    Abstract: A priori power analyses have become increasingly popular in scientific communities, but the practice has not been widely discussed by HFE researchers. Given the complexity of conducting such analyses, software tools are essential. We review the emergence and current state of power analysis software tools, and use the concept of User-Centered Design as an analytical lens for examining the relationship between researchers’ needs and power analysis tools’ characteristics. Centering on users’ wants and needs, we propose a decision-aiding process to assist researchers in identifying appropriate power analysis tools. This process consists of five user-centered considerations – two functional criteria (software input; software output) and three usability heuristics (learnability; ease of use; accessibility) – which are organized into a workflow. These criteria and heuristics are translated into questions that researchers should go through during the decision process. We illustrate use of the decision-aiding process with three example scenarios and lay out implications for researchers.

    Abstract: This article presents analysis of data from scientific articles and patents to identify the evolving trends and underlying topics in research on humanoid robots. We used topic modelling based on latent Dirichlet allocation analysis to identify underlying topics in sub-areas in the field. We also used social network analysis to measure the centrality indices of publication keywords to detect important and influential sub-areas and used co-occurrence analysis of keywords to visualise relationships among subfields. The research result is useful to identify evolving topics and areas of current focus in the field of humanoid technology. The results contribute to identify valuable research patterns from publications and to increase understanding of the hidden knowledge themes that are revealed by patents.

    Abstract: Docetaxel (DTX) is an effective commercial anticancer agent for chemotherapy in non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), breast cancer, gastric cancer, and prostate cancer, but its adverse effects including edema, neurotoxicity, and hair loss limit its application. To improve the chemotherapeutic efficacy of DTX and reduce adverse effects, combination therapy is one of the alternative methods. So chrysin, which has various biological activities including anticancer effects, was considered. In vitro, the combination of chrysin and DTX was investigated in A549 cells. Increased cytotoxicity, suppressed cellular proliferation, and induced apoptosis were observed with posttreatment of chrysin following DTX treatment. In vivo, chrysin enhanced the tumor growth delay of DTX and increased DTX-induced apoptosis in the A549-derived xenograft model. Furthermore, chrysin prevented DTX-induced edema in ICR mouse. These results indicated that chrysin strengthened the therapeutic efficacy of DTX and diminished the adverse effect of DTX, suggesting chrysin could be exploited as an adjuvant therapy for NSCLC.

    Abstract: It is still unclear whether age is an independent prognostic factor in patients with stage I NSCLC. Methods Five hundred and sixty-nine patients with stage I adenocarinoma who underwent surgical resection as first treatment were included. The effect on overall survival of age, gender, smoking habits, Charlson comorbidity index score (CCIS), type of surgery, tumor size and lymphatic or blood vessel invasion was analyzed. Results When the patients were divided into four groups according to quartiles of age, distributions of gender, smoking habit, CCIS, histology, blood vessel invasion and adjuvant chemotherapy were significantly different among the four groups. Age, gender, smoking habit, CCIS, tumor size and lymphatic and blood vessel invasion were significantly associated with overall survival of the patients in Kaplan-Meier analysis (logrank, P 〈 0.001, P 〈 0.001, P = 0.029, P 〈 0.001, P = 0.001, P = 0.001 and P = 0.007, respectively). Moreover, the highest quartile of age (over 68 years old) was a prominent determinant for a worse prognosis after adjustment for the confounding variables using a Cox proportional hazard model (adjusted hazard ratio = 2.735, 95% confidence interval = 1.623–4.608, P 〈 0.001). Conclusions The findings suggest that age is an important determinant of overall survival in patients with stage I adenocarcinoma. Therefore, age should be considered in classifying the patients into groups of higher or lower risk for death as well as in designing clinical trials.

    Abstract: Immunohistochemistry for haptoglobin (Hp) in the postischemic hippocampus demonstrated an immunoreactivity visible one day after reperfusion and continuing to increase until 14 days after ischemia. The immunoreactivity was most prominent in CA1 and the dentate hilar region, especially in cells with astroglial morphology. Double immunofluorescence histochemistry confirmed colocalization of the Hp and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Furthermore, a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction study confirmed an elevated Hp mRNA level in the postischemic hippocampus. The Hp gene expression was also upregulated in C6 and A-172 glioblastoma cell lines after H 2 O 2 treatment. These findings suggest that Hp is synthesized in reactive astrocytes in response to ischemia-reperfusion injury.

    Abstract: The anti-cholinesterase activity was evaluated of the ethyl acetate fraction of the methanol extract of Myristica fragrans Houtt (Myristicaceae) seeds and of compounds isolated from it by various chromatographic techniques. The chemical structures of the compounds were determined from spectroscopic analyses (NMR data). Thirteen compounds (1—13) were isolated and identified. Compound 8 {[(7S)-8′-(4′-hydroxy-3′-methoxyphenyl)-7-hydroxypropyl]benzene-2,4-diol} showed the most effective activity with an IC 50 value of 35.1 μM, followed by compounds 2 [(8R,8′S)-7′-(3′,4′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-8,8′-dimethyl-7-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-butane] and 11 (malabaricone C) with IC 50 values of 42.1 and 44.0 μM, respectively. This is the first report of significant anticholinesterase properties of M. fragrans seeds. The findings demonstrate that M. fragrans could be used beneficially in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

    Abstract: Oligodendrocytes play a crucial role in creating the myelin sheath that is an important component in neural transmission. In an animal model of transient cerebral ischemia, application of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) has not yet been reported. In this study, the effects of F3.Olig2 transplantation on memory and cognitive dysfunction were investigated in the aged gerbil in which ischemic stroke was induced. To investigate the possible mechanisms underlying repair, changes in the expression of myelin basic protein (MBP), oligodendrocyte-specific protein (OSP), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were examined. Experimental ischemic stroke was induced by occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries in aged gerbils. Gerbils ( n = 31 per group) were randomly divided into three groups: (1) vehicle sham group, (2) vehicle ischemia group, and (3) F3.Olig2 ischemia group. After 1, 3, and 7 days of ischemia–reperfusion (I-R), saline or F3.Olig2 cells (1 × 10 6 cells in 100 μl) were injected into the gerbils intravenously. The gerbils were sacrificed 10 days after I-R for identification of grafted F3.Olig2 cells, and 15 and 30 days after I-R for tissue analysis after conducting passive avoidance and novel object recognition test. Injected F3.Olig2 cells and MBP, OSP, and BDNF were detected by specific antibodies using immunohistochemistry and/or Western blots. Memory and cognition were significantly increased in the F3.Olig2 ischemia group compared with the vehicle ischemia group. In the F3.Olig2 ischemia group, the neurons were not protected from ischemic damage; however, MBP, OSP, and BDNF expressions were significantly increased. Our results show that injection of F3.Olig2 cells significantly improved impaired memory and cognition, which might be related to increased MBP expression via increasing OSP and BDNF expression in the aged gerbil hippocampus following transient cerebral ischemia.

    Abstract: We investigated differences in the prevalence of anosognosia and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) characteristics according to disease severity in patients with early-onset Alzheimer disease (EOAD). Methods: We recruited 616 patients with EOAD. We subdivided participants into 2 groups based on the presence or absence of anosognosia and then again by Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale. We compared the differences in the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) scores according to anosognosia and disease severity. Results: The percentage of patients with anosognosia in each CDR group steadily increased as the CDR rating increased (CDR 0.5 8.6% vs CDR 1 13.6% vs CDR 2 26.2%). The NPI total score was significantly higher in patients with anosognosia in the CDR 0.5 and 1 groups; by contrast, it had no association in the CDR 2 group. Frontal lobe functions were associated with anosognosia only in the CDR 0.5 and 1 groups. After stratification by CDR, in the CDR 0.5 group, the prevalence of agitation ( P = .040) and appetite ( P = .013) was significantly higher in patients with anosognosia. In the CDR 1 group, patients with anosognosia had a significantly higher prevalence of delusions ( P = .032), hallucinations ( P = .048), and sleep disturbances ( P = .047). In the CDR 2 group, we found no statistical difference in the frequency of symptoms between patients with and without anosognosia. Conclusion: These results confirm that the prevalence of anosognosia as well as the individual NPS and cognitive functions associated with it differ according to EOAD severity.

    Abstract: Improving the effects of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) on the demyelination and neurobehavioral function was investigated in an experimental model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Seven-day-old male rats were subjected to hypoxia-ischemia-lipopolysaccharide and intracere-broventricularly transplanted with human ASCs (4 × 10 5 cells/rat) once at postnatal day 10 (PND10) or repeatedly at PND10, 17, 27, and 37. Neurobehavioral abnormalities (at PND20, 30, and 40) and cognitive functions (at PND41–44) were evaluated using multiple test systems. Human ASCs recovered the using ratio of forelimb contralateral to the injured brain, improved locomotor activity, and restored rota-rod performance of HIE animals, in addition to showing a marked improvement of cognitive functions. It was confirmed that transplanted human ASCs migrated to injured areas and differentiated into oligodendrocytes expressing myelin basic protein (MBP). Moreover, transplanted ASCs restored production of growth and neurotrophic factors and expression of decreased inflammatory cytokines, leading to attenuation of host MBP loss. The results indicate that transplanted ASCs restored neurobehavioral functions by producing MBP as well as by preserving host myelins, which might be mediated by ASCs' anti-inflammatory activity and release of growth and neurotrophic factors.
