    Abstract: The procoagulant effect of microparticles (MPs) contributes to hypercoagulability-induced thrombosis. We provide preliminary findings of the MPs-Activated Clotting Time (MPs-ACT) assay to determine the procoagulant activity of MPs. MPs-rich plasma was obtained and recalcified. Changes in plasma viscoelasticity were evaluated and the time to the peak viscoelastic changes was defined as the MPs-ACT. MPs concentration was measured by flow cytometry. Coagulation products produced during plasma clotting were identified by fibrin and fibrinopeptide A. MPs were prepared in vitro and added to standard plasma to simulate pathological samples. In addition, reproducibility and sensitivity were evaluated. We confirmed the linear relationship between MPs-ACT and MP concentrations. Dynamic changes in fibrin production were depicted. We simulated the correlation between MPs-ACT and standard plasma containing MPs prepared in vitro. The reproducibility of high-value and low-value samples was 6.0% and 10.8%, respectively. MPs-ACT sensitively detected hypercoagulable samples from patients with pre-eclampsia, hip fractures, and lung tumors. MPs-ACT largely reflects the procoagulant effect of MPs. MPs-ACT sensitively and rapidly detects hypercoagulability with MPs-rich plasma. It may be promising for the diagnosis of hypercoagulable states induced by MPs.

    Abstract: This prospective, dose-escalation phase I study evaluated the safety and efficacy of intraperitoneal bevacizumab in managing refractory malignant ascites and explored the recommended dose of bevacizumab for further study. Methods Patients with refractory malignant ascites were enrolled. Bevacizumab was intraperitoneal administered weekly at an initial dose of 2.5 mg/kg, with dose escalation to 5 and 7.5 mg/kg performed following the standard “3 + 3” rule. The total duration of treatment was 2 or 3 weeks. Results Between December 2013 and September 2014, 13 patients (2.5 mg/kg, n = 4; 5 mg/kg, n = 3; 7.5 mg/kg, n = 6) with refractory malignant ascites were enrolled. Bevacizumab was well tolerated, and the most common treatment-related adverse events were abdominal pain (5/13), abdominal distension (2/13), and fatigue (2/13). The dose-limiting toxicity at 7.5 mg/kg was grade 3 bowel obstruction (1/13). The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was not reached. The overall response and disease control rates were 7.7 and 61.5%, respectively. Conclusions Intraperitoneal bevacizumab safe and well tolerated for treating malignant ascites, and the MTD was not reached at doses of 2.5 to 7.5 mg/kg. Intraperitoneal bevacizumab at 7.5 mg/kg weekly is recommended for further study to verify its anti-tumor activity. Trial registration: Clinical Trials NCT01852409.

    Abstract: The benefit of mechanical thrombectomy for an acute ischemic stroke involving M2 segment occlusion is not clear, especially when performed with second-generation thrombectomy devices. Method We reviewed the literature to investigate clinical outcomes and the rates of recanalization, symptomatic intracerebral hematoma, and mortality in mechanical thrombectomy performed using second-generation thrombectomy devices. We compared the outcomes between patients treated for M2 and M1 occlusions. Results Seven studies involving 805 patients with M2 thrombectomy were included in this meta-analysis. The functional independence rate 90 days after thrombectomy (modified Rankin Scale 0–2) was 59.3% (OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.74–1.88). The recanalization rate (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 0–2) was 84.16% (OR 2.32, 95% CI 2.08–2.29). The symptomatic intracerebral hematoma rate was 4.9% (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.03–1.09). The mortality was 7.7% (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.03–1.13). The outcomes were better in patients with M2 occlusion than in those with M1 occlusion. In a subgroup analysis, we found that among patients with hypertension, mechanical thrombectomy achieved better functional outcomes and recanalization in M2 occlusion than M1 occlusion. Conclusion Mechanical thrombectomy performed with second-generation thrombectomy devices for M2 occlusion can provide a good functional outcome as well as satisfying recanalization. Moreover, there was no significant difference in the symptomatic intracerebral hematoma and mortality rates, suggesting this procedure is as safe in M2 occlusion as in M1 occlusion.

    Abstract: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a zoonotic pathogen that is a significant public health problem. Detecting HEV relies mainly on conventional PCR, which is time-consuming and requires sophisticated instruments and trained staff. We aimed to establish a reverse-transcription (RT)-recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay (RT-RPA) combined with a lateral flow strip (LFS; RT-RPA-LFS) to rapidly detect HEV RNA in human and rabbit samples. With the optimal reaction conditions (37°C for 30 min), our assay detected as few as 1.0 × 10 2 copies/mL of HEV and showed no cross-reactivity with other hepatitis viruses. We tested 28 human samples (4 fecal and 24 serum samples) and 360 rabbit samples (180 fecal and 180 serum samples) with our RT-RPA-LFS assay and compared our assay to an RT-qPCR method. There was no significant difference ( p  〉  0.05) in the test results between the 2 assays. Our RT-RPA-LFS assay detected both HEV3 and HEV4 genotypes. Our rapid, sensitive, and specific RT-RPA-LFS assay for the detection of HEV may provide a useful detection tool for limited-resource areas.

    Abstract: After its global popularity and commercial success, Genshin Impact, a Chinese-developed, Japanese anime-style mobile game, provokes online discussions on whether such a game of cultural hybridity exemplifies “authentic Chineseness.” Based on online ethnography in the fan communities, this article investigates a two-year debate on whether GI should be considered a symbol of China’s “cultural export” to other countries. It reveals that players construct multiple meanings of authentic Chineseness, including GI’s integration of Chinese cultural elements, telling “the China story,” and its patriotism and “political correctness” in China. This article contributes to the project of de-westernizing cultural studies by revealing how the meanings of cultural authenticity are constructed in a Global South context. Moreover, players situate “Chineseness” in the power relations among China, Japan, and the West, and associate cultural appropriation in the increasing hybridization process with global soft power competition. It reveals that the construction of cultural authenticity as a relational concept is shaped by others defined in a contingent, contextual, and multilateral way, and that the construction process is conditioned by domestic and international power relations, thus contributing to the project of going beyond dichotomous thinking in cultural studies.

    Abstract: A patellar tendon injury is a common injury in sports. The optimal time to start training after an acute, proximal patellar enthesis injury is still unclear. Hypothesis: The time to start training after an acute, proximal patellar enthesis injury significantly affects healing of the patellar tendon 4 weeks after the injury. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: The left hindlimbs of 35 mature female rabbits were randomly assigned to 5 injury groups including a 4-week natural healing group (NH4W) and 4 training groups that started low-intensity training at 24 hours (POST24), 48 hours (POST48), 72 hours (POST72), and 96 hours (POST96) after an acute patellar tendon injury, with 7 limbs in each group. The right hindlimbs of the NH4W group were used as a control group (CON). An acute, proximal patellar enthesis injury was created in all injury groups. The training groups underwent low-intensity quadriceps training for 2 hours per day and 3 days per week for 4 weeks. Histological and radiographic data were collected and analyzed. Results: The cell densities of the training groups were significantly lower than those of the NH4W and CON groups ( P = .01). The fibrocartilage zone was significantly thicker in the POST24, POST48, and POST72 groups compared with the CON and NH4W groups and was the thickest in the POST24 group ( P = .01). The bone surface to bone volume ratio was significantly higher in all the injury groups compared with the CON group and in the POST24 group compared with the other groups ( P = .01). Trabecular thickness was significantly lower in all the injury groups compared with the CON group and in the POST24 group compared with the other groups ( P = .01). Conclusion: Resting without training in the first 96 hours after an acute patellar tendon enthesis injury resulted in the best recovery of cell density in the tendon enthesis 4 weeks after the injury. Starting training 96 hours after the injury resulted in the best recovery of fibrocartilage zone thickness. Starting training 48 to 96 hours after the injury resulted in the best healing of the bone component of the attachment site 4 weeks after the injury. The optimal time to start training may be longer than 96 hours after an acute patellar tendon enthesis injury for the best overall healing of the tendon enthesis 4 weeks after the injury. Clinical Relevance: A rest of a minimal 72 hours may be needed for the best healing of a patellar tendon enthesis after an acute injury. Future studies are needed to determine the optimal time to start training after an acute patellar tendon injury.

    Abstract: Identifying organizational factors affecting venous thromboembolism (VTE) incidence and variations between hospitals. Methods From a 2019 survey of VTE and live births in 113 hospitals, organizational factors: (hospital type, characteristics, live birth number), resource availability: (D-dimer, B-scan ultrasonography of lower extremity veins, computed tomographic pulmonary angiography [CTPA], and competency: [risk assessment, use of anticoagulants and patient education] , data were collected and the associations, weighted by live birth number, analyzed. Results Of 113 hospitals in China, 770,828 live births and 526 cases of VTE (68.2 per 100,000 live births) were reported. Nine hospitals lacked B-scan ultrasonography of lower extremity veins and 22 lacked CTPA. Prevalence rates of VTE rates were higher in general hospitals (Odds ratio [OR] = 4.251, 95% CI: 3.373-5.357), hospitals with live births 〈 10,000 (OR = 1.650-2.193), and hospitals without B-scan ultrasonography (OR = 1.661, 95% CI: 1.096-2.518). Hospitals implementing patient education, had a lower risk of VTE (OR = 0.296-0.374), and VTE rate decreased with the annual increase in live births. Conclusions Improved hospital resource availability and competency, especially patient education, is vital for reducing VTE-related maternal mortality and morbidity risk.

    Abstract: This study explored the different influences of technical indicators on match results in different stages of football league play. Sample data from 2400 Chinese Super League matches during 2010–2019 were divided into three season stages according to round sequence: the early stage (1–10 rounds), the middle stage (11–20 rounds), and the late stage (21–30 rounds). A two-way, fixed-effect ordered logit model was then constructed and used, together with Fisher’s combination test, to compare regression results. The study results showed that: (1) when controlling for other variables, as the league progresses, an increase in goals will gradually increase the possibility of better match results, and this increase shows significant differences between the early and late stages ( p  〈  0.05). The possibility of better match results by an extra goal is 0.075 times higher in the late stage than the early stage. (2) While maintaining all control variables, as the season progresses, the increase in red card penalties will gradually multiply the probability of worse match outcomes, and this increase is also significantly different between the early and middle stages and between the early and late stages ( p  〈  0.05). The possibility of worse match outcomes due to the presence of an extra red card is 0.377 times higher in the middle stage and 0.476 times higher in the late stage than the early stage.

    Abstract: Cable-strut structures are flexible structures which are very sensitive to their shape variation. Addition of actuators in selected members of cable-strut structures provides an efficient way to control the structural shape, thus enhances the structural performance. Although a large number of research studies have been performed to achieve shape control via linear force method, it has been proved that nonlinear force method is more accurate due to the existence of nonlinearity characters in cable-strut structures. The aim of this article is proposing an approach based on the nonlinear force method to change the shape of cable-strut structures under external load with respect to different control targets. The formulas and calculation procedure of structure’s nonlinear response to external load and length variation of members are established based on nonlinear force method. Then, solving strategy for determining the minimum required number of actuators and testing the feasibility for arrangement plan of actuators is provided for different control targets. Two numerical cases are demonstrated using the proposed approach to obtain the structural behavior before and after the control process. The effectiveness of the algorithm can be verified through numerical results.
