Abstract: This paper presents initial findings from longer-term transdisciplinary research concerning the social dynamics of urban neighbourhoods. It examines the spatial clustering of ethnicity and class in neighbourhoods over urban history, from Bronze Age Mesopotamia to contemporary cities. Fourteen distinct drivers of social clustering are identified, grouped under the headers of macro-structural forces, the state, local regimes and institutions, and bottom–up processes. The operation of these processes is examined through three historical and three archaeological case studies of clustering. It is concluded that: clustering is a common, but not universal, attribute of cities; there is much variation in clustering patterns, both within and between cities and urban traditions; and, consideration of a wide variety of drivers is required to understand historical and modern residential dynamics.

Abstract: We describe methods of coding and analyzing historical and archaeological data for comparative analysis of premodern cities. As part of a larger study of spatial access to urban services, we identify eight relevant contextual domains and define variables for each domain. Information from publications on each city is assembled, and the data are coded independently by three scholars and checked for agreement. To date, we have completed contextual coding for 15 cities. Here, we focus on methods to analyze relationships among variables within contextual domains using two example domains—Class Mobility and Governance. Key methodological points involve the problem of missing data, multiple tests with an appropriate correction, and the importance of variation among cases for effective analysis of a domain. Our interpretation of preliminary findings highlights a degree of independence between two different arenas of social life that may relate to collective action. Documentation of our procedures contributes to a growing body of systematic, comparative, cross-cultural analyses of mid-size samples. This study is distinctive in its focus on cities rather than cultures, societies, or polities.

Abstract: The following study tested the hypothesis that the ability to speak a second language authentically or like a native speaker was related to an individual's sensitivity to cues in interpersonal situations, his empathic capacity. A test of empathy consisted of silent film clips shown at various speeds; subjects were asked to indicate each change in facial expression they observed. A test group of 28 University students took this and additional control tests including the Thematic Apperception Test. These subjects learned basic conversations in Japanese in four one-hour sessions. Their pronunciation was rated by native speakers on general authenticity and on specific phonetic details for five spontaneous sentences and five sentences repeated after the instructor. Results indicated differences in speaking skills which were related to two clusters of variables representing independent personality characteristics: an empathy dimension defined by four variables (tolerance to anxiety, intelligence, involvement in emotional experiences, and perception of emotional expression) was related to correct pronunciation of specific details in spontaneous sentences, while an intuition dimension (tolerance to anxiety, intelligence, and psychological mindedness) was significantly related to general authenticity of pronunciation of repeated sentences.

Abstract: Background Studies examining the ε4 allele of the APOE gene as a factor affecting the severity of multiple sclerosis (MS) have yielded conflicting results. The focus of these studies on physical disability to the neglect of cognitive impairment is surprising in light of the associations between the ε4 allele and other dementia conditions. Only two studies examine the relationship between the ε4 allele and cognitive impairment. Methods A neuropsychological test battery was administered to 263 MS patients, and their current disability status was evaluated. Genotypes were determined for APOE epsilon and for two promoter region polymorphisms (-219 G/T and -491 A/T). Results Although effects were generally weak, female patients with the -491 AA genotype had a later age of disease onset, lower disability scores, and somewhat higher scores on the cognitive battery. Male patients with the ε2 allele had lower disability and higher scores on the cognitive battery. The ε4 allele was not related to physical disability, and there was no difference between ε4+and ε4– patients in overall cognitive performance. However, when patients with severe cognitive impairment were identified, a greater proportion (52%) of these patients had the ε4 allele than those in the unimpaired group (27%). Conclusion An association with the ε4 allele was evident in this study, but only in cases of severe cognitive impairment.

Abstract: As an initial step in expanding our understanding of the influence of family context on adolescent mothers, this article investigates the patterns of, and factors associated with, their household arrangements. Although adolescent mothers are at great risk of eventually living in female-headed households and facing economic hardship, past research has said little about the households of these young mothers while they are teenagers. Using individual-level data from the 1980 U.S. Census, we show household arrangements vary by marital status, race/ethnicity, age, number of children, and central city residence. And there are important differences by race/ethnicity in the way the other variables are related to household arrangements. Importantly, household arrangements are related to school enrollment, labor force participation, poverty status, and receiving public assistance.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a longitudinal study of fiscal characteristics among suburban high school districts in a metro politan area. The findings indicate that if uniformity of fiscal characteristics is essential to equal educational opportunity, then action to ameliorate disparities among districts must be taken at the state or federal level. Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between social connections and collective civic action. Measuring social capital in eight Phoenix, Arizona, neighborhoods allowed the authors to determine that individuals with strong social bonding (i.e., association and trust among neighbors) are more likely to take civic action. However, while social capital lessens the relationship between an individual’s social status and the likelihood of taking action, it does not eliminate the positive relationship. The analysis also suggests that bonding and bridging are distinct forms of social capital that have some different antecedents

Abstract: Movement toward more active, experiential learning pedagogies is a trend that has found increasing interest in the last decade. The reasons for this interest include creating a more involving and interesting experience for the student, creating a more memorable experience, and facilitating more effective and durable learning. This article discusses an innovative, team-based experiential learning project, oriented around a live case study. While live case studies have been used for some time, what is unique about this exercise is the use of a live case as an integrating project for three separate marketing courses. This large, integrative project provided students with real-life interactions between business entities that they would eventually face upon entry into the workforce. Important factors to consider in the design of integrative experiences such as this one are discussed.

Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Egypt and worldwide, placing great strain on the world’s health systems. High-quality treatment of CVD requires a valid, reliable measurement for ensuring evidence-based care. Clinical outcomes registries have been used to support quality improvement activities in some countries, but there are few examples of their implementation in resource-limited settings. A registry for acute coronary syndrome was piloted in 5 hospitals in Egypt, and observations regarding barriers and enabling factors related to implementation are summarized. Themes that emerged from daily observations include the importance of rapid cycles of change, the need to build a culture of applied research, the importance of modeling a blame-free culture, and key constraints encountered related to human resources and technical infrastructure. This pilot demonstrates that clinical registries may be a cost-effective investment in data infrastructure to support quality improvement in low- and middle-income countries.
