    Abstract: Although Vietnam has promoted the utilisation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) towards HIV elimination targets, adherence to treatment has remained under-investigated. We aimed to describe high-risk behaviours and clinical characteristics by adherence status and to identify the factors associated with non-adherence. We included 426 people living with HIV (PLWH) currently or previously involved in HAART. Most participants were men (75.4%), young (33.6 years), with low income and low education levels. Non-adherent PLWH (11.5%) were more likely to have a larger number of sex partners ( p-value = 0.053), sex without condom use ( p-value = 0.007) and not receive result at hospital or voluntary test centre ( p-value = 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that demographic (education levels), sexual risk behaviours (multiple sex partners and sex without using condom) and clinical characteristics (time and facility at first time received HIV-positive result) were associated with HAART non-adherence. There are differences in associated factors between women (education levels and place of HIV testing) and men (multiple sex partners). Gender-specific programs, changing risky behaviours and reducing harms among PLWH may benefit adherence. We highlight the need to improve the quantity and quality of HIV/AIDS services in Vietnam, especially in pre- and post-test counselling, to achieve better HAART adherence, working towards ending AIDS in 2030.

    Abstract: The surface quality and accuracy of the geometry of the cylindrical rollers are important factors for bearing life. This paper presents effects of machining parameters on the surface roughness, topography and roundness of cylindrical rollers through the lapping and polishing experiments. And then the surface roughness of the cylindrical rollers is optimized. The results found that the surface roughness of rollers is significantly changed in lapping process with different abrasive particle sizes, while the surface roughness has slightly reduced in polishing process. It also indicated that the smoother surfaces with better roughness can be obtained after lapping and polishing process. In addition, the surface roughness of cylindrical rollers is rapidly reduced from Ra of 0.5 µm to Ra of 0.063 µm after the 3-h lapping process and Ra of 0.013 µm after the 1-h polishing process. The surface topography of rollers can be achieved by the smoother surface when loads are from 25 to 35 N in lapping process, and the loads are from 35 to 40 N in polishing process. Finally, the Taguchi method is applied to optimize the surface roughness in polishing process. The result found that the optimal surface roughness achieves 0.015 µm with respect to the time of 35 min and type of 4000# Al 2 O 3 .

    Abstract: Data about the risk factors and pancreatic cancer in developing countries remain limited. We investigated for the first time the role of a number of risk factors (family cancer history, smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, inflammation disease, HBV infection) associated with pancreatic cancer among Vietnamese patients. Methods: We included all patients hospitalized at 4 Northern Vietnamese hospitals (Vietnam National Cancer Hospital, Bach Mai, Viet Duc, Thai Nguyen) and diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during the period from 2017 to 2019. Risk factors of eligible patients were collected and assessed the associations using a matched control study and logistic regression model analysis. Results: We identified 196 patients with diagnosis of pancreatic cancer of which 114 males and 82 females. The average age of the patient at the time of diagnosis was 58.28 years (standard deviation of 12.94, ranging from 25 to 87). Most of patients were diagnosed at advanced stage (85%). Smoking, diabetes, inflammation disease significantly increased the cancer risks (OR and 95% CI were 2.42 (1.38-4.37), 3.09 (1.54-6.68), 2.21 (1.42-3.45), respectively). HBV infection demonstrated a significant link with pancreatic cancer in univariate model (OR = 2.94 (1.08-9.36)), but not in multivariate model. However, cancer family history and alcohol drinkers did not show any significantly increased risk related to pancreatic cancer. Conclusions: Our finding showed smoking, diabetes, inflammation disease significantly increased the risk of pancreatic cancer in Vietnam.

    Abstract: Quantification of plasma cell-free Epstein Barr virus DNA (cf EBV DNA) has been suggested as a promising liquid biopsy assay for screening and early detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the diagnostic value of this assay is currently not known in the population of Vietnam, one of the countries which contributed the most to the NPC cases. Herein, we have reported a highly sensitive quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)-based assay targeting cf EBV DNA for the detection of NPC. A standard curve with linear regression, R 2 = 0.9961 (range: 25-150 000 copies/mL) and a detection limit of 25 copies/mL were obtained using an EBV standard panel provided by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The clinical performance of this assay was assessed using plasma samples obtained from 261 Vietnamese individuals. The optimized qPCR assay detected cf EBV DNA in plasma with a sensitivity of 97.4% and a specificity of 98.2%. The absolute quantitative results of pretreatment cf EBV DNA and patient overall clinical stages were statistically correlated ( P 〈 .05). In summary, the remarkably high sensitivity and specificity of our optimized qPCR assay strongly supports the wide use of cf EBV DNA quantification as a routine noninvasive method in early diagnosis and management of patients with NPC.

    Abstract: Analysis of an antimicrobial extract from the culture broth of the marine-derived actinomycete Streptomyces sp. G261 led to the isolation of a new 1,3-benzodioxole derivative (1), together with 10 known compounds 2-11. The actinomycete strain G261 was isolated from sediment, collected at Cu Lao Cham, Quang Nam in Vietnam. The taxonomic identification of the strain G261 was achieved by analysis of 16SrRNA gene sequences. On the basis of morphological and phylogenetic evidence, the actinomycete strain G261 was assigned to the genus Streptomyces. The structures of the isolated compounds were established by their spectral data analysis, including mass spectrometry, 1-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D-NMR), and 2D-NMR. The structure of 1 was confirmed by comparison of the calculated with experimental 13 C NMR data. Compound 1 exhibited antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 128 and 256 µg/mL, respectively. Whereas, compound 1 had a weak inhibition when tested against 4 cancer cell lines, KB, LU-1, HepG-2, and MCF-7.
