    Abstract: We hypothesized that activation of the central histaminergic system is required for neuroprotection induced by hypoxic preconditioning. Wild-type (WT) and histidine decarboxylase knockout (HDC-KO) mice were preconditioned by 3 hours of hypoxia (8% O 2 ) and, 48 hours later, subjected to 30 minutes of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion, followed by 24 hours of reperfusion. Hypoxic preconditioning improved neurologic function and decreased infarct volume in WT or HDC-KO mice treated with histamine, but not in HDC-KO or WT mice treated with α-fluoromethylhistidine (α-FMH, an inhibitor of HDC). Laser-Doppler flowmetry analysis showed that hypoxic preconditioning ameliorated cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the periphery of the MCA territory during ischemia in WT mice but not in HDC-KO mice. Histamine decreased in the cortex of WT mice after 2, 3, and 4 hours of hypoxia, and HDC activity increased after 3 hours of hypoxia. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA and protein expressions showed a greater increase after hypoxia than those in HDC-KO or α-FMH-treated WT mice. In addition, the VEGF receptor-2 antagonist SU1498 prevented the protective effect of hypoxic preconditioning in infarct volume and reversed increased peripheral CBF in WT mice. Therefore, endogenous histamine is an essential mediator of hypoxic preconditioning. It may function by enhancing hypoxia-induced VEGF expression.

    Abstract: The mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics used in aerospace are vulnerable to degradation under thermo-oxidative aging conditions. However, it is hard to establish a mechanical property prediction model for carbon fiber-reinforced plastics from thermo-oxidative aging mechanism point of view since the thermo-oxidative aging degradation processes are very complex. A mathematical model was proposed based on the theory of stochastic processes for predicting mechanical property degradation of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics under thermo-oxidative aging conditions in the present work. However, the predicted values calculated by the “random process model” were not in good agreement with experimental data. And then a “modified random process model” (namely a wider random process model) was established through Box–Cox transformation for random process model. The verification of the evaluation model showed that the modified random process model can nicely describe the mechanical performance degradation of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics with the increasing of aging time under certain aging temperatures. As the modified random process model was established without limiting the reinforced structure of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, the described method provides an opportunity to rapidly predict the mechanical properties and the lifetime of any carbon fiber-reinforced plastics by testing the mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics before and after aging for a short period of time.

    Abstract: The straightening process for a linear guideway with particular cross-section shape is normally conducted by the three-point pressure bending method. However, the single-step straightening process (SSSP) of a long/extra-long linear guideway may make the workpiece from a single-curvature curve into a more complex shape. Due to these limitations of SSSP, a quantitative control strategy for the multi-step straightening process (MSSP) of a long/extra-long linear guideway is proposed in this paper based on the straightening principle of SSSP. Firstly, the predictive models for straightening stroke and helix angle after unloading with respect to SSSP are developed based on the elasto-plastic theory and curvature integral model. Depending on the established analytical model for SSSP, the MSSP is then mathematically modelled to obtain corresponding straightening parameters considering feeding process, clamping process and straightening process. Besides, the finite element method has been applied to validate the developed mathematical model for the MSSP. Taking the approach of a linear guideway as an example, the experimental results have also shown that the proposed control strategy is appropriate for the MSSP of a long/extra-long linear guideway.

    Abstract: To investigate whether the combination of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) with hemoperfusion (HP) could improve the clearance rate of middle and large molecule uremic toxins so as to improve the quality of life of MHD patients and reduce their mortality rate. Methods This study was a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial. 100 MHD patients were selected and then randomly divided into two groups after four weeks of run-in period. Group 1 received HD alone 2 times a week and the combined treatment of HD with HP (HD+HP) once a week, whereas Group 2 was given HD alone 3 times a week. This study was followed up for a mean of 2 years. The primary outcome was the death of patients. Secondary end points included normal clinical data, leptin, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), β 2 microglobulin (β 2 -MG), immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the index of dimensions of Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36 Chinese Edition). Results At the end of the two-year observation, the serum concentration of leptin, hsCRP, iPTH, IL-6, β 2 -MG and TNF-α, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), cardiothoracic ratio, left ventricular mass index (LVMI), the EPO doses and the types of antihypertensive drugs used were lower with Group 1 than with Group 2 (p 〈 0.05); Group 1 had higher hemoglobin (Hb), ejection fraction (EF), and body mass index (BMI) (p 〈 0.05). No statistical difference between the two groups was observed in terms of serum albumin, serum iron (SI), total iron binding capacity (TIBC), cardiac output (CO), Kt/V, early/atrial mitral inflow velocities (E/A) (p 〉 0.05). Besides, the SF-36 indicated that the total score of overall dimentions of Group 1 was higher than Group 2 (p 〈 0.05) and the quality of life of Group 1 was evidently better than Group 2. The Kaplan-Meier Survival Curves for the 2-year observation period showed that patients in Group 1 had obvious survival advantage while Log-rank test results showed p 〈 0.05. No serious adverse incidents occurred during the HD+HP treatment. Conclusions HD+HP was superior to HD in regularly eliminating middle and large molecule uremic toxins accumulated in the body. These findings suggest a potential role for HD+HP in the treatment to improve the quality of life and survival rate of MHD patients.

    Abstract: In order to reduce the run-up distance for deflagration-to-detonation transition process, and increase the operating frequency of a pulse detonation rocket engine, a specific experimental system was designed. A tube closed at one end and open at the other end was employed as the detonation tube. The detonable mixtures were injected into the detonation tube periodically in the middle of the tube through a rotary valve and ignited near the open end. Detonation waves can be obtained when the deflagration waves propagate to the closed end. Varieties of experiments were carried out in the pulse detonation rocket engine system utilizing ethylene as fuel and oxygen-enriched air as oxidizer. Fully developed detonation waves were obtained, and a steady operating frequency of 200 Hz was successfully achieved. Higher operating frequency can be expected when the supplying flow rate is improved or smaller tube is utilized.

    Abstract: Cirrhotic patients without overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) have associated with widespread neuro-psychological impairment. Liver transplantation can restore metabolic abnormalities but the mechanisms are unclear. We investigate brain functional networks after transplantation using resting-state funtional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Twenty-six cirrhotic patients without overt HE completed neuro-psychological assessment before and 6 to 12 months after transplantation, and compared with 35 healthy controls. Five major functional brain networks, default mode (DMN), dorsal attention (DAN), executive control (ECN), salience (SN), and primary networks (PN), were assessed. Nodal efficiency and strength in different functional networks were weighed and their interaction metrics displayed. Granger causal analysis between pretransplantation and posttransplantation was performed. Before transplantation, the intrafunctional connectivity was decreased in DMN, DAN, ECN, and SN. After transplantation, cognitive functions improved with increased functional connectivity. The interaction metrics among large-scale networks in patients became similar to healthy controls. The increase in PN affected the decrease in SN, while the increase in DAN forced a decrease in DMN. There was a bidirectional balance between DMN and SN. Dynamic disruptions and reconstruction in intrinsic large-scale networks are associated with parallel patterns of cognitive information processing deficits and recovery. Remapping of SN, DMN, and DAN is essential for restoring cognition after transplantation.

    Abstract: Tastin might be involved in tumorigenesis, but its role in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been adequately explored. This work aimed to examine tastin’s role in NSCLC and to explore the underlying mechanism. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), Gene Expression Database of Normal and Tumor tissues (GENT), and Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases were used. Four GEO datasets (GSE81089, GSE40419, GSE74706, and GSE19188) containing gene expression data for NSCLC and normal tissue samples were analyzed for tastin mRNA expression. Tastin expression levels in different tissues were compared using the GENT website. TCGA biolinks were used to download gene expression quantification ( n = 594) and overall survival data ( n = 535). In total, 30 lung adenocarcinoma and 25 lung squamous cell carcinoma cases were enrolled. In addition, four-week-old male BALB/c nude mice ( n = 9/group) were used to establish xenograft mouse models. Furthermore, cultured HEK293T, A549, and NCI-H226 cells assessed. Immunoblot, hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) staining, immunohistochemistry, real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, lentiviral transduction, and MTT, colony formation, wound healing, and Transwell assays were carried out. Tastin expression levels were markedly increased in NSCLC tumor tissue specimens and correlated with a poorer prognosis. Silencing of tastin inhibited the proliferative and migratory abilities of NSCLC cells. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that tastin interacts with ErbB4. The PI3K/AKT and ERK1/2 downstream pathways were suppressed in tastin-deficient cells. In conclusion, tastin might be involved in NSCLC growth and invasion and is a potential therapeutic target in NSCLC.

    Abstract: The applied straightening moment and the springback after unloading with respect to the straightening process of rectangle-section metal bars have a direct influence on the straightening accuracy and efficiency. In this article, an asymmetrical hardening material model is first proposed to describe the stress–strain curves considering the asymmetrical features of yield stress and plastic hardening stage in tension and compression, and it is also compared with the traditional linear hardening material model. To accurately evaluate the elasto-plastic bending deformation and the springback in the straightening process, an analytical model for the loading and unloading moments is then established. The strain and stress distributions in elastic and plastic regions during the straightening process are also discussed in this article. Finally, the straightening experiments of rectangle-section metal bars under different heat-treated conditions are conducted on the ROSE-JZ50 straightening machine with displacement sensors, force sensors and strain gauges to validate the proposed analytical straightening model.

    Abstract: Teacher self-efficacy plays an important role in special education; yet, the literature on the measurement of teacher self-efficacy in this field is limited. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale with a sample of Chinese special education teachers ( N = 401, 24.19% male). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the Chinese special educational version of the Teacher's Sense of Efficacy Scale (CS-TSES), modified from the Asian model by Ruan, J., Nie, Y., Hong, J., Monobe, G., Zheng, G., Kambara, H., & You, S. (2015). Cross-cultural validation of teachers’ sense of efficacy scale in three Asian countries. Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 33(8), 769-779, showed an excellent fit. Additionally, correlations were observed between the results of the CS-TSES and both the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Satisfaction with Life Scale, providing criterion-related validity. In sum, the findings indicated that the TSES is applicable to special education teachers in the Chinese context.
