    Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic led to profound changes in the organization of health care systems worldwide. Aims We sought to measure the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes for mechanical thrombectomy, stroke, and intracranial hemorrhage hospitalizations over a three-month period at the height of the pandemic (1 March–31 May 2020) compared with two control three-month periods (immediately preceding and one year prior). Methods Retrospective, observational, international study, across 6 continents, 40 countries, and 187 comprehensive stroke centers. The diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes and/or classifications in stroke databases at participating centers. Results The hospitalization volumes for any stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and mechanical thrombectomy were 26,699, 4002, and 5191 in the three months immediately before versus 21,576, 3540, and 4533 during the first three pandemic months, representing declines of 19.2% (95%CI, −19.7 to −18.7), 11.5% (95%CI, −12.6 to −10.6), and 12.7% (95%CI, −13.6 to −11.8), respectively. The decreases were noted across centers with high, mid, and low COVID-19 hospitalization burden, and also across high, mid, and low volume stroke/mechanical thrombectomy centers. High-volume COVID-19 centers (−20.5%) had greater declines in mechanical thrombectomy volumes than mid- (−10.1%) and low-volume (−8.7%) centers (p  〈  0.0001). There was a 1.5% stroke rate across 54,366 COVID-19 hospitalizations. SARS-CoV-2 infection was noted in 3.9% (784/20,250) of all stroke admissions. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a global decline in the volume of overall stroke hospitalizations, mechanical thrombectomy procedures, and intracranial hemorrhage admission volumes. Despite geographic variations, these volume reductions were observed regardless of COVID-19 hospitalization burden and pre-pandemic stroke/mechanical thrombectomy volumes.

    Abstract: In this study, we examine the relative contributions of syllabic awareness, phonemic awareness, and oral vocabulary knowledge in early akshara reading ability from Grades 1 through 5. The performance of 488 students in two states of South India, Karnataka (Kannada language) and Andhra Pradesh (Telugu language), was measured. Results from a commonality analysis indicate that there was an increasing independent contribution of syllabic awareness to Kannada and Telugu decoding through the five grades, but the unique contribution of phonemic awareness steadily declined through the five grades, as it became subsumed within syllabic awareness. The contribution of oral vocabulary knowledge did not present a clear pattern across the five grades. This study builds on a growing body of literature on the akshara orthographies to shed light on the precise nature of the developmental asymmetry in the dual syllabic and phonemic representation in akshara reading.

    Abstract: Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) affects approximately 1 per 8500 to 14000 new-borns worldwide. Although the clinical entity is well defined, the pathogenesis of PRS is debated. The present study aims to understand the contribution of genomic imbalances and genetic variants in patients clinically diagnosed of PRS. Methodology A total of 7 independent patients with nonsyndromic PRS thoroughly evaluated by a medical geneticist at a tertiary care hospital, were included in the study. Blood samples were collected from these patients and their family members. Array CGH was performed on all 7 patients and their respective family members for detection of underlying cytogenetic defects. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed for 5 families to capture single nucleotide variants or small indels. Results Cytogenetic analyses did not detect any previously reported gross chromosomal aberrations for PRS in the patient cohort. However, copy number variations (CNVs) of size 〈 1 Mb were detected in patients which may have implications in PRS. The present study provided evidence for the occurrence of de novo deletions at 7p14.1 locus in PRS patients: further validating the candidate loci susceptibility in oral clefts. WES data identified LOXL3 as candidate gene, carrying novel deleterious variant, which is suggestive of the role of point mutations in the pathogenesis of PRS. Conclusion The present study offered considerable insight into the contribution of cytogenetic defects and novel point mutation in the etiology of nonsyndromic PRS. Studies comprising large number of cases are required to fully elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying the PRS phenotype.

    Abstract: During initial repair of supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC), the vertical vein (VV) is sometimes left patent (not ligated or divided) in the hope that this strategy may reduce the likelihood or severity of postoperative pulmonary hypertensive crises. We report a case of a 35-year-old pregnant patient with previously repaired supracardiac TAPVC who presented with atrial arrhythmia and right heart dilation. A cardiac magnetic resonance imaging study confirmed the diagnosis of patency of the vertical vein and right heart dilation. The VV was occluded with a catheter-delivered vascular occlusion device through a percutaneous approach, resulting in resolution of right heart dilation and arrhythmia. This case highlights the role of cross-sectional imaging as an adjunct to echocardiography in adults with repaired congenital heart disease.

    Abstract: Cognitive radios are expected to play an important role in capturing the constantly growing traffic interest on remote networks. To improve the usage of the radio range, a cognitive radio hub detects the weather, evaluates the open-air qualities, and then makes certain decisions and distributes the executives’ space assets. The cognitive radio works in tandem with artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence methodologies to provide a flexible and intelligent allocation for continuous production cycles. The purpose is to provide a single source of information in the form of a survey research to enable academics better understand how artificial intelligence methodologies, such as fuzzy logics, genetic algorithms, and artificial neural networks, are used to various cognitive radio systems. The various artificial intelligence approaches used in cognitive radio engines to improve cognition capabilities in cognitive radio networks are examined in this study. Computerized reasoning approaches, such as fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, and artificial neural networks, are used in the writing audit. This topic also covers cognitive radio network implementation and the typical learning challenges that arise in cognitive radio systems.
