    Abstract: Functional restoration of the bone-to-tendon interface (BTI) after rotator cuff repair is a challenge. Therefore, numerous biocompatible biomaterials for promoting BTI healing have been investigated. Purpose: To determine the efficacy of scaffolds with spatiotemporal delivery of growth factors (GFs) to accelerate BTI healing after rotator cuff repair. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: An advanced 3-dimensional printing technique was used to fabricate bioactive scaffolds with spatiotemporal delivery of multiple GFs targeting the tendon, fibrocartilage, and bone regions. In total, 50 rabbits were used: 2 nonoperated controls and 48 rabbits with induced chronic rotator cuff tears (RCTs). The animals with RCTs were divided into 3 groups: (A) saline injection, (B) scaffold without GF, and (C) scaffold with GF. To induce chronic models, RCTs were left unrepaired for 6 weeks; then, surgical repairs with or without bioactive scaffolds were performed. For groups B and C, each scaffold was implanted between the bony footprint and the supraspinatus tendon. Four weeks after repair, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence analyses were performed to evaluate early signs of regenerative healing. Histological, biomechanical, and micro–computed tomography analyses were performed 12 weeks after repair. Results: Group C had the highest mRNA expression of collagen type I alpha 1, collagen type III alpha 1, and aggrecan. Immunofluorescence analysis showed the formation of an aggrecan + /collagen II + fibrocartilaginous matrix at the BTI when repaired with scaffold with GFs. Histologic analysis revealed greater collagen fiber continuity, denser collagen fibers, and a more mature tendon-to-bone junction in GF-embedded scaffolds than those in the other groups. Group C demonstrated the highest load-to-failure ratio, and modulus mapping showed that the distribution of the micromechanical properties of the BTI repaired with GF-embedded scaffolds was comparable with that of the native BTI. Micro–computed tomography analysis identified the highest bone mineral density and bone volume/total volume ratio in group C. Conclusion: Bioactive scaffolds with spatially embedded GFs have significant potential to promote the BTI healing of chronic RCTs in a rabbit model. Clinical Relevance: The scaffolds with spatiotemporal delivery of GF may serve as an off-the-shelf biomaterial graft to promote the healing of RCTs.

    Abstract: The long-term efficacy and safety of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for refractory schizophrenia is rarely reported. We report the case of a 38-year-old female patient with refractory schizophrenia who was treated with ECT for 14 years (from 24 years of age). Case records of clinical treatment and laboratory tests are described and analyzed. During the first 11 years, the patient was treated with ECT as an adjunct to antipsychotic drugs, but the effectiveness was unstable. For the remaining 3 years she was treated with antipsychotic drugs as an adjunct to ECT and her condition stabilized as she gradually recovered social function. We summarize the clinical characteristics, therapy regimen, long-term effectiveness, and safety of this interesting case.

    Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have proved to act as crucial biomarkers in tumors. Novel biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) need to be investigated badly. To identify the differentially expressed lncRNAs between NSCLC tissue and adjacent tissue, microarray analysis was performed. lncRNA SLC16A1-AS1 was significantly less expressed in NSCLC tissue than that in adjacent tissue. Gain-of-function experiments was performed to determine the biological functions of SLC16A1-AS. In situhybridization and survival analysis were applied in lung cancer tissue samples to determine the prognostic role of SLC16A1-AS1. It was showed that SLC16A1-AS1 was remarkably downregulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Functionally, SLC16A1-AS1 overexpression could inhibit the viability and proliferation of lung cancer cell, block the cell cycle and promote cell apoptosis in vitro which may result from reduced phosphorylation of rat sarcoma (RAS)/ proto-oncogene serine/threonine-protein kinase (RAF)/ mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)/ extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) pathway caused by elevated expression of SLC16A1-AS1. Clinical sample analysis showed that SLC16A1-AS1 had a favorable impact on the overall survival and progression-free survival of patients with NSCLC. Our results suggested that SLC16A1-AS1 may act as a potential biomarker for patients with NSCLC.

    Abstract: In this article, we report on the exceptional application of polypyrrole/graphene composites (Ppy/G) for the corrosion protection of steel. Well-dispersed Ppy/G composites were successfully prepared using in situ solution polymerization. The prepared nanocomposites exhibited superior anticorrosion properties compared with the bare and epoxy, in which the corrosion protection efficiency increased 50–100 times with the Ppy(97)@G(3) pigment. The rheological and dielectric properties of the nanocomposites were superior to those of pure Ppy/epoxy. Ppy(97)@G(3) increased the thermal curing temperature from approximately 100°C to 110°C and considerably decreased the volume resistivity. The substantially improved properties of the nanocomposites were attributed to their high dispersions, which greatly enhanced the corrosion factors and barrier properties.

    Abstract: Acupuncture is a potential therapy for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its clinical effects and underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Emerging evidence suggests autophagy is involved in β-amyloid (Aβ) clearance. We hypothesised that electroacupuncture (EA) treatment of AD involves the autophagy pathway in rats. Methods We injected 2μl Aβ 1–40 bilaterally into the hippocampi of 42 rats to establish AD. Rats remained untreated (AD group, n=14) or received 24 EA treatments at GV20+BL23 over 28 days from day 7 post-injection with/without co-treatment with 3-methyladenine (3-MA), an autophagy inhibitor (AD+EA+3-MA and AD+EA groups, respectively, n=14 each). Cognitive function was evaluated by Morris water maze (MWM) testing. Hippocampi were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and stained with haematoxylin and eosin/transferase dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) to assess neuronal morphology/apoptosis, respectively. Protein expression of Beclin-1, LC3 and Aβ 1-40 was examined. Results In the MWM test, the AD+EA group showed an improvement in parameters consistent with improved learning/memory compared to untreated AD rats, and 3-MA attenuated these effects. EA mitigated cellular apoptosis resulting from Aβ infusion in the CA1 region and enhanced LC3II/LC3I ratios and Beclin-1 expression. Numerous autophagosome precursors and enlarged autophagosomes were observed by TEM in the hippocampi of EA-treated rats. Reduced Aβ levels, and co-localisation of Aβ and LC3II, were observed following EA treatment by immunofluorescence staining. EA+3-MA treated rats had much higher TUNEL-positive neurons, lower LC3II/LC3I ratios and Beclin-1 expression, and elevated Aβ levels compared with EA alone. Conclusions EA reduces neuronal apoptosis, enhances degradation of Aβ, and improves learning/memory in AD rats by upregulating the autophagy pathway.

    Abstract: Kinetics of oxidation of 1,4-butylene glycol by dihydroxydiperiodatoargentate(III) in alkaline liquid has been investigated by spectrophotometry in the 298.2–318.2K range. The order in oxidant was pseudo first order and the order with respect to 1,4-butylene glycol was 1 〈 n ap 〈 2. A plausible mechanism involving a pre-equilibrium of adduct formation between the complex and reductant was proposed. The activation parameters along with rate constants of the rate-determining step were calculated.

    Abstract: A fully implantable axial left ventricular assist device LAP31 was developed for Chinese or other heart failure patients who need partial support. Based on the 5-Lpm total cardiac blood output of Chinese without heart failure disease, the design point of LAP31 was set to a flow rate of 3 Lpm with 100-mmHg pressure head. To achieve the required pressure head and good hemolytic performance, a structure that includes a spindly rotor hub and a diffuser with splitter and cantilevered main blades was developed. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to analyze the hydraulic and hemodynamic performance of LAP31. Then in vitro hydraulics experiments were conducted. The numerical simulation results show that LAP31 could generate a 1 to 8 Lpm flow rate with a 60.9 to 182.7 mmHg pressure head when the pump was rotating between 9,000 and 12,000 rpm. The average scalar shear stress of the blood pump was 21.7 Pa, and the average exposure time was 71.0 milliseconds. The mean hemolysis index of LAP31 obtained using Heuser's hemolysis model and Giersiepen's model was 0.220% and 3.89 × 10 5% respectively. After adding the splitter blades, the flow separation at the suction surface of the diffuser was reduced. The cantilever structure reduced the tangential velocity from 6.1 to 4.7–1.4 m/s within the blade gap by changing the blade gap from shroud to hub. Subsequently, the blood damage caused by shear stress was reduced. In conclusion, the hydraulic and hemolytic characteristics of the LAP31 are acceptable for partial support.

    Abstract: Clinching technology is widely used in the automobile and furniture industries. Shearing strength is an important criterion for evaluating the quality of clinched joints. Round and rectangular clinched joints are based on the shape of the tools. In this article, the shearing strength of round joints was designed and discussed. Two methods, namely heat treatment and press-join orientation, were presented. Different rolling directions for Al6061, Al5052, and Q235 sheets were connected to investigate the shearing strength of round joints at 90° and 180°. An electric furnace was used to heat the clinched joints of the Al6061 sheets to 430 °C, 450 °C, 530 °C, and 570 °C and obtain the optimal heat treatment temperature. Results proved that press-join orientation and solid-solution treatment affect shearing strength.

    Abstract: Genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), is the commonest cause of ulcerative genital infections among the young and adult population. The significant association of genital ulceration and transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been shown in many studies. To explore the potential efficacy of topical treatment of genital herpes with penciclovir cream, a randomized, double-blind, multicentre, acyclovir-controlled Phase II clinical trial of penciclovir 1% cream 5 times daily up to 7 days for suppression of genital herpes was conducted in China. A total of 205 patients aged 20-59 years (mean age 36.0±8.8 years for acyclovir and 34.8±8.4 years for penciclovir) with a clinical diagnosis of genital herpes were randomly allocated to one of the 2 parallel treatment groups and used for analysis. Clinical assessment were made before treatment and followed up at every visit during the study. Our results show that there was an encouraging improvement simultaneously in the 2 groups although no significant differences in clinical efficacy with respect to clinical cure rate, and times to healing, resolution of all symptoms, absence of blisters, cessation of new blisters, crusting, and loss of crust between penciclovir and acyclovir groups in terms of primary, non-primary and total patients were found. However a significantly shorter time to crusting was found in primary penciclovir group when compared with primary acyclovir group. Adverse experience was generally infrequent and mild, and was comparable in the 2 treatment groups. Based on these preliminary clinical findings, further evaluation of penciclovir 3% cream for topical treatment of genital herpes is planned.
