Abstract: In many developing countries, urban growth is characterised by the emergence of informal housing at the periphery. Nevertheless, there is little evidence based on data from informal land markets and, in general, studies focusing on such markets often neglect environmental factors. Therefore, to contribute to these research gaps, this article aims to enhance our understanding of land markets in informal land parcels and their relationship to environmental amenities, by providing empirical evidence from Mexico City. The article estimates a hedonic pricing model using robust ordinary least squares with a SHAC (Spatial Heteroskedasticity and Autocorrelation Consistent) inference, including structural, environmental, neighbourhood and accessibility features. Results provide empirical insights regarding the way this land market behaves in the peri-urban area. Our findings reveal that informal land parcel purchasers are willing to pay for basic services such as access to piped water, proximity to schools and accessibility features such as being close to city centre, motorways and underground stations. Although a positive relationship between land price and distance to the nearest forest or Protected Natural Area is highlighted, it is low, meaning that individuals are largely ambivalent about environmental amenities. Therefore, the problem of irregular settlements could be approached from two different angles. Firstly, informal land buyers will not desist from invading and modifying natural areas without a comprehensive urban and environmental policy, oriented towards changing the perception of green areas as potential urbanisation opportunities. Secondly, public policy needs to solve the housing supply crisis, considering the characteristics presented here.

Abstract: This paper investigates the spatial distribution of employment in the region of Ile-de-France in 1978 and 1997. Exploratory spatial data analysis is used to identify employment centres and a sectoral analysis of the central business district (CBD) and sub-centres is performed. The results highlight a process of suburbanisation of employment in Ile-de-France between 1978 and 1997. A more polarised space emerges in 1997 than in 1978, with several employment centres specialised in different activities. Moreover, even if the spatial influence of the CBD declines over the study period, the CBD maintains its economic leadership by concentrating a large variety of high-order producer services.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to study the evolution of GDP disparities among 138 European regions over the period from 1980 to 1995. Regional per capitaGDPcross-sectional distribution is characterized by means of nonparametric estimations of density functions, and the growth process is modeled as a first-order stationary Markov chain. Spatial effects are then introduced within the Markov chain framework using regional conditioning and spatial Markov chains. The results of the analysis indicate the persistence of regional disparities, a progressive bias toward a poverty trap, and the importance of geography in the convergence process.

Abstract: This article evaluates whether Airbnb rentals affect the rents in the private rental sector in eight cities in France. We estimate a hedonic equation for each city on individual data for apartments, allowing for heteroscedasticity and spatial error autocorrelation of unknown forms and using a large variety of structural and contextual characteristics of the apartments. We show that the density of Airbnb rentals puts upward pressure on rents in Lyon, Montpellier, and Paris, whereas it has no significant effect in other cities. If we restrict the analysis to the professional business of Airbnb rentals, which we define as the lodgings owned by an investor who rents either several “entire home” dwellings (regardless of the number of days) or an “entire home” dwelling for more than 120 days a year, we find a greater effect, which concerns only the two largest cities of France, that is, Marseille and Paris. When we focus on new tenancy agreements, the impact is even higher and concerns Paris, Marseille, and Montpellier. The impact of the Airbnb activity on rents is shown to increase with the proportion of owner-occupiers and decrease with hotel density, both in Montpellier and Paris. However, the share of second homes leads to contrasting effects.

Abstract: This article draws on data collected by local rental observatories in 12 French urban units in 2015 to analyze the spatial dimension of hedonic rental prices in the private rental market through (i) the spatial heterogeneity between urban units and (ii) the wide variety of contextual and locational characteristics (socio-economic, environmental (dis)amenity, and accessibility) and flexible specifications to capture their potential non-linear influence on rent. Based on a joint test of equality of coefficients across all urban units, we find that hedonic prices differ for 75% of the characteristics, thereby justifying a detailed analysis of heterogeneity. Lyon, Nice, and Paris taken individually are the urban units with the most specific valuations of housing characteristics and socio-economic characteristics. Our analysis reveals that housing characteristics, median income, and distance to the center are clearly the variables with the most heterogeneous effects on hedonic prices.

Abstract: European Union (EU) is very attractive for foreign direct investment (FDI) in services and policy makers should know the reasons explaining investment location choices of foreign firms in order to attract them. This article explores FDI location determinants in service functions in the EU-28. Studies dealing with such an issue stay generally focused on the location of service functions in the manufacturing sector. Our assumption is that the location determinants of service functions may differ according to sectors. So, we propose to study whether the location pattern of some service functions is sector independent, whereas it is sector dependent for other service functions. Using a database developed by Ernst and Young, we estimate mixed logit models on foreign firms’ location choices. Our contribution is to consider simultaneously three sectors and eight service functions for 271 European regions, during the period 1997 to 2011. Our fundamental findings are that service functions location choices are different according to sectors and that location determinants vary according to the service function considered. The only variables significant for all service functions are agglomeration variables. However, our contribution is to distinguish between different types of agglomeration (regional, sectorial, functional, and group agglomeration) and to show that some agglomeration variables act differently according to service functions.

Abstract: China has experienced fast industrialization and long-lasting economic growth since the end of the 1970s. However, the manufacturing sector is not evenly distributed over the Chinese territory, which resulted in an unequal economic development across regions. The aim of this article is to measure whether Kaldor’s engine of growth hypothesis holds true in the case of the Chinese regions over 1996–2006. We believe this is an appropriate model for this country given that manufacturing still represents around half of the Chinese gross domestic product. In order to obtain more reliable results, our approach pays attention to the endogeneity of our explanatory variables, heteroscedasticity, and spillovers effects across regional economies by means of spatial econometric techniques and the spatial heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation consistent estimator.

Abstract: The authors show that spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity matter in the estimation of the β-convergence process among 138 European regions over the 1980 to 1995 period. Using spatial econometrics tools, the authors detect both spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity in the form of structural instability across spatial convergence clubs. The estimation of the appropriate spatial regimes spatial error model shows that the convergence process is different across regimes. The authors also estimate a strongly significant spatial spillover effect: the average growth rate of per capita GDP of a given region is positively affected by the average growth rate of neighboring regions.
