    Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has triggered a global public health crisis. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs. However, the effect of PPIs on the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients remains unclear. Methods: All COVID-19 patients admitted to the Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital from February 2020 to April 2020 were retrospectively collected. Patients were divided into PPIs and non-PPIs groups. Logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the effects of PPIs on the outcomes of COVID-19 patients, including transfer to intensive care unit, mechanical ventilation, and death. Subgroup analyses were performed according to the presence of upper gastrointestinal symptoms potentially associated with acid and the routes, types, median total dosage, and duration of PPIs. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: Of the 3024 COVID-19 patients included, 694 and 2330 were in PPIs and non-PPIs groups, respectively. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that PPIs significantly increased the risk of reaching the composite endpoint in COVID-19 patients (OR = 10.23, 95% CI = 6.90–15.16, p  〈  0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities, other medications, and severe/critical COVID-19, PPIs were independently associated with an increased risk of reaching the composite endpoint (OR = 7.00, 95% CI = 4.57–10.71, p  〈  0.001). This association remained significant in patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and those who received an intravenous omeprazole alone, but not those who received oral lansoprazole or rabeprazole alone. It was not influenced by dosage or duration of PPIs. Conclusion: The use of intravenous PPIs alone during hospitalization may be associated with worse clinical outcome in COVID-19 patients.

    Abstract: The glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene/AA2024 hybrid composite (short for Al/Gf/PP laminate) was prepared by hot pressing with anodized 2024-T3 aluminum alloy as the skin and thermoplastic glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene core as a substitute of thermosetting glass fiber-reinforced polymer (based on epoxy) in order to increase the productivity and reduce the production costs during manufacturing procedure. The effect of peel ply (release cloth) and cooling rate on the laminate was investigated elaborately in this work. The orientation of glass fiber is mainly influenced by the peel ply structure, resulting in the resin’s overflow during hot press. Moreover, different cooling rates due to various cooling methods significantly affected both the degree of crystallization of the matrix and deformation of the metal skin during the curing process. Finally, a new peel ply structure was adopted to prevent the fiber from spilling during hot press process, while bubbles were allowed to flow out normally along with partial resin. Finally, a novel cooling method to reduce the degree of polypropylene crystallization and control metal deformation was proposed.

    Abstract: In response to this special issue, concerned with methods and measurements, a comprehensive review of the last 5 years of qualitative research was conducted in the top five journals that primarily publish articles pertaining to the hospitality industry. A total of 197 articles were read and analyzed for this review with a focus on the state of trustworthiness in the contemporary hospitality literature. An outline of the methods, techniques, and successes are presented in this review as are recommendations for scholars, journal editors, journal reviewers, and our partners in industry who use qualitative data for many reasons including but not limited to employee satisfaction surveys, market focus groups, and employee exit interviews. In addition, the relatively novel and nascent ideas regarding empirical rigor such as transparency and replicability are introduced to the hospitality field.

    Abstract: Heart, liver, and kidney, which are known as the essential organs for metabolism, possess the unique ability to regulate the proliferation function of the body against injury. Silibinin (SB), a natural polyphenolic flavonoid extracted from traditional herb Silybum marianum L., has been used to protect hepatocytes. Whether SB can regulate mitochondrial fission in normal cells and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we showed that SB markedly promoted cell proliferation by facilitating G1/S transition via activating dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1), which in turn mediated mitochondrial fission in these normal cells. SB dose-dependently increased the mitochondrial mass, mtDNA copy number, cellular adenosine triphosphate production, mitochondrial membrane potential, and reactive oxygen species in normal cells. Furthermore, SB dose-dependently increased the expression of Drp1. Blocking Drp1 abolished SB-induced mitochondrial fission. In conclusion, we demonstrate that SB promotes cell proliferation through facilitating G1/S transition by activating Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fission. This study suggests that SB is a potentially useful herbal derivative for the daily prevention of various diseases caused by impaired mitochondrial fission.

    Abstract: The smoker’s paradox refers to an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes after smoking cessation in patients with coronary artery disease. The mechanisms involved are controversial. The present study evaluated the effect of delay in smoking cessation on clinical outcomes among patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) stratified by diabetes mellitus (DM). Patients included in this study came from an established Fu Wai hospital PCI cohort. Smoking behavior was recorded; clinical end points included all-cause mortality and repeat revascularization. The analyses were based on 8489 smokers who underwent PCI. Patients with and without DM were examined separately. Multivariable model analysis suggested that smoking cessation was associated with significant lower all-cause mortality both for non-DM and DM patients. The smoking paradox was observed for revascularization. However, the increased risk of repeat revascularization correlated with quitting time among non-DM patients only, especially if they stopped smoking late ( 〉 90 days) after their index procedure (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.40; 95% CI: 2.45-4.72). In conclusion, smoking cessation is associated with a lower mortality rate for PCI patients. However, the relative benefit on repeated revascularization was only observed among non-DM patients if they quit smoking early.

    Abstract: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of drug coated balloon-only strategy (DCB-only) in the treatment of de novo left main coronary artery (LM) bifurcation lesions. 85 patients were enrolled in this study and classified them into two groups: DCB-only group (n = 36) and DES group (n = 49). The MLD of target vessels was measured before and immediately after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and late luminal loss (LLL) were also calculated. And the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) was also evaluated. Compared with that before PCI, the MLD of target lesions significantly increased immediately after PCI ( P  〈  .05) and no MACE was recorded during the perioperative period both in two groups. The MLD at follow-up was significantly higher than that before both DCB and DES treatment. Compared with the DES group, the MLD of the DCB group was smaller than immediately after PCI in the LM and LAD ( P  〈  .05). The LLL of LAD in DCB group was smaller than that in DES group ( P  〈  .05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of luminal restenosis at the target lesion between the two groups, and no significant difference in the incidence of MACE ( P  〉  .05). The use of DCB-only to treat de novo LM bifurcation lesions is effective and relatively safe, which provides new ideas for the treatment of LM coronary artery bifurcation lesions in the future.

    Abstract: Classical gardens offer ample cultural and natural landscapes for visitors to appreciate. Taking the tourist gaze as a theoretical lens, this study assumes a netnographic approach and conducts narrative analysis on travel blogs to explore visitors’ experiences at Chinese classical gardens. Findings revealed key domains of the gaze object (i.e., macro-level structural design and micro-level elements) and the way of gaze (i.e., spatial and temporal), which formed the Chinese gaze in the tourism context. Results further showed how gaze contributed to Yijing development, a unique Chinese aesthetic concept. This study enriches the tourism and aesthetics literature by positioning a classical aesthetic concept (Yijing) within a modern tourism practice (gaze). Practical implications for tourism development and destination marketing are provided.

    Abstract: Collision prediction is a fundamental operation for planning motion in dynamic environments. Existing methods usually exploit complex behavior models or use dynamic constraints in collision prediction. However, these methods all assume simple geometry, such as a disc, which significantly limits their applicability. This paper proposes a new approach that advances collision prediction beyond disc robots and handles arbitrary polygons and articulated objects. Our new tool predicts collision by assuming that obstacles are adversarial. Comparing to an online motion planner that replans periodically at fixed time intervals and a planner that approximates obstacle with discs, our experimental results provide strong evidence that the new method significantly reduces the number of replans while maintaining a higher success rate of finding a valid path. Our geometric-based collision prediction method provides a tool for handling highly complex shapes and provides an approach complementary to those methods that consider behavior and dynamic constraints of objects with simple shapes.

    Abstract: To report two cases of polymicrobial keratitis following corneal collagen cross-linking for keratoconus and to review the literature. Methods Retrospective case note and literature review. Results The first case involved a 27-year-old male who presented with amebic corneal ulcers 3 days after the collagen cross-linking procedure. Some gram-negative (gram-ve) cocci were found upon staining, and cysts were observed by confocal microscopy at 7 days after surgery. Acanthamoeba infection mixed with gram-ve organisms was diagnosed. In the second case, a 14-year male developed Staphylococcus aureus corneal infection with anterior chamber empyema 3 days after the collagen cross-linking procedure for keratoconus. Occasional gram-positive (gram + ve) cocci and gram-ve bacilli were observed under a microscope. The mixed keratitis in the two patients resolved after systemic and topical antibiotic therapy, but the infection ultimately resulted in corneal scarring. Follow-up keratoplasty was needed to improve vision acuity in both patients. Conclusion Although ultraviolet irradiation and the reactive oxygen released by riboflavin during collagen cross-linking have bactericidal effects, a lack of a corneal epithelial barrier, bandage contact lens usage, perioperative hygiene, and an abnormal immune state are risk factors for infectious keratitis after collagen cross-linking. Perioperative management of collagen cross-linking is important to prevent infection.
