Abstract: A new aurone, (2 Z)-2-[(4′-hydroxyphenyl) methylene]-6-methoxy-7-prenyl-3(2 H)-benzofurane (1), together with 6 known compounds (2-7), was isolated from the EtOAc-soluble extract of the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods. All compounds were evaluated for in vitro inhibitory activity against a human colon cancer cell line (SW620). Compounds 1 to 3 showed moderate cytotoxicity against the SW620 cells with IC 50 values ranging from 24.31 to 28.72 μM. Among these compounds, 1 showed higher cytotoxicity against SW620 cells with an IC 50 value of 24.31 μM.

Abstract: Radiodensity measured by computed tomography (CT) in Hounsfield Units (HU) is emerging as a clinical tool for detecting perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) inflammation. In the present study, we hypothesized that PVAT radiodensity might predict the risk of descending thoracic aorta atherosclerosis. A total of 73 subjects who underwent CT angiography to investigate aortic disease were retrospectively analyzed. PVAT radiodensity, aortic complex plaque (ACP), mean plaque-burden score (MPBS), and plaque density were measured, and the association between them was analyzed. Perivascular adipose tissue radiodensity (HU) in patients with different aortic plaques grades (grade 1, 2, 3, and 4) were −93.71 ± 2.50, −93.63 ± 3.93, −90.24 ± 4.49, and −89.90 ± 5.18, respectively, and the difference was significant (P = .010). In the regression analysis, PVAT radiodensity was an independent predictor of ACP, with an OR of 1.263. In the linear analysis, PVAT radiodensity was an independent predictor of MPBS, with a β-coefficient of .073. In the univariate analysis, only the PVAT radiodensity was significantly associated with plaque density, with a β-coefficient of −1.666. In conclusion, PVAT density was independently related to descending thoracic aorta atherosclerosis.

Abstract: To explore the molecular pathogenesis of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), we investigated the proliferation and apoptosis of parathyroid cells in a rabbit model of diet-induced PHPT. A total of 120 adult Chinese rabbits were randomly divided into normal diet (Ca:P, 1:0.7) group (control group) or a high-phosphate diet (Ca:P, 1:7) group (experimental group). The thyroid and parathyroid complexes were harvested for 1-month interval from month 1 to month 6. The expression of proliferation markers, including proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and cyclin-D1, and B cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in thyroid and parathyroid tissues. Apoptosis was quantified by DNA-fragment terminal labeling. Our results demonstrated that parathyroid cells in the experimental group started proliferating from the end of the 2nd month, the expression of PCNA, Bcl-2, and cyclin-D1 were significantly higher in the PHPT group than those of the control group (p 〈 0.05). Furthermore, the apoptosis index (AI) was positively correlated with the glandular cell count and expression of PCNA in the 6th month in the PHPT group. Overall, our results suggested that excessive proliferation and apoptosis of parathyroid cells may contribute to the pathogenesis of PHPT through PCNA-related, Bcl-2-related, and cyclin-D1-related pathways.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to validate a novel pictorial-based Longshi Scale for evaluating a patient’s disability by healthcare professionals and non-professionals. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Rehabilitation departments from a grade A, class 3 public hospital, a grade B, class 2 public hospital, and a private hospital and seven community rehabilitation centers. Subjects: A total of 618 patients and 251 patients with functional disabilities were recruited in a two-phase study, respectively. Main measures: Outcome measure: pictorial scale of activities of daily living (ADLs, Longshi Scale). Reference measure: Barthel Index. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to analyze the validity of Longshi Scale against Barthel Index. Results: In phase 1 study, from March 2016 to August 2016, the results demonstrated that the Longshi Scale was both reliable and valid (intraclass correlation coefficient based on two-way random effect (ICC 2,1 ) = 0.877–0.974 for intra-rater reliability; ICC 2,1 = 0.928–0.979; κ = 0.679–1.000 for inter-rater reliability; intraclass correlation coefficient based on one-way random effect (ICC 1,1 ) = 0.921–0.984 for test–retest reliability and Spearman correlation coefficient = 0.836–0.899). In the second phase, in March 2018, results further demonstrated that the Longshi Scale had good inter-rater and intra-rater reliability among healthcare professionals and non-professionals including therapists, interns, and personal care aids (ICC 1,1 = 0.822–0.882 on Day 1; ICC 1,1 = 0.842–0.899 on Day 7 for inter-rater reliability). In addition, the Longshi Scale decreased assessment time significantly, compared with the Barthel Index assessment ( P 〈 0.01). Conclusion: The Longshi Scale could potentially provide an efficient way for healthcare professionals and non-professionals who may have minimal training to assess the ADLs of functionally disabled patients.

Abstract: Summary Bisexual men (men who have sex with men and women) are potential epidemiological bridges responsible for the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections from men who have sex with men only to the heterosexual population. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of syphilis and HIV and the factors associated with syphilis infection among men who have sex with men and women and men who have sex with men only from Shijiazhuang, China. In 2011–2013, a cross-sectional cohort of 427 men who have sex with men was recruited by a snowball sampling method and tested for syphilis and HIV. Chi square and logistic regression were performed to identify syphilis risk factors. Among the 427 men who have sex with men, 71 (16.6%) cases were syphilis-positive and 16 cases (3.7%) were HIV-positive. The proportions of men who have sex with men and women and men who have sex with men only in the total sample were 31.4% and 68.6%, respectively. Men who have sex with men and women exhibited double the syphilis prevalence of men who have sex with men only and were more likely to practice insertive anal sex. Higher education level, being married, having more male partners, and both receptive and insertive anal sex roles were associated with syphilis among men who have sex with men and women. Residing in suburban areas, being married, being HIV positive, and an absence of desire to change sexual orientation were associated with syphilis among men who have sex with men only. Therefore, men who have sex with men and women represent an important sub-group in the syphilis epidemic and further interventions should be developed to reduce risk among different sub-sets of men who have sex with men.

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the dosimetric effects of using individualized silicone rubber (SR) bolus on the target area and organs at risk (OARs) during postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT), as well as evaluate skin acute radiation dermatitis (ARD). Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 30 patients with breast cancer. Each patient was prepared with an individualized SR bolus of 3 mm thickness. Fan-beam computed tomography (FBCT) was performed at the first and second fractions, and then once a week for a total of 5 times. Dosimetric metrics such as homogeneity index (HI), conformity index (CI), skin dose (SD), and OARs including the heart, lungs, and spinal cord were compared between the original plan and the FBCTs. The acute side effects were recorded. Results: In targets' dosimetric metrics, there were no significant differences in D mean and V 105% between planning computed tomography (CT) and actual treatments ( P 〉 .05), while the differences in D 95% , V 95% , HI, and CI were statistically significant ( P 〈 .05). In OARs, there were no significant differences between the D mean , V 5 , and V 20 of the affected lung, V 5 of the heart and D max of the spinal cord ( P 〉 .05) except the V 30 of affected lung, which was slightly lower than the planning CT ( P 〈 .05). In SD, both D max and D mean in actual treatments were increased than plan A, and the difference was statistically significant ( P 〈 .05), while the skin-V 20 and skin-V 30 has no difference. Among the 30 patients, only one patient had no skin ARD, and 5 patients developed ARD of grade 2, while the remaining 24 patients were grade 1. Conclusion: The OR bolus showed good anastomoses and high interfraction reproducibility with the chest wall, and did not cause deformation during irradiation. It ensured accurate dose delivery of the target and OARs during the treatment, which may increase SD by over 101%. In this study, no cases of grade 3 skin ARD were observed. However, the potential of using OR bolus to reduce grade 1 and 2 skin ARD warrants further investigation with a larger sample size.

Abstract: How to obtain the “truth” of land surface parameter as reference value to validate the remote sensing retrieved parameter in heterogeneous scene and coarse-resolution pixel is one of the most challenging topics in environmental studies. In this paper, a distributed sensor network system named CPP-WSN was established to capture the spatial and temporal variation of land surface parameters at coarse-resolution satellite pixel scale around the Huailai Remote Sensing Station, which locates in the North China Plain. The system consists of three subnetworks that are RadNet, SoilNet, and VegeNet. Time series observations of typical land surface parameters, including UVR, PAR, SWR, LWR, albedo, and land surface temperature (LST) from RadNet, multilayer soil moisture and soil temperature from SoilNet, and fraction of vegetation cover (FVC), clumping index (CI), and leaf area index (LAI) from VegeNet, have been obtained and shared on the web. Compared with traditional single-point measurement, the “true” reference value of coarse pixel is obtained by averaging or representativeness-weighted averaging the multipoint measurements acquired using the sensor network. The preliminary applications, which validate several remote sensing products with CPP-WSN data, demonstrate that a high quality ground “truth” dataset has been available for remote sensing as well as other applications.

Abstract: Survivin is an anti-apoptosis protein that may be associated with the development of eosinophilia; the latter is associated with the pathogenesis of many immune disorders. Here we report that less apoptotic eosinophils (Eos) were induced in those isolated from mice suffering from food allergy (FA) than those from naive mice after treating with cisplatin in vitro. Exposure to cisplatin induced more Fas ligand (FasL) expression in Eos isolated from naive mice than in those of FA mouse. Survivin was detected in the intestinal tissue extracts in much higher amounts in the FA group than in the naive group. Immunohistochemistry showed that epithelial cells were the major source of survivin in the intestine. Exposure to IL-4 or IL-13 up-regulated the expression of survivin in intestinal epithelial cells. Survivin interfered with the expression of FasL in Eos. Inhibition of survivin attenuated the eosinophilia-related inflammation in the intestine. In conclusion, intestinal epithelial cell-produced survivin induced defects in apoptosis in Eos to contribute to eosinophilia in the intestine. Inhibition of survivin can suppress the eosinophilia-related intestinal inflammation. The data suggest that survivin may be a novel target for the treatment of FA.

Abstract: Existing reports have demonstrated that miR-199a-3p plays a role as a tumor suppressor in a variety of human cancers. This study aims to further validate the expression of miR-199a-3p in HCC and to explore its underlying mechanisms by using multiple data sets. Chip data or sequencing data and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were integrated to assess the expression of miR-199a-3p in HCC. The potential targets and transcription factor regulatory network of miR-199a-3p in HCC were determined and possible biological mechanism of miR-199a-3p was analyzed with bioinformatics methods. In the results, miR-199a-3p expression was significantly lower in HCC tissues compared to normal tissues according to chip data or sequencing data and qRT-PCR. Moreover, 455 targets of miR-199a-3p were confirmed, and these genes were involved in the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, pathways in cancer, and focal adhesions. LAMA4 was considered a key target of miR-199a-3p. In CMTCN, 11 co-regulatory pairs, 3 TF-FFLs, and 2 composite-FFLs were constructed. In conclusion, miR-199a-3p was down regulated in HCC and LAMA4 may be a potential target of miR-199a-3p in HCC.

Abstract: Single small subcortical infarct (SSSI) is generally considered to have a fair outcome. However, early neurological deterioration (END), a relatively unfavorable clinical course occurring during the acute phase of infarction, is not uncommon. Aims The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between lesion patterns detected by diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and the presence of END in patients with acute SSSI in the perforator territory of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). Methods Three hundred twelve patients with acute SSSI in the perforator territory of MCA were prospectively recruited from Jinling Hospital between January 2010 and May 2013. Acute DWI lesion patterns were classified as proximal SSSI (pSSSI) or distal SSSI (dSSSI) patterns, according to the relationship between lesion location and the parent artery. Neurological deficits were evaluated using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) at admission and continued over the following 72 h 1–3 times a day. END was defined as an increase in NIHSS score ⩾2 points during the first 72 h after admission. Results Of the total 312 patients, the pSSSI pattern was found in 139 (44·55%) patients and the dSSSI pattern in 173 (55·45%) patients. Statistical analysis suggested that the indicators for small-artery disease (hypertension and leukoaraiosis) and atherosclerosis (diabetes mellitus and cerebral atherosclerosis) significantly differed according to lesion patterns ( P 〈 0·05). During hospitalization, 88 (28·21%) patients experienced END. Univariate analysis revealed that female sex ( P = 0·004), pSSSI pattern ( P 〈 0·001), initial NIHSS ( P = 0·001), lesion diameter ( P = 0·005), ipsilateral large-artery stenosis ( P = 0·008), and concomitant intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis ( P = 0·021) were significantly associated with END. After adjusting for confounding factors, pSSSI pattern was an independent predictor of END (OR 1·871, 95% CI 1·095–3·198, P = 0·022). In the further subgroup analysis of patients with different etiologies, pSSSI pattern was found to be independently associated with END in patients with large-artery atherosclerosis (OR 3·593, 95% CI 1·268–11·057, P = 0·026) and in patients with small-artery disease (OR 2·523, 95% CI 1·121–5·676, P = 0·025), but not in patients with cardioembolism (OR 0·854, 95% CI 0·147–4·953, P = 0·861). Conclusions pSSSI pattern was closely related to END in acute SSSI caused by large-artery atherosclerosis and small-artery disease in the perforator territory of the MCA.
