Abstract: The expression of the inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor (IP 3 R) is upregulated and the function of IP 3 R also increases during atrial fibrillation (AF). 2-Aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2-APB) is a membrane-permeable inhibitor of IP 3 R. However, the effect of 2-APB on AF is unknown. The aim of the present study is to explore the effects of 2-APB on AF. In vitro rabbit heart models of ischemia-, stretch- and cholinergic agitation-induced AF were developed. Fura-2-acetoxymethyl (Fura-2-AM) and Mg 2+ -Fura-2-AM were used to monitor alterations of intracellular Ca 2+ and ATP, respectively, in HL-1 cells, an atrial muscle cell line, under chemical ischemia or cholinergic agitation. The results showed that inhibition of IP 3 R significantly reduced the incidence and its probability of being sustained in all three types of AF. IP 3 R inhibition ameliorated the cytoplasmic Ca 2+ overload and energy compromise resulting from chemical ischemia or cholinergic agitation. Thus, IP 3 R inhibition may be a novel target for AF treatment, and IP 3 R may be an important molecule in the context of different kinds of AF.

Abstract: This paper develops a model which indicates that foreign firms’ location choices are determined jointly by site attributes and firm heterogeneity. The model is estimated using data on 2565 foreign manufacturing investments in China. The conditional logit estimates and simulation results provide supportive evidence. An increase in a firm’s labour intensity magnifies the impact of labour cost, while a location’s local communications infrastructure has a stronger influence on foreign firms that have adopted modern information technology. It is also found that agglomeration effects decrease with firm size and labour quality. Implications for researchers and policy-makers are discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract: In the e-commerce environment, website-based recommendation systems have been developed in order to help consumers without professional fashion-related knowledge to identify the most relevant garment products satisfying their specific personalized requirements in terms of fashion and functionalities. However, there are two main drawbacks in the existing recommendation systems: (1) the existing shopping data and/or human body data-based recommendations cannot effectively deal with fashion trends; (2) the shoppers’ experience and knowledge are rarely considered in these systems. To solve these two drawbacks, we propose in this paper a new garment recommendation mechanism using a Markov Chain and Complex Network integrated method. The Markov Chain method is employed as a suitable tool permitting one to extract fashion trends from a lower quantity of shopping data. The Complex Network method is used to formalize uncertain relations between human body shapes, garment fitting effects and garment features, provided by shopping experts. Compared with other existing recommendation methods, the proposed method is validated to be more robust and more interpretable owing to its capacity of handling body types and fashion trends.

Abstract: Using the 2004 China economic census database, this paper examines the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on the geographical concentration of manufacturing industries, controlling for a broad set of other determinants of industrial agglomeration. Contrary to the argument that ICT leads to more dispersion, it is found that ICT promotes geographical concentration of industries. The results are robust to different measures of ICT, at different geographical levels and to the consideration of endogeneity.

Abstract: This study investigated the toxicity of heavy ion radiation to mice testis by microRNA (miRNA) sequencing and bioinformatics analyses. Testicular indices and histology were measured following enterocoelia irradiation with a 2 Gy carbon ion beam, with the testes exhibiting the most serious injuries at 4 weeks after carbon ion radiation (CIR) exposure. Illumina sequencing technology was used to sequence small RNA libraries of the control and irradiated groups at 4 weeks after CIR. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses implicated differential miRNAs in the regulation of target genes involved in metabolism, development, and reproduction. Here, 8 miRNAs, including miR-34c-5p, miR-138, and 6 let-7 miRNA family members previously reported in testis after radiation, were analyzed by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to validate miRNA sequencing data. The differentially expressed miRNAs described here provided a novel perspective for the role of miRNAs in testis toxicity following CIR.

Abstract: Being direct band-gap materials, carbon nanotubes have a potential to be efficient spectrum detection material. By depositing the carbon nanotubes on the substrate surface using chemical vapor deposition growth methods, a carbon nanotube-based device is fabricated with micromachined techniques. The structure of the carbon nanotube-based device is characterized using scanning electron microscope image. The spectra of carbon nanotube-based device are measured. The photocurrent as a function of wavelength reveals a broad absorption at wavelength from 500 to 1000 nm, showing the potential application in wide-range spectrum detection.

Abstract: Inhibition of translocator protein (18 kDa) (TSPO) can effectively prevent reperfusion-induced arrhythmias and improve postischemic contractile performance. Mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening, mediated mainly through oxidative stress during ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), is a key event in reperfusion injury. 4′-Chlorodiazepam is a widely used TSPO antagonist. However, whether 4′-chlorodiazepam can improve cardiac functional recovery during postischemia reperfusion by affecting oxidative enzymes, reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thereby inhibiting mPTP opening is still unknown. Cardiac function including heart rate, coronary flow rate, left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP), left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP), maximal time derivatives of pressure (±d P/d t max) and the severity of ventricular arrhythmias were analyzed in isolated rat hearts during I/R. mPTP opening, ROS and oxidative enzyme activities were measured with fluorometric or spectrophotometric techniques. 4′-Chlorodiazepam did not affect heart rate and coronary flow rate, but abolished the increase in LVEDP, accelerated the recovery of LVDP and ±d P/d t max, and reduced the severity of ventricular arrhythmias. The mPTP opening probability was reduced by 4′-chlorodiazepam, accompanied by a reduction in ROS level. In addition, the activities of mitochondrial electron transport chain complex I and complex III were increased, while those of xanthine oxidase and NADPH oxidase were reduced. Therefore, 4′-chlorodiazepam may improve cardiac functional recovery during reperfusion, potentially by affecting the activities of oxidative enzymes, reducing ROS and thereby inhibiting mPTP opening. The present study presents evidence that 4′-chlorodiazepam could be a novel adjunct to reperfusion.

Abstract: Adolescents are prone to multiple health risk behaviors. These might lead to insufficient sleep, which is inconducive to adolescent growth. Therefore, this study explored the impact of a cluster of adolescent health risk behaviors on sleep time, providing a reference for designing relevant intervention measures. From November to December 2019, a stratified cluster sampling method was used to sample middle and high schools in 4 functional districts of Chongqing, China. A total of 8546 participants were selected for a questionnaire survey. Two-step clustering helped identify the health risk behavior clusters. Multivariate logistic regression models helped examine the association between the different clusters and sleep time. The rate of insufficient sleep was 65.8%. Three types of clusters were identified, namely (1) high-risk (poor) cluster (17.3%), (2) low physical activity (medium) cluster (55.1%), and (3) low-risk (good) cluster (27.6%). The high-risk and low physical activity clusters showed that the adjusted OR values of 1.471 (1.266-1.710) and 1.174 (1.052-1.310) were significantly associated with insufficient sleep ( P  〈  .001). Adolescent health risk behaviors were clustered, and different clusters had different sleep time. Schools authorities and healthcare practitioners should formulate effective intervention measures according to the characteristics of different clusters to promote healthy growth among adolescents.
