    Abstract: We investigated the relationship between neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and restenosis in patients with femoropopliteal arterial disease following drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty. Patients (n = 120) were divided into 3 groups according to the development of restenosis and the time of restenosis occurrence. The postoperative NLR was higher in the late-restenosis group than that in the no-restenosis group (3.53 vs 2.70; p = .011). In multivariate logistic analysis, postoperative NLR was an independent predictor of late restenosis (odds ratio: 1.404, 95% confidence interval: 1.073–1.839; p = .014). The postoperative NLR cutoff value for predicting late restenosis was 2.78 with a sensitivity of 80.8% and a specificity of 53.2% (area under the ROC curve was .666 (95% CI: .541–.791, p = .010). The incidence of late restenosis in the NLR ≥2.78 group was higher than that in the NLR 〈 2.78 group (32.3 vs 9.1%; p = .002). Postoperative NLR is independently associated with late restenosis in patients treated with DCB for femoropopliteal arterial disease.

    Abstract: Refractory ascites is uncommon in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) but it usually makes the patient physically and psychologically handicapped. Two uremic ADPKD patients in our hospital developed refractory ascites after 1 year on hemodialysis. The refractory ascites was due to portal hypertension, which was caused primarily by portal outflow obstruction due to the numerous enlarged cysts in the liver and secondarily by increased portal inflow. We attempted continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) to treat the 2 patients and obtained satisfactory results. Not only was the refractory ascites well controlled, but also the portal hypertension disappeared. Based on our experience, we think CAPD could serve as a very effective therapy to treat the refractory ascites of portal hypertension due to polycystic liver in uremic ADPKD patients.

    Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study on the improvement of denim fabric appearance by reducing the residual torque of weft yarns. In this paper, 100% cotton low torque yarns of linear density 84 tex and 58 tex with different twist levels were produced by a new method of producing low torque yarns on a modified ring spinning machine. The results from the experiments show that the low torque yarns possess lower yarn snarling turns. Based on the mechanism analysis of ‘small snake’ pattern, the low torque ring yarns were applied to the denim fabric to improve fabric smoothness appearance. The experimental study demonstrates that the ‘small snake’ pattern of the denim fabrics has been greatly decreased by using the low residual torque ring yarns as weft yarns. Objective measurements of the low stress mechanical and surface properties of denim fabrics using low torque and conventional yarns were conducted. The results show that the denim fabric using the low torque ring yarns as weft yarns presents a smoother and more even surface. Moreover, a multiple comparisons LSD test of fabric properties indicates that there is no significant difference on tensile strength and tearing strength between fabric samples using the low torque ring yarns and conventional ring yarns with normal twist level as weft yarns, respectively. In addition, the experimental results demonstrate that the ‘small snake’ pattern of the fabric decreased with the reduction of weft yarn snarling.

    Abstract: This paper presents a theoretical analysis of fiber tension distribution within a ring spun yarn without relaxation. Yarn residual torque is determined on the basis of the translation of fiber tension at the spinning triangle, as presented in the first part of this series of papers, into the fiber tension within the yarn. The results from numerical simulations indicate that, with fiber buckling, the yarn exhibits a lower average fiber tension and, thus, a much reduced yarn residual torque than that without fiber buckling. Comparison with experiments confirmed that fiber buckling exists in ring yarns while the assumption of no fiber buckling is not realistic. Generally, a low yarn twist results in low average fiber tension in the yarn and, thus, a reduced yarn residual torque. A symmetrical spinning triangle leads to a slightly higher yarn residual torque than a right-angle spinning triangle when the yarn counts and twists are identical and fiber buckling occurs.

    Abstract: Levistilide A (C 24 H 28 O 4 , molecular weight = 380.48) derived from Angelica sinensis (Danggui) has been reported to inhibit hepatic stellate cell proliferation. This study investigated the effects of levistilide A on liver fibrosis relating to angiogenesis, particularly on the characteristic change in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. LX-2 cells were activated by TGF-β1, and the human hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells (HHSECs) were induced by endothelial cell growth supplement. Cell viability was detected using a methylthiazoldiphenyl–tetrazolium bromide assay; F-actin was visualized through the fluorescence probe method; cell proliferation was examined using the EdU kit; antiangiogenesis activity was assessed using the tube formation assay and transgenic zebrafish model. To verify the results in vivo, rats were subcutaneously injected with CCl 4 twice a week for six weeks to duplicate the liver fibrosis model and then treated with 10 mL/kg of normal saline, 4 mg/kg of sorafenib, and 3 and 6 mg/kg of levistilide A for three weeks from the fourth week. Collagen deposition was detected through Sirius Red staining; liver microvasculature was examined through vWF labeling and X-ray 2D imaging; sinusoidal fenestrations were observed through scanning electron microscopy; collagen I, α-SMA, CD31, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and VEGF-R2 were detected through Western blotting. Our results indicated that levistilide A attenuated LX-2 cell activation and HHSEC proliferation. The ability of HHSECs to form tubelike structures in Matrigel was inhibited, and the number of functional vessels in transgenic zebrafish decreased. In in vivo experiments, levistilide A reduced collagen deposition and the number of new microvessels; ameliorated sinusoid capillarization; and downregulated the expression of CD31, VEGF, and VEGF-R2. These findings suggest that levistilide A can inhibit liver fibrosis through antiangiogenesis by alleviating sinusoid capillarization via the VEGF signaling pathway. Impact statement Levistilide A has been reported to inhibit hepatic stellate cell (HSC) proliferation. In this study, we further investigated the mechanisms of levistilide A on liver fibrosis relating to angiogenesis, particularly on the characteristic change in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. The cell models of HSC and liver sinusoidal endothelial cell and CCl 4 induced liver fibrosis model were used. These results suggest that levistilide A can inhibit liver fibrosis through antiangiogenesis by alleviating sinusoid capillarization via the vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathway. The effect of levistilide A on liver fibrosis was confirmed, and its detailed mechanism was also discussed. These findings suggest that levistilide A may be a great potential drug for treating liver fibrosis through antiangiogenesis, and this effect will be verified in other fibrotic animal model studies or by clinical trials.

    Abstract: A combined control strategy with an adaptive inverse control (AIC) and an inverse frequency response function (IFRF) equalization technique is proposed for the electrohydraulic shaking table (EST) system. The control purpose is to improve the accuracy of time waveform replication. In contrast to the iterative compensation through repetitive excitations control approach of industrial EST controllers, the proposed control strategy utilizes an IFRF of the EST system for extending the EST system frequency bandwidth and obtaining asymptotic reference tracking, and employs a variable tap-length filtered-x least-mean-squares algorithm to adaptively tune the time-domain drive signal and further improve the position and acceleration tracking performance of the EST system. Thus, the proposed combined control strategy is designed to combine the merits of IFRF and AIC. The procedures of the proposed control strategy are programmed in MATLAB/Simulink, and then compiled to a real-time PC with Microsoft Visual Studio.NET for implementation. The simulated and experimental results show that this control strategy achieves satisfactory position and acceleration waveform replication accuracy.

    Abstract: The associations between several blood inflammatory indicators and risk of vascular plaques remain inconclusive. A total of 4596 native rural residents in Southeast China were enrolled from the Fuqing cohort study. Blood cell counts and their composite indexes including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and 2 novel indicators (systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and systemic immune inflammation response index (SIRI)) were considered as inflammatory indicators. Common carotid and femoral intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaques were assessed using B-mode ultrasound. Unconditional or multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate potential associations. The prevalence of multiple femoral plaques (defined as IMT ≥1.5 mm) was significantly higher among participants with the highest tertile of total leukocyte count (odds ratio, 1.78), neutrophil count (1.88), monocyte count (2.51), platelet count (1.68), NLR (1.93), PLR (1.57), SII (2.10), and SIRI (2.94). Higher levels of neutrophil count, platelet count, NLR, and SII were also found to have significant linear dose-response relationships with the prevalence of stenosis, especially in femoral arteries. In conclusion, several blood inflammatory biomarkers may contribute to, or are associated with, the presence of IMT ≥1.5 mm or stenosis especially in femoral arteries.

    Abstract: Low-torque ring yarn spinning is a modified-ring spinning technology with the false-twisting devices attached on the conventional ring spinning machine. The introduction of the false-twisting operation gives low-torque yarn a new fiber and yarn configuration, and thus causes different characteristics of low-torque yarn fabric from that of conventional ring and rotor yarn fabrics. In this paper, a comparative study has been carried out to evaluate the performance of jeans and trousers produced by low-torque yarns to conventional ring and rotor yarns. The results from the objective measurements of fabric performance indicate that the tensile and tear strength of low-torque ring yarn fabrics in the weft direction is similar to or only slightly lower than that of fabrics using conventional ring yarns with a normal twist level as the weft yarns, but they are much higher than that of the fabrics using rotor yarns. Compared to the fabrics produced from conventional ring and rotor yarns, the low-torque ring yarn fabrics exhibit higher compression energy (WC) and lower mean deviation of friction (MMD) and achieve higher values in fabric Numeri and Fukurami. The subjective evaluation of jeans and trousers through wear trials further confirms that low-torque yarn jeans have significant advantages of a better appearance in jean smoothness, less ‘small snake’ patterns, a more prominent slub effect and better overall quality than the conventional ring and rotor yarn jeans. The low-torque yarn trousers also show better luster, smoothness appearance and overall quality than the conventional ring and rotor yarn trousers.

    Abstract: Dietary salt and fluid restriction is important in controlling fluid balance in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). However, it is often difficult to monitor patients’ dietary total sodium intake (TSI). Usually, total sodium removal (TSR), the sum of urinary sodium removal (USR) and dialysate sodium removal (DSR), is suggested to represent TSI. In the present study, we investigated the reliability of using TSR as a surrogate to TSI in CAPD patients. Methods 40 clinically stable CAPD patients were closely followed for 3 months. Their TSI, USR, DSR, and fluid status were measured twice: at baseline and at the end of this study respectively. Fluid status was evaluated by bioimpedance analysis. Patients with increased sodium intake (group ISI) or decreased sodium intake (group DSI) (both 〉 0.5 g/day or 〉 21.74 mmol/day elemental sodium) were included in this study. Results There were 15 patients in group ISI and 9 patients in group DSI. During the follow-up, although TSI increased in group ISI and decreased in group DSI ( p 〈 0.05), there were no significant changes in USR, DSR, or TSR in either group. No relationship was found between TSI and TSR. Changes in weight, blood pressure, urine volume, ultra-filtration, and small solute removal (Kt/V and creatinine clearance) were not statistically significant between the two groups. Fluid status deteriorated in group ISI and improved in group DSI ( p 〈 0.05). Conclusions Our study suggests that changes in total sodium intake do not lead to proportionate changes in total sodium removal in CAPD patients. Therefore, TSR (the sum of USR and DSR) should be used cautiously to monitor TSI in this patient population.
