Abstract: Achilles tendon (AT) defects frequently occur in trauma and chronic injuries. Currently, no method can satisfactorily reconstruct the AT with completely restored function. Purpose: To evaluate the postoperative outcomes of AT defect reconstruction with decellularized bovine tendon sheets (DBTSs) in a rabbit model. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: DBTSs were prepared from bovine tendons after compression, decellularization, antigen extraction, freeze drying, and sterilization. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was obtained by differential centrifugation. Sixty-three rabbits were used in this study, and the AT defect model was created bilaterally. All rabbits were divided into 3 groups (n = 21). In the DBTS group and the DBTS + PRP group, 2-cm-long AT was excised and reconstructed by DBTSs or PRP-treated DBTSs. In the control group, the rabbits underwent AT transection, and stumps were sutured. After surgery, all rabbits were assessed by ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging and then sacrificed for histological examination and biomechanical testing at 4, 8, or 12 weeks. Results: Gross observations demonstrated the absence of immunologic incompatibility and rejection. Histological examination showed that DBTSs promoted host cell infiltration and new fibrous tissue integration as compared with the control group. In each group, there was an AT-like structure formation and aligned collagen fiber deposition at 12 weeks. Mechanical properties of the reconstructed AT were not significantly different among the 3 groups at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery ( P 〉 .05). Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging results illustrated that the reconstructed AT from each group maintained remodeling, and there was no significant difference in the echogenicity scoring ( P 〉 .05) and percentages of good and excellent ( P 〉 .05) among the 3 groups. Conclusion: DBTSs, which retain the native tendon structure and bioactive factors, had the ability to remodel and integrate into the rabbit AT and improve the healing process. Clinical Relevance: DBTSs could serve as an effective bioscaffold to reconstruct AT defects.

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the human CYP8A1 gene and myocardial infarction (MI) in Chinese people. Methods: 210 MI patients and 206 age-matched controls were genotyped and constructed haplotypes for 3 SNPs [3982C 〉 T (rs5602), C1117A (rs5629), C251T (rs454-98106)] of the human CYP8A1 gene. Results: The CC genotype of rs5629 was more frequently in MI patients than in control subjects (P = .030). The frequency of the A-C-T haplotype was significantly higher in MI patients than in control subjects (P =.001). The frequency of the C-T-T haplotype was significantly lower in MI patients than in control subjects (P= .011). Conclusions: The present results indicate that MI is associated with the CC genotype of rs5629 in the human CYP8A1 gene. The A-C-T haplotype appears to be a useful genetic marker and the C-T-T haplotype might be a protective factor of MI in Chinese people.

Abstract: Isolated congenital alar rim defects are extremely rare, and there has been no standard technique for the reconstruction of remarkable aesthetic deformity. Herein, we introduce a trifoliate flap for the correction of isolated congenital alar rim defects in pediatric patients. Fifteen cases undergoing nasal alar sulcus rotation flap surgery were analyzed retrospectively. This rotation flap including 3 triangles was a modified flap based on prior studies. Clinical medical notes and photographs were reviewed. Patients’ (or their parents) reported satisfactions with aesthetic outcome were also evaluated during the post-operative follow-up period. In all patients, the isolated congenital alar rim defects were successfully reconstructed. The rotation flap survived and the wound healed primarily. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 22 months (average 11 months). There were no incidents of flap loss, step-off deformities, nasal obstruction, or alar retraction. At follow-up of post-operative 3 months, pale red scars were observed in the operative area in few patients (2/15). However, these scars gradually became invisible at post-operative 6 months. All patients (or their parents) were satisfied with the aesthetic outcome of this operation. This newly designed trifoliate flap can be an alternative method for the reconstruction of isolated congenital alar rim defects in pediatric patients. The scars of this procedure can be unobvious with fine surgical suture.

Abstract: Predictors of recurrent stroke after endovascular treatment for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) remain uncertain. Objectives: Among baseline characteristics, lesion features, and cerebral perfusion changes, we try to explore which factors are associated with the risk of recurrent stroke in symptomatic ICAS after endovascular treatment. Design: Consecutive patients with symptomatic ICAS of 70–99% receiving endovascular treatment were enrolled. All patients underwent whole-brain computer tomography perfusion (CTP) within 3 days before and 3 days after the endovascular treatment. Baseline characteristics, lesion features, and cerebral perfusion changes were collected. Methods: Cerebral perfusion changes were evaluated with RAPID software and calculated as preprocedural cerebral blood flow (CBF)  〈  30%, time to maximum of the residue function (Tmax)  〉  6 s, and Tmax  〉  4 s volumes minus postprocedural. Cerebral perfusion changes were divided into periprocedural perfusion improvement ( 〉 0 ml) and non-improvement (⩽ 0 ml). Recurrent stroke within 180 days was collected. The Cox proportional hazards analysis analyses were performed to evaluate factors associated with recurrent stroke. Results: From March 2021 to December 2021, 107 patients with symptomatic ICAS were enrolled. Of the 107 enrolled patients, 30 (28.0%) patients underwent balloon angioplasty alone and 77 patients (72.0%) underwent stenting. The perioperative complications occurred in three patients. Among CBF  〈  30%, Tmax  〉  6 s, and Tmax  〉  4 s volumes, Tmax  〉  4 s volume was available to evaluate cerebral perfusion changes. Periprocedural perfusion improvement was found in 77 patients (72.0%) and non-improvement in 30 patients (28.0%). Nine patients (8.4%) suffered from recurrent stroke in 180-day follow-up. In Cox proportional hazards analysis adjusted for age and sex, perfusion non-improvement was associated with recurrent stroke [hazards ratio (HR): 4.472; 95% CI: 1.069–18.718; p = 0.040]. Conclusion: In patients with symptomatic ICAS treated with endovascular treatment, recurrent stroke may be related to periprocedural cerebral perfusion non-improvement. Abstract: Objectives: Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 is expressed in vascular endothelium and metabolizes arachidonic acid to biologically active epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which are potent endogenous vasodilators and inhibitors of vascular inflammation. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the interaction of CYP2C19*3 polymorphism and smoking and coronary artery disease (CAD) in a Uighur population. Methods: In a Chinese Uighur case-control study of patients with CAD (n = 336) and healthy controls (n = 370), we investigated the roles of polymorphism in the CYP2C19 gene by the use of polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. Results: The CYP2C19*3 AG + AA genotype was significantly more prevalent in patients with CAD (6.25.0% vs 2.96%; P = .03). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed 4 independent risk factors: the interaction of CYP2C19*3 and smoking (OR 7.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.32-10.23; P = .009), smoking (OR 3.23, 95% CI 1.72-5.44; P = .003), blood sugar (OR 2.12, 95% CI 1.03-4.21; P 〈 .01), and hypertension (OR 1.74, 95% CI 0.98-2.34; P = .013). Conclusions: The CYP2C19*3 polymorphism and CAD were synergistically and significantly associated in Chinese Uighur patients.

Abstract: Sihailongwan Maar Lake, located in Northeast China, is a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for demarcation of the Anthropocene. The lake’s varved sediments are formed by alternating allogenic atmospheric inputs and authigenic lake processes and store a record of environmental and human impacts at a continental-global scale. Varve counting and radiometric dating provided a precise annual-resolution sediment chronology for the site. Time series records of radioactive ( 239,240 Pu, 129 I and soot 14 C), chemical (spheroidal carbonaceous particles, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, soot, heavy metals, δ 13 C, etc.), physical (magnetic susceptibility and grayscale) and biological (environmental DNA) indicators all show rapid changes in the mid-20th century, coincident with clear lithological changes of the sediments. Statistical analyses of these proxies show a tipping point in 1954 CE. 239,240 Pu activities follow a typical unimodal globally-distributed profile, and are proposed as the primary marker for the Anthropocene. A rapid increase in 239,240 Pu activities at 88 mm depth in core SHLW21-Fr-13 (1953 CE) is synchronous with rapid changes of other anthropogenic proxies and the Great Acceleration, marking the onset of the Anthropocene. The results indicate that Sihailongwan Maar Lake is an ideal site for the Anthropocene GSSP.

Abstract: Tyre imprints on the skin are usually considered to be the result of being run over by a motor vehicle. This article reports a traffic accident in which tyre marks on the victim’s skin were caused by a collision rather than by being run over. The mechanism of the injury in this case is analysed and discussed. A 23-year-old male drove a motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol and collided with a sign pillar on the side of the road. Both the victim and the motorcycle careened into the bottom of a tractor-trailer. No witnesses or surveillance videos could confirm the process of the accident. Because tyre imprints were found on the victim’s skin, traffic police believed that he had been run over during the accident. However, forensic autopsy and analysis of the accident process revealed that the true cause of the imprints was a collision between the victim’s body and a tyre.

Abstract: Allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (allo-BMSC)-based tissue-engineered bone (TEB) has great potential for bone defect repair. However, the immunogenicities and biological roles of allo-BMSCs are still controversial. In this study, we established an animal model of critical-sized mandibular defect in beagle dogs and compared the repairing effects of allo-BMSC-based TEB with autogenic BMSC (auto-BMSC)-based TEB without the administration of immunosuppressants. During the first 2 weeks postimplantation, a transient immune response in the allo-BMSC group was detected with an increase in proinflammation cytokines TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-2, a declination of anti-inflammation cytokine IL-10, and an increase in percentages of CD4 + and CD8 + T-cell subsets in peripheral blood. Nevertheless, there was no significant difference in bone union achievement, bone mineral density, and biomechanical properties between the two groups at 12 and 24 weeks postimplantation. Further subcutaneous implantation of allo-BMSCs/scaffold also exhibited the similar transient immune responses in the first 2 weeks postimplantation but followed by a decreased bone formation at 4 and 8 weeks postimplantation. These findings indicate that allo-BMSCs can induce a transient immunoreaction, which may temporally delay the osteogenesis of allo-BMSC/scaffold complex in early stage of in vivo implantation, whereas the long-term engineered bone formation was not affected.

Abstract: To evaluate the role of macrophage infiltration in the differentiation process of ureteral polyps and cancers. Methods This retrospective immunohistochemical study analysed archival samples of pathologically-confirmed specimens of low- and high-grade ureteral cancer, ureteral papilloma and ureteral polyps. The samples were immunohistochemically stained for cluster of differentiation (CD)4, CD8, CD16, CD25, CD56 and CD68 using immunofluorescence in order to identify different T-lymphocyte populations and macrophages. Results A total of 70 specimens were included in the analysis: 21 specimens of ureteral cancer, 17 specimens of ureteral papilloma, and 32 specimens of ureteral polyps. The largest proportion of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells was observed in the low-grade ureteral cancer group and almost none were observed in ureteral papillomas. The largest proportion of CD8+ cytotoxic T-lymphocytes was observed in the ureteral polyps. The largest proportion of CD56+ natural killer cells was detected in the ureteral polyps, with very low levels observed in the other three groups. The largest proportion of CD16+CD68+ macrophages was observed in the high-grade ureteral cancer group, which was significantly higher than that observed in the ureteral papillomas. Conclusions This study revealed that CD16+CD68+ macrophages appear to participate in ureteral neoplastic transformation.

Abstract: A project on electric vehicle sharing has been previously carried out as a demonstration operation in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou and Shenzhen in the People’s Republic of China. The high initial investment caused by the high cost of batteries limits commercialization of an electric-vehicle-sharing model. Therefore, a key problem that the operators must solve is to choose the appropriate battery capacity for shared electric vehicles based on different urban driving cycles. Based on three new energy vehicles (i.e. electric vehicles) for demonstration cities of different scales as represented by Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hefei, a whole-life-cycle evaluation model of economic benefits for shared battery electric vehicles was established in this paper. The optimal battery capacity for different substitution rates was calculated using MATLAB software. Then, the influences that the substitution rate, the urban driving cycle, the average daily travel distance, the service price, the charging price, the battery (cycle) life, the battery pack cost and the government subsidy have on the optimal battery capacity in the life-cycle economic benefit model was explained. Suggestions for the optimal battery capacity are provided for operators in different cities. The results indicate that the purchasing cost, the energy consumption cost and the battery depreciation cost are the three main components of the life-cycle cost, which account for more than 80%. The average daily travel distance and the local government subsidy affect the optimal battery capacity only for certain substitution rates. The life-cycle economic benefits of one shared electric vehicle is found to have the most influence on the service price. This paper suggests that shared battery electric vehicles with different battery sizes of 44.5 kW h, 34.9 kW h and 36.96 kW h are suitable for use in metropolitan cities, in large-sized to medium-sized cities and in medium-sized to small-sized cities respectively, as represented correspondingly by Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hefei.
