    Abstract: Leaves, flowers and young shoots of yellow Camellia species are often used as a substitute for green tea in Vietnam. Yellow Camellia species contain high levels of polyphenol compounds, and have shown activities such as antioxidant, anticancer, and cytotoxic. Objectives We qualitatively screened phytochemicals, quantified total polyphenols of 70% ethanol (EtOH) extracts of leaves, young shoots, and flowers of Camellia vuquangensis and Camellia hatinhensis in Ha Tinh Province, Vietnam. Furthermore, these extracts have been evaluated for lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities at the in vivo level in the BALB/c mouse model, and in vitro cytotoxic activities. Materials and Methods Chemical methods and thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) analysis were used for the qualitative screening of phytochemicals. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine total polyphenols. Cell survival was determined through optical density (OD) measured when the protein composition of the cells was stained with sulforhodamine B (SRB). Inhibition of lipid peroxidation was evaluated by determining the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), which is a product of membrane lipid peroxidation. Results The total polyphenol contents of all parts of the two species were comparable to that of green tea with values between 319.3 and 342.6 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE/g) dry weight. Extracts of leaves, flowers of C. vuquangensis and C. hatinhensis showed strong lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities (IC 50 : 7.92–17.45 µg/mL) and moderate cytotoxic activities against cell lines HepG2, A549, MCF7, SK-Mel-2, HT-29, and AGS (IC 50 : 34.73–80.58 µg/mL). Conclusion These two tea species may be considered as herbal teas with various health benefits.

    Abstract: This study, nested within a large cohort study, sought to explore how well Vietnamese mothers with pre-school children understood the dental health education material commonly available in New South Wales, Australia. Design: Qualitative research. Setting: Home-based interviews. Method: Vietnamese-speaking mothers ( n = 24) with young children were provided with two dental leaflets which gave advice on health behaviours in English and Vietnamese for comparison. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic coding. Results: Mothers generally reported that the English leaflets were difficult to read due to their lower levels of English literacy skills. Although the mothers preferred leaflets in their native language, they noted that it did not completely reflect the Vietnamese culture. Mothers recommended pictorial presentations for immigrants to improve understanding. Conclusions: The consistency of our findings suggest that health education leaflets should be provided to parents in their first language with use of illustrations to improve understanding, and that producers of health education leaflets should consider cultural differences in translation.

    Abstract: A phytochemical investigation of an ethyl acetate fraction of Mahonia bealei trunks led to the isolation of three new and four known compounds. By means of NMR and MS spectroscopic methods, the structure of the new compounds was elucidated as bishexadecyl epiphyllate (1), 3-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-ethoxy-2-sulfopropane-1-ol (2), and 6α-acetoxystigmastan-3β-ol (3).

    Abstract: A new phenolic (caricapapayol, 1) and 8 known compounds (2-9) were isolated from the flowers of Carica papaya. Their structures were determined by analysis of HR-ESI-MS, NMR spectral data, and comparison with the literature. Among known compounds, compound 2 has not been reported from natural source. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 exhibited tyrosinase inhibitory activity with IC 50 values of 14.3 ± 2.7, 25.5 ± 1.9, and 19.8 ± 3.0 µM, respectively, in comparison with positive control kojic acid IC 50 11.3 ± 1.6 µM.

    Abstract: The human amniotic membrane is a highly abundant and readily available tissue that may be useful for regenerative medicine and cell therapy. The amniotic membrane stem cells can differentiate into multiple cell lineages; they have low immunogenicity and anti-inflammatory functions. This research aims to examine the protocols for the isolation of human amniotic membrane stem cells, including their phenotypic characterization and in vitro potential for differentiation toward keratinocytes. Human placentas were obtained from selected cesarean-sectioned births. We isolated amniotic stem cells by trypsin and collagenase B digestion and centrifuged with Percoll. After monolayer expansion of adherent cells, the cells were characterized by immunocytology with octamer-binding transcription factor 4 and differentiated into keratinocytes by treating the cells with insulin, hydrocortisone, BMP-4, and vitamin C. Protocol for isolation of stem cells from amniotic membrane has high efficiency. Differentiation markers of stem cells into keratinocytes, such as vimentin, cytokeratin (CK) 14, and CK19, were determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction increase over time in culture. Stem cells isolated from the amniotic membrane can differentiate into keratinocytes. It has opened the prospect of using stem cells to regenerate skin and clinical applications.

    Abstract: In this article, we present a study on the properties of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer/silica nanocomposites prepared in absence and presence of EVA-g-maleic anhydride as a compatibilizer between silica nanoparticles and ethylene vinyl acetate matrix. A series of ethylene vinyl acetate/silica nanocomposites with different contents of silica nanoparticles were prepared by solution method. EVA-g-maleic anhydride with 0.5 wt% maleic anhydride groups was added to all ethylene vinyl acetate/silica nanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared, field emission scanning electron microscopy, rheology behavior, and thermogravimetry analysis were used to characterize the structure, morphology, rheological, and thermal properties of the nanocomposites, respectively. The Fourier transform infrared spectra and field emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the hydroxyl groups on the surface of silica nanoparticles interact with maleic anhydride groups in EVA-g-maleic anhydride and lead to a finer dispersion of individual silica nanoparticles in the ethylene vinyl acetate matrix. The rheological properties and thermal stability of ethylene vinyl acetate/silica nanocomposites were significantly increased after adding EVA-g-maleic anhydride into the nanocomposites. Mechanical properties including tensile strength and elongation at break of the nanocomposites were mainly affected by the content of silica nanoparticles. For the tensile strength as well as elongation at break of the nanocomposites, a maximum value was observed at the content of 0.5 wt% of silica nanoparticles. The addition of EVA-g-maleic anhydride into ethylene vinyl acetate/silica nanocomposites resulted in a further improvement of mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.

    Abstract: This article aims to demonstrate the morphology of 261 total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) cases operated at Children's Hospital 1 with in-hospital mortality of 19.5% (51/261). Methods All the surgical protocols of TAPVC cases repaired between 2008 and June 2023 were reviewed. The descriptions of TAPVC were based on operative findings by surgeons. Results A total of 261 TAPVC patients were operated, including 124 (47.5%) supra, 83 (31.8%) intra, 41 (15.7%) infra, and 13 (5%) mixed cases. The in-hospital mortality was 19.5% (51/261). Fifteen cases are associated with other anomalies of the heart. Four subtypes of 124 supra TAPVC were found, with 42 (33.9%) obstructed cases. The standard was all pulmonary veins (PVs) forming a common vein (CV) and draining into the innominate veins, then going to the superior vena cava (SVC) (100/124, 80.6%). Eleven supra TAPVC cases were vascular vise type. Ten cases had the vertical vein running from the right of the CV and draining directly into the SVC. Of 83 intracardiac TAPVCs with 9 (10.8%) obstructed cases, the most common was all PVs draining directly into the coronary sinus (60/83, 72.3%). The second was all PVs draining directly into the right atrium (RA) via separated ostia or forming a CV before entering the RA (17/83, 20.5%). Also, there were three cases with rare variants and 100% obstruction when the diagnosis was explored. The in-hospital mortality of intracardiac type was 13.3% (11/83) 41 infra TAPVC with obstructed rate of 61% (25/41) and in-hospital mortality of 29.3% (12/41). Thirteen mixed TAPVCs were repaired, with most cases having three PVs forming a CV. Conclusion This article provides valuable information about the morphology of TAPVC types in Asian patients.

    Abstract: An analytical approach for nonlinear buckling and postbuckling responses of corrugated-core toroidal shell segments with carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced face sheets in thermal environment subjected to radial pressure is reported in this work. Three distribution laws of functionally graded CNT-reinforced layers and the trapezoidal and round forms of the corrugated core are investigated. An equivalent technique for corrugated panels is improved by adding thermal forces to model the behavior of the corrugated core. The nonlinear equations are formulated by using the geometrically nonlinear Donnell shell theory considering Pasternak’s foundation. An algorithm to solve a system of nonlinear equations is established using the Ritz energy method with three shell deflection amplitudes. The postbuckling expressions between the compressive and tensile loads with maximal deflection and the critical compressive and tensile loads are determined. The numerically investigated examples present the significantly beneficial effects of corrugated core and functionally graded CNT-reinforced face sheets on nonlinear buckling responses of structures.

    Abstract: This study sought to assess the cost-effectiveness of population-based tobacco control interventions, which included health promotion and education, smoke-free models, cessation programs, warning on package, marketing bans, and raising tax. Standardized activity-based costing ingredient approach was applied with the provider perspective to calculate interventions cost from 2013 to 2017. The potential health impacts of the aforementioned interventions were calculated through a Microsoft Excel-based modeling adapted from Higashi et al and Ngalesoni et al. All six population-based tobacco control interventions were highly cost-effective with ranges from 1405 VND (Vietnamese Dong) to 135 560 VND per DALY (disability-adjusted life year) averted. It was identified that raising cigarette taxes and applying health warnings on tobacco packages are the most favorable, cost-effective interventions. The results from this study provide a robust message that calls for increased attention and efforts in developing an appropriate policy agenda, which jointly integrates both political and community-based interventions, to maximize intervention impact on tobacco use.

    Abstract: Background. The National Oral Health Survey of Vietnam 1999 was conducted to inform policy development. Aims. This article aims to describe the oral health status, analyze its socioeconomic distribution, and evaluate change over time in the oral health of the adult population of Vietnam. Methods. A multistaged stratified sampling process was used. Adults aged 18+ years completed a social survey and were examined by trained and calibrated dentists. Results. Oral symptoms were frequent. Dental care utilization was low and mostly problem driven. One third of adults had periodontal pockets. Calculus was highly prevalent. Caries level was moderate with a mean decayed, missing, and filled teeth score of 4.98 (SD 5.7), with most as untreated decay. Factors related to caries were gender, hygiene practices, socioeconomic status, location, and dental visiting. Conclusions. The oral health status of the Vietnamese adult population was compromised by various factors. There was indication of deteriorating oral health of this population.
