Abstract: A novel chemical degumming process for ramie fiber was developed, using sodium carbonate solution with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as an auxiliary surfactant and sodium triphosphate. Optimum performance for the degumming of ramie fiber was obtained with sodium carbonate concentration 30 g·L —1 , PVA concentration 2.2 g·L — 1 , sodium triphosphate concentration 6.0 g·L — 1 and temperature 90 °C. The tensile properties of the ramie fibers degummed using Na 2 CO 3 are comparable with fibers degummed using sodium hydroxide. This new mild, rapid degumming technique for ramie fiber has a potential application in industry, and is less environmentally polluting than the traditional method. The ramie fibers before and after degumming were characterized by FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract: In magnesium-based seawater exhaust gas clean system, the desulfurization by-product, magnesium sulfite (MgSO 3 ), has a negative impact on the ecological environment, which needs to be treated to make harmless. Due to the limited space on board, the aeration oxidation method is used to convert it to magnesium sulfate. Because of the variable size, shape and flow field of aeration tank, it is difficult and expensive to design and verify the oxidation efficiency of the aeration tank by experimental method. In this work, in order to predict the oxidation efficiency accurately, RFlow, a computational fluid dynamics software, was used to analyze the flow field and MgSO 3 oxidation reaction in aeration tank. The subdomain technology was adopted for physics modeling and mesh generation of the aeration tank, and the total number of meshes was 285,000. The multi-phase flow field model was set up using the multi-fluid model and dispersive k-ε turbulence model. Under the given initial conditions, the predicted oxidation efficiency was 94.2%. Compared with the results of the actual ship test, the prediction model for MgSO 3 oxidation efficiency of the aeration tank is reliable.

Abstract: The desulfurization efficiency is a major parameter of magnesium-based seawater exhaust gas clean system, which is one of the important means to control the sulfur dioxide emission from marine diesel engines. In this work, the RFlow, a computational fluid dynamics software, was used to analyze the flow field and sulfur dioxide absorption rate in the desulfurization tower of magnesium-based seawater exhaust gas clean system. The subdomain technology was applied for physics modeling and mesh generation of the desulfurization tower, and total number of the mesh is 2.25 million. The flow field model was set up by coupling the multi-fluid model with the dispersive k-ε turbulence model. Based on flow field model, the prediction model for desulfurization efficiency of magnesium-based seawater exhaust gas clean system was programmed in user-defined module of the RFlow software, according to the two-film theory and sulfur dioxide absorption reaction equations. The simulation results predicted a desulfurization efficiency of 97.9%, which agrees well with the practical result. In order to study the effect of gas and liquid flow rate on the desulfurization efficiency, the computational fluid dynamics prediction model was applied. And the verification tests were conducted on a container vessel. Comparing the predicted results with the experimental data, the maximum error is less than 2%. It is proved that the prediction model is reliable and useful for the magnesium-based seawater exhaust gas clean system.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the joint monitoring of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in vertebral canal decompression surgery for acute spinal cord injury. Methods Twenty-four patients, who were admitted to the hospital for the surgical treatment of spinal cord injury with SEP and MEP monitoring, were assigned to the intraoperative monitoring group (group I). In addition, 24 patients who were admitted to the hospital for the surgical treatment of spinal cord injury without SEP or MEP monitoring were assigned to the control group (group C). Results In group I, there were significant changes before and after decompression surgery in the P40 latency and amplitude, and in the latency of MEP in the abductor hallucis brevis (AHB), in patients with improved spinal nerve function following surgery. In contrast, there were no significant differences in the P40 latency or amplitude, or the latency of MEP in the AHB, in patients who showed no improvement after surgery. Conclusion In vertebral canal decompression surgery for acute spinal cord injury, the application of joint MEP and SEP monitoring can timely reflect changes in spinal cord function.

Abstract: Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) with circular section is a very efficient composite component bearing vertical loads, which takes advantage of the synergy of steel tube and concrete to fully develop the strengths of both materials. To promote the application of circular CFST columns in multi-story buildings or medium-span bridge piers with improved economic efficiency, circular CFSTs using thin-walled steel tubes were studied in this paper. 8 specimens were designed and tested to assess their seismic performance under constant axial compression and cyclic lateral loads. The key test parameters include axial compression ratio, diameter-to-thickness ratio of steel tube, as well as stiffening scheme. The effectiveness of two steel plate stiffeners (longitudinal stiffener, binding stiffener) at the potential plastic hinges of thin-walled circular CFST columns was verified and discussed. Although all specimens failed in a manner characterized by significant local buckling of steel tubes, they still performed a relatively ductile behavior with the ductility coefficients generally exceeding 4.0, and the ultimate drift ratios exceeding 1/40. The steel plate stiffeners did not achieve the expected enhancement in strength and ductility, due to the premature fracture in the steel tube which may be caused by the damage in the welding heat-affected zone. Based on the test results, a numerical model and a simplified hysteretic model were established to predict the seismic responses of the thin-walled circular CFST columns.

Abstract: This study applies a bootstrap panel Granger causality test to determine the relationship between urbanisation and economic growth for China. We find that the patterns of interaction between urbanisation and economic growth vary across different regions. The empirical results show that in urbanisation of the northern coastal region and most of the inland region Granger causes economic growth, whereas economic growth does not have a significant effect on urbanisation, except in the southern coastal region and the inland region. One-fourth of China’s provinces, primarily in the southern coastal region, do not show a Granger causality relationship between urbanisation and economic growth. This finding indicates that urbanisation has promoted economic growth by expanding demand and that economic growth’s effect on urbanisation is restricted by administrative intervention rather than market mechanisms. Thus, the findings for three-fourths of the provinces in China conform to the urbanised economy theory. These results may help regional governments undergoing urbanisation to create fair economic growth policies.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of temperature on the biodegradation and settlement properties of municipal solid waste by using bioreactors. Three kinds of controlled temperature were performed during the biodegradation test; the variation of weight, leachate and biogas production were carefully monitored. The degradation test indicated that more leachate leaked out owing to the external compression and polymer hydrolysis reaction in the aerobic phase, which could lead to the decrease of biodegradation rate in the anaerobic phase. A proper temperature range in favour of enhancing biodegradation of refuse was obtained, which ranged from 22 °C to 45 °C. Finally, an empirical equation of biodegradation ratio was proposed, which incorporated the temperature effect. In the end, the validation of this proposed model is verified, and is proved to be reasonable for predicting degradation velocity in landfills.
