    Abstract: Open Science is becoming a mainstream scientific ideology in psychology and related fields. However, researchers, especially early-career researchers (ECRs) in developing countries, are facing significant hurdles in engaging in Open Science and moving it forward. In China, various societal and cultural factors discourage ECRs from participating in Open Science, such as the lack of dedicated communication channels and the norm of modesty. To make the voice of Open Science heard by Chinese-speaking ECRs and scholars at large, the Chinese Open Science Network (COSN) was initiated in 2016. With its core values being grassroots-oriented, diversity, and inclusivity, COSN has grown from a small Open Science interest group to a recognized network both in the Chinese-speaking research community and the international Open Science community. So far, COSN has organized three in-person workshops, 12 tutorials, 48 talks, and 55 journal club sessions and translated 15 Open Science-related articles and blogs from English to Chinese. Currently, the main social media account of COSN (i.e., the WeChat Official Account) has more than 23,000 subscribers, and more than 1,000 researchers/students actively participate in the discussions on Open Science. In this article, we share our experience in building such a network to encourage ECRs in developing countries to start their own Open Science initiatives and engage in the global Open Science movement. We foresee great collaborative efforts of COSN together with all other local and international networks to further accelerate the Open Science movement.

    Abstract: In this experimental research, a label-free sensing strategy is developed and employed to detect adenosine triphosphate with utilization of aptamers, including exonuclease I and SYBR Gold. The conformation of aptamers bonding to the specific target molecule (ATP) is transformed into an antiparallel G-quadruplex structure from a random coil. Afterwards, considering the unfolded aptamers are the preferred substrates for exonuclease I, the addition of exonuclease I is used so as to digest unfolded aptamers in the mixture in a selective manner. In the follow-up study, in order to strengthen the fluorescence intensity, SYBR Gold is applied as a fluorescent probe. The aptasensor presents the features of high selectivity against adenosine triphosphate and the low detecting limit of concentrations (39.2 nM). In order to verify the validation of experimental procedures and the practical application of the aptasensor, the detection of adenosine triphosphate for human serum samples is performed with satisfactory success. The recovery result with the range of 93.8%–108.1% is desirable and suggests that the designed approach is applicable. The outcomes of the cellular adenosine triphosphate assay manifest that the level of adenosine triphosphate concentrations in cell extracts can be monitored without the interference of other substances in the cells. Subject to its advantageous benefits (cost-effective, easiness, rapidity, and extraordinary selectivity), the designed approach has a promising implication for adenosine triphosphate detection in the research domain of bioanalytical science and biology.

    Abstract: The traditional view is that the occurrence and development of hallux valgus (HV) are mainly due to environmental factors. Recent studies have suggested the large contribution of genetic heritability to HV, but it remains elusive about the genetic variants underlying the development of HV. To gain knowledge about the molecular mechanisms of HV pathogenesis by genetic approach, whole exome sequencing studies were performed in 10 individuals (7 affected by HV and 3 unaffected) from three independent families. Specific mutations were found to be related to the pathogenesis of HV and conform to the laws of inheritance. A total of 36 genes with functional candidate single nucleotide variants were identified. Genetic predisposition plays an important role in the development of HV. Interestingly, some of these genes are related to chronic arthritis, such as the complement encoding gene C7, or are related to long toe or long fingers, such as TTN, COL6A3, LARS, FIG4, and CBS. This study identified rare potentially pathogenic mutations represented by genes related to digital anomalies and chronic arthritis underlying the familial types of HV, which acquired new insights into the genetic and physiological foundations of HV, thereby might improve accurate prevention and drug development for HV.
