    Abstract: It is well documented that enhanced garlic (Allium sativum) consumption leads to decrease in the cancer incidences. Diallyl sulfide (DAS), one of the components of garlic, induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis in many cancer cell lines. The present studies are focused on the in vivo effects of DAS on leukemia WEHI-3 cells in the BALB/c mice. We examined the effects of DAS on the cytotoxicity of WEHI-3 cells and results indicated that DAS decreased the percentage of viable WEHI-3 cells and these effects are dose-dependent. We examined the effects of DAS on WEHI-3 in vivo and the results indicated that DAS decreased the percentage of Mac-3 and CD11b, indicating that the differentiation of the precursor of macrophage cells was inhibited. DAS stimulated the percentage of CD3 and CD19, indicating that the differentiation of the precursor of T and B cells promoted. The weights of liver and spleen indicated that DAS decreased the weight of these organs after being compared to the control groups. One of the major characteristic of WEHI-3 leukemia is the enlarged spleen in murine after intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of WEHI-3 cells. In conclusion, DAS affects WEHI-3 cells both in vitro and in vivo.

    Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is an expanding global health problem. Currently, the home management of diabetes is mainly led by a multidisciplinary team based on telemedicine. However, the role nurses play in it remains inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of nurse-led web-based intervention on glycated haemoglobin, blood pressure and lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods An exhaustive systematic literature search was undertaken using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and CINAHL. Two investigators independently extracted data and assessed the quality of the studies by examining the risk of bias and using Modified Jadad Score system. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials that had been published from inception to July 2020, using Review Manager 5.3. Results Eleven randomized controlled trials were selected that included 2063 participants. Meta-analyses results indicated significant effects on not only glycated haemoglobin (pooled mean difference (MD) = –0.40, 95% confidence interval (CI): –0.5 to –0.26, p  〈  0.00001), but also on systolic blood pressure (pooled MD = –1.91, 95% CI: –3.73 to –0.09, p = 0.04) and low density lipoprotein (pooled standardized MD = –0.29, 95% CI: –0.44 to –0.15, p  〈  0.0001). There were no effects of nurse-led web-based intervention on fasting blood glucose, diastolic blood pressure, high density lipoprotein, body mass index and triglycerides. Discussion Nurse-led web-based intervention is a promising way to complement routine clinical care. However, the specific intervention content and intervention media still need to carry out large-scale well-designed randomized controlled trials.     Abstract: Cluster of differentiation molecules are markers of immune cells that have been identified as a potential immunotherapeutic target for cancer treatment. MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that act as tumor suppressors or oncogenes whose importance in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of gastric and colorectal cancers has been widely reported. However, their association with cluster of differentiation molecules in gastrointestinal cancers has not been well studied. Therefore, our study aimed to analyze the relationship between microRNAs and cluster of differentiation molecules in gastrointestinal cancers, and to identify cluster of differentiation molecule-associated microRNAs as prognostic biomarkers for gastrointestinal cancer patients. Methods: Targetscan, Starbase, DIANA microT, and miRDB were used to investigate microRNA profiles that might be correlated with cluster of differentiation molecules in gastrointestinal cancers. Moreover, The Cancer Genome Atlas data analysis was used to investigate the association between cluster of differentiation molecules and microRNA expression in patients with gastric, colon, rectal, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers. The Kaplan–Meier plotter was used to identify the association between overall survival and cluster of differentiation molecule-associated microRNA expression in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Results: miR-200a, miR-559, and miR-1236 were negatively associated with CD86, CD81, and CD160, respectively, in almost all types of gastrointestinal cancers, which were further verified in the in vitro studies by transfecting microRNA mimics in gastric cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic, and esophageal cell lines. Conclusion: Our study showed that miR-200a, miR-1236, and miR-559 are identified as cluster of differentiation-associated microRNAs in gastrointestinal cancers, providing a novel perspective to identify new therapeutic targets for cancer immunotherapy in gastrointestinal cancer patients.

    Abstract: This study investigated categorization of perfectionism subtypes for Chinese undergraduates and the effects of perfectionism subtypes on career outcomes based on two prominent, competing models of perfectionism, the tripartite model and 2 × 2 model. Indices of career outcome were defined with career adaptability (positive) and career decision-making difficulties (negative). The results of both cluster analysis and latent profile analysis coincided with the four-subtype structure of the 2 × 2 model. The result of Bolck–Croon–Hagenaars modeling indicated that the pure high standard subtypes were the most functional while pure discrepancy subtypes were most dysfunctional. Mixed perfectionism subtypes were identified as having high career adaptability but also high risk for career decision-making while nonperfectionism subtypes possess low career decision-making difficulties but also low career adaptability. Based on these findings for perfectionism subtypes, we extrapolate practical recommendations for how this information could be pertinent to career counseling.

    Abstract: Decellularization is the process by which cells are discharged from tissues/organs, but all of the essential cues for cell preservation and homeostasis are retained in a three-dimensional structure of the organ and its extracellular matrix components. During tissue decellularization, maintenance of the native ultrastructure and composition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is extremely acceptable. For recellularization, the scaffold/matrix is seeded with cells, the final goal being to form a practical organ. In this review, we focus on the biological properties of the ECM that remains when a variety of decellularization methods are used, comparing recellularization technologies, including bioreactor expansion for perfusion-based bioartificial organs, and we discuss cell sources. In the future, decellularization–recellularization procedures may solve the problem of organ assembly on demand.

    Abstract: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), at least including Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s diseases, have become the most dreaded maladies because there are no precise diagnostic tools or definite treatments for these debilitating diseases. The increased prevalence and a substantial impact on the social–economic and medical care of NDs propel governments to develop policies to counteract the impact. Although the etiologies of NDs are still unknown, growing evidence suggests that genetic, cellular, and circuit alternations may cause the generation of abnormal misfolded proteins, which uncontrolledly accumulate to damage and eventually overwhelm the protein-disposal mechanisms of these neurons, leading to a common pathological feature of NDs. If the functions and the connectivity can be restored, alterations and accumulated damages may improve. The gene-editing tools including zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats–associated nucleases (CRISPR/CAS) have emerged as a novel tool not only for generating specific ND animal models for interrogating the mechanisms and screening potential drugs against NDs but also for the editing sequence-specific genes to help patients with NDs to regain function and connectivity. This review introduces the clinical manifestations of three distinct NDs and the applications of the gene-editing technology on these debilitating diseases.

    Abstract: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in the invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis of cancer cells. Many agents have been shown to inhibit the cancer cell migration and invasion by suppression of MMPs. 2-(3-Methoxyphenyl)-6,7-methylenedioxoquinolin-4-one (MMEQ) is a derivative compound synthesized from quinolin and the purpose of this study is to determine whether or not cell migration would be reduced in human bladder cancer TSGH8301 cells after MMEQ treatment. Wound healing assay and boyden chamber assay were used in cell migration and invasion determinations. Cell migration and invasion inhibited by MMEQ exerted an inhibitory effect on the sevenless homolog-1 (SOS-1), protein kinase c (PKC), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and Rho A for causing the inhibitions of MMP-2 and -9, and then followed by the inhibitions of invasion and migration. MMEQ also affected FAK, PI3K or inhibited growth factor receptor-bound protein 2 (GRB2), nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) for cell proliferation inhibition. Therefore, MMEQ may serve as a drug in the prevention of tumor metastasis of bladder cancer in the future.

    Abstract: The prevalence of dementia in Singapore is on the rise. Due to the negative perceptions associated with the condition, persons with dementia and their care partners face an increased risk of social isolation and loneliness. One objective of the Arts and Dementia programme offered by the Alzheimer’s Disease Association is to increase inclusivity of persons with dementia in the community. To investigate the impact of the programme on perceptions towards dementia, a mixed-method approach involving 75 artists and volunteers was conducted. Findings from the Approaches to Dementia Questionnaire revealed that participants involved in the programme had significantly more positive perceptions than new volunteers. A thematic analysis was conducted on the focus group discussions and four themes were identified: (1) meaningful and rewarding interactions, (2) focus on abilities, (3) learning process and (4) more can be done. These findings suggest that meaningful experiences during the programme may be a driving force behind positive perceptions towards dementia.

    Abstract: According to the reality of China, we divide Internet finance into four parts as Internet payment services, Internet financing services, Internet financial management services, and online banking business of traditional commercial banks, to discuss the impact of Internet finance on the profit efficiency of commercial banks. Our theoretical analysis shows that the external impact of Internet finance will reduce the profit of commercial banks, but Internet financing and Internet financial management have less influence, and the financial Internet business can improve the profit efficiency of commercial banks to some extent. An empirical test of Chinese data provides support for these predictions, it suggests that the estimated impact is significant and robust. Furthermore, differences in ownerships and profit efficiency of commercial banks will be at work.
