    Abstract: While previous studies suggest that women have higher anxiety than men regarding COVID-19, underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study tries to explain the mechanisms by gender difference in social interaction based on a theory of social amplification of risk framework (SARF). We surveyed older adults in Japan regarding their anxiety regarding COVID-19, as well as the frequencies of their direct and indirect social interaction in July 2020 ( N = 1,587, aged 78–99 years). To explore the way in which gender and anxiety regarding COVID-19 were mediated by these two types of social interactions, MODEL4 of SPSS’s Process MACRO was applied to the data. We found that older women interacted more directly and indirectly with others than did older men. And, direct social interaction was negatively and related, but indirect social interaction was positively related to older adults’ anxiety regarding COVID-19. Furthermore, direct social interaction was related to older women’s low anxiety regarding COVID-19, whereas indirect social interaction was related to older women’s high anxiety regarding COVID-19. The findings of our study suggest that the degree of anxiety regarding COVID-19 among older women may be dependent upon the types of social interaction they have with others.

    Abstract: Major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCAs) may affect pulmonary hemodynamics significantly in patients with cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Occluding such collateral arteries is expected not only to diminish systemic-to-pulmonary shunt but also to increase pulmonary perfusion via the central pulmonary artery. The authors performed coil embolization of MAPCAs communicating with the central pulmonary artery or its branches in 3 patients aged from three to fifteen years (2: tetralogy of Fallot, 1: pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect). On chest roentgenogram, the cardiac size diminished after embolization in 2 subjects owing probably to decreased systemic-topulmonary blood flow. The pulmonary perfusion scintigram with Tc 99m macroaggregated albumin was performed before and after embolization. Before embolization, multiple segmental or lobar perfusion defects or hypoperfusion areas were observed in all cases. After embolization, however, the scintigrams unexpectedly did not show any improvement. These results suggest that the occlusion of MAPCAs is effective in decreasing systemic-to-pulmonary blood flow but not effective in increasing lung perfusion. The authors speculate that obliterative and irreversible pulmonary vascular damages might have occurred in all cases.

    Abstract: A case of double aortic arch with coarctation of both limbs is described. The patient, a thirteen-year-old girl, demonstrated only the symptoms of coarctation and had no intracardiac anomalies. Discrete coarctation of bilateral limbs distal to the subclavian artery was shown by aortography. Although either double aortic arch or coarctation of the aorta is not so rare, the combination of these two anomalies is quite unusual. This is the third case in the world literature.

    Abstract: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) can be targeted in cancer immunotherapy. A previous study has shown that the chemokine CCL17 and the receptor CCR4 play a role in Treg recruitment in canine urothelial carcinoma. Here, we describe the association of tumor-infiltrating Tregs with CCL17/CCR4 expression in dogs with other carcinomas. In this study, we investigated 23 dogs with mammary carcinoma, 14 dogs with oral squamous cell carcinoma, 16 dogs with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, and 8 healthy control dogs. Immunohistochemistry showed that Foxp3 + Tregs and CCR4 + cells were increased in the tumor tissues of mammary carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and pulmonary adenocarcinoma, when compared with the healthy tissues. The number of CCR4 + cells was associated with that of Foxp3 + Tregs. Double immunofluorescence labeling confirmed that most tumor-infiltrating Foxp3 + Tregs expressed CCR4. In vitro, canine carcinoma cell lines expressed CCL17 mRNA. Quantitative RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction) showed that CCL17 mRNA expression in canine carcinomas was increased approximately 10- to 25-fold relative to that of healthy tissues. These results suggest that the CCL17/CCR4 axis may drive Treg recruitment in a variety of canine carcinomas. CCR4 blockade may be a potential therapeutic option for tumor eradication through Treg depletion.

    Abstract: Regulatory T cells may serve as targets in cancer immunotherapy. A previous study showed that the chemokine CCL17 and the receptor CCR4 play roles in regulatory T cell recruitment in canine urothelial carcinoma. In this article, we show that the BRAF V595E mutation is associated with tumor-produced CCL17 and regulatory T cell infiltration in dogs with urothelial carcinoma. In comparison with healthy dogs, dogs with urothelial carcinoma showed increased CCL17 mRNA expression in the bladder and elevated CCL17 protein concentration in urine. Immunohistochemistry showed increased levels of Foxp3 + regulatory T cells in the tumor tissues of urothelial carcinoma. The density of Foxp3 + regulatory T cells was positively correlated with CCL17 concentration in urine, indicating that CCL17 is involved in regulatory T cell recruitment. Moreover, tumor-infiltrating regulatory T cells and urine CCL17 concentration were associated with poor prognosis in dogs with urothelial carcinoma. The number of tumor-infiltrating regulatory T cells, CCL17 mRNA expression, and urine CCL17 concentration in cases with BRAF V595E mutation were higher than those in cases with wild-type BRAF. In vitro, high CCL17 production was detected in a canine urothelial carcinoma cell line with BRAF V595E mutation but not in an urothelial carcinoma cell line with wild-type BRAF. Dabrafenib, a BRAF inhibitor, decreased CCL17 production in the cell line with BRAF V595E mutation. These results suggest that BRAF V595E mutation induced CCL17 production and contributed to regulatory T cell recruitment in canine urothelial carcinoma.

    Abstract: Older adults were expected to experience a decline in physical activities and an increase in social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We investigated the changes in living conditions of 508 older adults (79.70 years ± 0.88) before (from July to December 2019) and during (in August 2020) the pandemic. We compared the mean score for the same individual instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), frequency of going out, exercise, and social interaction at two-time points. We also examined the influence of living arrangement (living alone or not) on the frequency of exercise and social interaction. Results: The frequency of going out decreased during the pandemic (in 2020); however, there was no significant change in IADL. The frequency of exercise and social interaction increased irrespective of the living arrangement. The frequency of exercise increased more in those living alone. Conclusions: Although older adults refrained from going out, they compensated for the risks of inactivity in daily life by increasing or maintaining their frequency of exercise and social interactions. The view that “older adults have a poor ability to accommodate the lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic” may be a stereotypical assumption.

    Abstract: To assess the determinants of target lesion revascularization (TLR) after drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty for de novo small coronary artery lesions. Methods This retrospective study enrolled consecutive lesions from patients that were in a stable condition and had undergone successful DCB treatment for de novo small coronary artery lesions. The study endpoint was TLR and major adverse cardiac events at 12 months. Results A total of 68 patients with 83 lesions were enrolled in the study. Of these, 11 (13.3%) lesions required TLR. Mean ± SD pre-dilatation balloon diameters were similar in the non-TLR (2.33 ± 0.72 mm) and TLR (2.18 ± 0.36 mm) groups. A comparison of the two groups showed that post/pre-lumen area ratio during pre-dilatation (%) by plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA) was significantly and negatively associated with TLR and the optimal cut-off point was 170%. Cox proportional hazard and multivariate regression analyses showed that post/pre-lumen area ratio was the only independent predictor of TLR (hazard ratio 0.9318; 95% confidence interval 0.9001, 0.9645). Conclusion Greater pre-dilatation using POBA, assessed as the post/pre-lumen area ratio, may be independently associated with a lower 12-month TLR rate in patients undergoing DCB angioplasty for de novo small coronary lesions.
