    Abstract: In this study, jujube polysaccharide (JP) was extracted from Ziziphus jujuba cv. Jinsixiaozao and sulfated JP (SJP) was prepared. The optimum preparation conditions were as follows: reaction temperature 75°C, reaction time 1 h, ratio of chlorosulfonic acid-to-pyridine ( V CSA / V Pyr ) 1. The degree of substitution of SJP was 0.664 ± 0.014. JP and SJP were typical heteropolysaccharides, which were composed of rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose, and galactose, but the molar ratio of monosaccharides was different. Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that JP was sulfated successfully. Compared with JP, the molecular weight of SJP increased to 3.17 × 10 5  Da, its water solubility increased significantly, and its viscosity decreased significantly. When the microstructure of SJP was examined, it was found that the surface of the polysaccharides became loose and porous after sulfation. SJP had a higher hydroxyl radical scavenging activity than the unsulfated polysaccharide. Moreover, sulfation enhanced the antibacterial activity of the polysaccharides against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Therefore, sulfation is an effective way to improve the biological activity of the polysaccharide, and SJP can be used as a potential antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in the field of food and medicine.

    Abstract: This paper studies the delay partial synchronization for mutual delay-coupled Boolean networks. First, the mutual delay-coupled Boolean network model is presented. Second, some necessary and sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the delay partial synchronization of the mutual delay-coupled Boolean networks. The upper bound of synchronization time is obtained. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the efficiency of the theoretical analysis.

    Abstract: After the onset of stroke, a series of progressive and degenerative reactions, including inflammation, is activated, which leads to cell death. We recently reported that human placenta-derived multipotent stem cells (hPDMCs) process potent anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we examined the protective effect of hPDMC transplants in a rodent model of stroke. Adult male Sprague–Dawley rats were anesthetized. hPDMCs labeled with a vital dye of fluorescing microparticles, DiI, or vehicle were transplanted into three cortical areas adjacent to the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). Five minutes after grafting, the right MCA was transiently occluded for 60 min. Stroke animals receiving hPDMCs showed a significant behavioral improvement and reduction in lesion volume examined by T2-weighted images 4 days poststroke. Brain tissues were collected 1 day later. Human-specific marker HuNu immunoreactivity and DiI fluorescence were found at the hPDMC graft sites, suggesting the survival of hPDMCs in host brain. Grafting of hPDMCs suppressed IBA1 immunoreactivity and deramification of IBA1+ cells in the perilesioned area, suggesting activation of microglia was attenuated by the transplants. Taken together, our data indicate that hPDMC transplantation reduced cortical lesions and behavioral deficits in adult stroke rats, and these cells could serve as a unique anti-inflammatory reservoir for the treatment of ischemic brain injury.

    Abstract: Long non-coding RNA 01534 (LINC01534) is highly expressed in the tissues of patients with osteoarthritis (OA). This study investigated the mechanism of LINC01534 on abnormal metabolic dysfunction in OA chondrocytes induced by interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Methods The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to determine the expressions of LINC01534, aggrecan, collagen II, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) in OA cartilage tissue or OA chondrocyte model induced by IL-1β. The expressions of aggrecan and collagen II in the chondrocyte were detected by Western blot. The levels of tumor necrosis factor–α (TNF-α), IL-8, IL-6, MMP-13, MMP-9, MMP-3, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in chondrocyte were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbernt assay. Bioinformatics, dual luciferin gene reporting, RNA pulldown, and Northern blot were used to determine the interaction between LINC01534 and miR-140-5p. Results The results showed that LINC01534 was upregulated in both OA cartilage tissue and OA chondrocyte model. In addition, silencing LINC01534 significantly alleviated the inhibitory effect of IL-1β on expressions of aggrecan and collagen II in chondrocytes, and significantly downregulated the expression of matrix metalloproteinases in IL-1β-induced chondrocytes. Meanwhile, silencing LINC01534 also significantly inhibited the productions of proinflammatory factors NO, PGE2, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8 in the IL-1β-induced chondrocytes. Furthermore, miR-140-5p was confirmed to be a direct target of LINC01534. More importantly, inhibition of miR-140-5p significantly reversed the inhibitory effect of silencing LINC01534 on abnormal matrix degradation in the IL-1β-induced chondrocyte model of OA. Conclusion Therefore, LINC01534 could promote the abnormal matrix degradation and inflammatory response of OA chondrocytes through the targeted binding of miR-140-5p.

    Abstract: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of mutations in the tumor suppressor gene FBXW7 for clinical outcomes in colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods Between January 2000 and December 2009, FBXW7 mutations in tumor tissues from 1,519 CRC patients at Taipei Veterans General Hospital were assessed using a MassArray system. We compared the clinicopathological variables and prognosis between the wild-type and mutant tumor tissue groups. Results FBXW7 mutations were present in 114/1,519 CRC patients (7.5%). In stage I/II CRC patients, mutant FBXW7 was more common than wild-type FBXW7 (62.3% vs. 50.8%). CRC patients with FBXW7 mutations did not differ significantly in their 5-year overall survival (OS). Stage I/II CRC patients with FBXW7 mutations had lower OS, but this difference was not significant (71.6% vs. 78.2%). Among FBXW7 tumors, S582L was the most frequent mutation type (19.3%), followed by R465H (16.6%), R505C (14.9%) and R479Q (14.9%). Subgroup analysis of FBXW7 mutants showed that R465H/R465C/R479Q had better 5-year OS than other mutant types (76.9% vs. 56.0%; p=0.012). Conclusions There was no strong association between patient prognosis and FBXW7 mutations in our large-scale study.

    Abstract: This study employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the relative cost efficiency of 49 international tourist hotels in Taiwan. The study uses five different measures: overall efficiency (OE), allocative efficiency (AE), technical efficiency (TE), scale efficiency (SE) and pure technical efficiency (PTE). Applying efficiency measures derived from the DEA estimation, hotel efficiency determinants are evaluated using the Tobit regression model. A bootstrapping technique is applied to overcome the interdependency problem of the DEA efficiency scores adopted in the regression analysis. The empirical results demonstrate that the international tourist hotel industry in Taiwan is inefficient, with most efficiency losses attributable to technical inefficiencies, of which scale inefficiencies are the primary cause – the scale of operations of international tourist hotels in Taiwan being too small to enable the cost-savings associated with larger-scale operations. The Tobit regression results indicate that the proportion of foreign individual travellers (FIT), online transaction function (WEB) and franchising (HOTELTYPE) are related to a better performance of international tourist hotels in Taiwan. The number of years a hotel has been operating (AGE) is not significantly related to any of the efficiency measures.

    Abstract: To investigate the clinical results of treating Kummell’s Disease by using mineralized collagen modified polymethyl methacrylate bone cement, 23 cases (23 vertebras) who sustained Kummell’s Disease treated with mineralized collagen modified polymethyl methacrylate bone cement from July 2017 to February 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. The visual analogue scale, vertebral body height, Cobb angle, CT values pre-operation and post-operation as well as incidence of complications were observed. All the patients were successfully followed up with an average period of 11.3 months (ranging from 6 to 12 months). The patients could ambulate on the second day after the operation. The visual analogue scale scores significantly decreased from two days after the operation to the last follow-up compared with that before the operation ( p  〈  0.05); the average vertebral height and local Cobb angle had significant recovery ( p  〈  0.05); the CT value of the treated vertebra significantly increased compared with that before the operation ( p  〈  0.05). Bone cement leakage occurred in one case, anterior edge leakage occurred in one case, and no clinical symptoms caused by bone cement leakage occurred. No re-fracture of the treated vertebral body or adjacent vertebral bodies were observed in the follow-ups. With good osteogenic activity and degradable absorption characteristics, mineralized collagen was compounded with the existing polymethyl methacrylate bone cement to reduce its strength in the vertebral body and enhance biocompatibility, the incidence of adjacent vertebral fractures and re-fractures within the injured vertebrae is significantly reduced, and good clinical results are obtained, which is worthy of popularization.

    Abstract: The goal was better understanding of the motivational factors of volunteers in non-profit sport organizations. The roles of two factors provided by supervisors to their subordinates were examined: autonomy support, i.e., the encouragement of self-initiation and emphasis on choice rather than control, and structure, i.e., the introduction of order, definite procedures, and rules. 489 sport volunteers (289 men, 200 women; M age = 31.2 yr., SD = 7.4) were administered questionnaires assessing their perceived autonomy support, structure, and motivation. Regression analysis indicated that perceived autonomy support predicted motivation. Structure also mediated the effect of perceived autonomy support on motivation. Supervisors of sport organizations should provide adequate structure for their volunteers.

    Abstract: In view of the problems of low accuracy, small rotational angle, and large impact caused by flexure joints during the deployment process, an integrated flexure revolute (FR) joint for folding mechanisms was designed. The design was based on the method of compliance and stiffness ellipsoids, using a compliant dyad building block as its flexible unit. Using the single-point synthesis method, the parameterized model of the flexible unit was established to achieve a reasonable allocation of flexibility in different directions. Based on the single-parameter error analysis, two error models were established to evaluate the designed flexure joint. The rotational stiffness, the translational stiffness, and the maximum rotational angle of the joints were analyzed by nonlinear finite element analyses. The rotational angle of one joint can reach 25.5° in one direction. The rotational angle of the series FR joint can achieve 50° in one direction. Experiments on single and series flexure joints were carried out to verify the correctness of the design and analysis of the flexure joint.

    Abstract: To explore the clinical value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma by comparing with enhanced computed tomography. Methods: This retrospective study was performed on 62 patients with pathologically confirmed medullary thyroid carcinoma. All patients underwent ultrasound and enhanced computed tomography examinations before surgery. The findings of the pathologic examination of resected specimens were considered as gold standard and were compared with the results of these 2 methods. Results: There were 73 medullary thyroid carcinoma lesions and 29 benign lesions in 62 patients. In all, 55 of 73 medullary thyroid carcinoma lesions and 27 of 29 benign lesions were correctly diagnosed by ultrasound; and 45 of 73 medullary thyroid carcinoma lesions and 24 of 29 benign lesions were correctly diagnosed by enhanced computed tomography. The accuracy of ultrasound and enhanced computed tomography was 80.4% and 67.6%, respectively. There was significant difference between 2 methods ( P 〈 .05). Conclusions: Ultrasound can be used to observe the location, number, size, shape, border, internal echo, calcification, and blood flow of the lesion. It is a convenient, inexpensive, and nonradiative method with higher accuracy than enhanced computed tomography.
