    Abstract: The present study determined whether gene transfer of human copper/zinc superoxide dismutase-1 (Cu/Zn SOD-1) prevented the autoregulatory impairment of CBF induced by subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). After application of recombinant adenovirus (100 μL of 1 × 10 10 pfu/mL, intracisternally) encoding human Cu/Zn SOD-1 3 days before experiments, Cu/Zn SOD-1 activity significantly increased in association with increase in Cu/Zn SOD-1 mRNA and protein expression in the cerebral vasculature of both sham-operated and SAH rats as determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry, and SAH-induced increase in superoxide anion was markedly reduced in accordance with increased nitric oxide production. In line with these findings, rats that received human Cu/Zn SOD-1 therapy showed the prominent restoration of blunted vasodilation of the pial artery in response to calcitonin gene-related peptide and levcromakalim, and the recovery of impaired autoregulatory vasodilation in response to acute hypotension, thereby leading to significant restoration of CBF autoregulation. These results provide a rational basis for application of Cu/Zn SOD-1 gene therapy for protection of the impairment of autoregulatory CBF during the acute stage of SAH.

    Abstract: The amount of amyloid detectable in islets varies, and is not always correlated with degree of β-cell loss. It has been hypothesized that islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) aggregation causes β-cell dysfunction. In this study, we investigated the relationship between IAPP expression and glucose homeostasis in pancreatectomized patients. Human pancreatic head tissues were collected from 46 pancreatic tumor patients. We divided the diabetic cases into two groups, patients with higher IAPP–expressing islets (DM-H) and patients with lower IAPP–expressing islets (DM-L), and compared both groups to patients with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). Interestingly, oral glucose tolerance test analyses showed that DM-L patients had significantly higher glucose levels and lower C-peptide levels than DM-H patients. Furthermore, the DM-H group showed a relative β-cell volume similar to that of the NGT group, as well as a significantly higher relative β-cell volume than the DM-L group. The DM-L group was significantly higher than the DM-H group, not only in the rates of replication and apoptosis, but also in the nuclear C/EBP homologous protein and the ratio of oligomer to IAPP. Thus, IAPP expression may not be an indicator of cell death induction. IAPP, including oligomer, may be an important determinant in the fate of islet β-cells.     Abstract: Background: The age- and sex-associated changes of brain development are unclear and controversial. Several previous studies showed conflicting results of a specific pattern of cerebral glucose metabolism or no differences of cerebral glucose metabolism in association with normal aging process and sex. Purpose: To investigate the effects of age and sex on changes in cerebral glucose metabolism in healthy subjects using fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) brain positron emission tomography (PET) and statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis. Material and Methods: Seventy-eight healthy subjects (32 males, mean age 46.6±18.2 years; 46 females, mean age 40.6±19.8 years) underwent F-18 FDG brain PET. Using SPM, age- and sex-associated changes in cerebral glucose metabolism were investigated. Results: In males, a negative correlation existed in several gray matter areas, including the right temporopolar (Brodmann area [BA] 38), right orbitofrontal (BA 47), left orbitofrontal gyrus (BA 10), left dorsolateral frontal gyrus (BA 8), and left insula (BA 13) areas. A positive relationship existed in the left claustrum and left thalamus. In females, negative changes existed in the left caudate body, left temporopolar area (BA 38), right orbitofrontal gyri (BA 47 and BA 10), and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (BA 46). A positive association was demonstrated in the left subthalamic nucleus and the left superior frontal gyrus. In white matter, an age-associated decrease in FDG uptake in males was shown in the left insula, and increased FDG uptake was found in the left corpus callosum. The female group had an age-associated negative correlation of FDG uptake only in the right corpus callosum. Conclusion: Using SPM, we found not only similar areas of brain, but also sex-specific cerebral areas of age-associated changes of FDG uptake.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of restaurant brand personality on customer's emotions (positive and negative), customer satisfaction, and brand loyalty using structural equation models. The study also explores the applicability of the five-factor model of brand personality scales to the restaurant industry. Empirical data were gathered from 475 diners at five properties of a chain restaurant via survey questionnaires. This study confirms five brand personality dimensions in the restaurant industry. Also, the study findings suggest that customers' emotions play the dominant role in explaining satisfaction and brand loyalty. Marketers would gain much by continuously monitoring restaurant customers' perceptions of restaurant brand personality.

    Abstract: Background: The etiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is uncertain and multifactorial. Recently, regional brain volume differences have been reported in the pathogenesis of AIS. Purpose: To examine cerebral glucose metabolism using 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) brain positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with AIS and in gender-matched healthy control subjects. Material and Methods: Twenty-six right-handed AIS patients (six male, 20 female; mean age 14.6±2.22 years, range 11–18 years) were prospectively recruited for this study. Fourteen young adults (three male, 11 female; mean age 27±1.54 years, range 25–29 years) were included as a control group. Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) was used to determine cerebral glucose metabolism. Statistical probabilistic anatomical mapping (SPAM) was used to investigate the metabolic differences between AIS and normal control subjects with respect to previously reported brain areas. Results: SPM analysis showed no voxels with differing cerebral glucose metabolism in AIS patients. SPAM analysis revealed no significant differences between AIS and normal control subjects. Conclusion: SPM and SPAM analyses showed no statistically significant differences in cerebral glucose metabolism between AIS and normal control subjects. These results may suggest that there is no relationship between AIS and brain abnormalities.

    Abstract: The comet 27 P/Crommelin was discovered in 1457 and since then observed six times up to 1956, so its average period is 27.79 years. According to Korean ancient annals, however, comet 27 P/Crommelin was first observed in B.C. 44 and was observed 16 times up to 1457. We traced the records with a period of about 28 years, compiled a list of them and showed that all those records are concerned with the comet 27 P/Crommelin. According to extrapolation of the brightness, the comet 27 P/Crommelin might be one of the brightest comets observed in human history, so ancient people could easily observe this comet with the naked eye. We examined the parallel records in Chinese history and concluded that the Korean historians might have added more detail to their reports by referring to Chinese records.

    Abstract: Data aggregation techniques have been proposed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to address the problems presented by the limited resources of sensor nodes. The provision of efficient data aggregation to preserve data privacy is a challenging issue in WSNs. Some existing data aggregation methods for preserving data privacy are CPDA, SMART, the Twin-Key based method, and GP2S. These methods, however, have two limitations. First, the communication cost for network construction is considerably high. Second, they do not support data integrity. There are two methods for supporting data integrity, iCPDA and iPDA. But they have high communication cost due to additional integrity checking messages. To resolve this problem, we propose a novel Hilbert-curve based data aggregation scheme that enforces data privacy and data integrity for WSNs. To minimize communication cost, we utilize a tree-based network structure for constructing networks and aggregating data. To preserve data privacy, we make use of both a seed exchange algorithm and Hilbert-curve based data encryption. To support data integrity, we use an integrity checking algorithm based on the PIR technique by directly communicating between parent and child nodes. Finally, through a performance analysis, we show that our scheme outperforms the existing methods in terms of both energy efficiency and privacy preservation.

    Abstract: Ginger ( Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is one of the most commonly used medicinal plants and is extensively used for the treatment of arthritic patients in Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) due to its various pharmacological properties. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of ginger on rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly focusing on the regulation of Th1, Th2, and Th17 cytokines and the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) release in mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and primary synovial fibroblasts. RA was induced in male DBA/1J mice via immunization with type II collagen (CII). A ginger extract was prepared in water. The ginger extract (100 and 200 mg/kg) or Mobic (50 mg/kg), as a reference drug, was orally administered to CIA mice once daily for 14 days after arthritis induction. Primary fibroblasts were isolated from the synovial tissues of osteoarthritis patients and then were stimulated with IL-1β and treated with the ginger extract at different concentrations. IL-4, IFN- γ, and IL-17 levels were measured in the serum or spleen and paw tissues of CIA mice and culture media via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mRNA expression of IL-17, MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-13 was also detected in paw tissues and synovial fibroblasts through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Histological changes in the knee joints were observed via hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) and safranin-O staining. The major compounds in the ginger extract were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Treatment with the ginger extract at 100 or 200 mg/kg significantly decreased the levels of IL-4, IFN-γ, and IL-17 and inhibited the expression of IL-17 in the spleen and paw tissues of CIA mice. Ginger extract inhibited the expression of MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-13 in the paw tissues of CIA mice and reduced inflammatory bone destruction in joint tissues. In IL-1β-stimulated synovial fibroblasts, the ginger extract significantly decreased the production of IFN-γ and IL-17 via inhibition of mRNA expression. The ginger extract also suppressed the expression of MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-13 mRNA. Vanillylacetone, 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, and 1,4-cineol were identified as the main compounds in the ginger extract. These results indicate that ginger can prevent RA progression by inhibiting the secretion of Th1/Th2 and Th17 cytokines and MMPs, which are involved in the pathogenesis of RA.
