Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between parental styles and mental problems among Vietnamese high school students. In total, 16.4 percent of 757 eligible participants reported mental difficulties. Findings showed that being female and in grade 12 were risk factors to mental problems while living in Hue city was likely as a protective factor. The father’s warmth reduced the risk of having mental problems among adolescents, while an overprotective mother increased the risk. There was no correlation between authoritarianism of both mother and father and mental difficulties. These results suggest that a parenting program for parents might reduce the risk of mental problems among Vietnamese youth.

Abstract: Given the rapid expansion in social work education, universities in Vietnam are facing tremendous challenges in organizing effective field practicum. This article explores the current field practicum models in Vietnam, its strengths, challenges and recommendations for enhancement. The study utilized a case-study approach in which focus groups and in-depth interviews were conducted. The key strengths included diverse and comprehensive content, and enthusiasm and support from field supervisors and instructors. The key challenges were lack of qualified field supervisors, loose collaboration between universities and field agencies, and inadequate student assessment methods. Specific recommendations are presented that fit the contexts of Vietnam.

Abstract: In Vietnam, malnutrition remains a public health problem, even though much progress has been made in the last decades. The number of cases of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is more than 200,000 per year. To accelerate the treatment of SAM, community-based treatment with ready-to-use-therapeutic foods (RUTFs) is preferred. However, a locally available and acceptable RUTF for the treatment of SAM was lacking. Objective In a joint effort by the National Institute of Nutrition, UNICEF, and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, a local RUTF was developed and tested. Methods The product was optimalized for impact and acceptability. At the same time, capacity for the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) was developed. Results The local product was found to be highly acceptable and effective. After training of health staff, the product could be introduced in the IMAM program. Conclusions The IMAM program was highly successful in treating children with SAM, with more than 90% of the children recovering. Production capacity of the factory is currently being increased to enable up-scaling of the IMAM program and potential export of the product to countries in the region.

Abstract: In pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), insulin resistance (IR) increases the risk of developing manifest type 2 diabetes mellitus and is associated with complications in both mother and fetus. Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the associations between IR evaluated by 3 indices (namely updated homeostasis model assessment model (HOMA2), QUICKI, and McAuley’s index) and the diabetes risk factors and the fetal growth indices in Vietnamese women with GDM. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 370 women with GDM and 40 healthy pregnant women from January 2015 to May 2019. IR was calculated by HOMA2 (HOMA2-IR), QUICKI, and McAuley’s index. Fetal anthropometric measurements were assessed via ultrasound which was performed and interpreted by ultrasound experts. Results: In the simple regression analysis, McAuley’s index illustrated had statistically significant correlations to the highest number of risk factors of diabetes mellitus compared with HOMA2-IR and QUICKI indices. Moreover, McAuley’s index correlated statistically significantly to the highest number of fetal ultrasound measurements factors such as including biparietal diameter (BPD) ( r = −0.271, P  〈  .001), head circumference (HC) ( r = −0.225, P  〈  .001), abdominal circumference (AC) ( r = −0.214, P  〈  .001), femur length (FL) ( r = −0.231, P  〈  .001), estimated fetal weight (EFW) ( r = −0.239, P  〈  .001) and fetal estimated age ( r = −0.299, P  〈  .001). In the multivariable analysis, the McAuley’s index contributed the greatest to AC (Standardized B of −0.656, P  〈  .001). Conclusion: The McAuley’s index was significantly associated with a higher number of more risk factors for diabetes mellitus as well as fetal ultrasound sonography findings measurements than compared with HOMA2-IR and QUICKI indices.

Abstract: Empirical evidence, regarding the impacts of female leadership on firm’s corrupt level, is lack of studies in various research context. The objective of this study is to assess whether female managers impact negatively or positively on the corrupt behavior of family SMEs (household business) and nonfamily SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises). To do that, this paper used regressions, taken from a sample of 1,720 Vietnamese SMEs (based on the survey data of UNU-WIDER), to compare the impact of female percentage in management board in family and nonfamily businesses in reducing the level of corruption of the firms for the period 2011 to 2015.The findings indicated that first, drawing on socioemotional wealth theory and Vietnam context, family SMEs (household businesses) are more likely to engage in corruption. Second, we also found that female participant in management team can promote firms to be less involved in unethical practices such as bribe. However, the positive role of female managers in reducing corruption engagement is moderated by family control. We used upper echelon theory to suggest that female managers tend to have less managerial discretion in family-controlled organizations. This study has practical contributions, especially for policymakers and owners of household businesses.

Abstract: Mosquito-borne diseases are a consistent problem in Vietnam. Additionally, freshwater snail species are agricultural pests and are known to be intermediate hosts for several parasitic worms. There is a need for new and complementary botanical pesticidal agents for controlling these pests and essential oils have shown promise. In this work, essential oils from 2 species of Callicarpa ( C. rubella and C. sinuata) and 4 species of Premna ( P. chevalieri, P. corymbosa, P. maclurei, and P. tomentosa) were screened for mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus and for molluscicidal activity against 3 freshwater snail species, Gyraulus convexiusculus, Pomacea canaliculata, and Tarebia granifera. Callicarpa rubella essential oil showed exceptional larvicidal activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus with 24-h LC 50 of 9.8 μg/mL. In addition to C. rubella, the essential oils of P. chevalieri and P. tomentosa showed notable molluscicidal activities against P. canaliculata with LC 90 values ≤ 20 μg/mL. These Callicarpa and Premna essential oils were all rich in sesquiterpenes and should be considered for continued investigation as botanical pesticidal agents.

Abstract: To our knowledge, the prevalence, risk factors and distribution of C. trachomatis genotypes are rarely mentioned in Vietnam. This study aimed to find the prevalence, risk factors and distribution of C. trachomatis genotypes in infertile Vietnamese women. Methods Endocervical swabs were collected from infertile women at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vietnam, between January 2020 and December 2021. All samples were analyzed for C. trachomatis presence by Cobas 4800 CT/NG Test. Sequencing methods of ompA gene were used to determine the C. trachomatis genotypes. An approximately 1200 bp ompA fragment was aligned with reference sequences from GenBank to identify the corresponding genotype. Results The prevalence of endocervical C. trachomatis infection was 15.6% of 761 participants. Factors independently associated with CT infection among infertile women, obtained by multivariate analysis, included abnormal vaginal discharge, cervicitis, lower abdominal pain, a history of ectopic pregnancy, having more than one sex partner, and age at first intercourse. Among the samples, genotype E (25.93%) was most frequently found, followed by genotypes D/Da (22.23%), F (13.58%), G/Ga (12.35%), J (12.35%), H (6.17%), K (3.70%), B/Ba (2.47%), and I/Ia (1.23%), respectively. Genotype F was related to types of infertility, and genotype H was associated with a history of miscarriage. Conclusions The present study indicated a high prevalence of C. trachomatis in infertile Vietnamese women. The most common genotypes found in this population were E, D, and F. Our findings suggest that routine screening is necessary for early detection and performance of infection control methods.

Abstract: Multiple micronutrient deficiencies during pregnancy in Vietnam may contribute to poor fetal growth and stunting, which are major determinants of the health and development of future generations. Objective We assessed the effects of prenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation on maternal weight gain during pregnancy, infant birthweight, and height of the child at around 2 years of age. Methods We conducted a nonrandomized, nonblinded, side-by-side effectiveness trial in a normal program setting in three districts in the Red River Delta in the north of Vietnam. Women in one district received the standard iron–folic acid supplement during prenatal care; women in the second district received the multiple micronutrient supplement; in the third district, gender training was provided in addition to the multiple micronutrient supplement. Cluster surveys were carried out in the three districts at the end of the trial to verify low birthweight (LBW) and at around 2 years after the trial to measure children's height and weight, as well as to collect demographic data on the mothers. Results Mean birthweight was higher in the districts receiving multiple micronutrient supplements than in the district receiving iron–folic acid tablets. The mean birthweight was 166 g higher in the district receiving multiple micronutrients and 105 g higher in the district receiving multiple micronutrients with gender training than in the district receiving iron–folic acid (p 〈 .05). The prevalence of LBW children ( 〈 2,500 g) was lower in the district receiving multiple micronutrients (4.0%) and the district receiving multiple micronutrients plus gender training (5.8%) than in the district receiving iron–folic acid (10.6%) (p 〈 .05). Children at around 2 years of age were taller in the district receiving multiple micronutrients (82.66 cm) and the district receiving multiple micronutrients plus gender training (83.61 cm) than in the district receiving iron–folic acid (81.64 cm), and the stunting rates were about 10% lower than in the district receiving iron-folic acid. Conclusions Multiple micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy could be an important intervention to help reduce stunting rates in Vietnam.
