    Abstract: A strategy to prepare interconnected carbon nanofibers using an electrospinning technique is proposed. This strategy lies in the addition of poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene (PAN-co-PB) copolymer in a precursor solution composed of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and N,N-dimethylformamide. During pyrolysis, PB decomposed, softening the fibers and creating the possibility of fiber–fiber connection. The fiber diameter decreased with an increase in the PAN-co-PB content. Further addition of PAN-co-PB caused the fusion of neighboring fibers, which enlarged the fiber diameter and decreased the specific surface area of fibers. The microcrystallite sizes of carbon nanofibers depended on the PAN-co-PB content; and the addition of PAN-co-PB promoted the development of ordered graphite crystallites. The interconnected carbon nanofibers exhibited an electrical conductivity four times larger than that of the nanofibers with a uniform separated fibrous structure. The purpose of this work is to prepare carbon nanofiber mats with good electrical conductivity and well-controlled morphology for further use as energy-associated devices and catalyst supports.

    Abstract: The role of autoimmune diseases on the risk for acute epiglottitis remains uncertain. This study aimed to delineate the association between epiglottitis and autoimmune diseases using population database. Methods: A population-based retrospective study was conducted to analyze claims data from Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database collected over January, 2000, to December, 2013. Results: In total, 2339 patients with epiglottitis were matched with 9356 controls without epiglottitis by sex, age, socioeconomic status, and urbanization level. The correlation between autoimmune diseases and epiglottitis was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Compared with controls, patients with epiglottitis were much more likely to have preexisting Sjögren syndrome (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.37; 95% CI: 1.14-4.91; P = .021). In addition, polyautoimmunity was associated with increased risk of epiglottitis (aOR: 2.08; 95% CI: 1.14-3.80; P = .018), particularly in those aged 〉 50 years (aOR: 2.61; 95% CI: 1.21-5.66; P = .015). Conclusions: Among autoimmune diseases, we verify the association between epiglottitis and Sjögren syndrome in Taiwan. Furthermore, we present the novel discovery that patients with epiglottitis have an increased risk of polyautoimmunity, particularly those aged 〉 50 years.

    Abstract: Objective: Aberrant driving behavior (ADB) decreases road safety and is particularly relevant for urban bus drivers, who are required to drive daily shifts of considerable duration. Although numerous frameworks based on human physiological features have been applied to predict ADB, the research remains at an early stage. This study used heart rate variability (HRV) parameters to establish ADB occurrence prediction models with various machine learning approaches. Methods: Twelve Taiwanese urban bus drivers were recruited for four consecutive days of naturalistic driving data collection (from their routine routes) between March and April 2020; driving behaviors and physiological signals were obtained from provided devices. Weather and traffic congestion information was determined from public data, while sleep quality and professional driving experience were self-reported. To develop the ADB prediction model, several machine learning models—logistic regression, random forest, naive Bayes, support vector machine, and gated recurrent unit (GRU)—were trained and 10-fold cross-validated by using the testing data. Results: Most drivers with ADB reported deficient sleep quality (≤80%), with significantly higher mean scores on the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale and driver behavior questionnaire subcategory of lapses and errors than drivers without ADB. Next, HRV indices significantly differed between the measurement of a pre-ADB event and a baseline. The accuracy of the GRU models ranged from 78.84% ± 1.49% to 89.57% ± 1.31%. Conclusion: Drivers with ADB tend to have inadequate sleep quality, which may increase their fatigue levels and impair driving performance. The established time-series models can be considered for ADB occurrence prediction among urban bus drivers.

    Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is typically diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG). However, PSG is time-consuming and has some clinical limitations. This study thus aimed to establish machine learning models to screen for the risk of having moderate-to-severe and severe OSA based on easily acquired features. Methods We collected PSG data on 3529 patients from Taiwan and further derived the number of snoring events. Their baseline characteristics and anthropometric measures were obtained, and correlations among the collected variables were investigated. Next, six common supervised machine learning techniques were utilized, including random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression (LR), and naïve Bayes (NB). First, data were independently separated into a training and validation dataset (80%) and a test dataset (20%). The approach with the highest accuracy in the training and validation phase was employed to classify the test dataset. Next, feature importance was investigated by calculating the Shapley value of every factor, which represented the impact on OSA risk screening. Results The RF produced the highest accuracy (of 〉 70%) in the training and validation phase in screening for both OSA severities. Hence, we employed the RF to classify the test dataset, and results showed a 79.32% accuracy for moderate-to-severe OSA and 74.37% accuracy for severe OSA. Snoring events and the visceral fat level were the most and second most essential features of screening for OSA risk. Conclusions The established model can be considered for screening for the risk of having moderate-to-severe or severe OSA.

    Abstract: Background: Ovarian cancer is the seventh most commonly diagnosed malignancy worldwide and has the highest mortality rate among all gynecological cancers. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is widely applied in Taiwan and has been used in integrated therapies to treat patients with cancer. Methods: Patients with ovarian cancer who were registered in the Taiwan Registry for Catastrophic Illness Patients Database between 1997 and 2012 were considered for this study. A 1:1 individual matching by age was implemented. A total of 101 CHM users and 101 non-CHM users were involved. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was applied to evaluate the hazard ratio of overall mortality. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used to calculate the cumulative incidence of the overall survival rate. Association rule mining and network analysis were used to analyze CHM prescription patterns. Results: CHM users showed a significantly lower risk of overall mortality than nonusers (hazard ratio = 0.45, 95% confidence interval = 0.23-0.91; P = .0256; multivariate Cox proportional hazard model). The cumulative incidence of the overall survival probability was higher for CHM users than for non-CHM users (log-rank test, P = .0009). Association rule mining and network analysis suggested that the main CHM cluster was associated with the usage of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, Chuan-Xiong, and Xi-Xin, followed by the use of Bai-Shao, Da-Huang, and Di-Huang. Conclusions: CHM, as an adjunctive therapy, may reduce the overall mortality in patients with ovarian cancer. A list of herbal medicines that could potentially be used in future studies and clinical trials has also been provided.

    Abstract: Supine position reduces nasal patency compared with that in the sitting position; however, data on the effects of prone position on nasal patency is lacking. Methods: We assessed the nasal patency of 30 healthy individuals without upper respiratory tract disorders by using visual analog scale (VAS) score and acoustic rhinometry in 7 positions: sitting; frontal, right, and left supine; and frontal, right, and left prone. Results: According to the VAS scores, compared with that in the sitting position, both the supine and prone positions significantly increased subjective nasal obstruction ( P 〈 .001). The prone position had a more significant effect than did the supine position ( P = .017). The results of minimal cross-sectional area measured through acoustic rhinometry demonstrated that both the supine and prone positions reduced the nasal patency significantly, but without significant differences between the effects of prone and supine positions ( P = .794). Conclusion: This is the first study to elucidate that the prone position can significantly reduce the nasal patency in healthy individuals through subjective and objective assessments.     Abstract: The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between the noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS) and the specific activities of sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na + ,K + -ATPase) and calcium adenosine triphosphatase (Ca 2+ -ATPase) in the cochlear lateral wall. The specific activities of these enzymes were quantified by microcolorimetric assay. Changes in auditory brain stem response (ABR) thresholds were compared with the quantitative alterations of the specific activities of Na + ,K + -ATPase and Ca 2+ -ATPase in the cochlear lateral wall of guinea pigs with a noise-induced TTS. In the majority of those noise-exposed ears with complete recovery of ABR thresholds, the specific activities of both enzymes returned to at least 70% of the mean specific activity of the control group. Although other factors may be involved, reversible inactivation of Na + ,K + -ATPase and Ca 2+ -ATPase in the cochlear lateral wall may be one component of the TTS. Our present findings could drive further studies on the molecular basis of noise-induced hearing loss.

    Abstract: This study explores the relationships among the following four dimensions, with a particular focus on how flow experience mediates social shopping behavior: (1) user beliefs; (2) website quality, including information quality, system quality, and service quality; (3) flow experience; and (4) social shopping behavior, as demonstrated by a sample of the online consumer population. We gathered online surveys (n = 386) in Taiwan to test the relationships among the four dimensions laid out in our structural equation model. The results confirm that flow experience has a mediating effect on social shopping behavior. They also show that there is a significant correlation between user beliefs, website quality, and flow experience. The results fill an empirical gap in the theoretical literature on social shopping behavior, especially areas involving website quality and the beliefs of users. They also offer insight into the positive effect which flow experience has on social shopping behavior. This study offers a valuable contribution by exploring in detail the way in which flow experience affects social shopping behavior through strengthening the influence of both website quality and user beliefs.

    Abstract: Serum ghrelin levels are elevated in uremic patients. However, no data are available on the relationship between metabolic syndrome and serum ghrelin levels in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. ⋄ Methods Metabolic syndrome and its components were defined using diagnostic criteria recommended by the International Diabetes Federation. Fasting serum samples were taken from 30 PD patients. Serum ghrelin levels were measured by using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. ⋄ Results Of the 30 PD patients, 53.3% (16/30) had metabolic syndrome. Fasting serum ghrelin corrected inversely with metabolic syndrome among these PDs patients ( p = 0.002). By odds ratio (OR) analysis of metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome diagnostic criteria, the predictors for metabolic syndrome are fasting glucose [OR: 39.00; 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.80 to 399.85; p 〈 0.001], triglycerides (OR: 37.50; 95% CI: 3.64 to 386.51; p 〈 0.001), and waist circumference (OR: 4.20; 95% CI: 1.95 to 9.03; p 〈 0.001). Univariate linear regression analysis showed that body weight ( r = –0.461, p = 0.010), waist circumference ( r = –0.390, p = 0.033), and body mass index ( r = –0.438, p = 0.016) were negatively correlated with serum ghrelin, and serum high density lipoprotein [HDL ( r = 0.626, p 〈 0.001)] was positively correlated with serum ghrelin. Multivariate forward stepwise linear regression analysis of the significant variables showed that HDL ( R 2 change = 0.392; p 〈 0.001) was the independent predictor of serum ghrelin in PD patients and explained 39.2% of the variance. ⋄ Conclusions These results indicate an inverse association between circulating fasting ghrelin and metabolic syndrome in PD patients. Serum HDL was associated with serum ghrelin among PD patients.

    Abstract: Apigenin (4,5,7-trihydroxyflavone), a promising chemopreventive agent presented in fruits and vegetables, has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in many types of human cancer cell lines. However, there is no available information to address the effects of apigenin on human lung cancer H460 cells. In the present studies, H460 cells were treated with apigenin for different time and then were analyzed for the morphological changes, induction of apoptosis, protein levels associated with apoptosis and results in dose-dependent induction of morphological changes, decrease in the percentage of viability, induced DNA damage and apoptosis; down-modulation of the protein expression of Bid, Bcl-2, procaspase-8; up-regulation of protein levels of Bax, caspase-3, AIF, cytochrome c, GRP78 and GADD153; decreased the levels of mitochondrial membrane potential and increased the productions of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Ca 2+ in H460 cells. Taken together, this is the first systematic in vitro study showing the involvement of apoptosis regulatory proteins as potential molecular targets of apigenin in human lung cancer H460 cells.
