Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to establish criterion-related validity for the Reading Passages Subtest of a locally developed curriculum-based measurement (CBM) instrument, providing cross-validation across reading curricula and criterion measures. First, second, and third graders' performances on the subtest were correlated with Total Reading scores from the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS). Correlation coefficients ranged from .54 to .79 indicating adequate criterion-related validity. Lowest correlations were obtained for first-grade subjects, who represented a restricted range of students. Specific results of the present study offer cross-validation evidence for CBM reading passage measures and provide support for CBM development in similar settings by school psychologists and educators.
