatigue cycles.

    Abstract: To study the mechanism of efficacy of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) adsorption for arte riosclerosis obliterans (ASO), eight ASO patients without indication for bypass surgery underwent LDL apheresis twice a week for 5 weeks and the change in prostaglandin I 2 (PGI 2 ) and thromboxane A 2 (TXA 2 ) due to LDL apheresis was measured. The concentra tion of 6-keto-PGF I ,, a metabolite of PGI 2 , in systemic venous blood significantly increased from 10.4 ± 1.8 to 42.0 ± 10.6 pg/mL (P 〈 0.05) after one session of LDL apheresis, while no significant change of TXB 2 , a metabolite of TXA 2 , was encountered. The ratio of 6-keto-PGF,,,/TXB 2 also rose dramatically from 0.213 ±0.044 to 0.522 ±0.128 (P 〈 0.05) . In five patients, the ischemic clinical symptoms improved and both the concentration of 6-keto-PGF 1α and the ratio of 6-keto-PGF 1α /TXB 2 increased significantly, whereas in three patients there was no effect on clinical symptoms and neither parameter changed. These results suggest that elevated production of PGI 2 from vascular cells due to LDL apheresis might contribute to improvement of ischemic symptoms.

    Abstract: Surgical resection remains a definitive treatment for prostate cancer. Yet, prostate cancer surgery is performed without image guidance for tumor margin, extension beyond the capsule and lymph node positivity, and without verification of other occult metastases in the surgical field. Recently, several imaging systems have been described that exploit near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent light for sensitive, real-time detection of disease pathology intraoperatively. In this study, we describe a high-affinity (9 nM), single nucleophile-containing, small molecule specific for the active site of the enzyme PSMA. We demonstrate production of a tetra-sulfonated heptamethine indocyanine NIR fluorescent derivative of this molecule using a high-yield LC/MS purification strategy. Interestingly, NIR fluorophore conjugation improves affinity over 20-fold, and we provide mechanistic insight into this observation. We describe the preparative production of enzymatically active PSMA using a baculovirus expression system and an adenovirus that co-expresses PSMA and GFP. We demonstrate sensitive and specific in vitro imaging of endogenous and ectopically expressed PSMA in human cells and in vivo imaging of xenograft tumors. We also discuss chemical strategies for improving performance even further. Taken together, this study describes nearly complete preclinical development of an optically based small-molecule contrast agent for image-guided surgery.

    Abstract: Extrusion moulding behaviour, mechanical and morphological properties of thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyester (LCP-A) and copolyesteramide (LCP-B) strands were investigated using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder, tensile testing, x-ray diffraction measurements, and scanning electron microscopic observation. Extrusion pressure and torque of LCP-B strands were larger than those of LCP-A strands under the same extrusion conditions, reflecting a difference in the apparent melt viscosity of the two polymers. The LCP-B strands obtained in this study had more homogeneous diameters, as compared with the LCP-A strands. The irregularity in diameter of the LCP-A strands tended to become smaller with increasing the length-to-diameter ratio (l/D) and output flow rate. The molecular orientation of LCP-B strands rose rapidly with draw ratio and reached almost a plateau at a much lower one, whilst that of the LCP-A strands became slowly higher with draw ratio. The tensile modulus and strength of LCP-B strands increased gradually with a draw ratio, even after the molecular orientation of the strands levelled off. The effect of the draw ratio on the molecular orientation and the mechanical properties of the strands was discussed from a morphological point of view.

    Abstract: The surface geometry of an intracranial stent (ICS) for a cerebral aneurysm is reconstructed by using micro-CT to import computational fluid simulations. The reconstructed stent with STL format is composed of 170,948 triangles with 0.04mm spatial resolutions. The boundary condition of the surface is clear without any reflection effects by X-ray introduced into the stainless steel stent. The computational simulations of blood flow with small implants, such as a stent or coil will be a designable way to control blood flow in/on a cerebral aneurysm and repair the disease. Micro-CT has a possibility of detecting the 3-D geometry of a small implant, such as ICS and may be useful to 3-D reconstruction and integration to computational simulation.
