Abstract: Evidence for the timings of inter-hemispheric climate fluctuations during the Holocene is important, with mountain glacier moraine systems routinely used as a proxy for climate. In New Zealand such evidence for glacier expansion during the late Holocene is fragmentary and is limited to glaciers in a narrow zone within the Southern Alps. Here, we present the first evidence for late-Holocene glacier expansion on the North Island of New Zealand in the form of two unconsolidated debris ridges on the south side of the stratovolcano, Mt Taranaki/Mt Egmont, at ~1920 m a.s.l. The two ridges are aligned north–south along the western and eastern sides of a small basin (Rangitoto Flat), which is formed between the main Taranaki cone (to the north), and the parasitic cone of Fanthams Peak (to the south). The approximate age of the ridges is constrained by dated eruptive events and the relationship between ridge locations and the spatial positioning of adjacent volcanic landforms. We propose the ridges formed as two lateral moraines on the margins of a cirque glacier during the final construction phase of Fanthams Peak between 3.3 and 0.5 ka BP, during late-Holocene time. This time interval accords with published cosmogenic 10 Be dating of moraine-building episodes in the Southern Alps, indicating the Mt Taranaki moraines are a response to the same regional climatic forcings.

Abstract: Seven typical commercial energy dispersion x-ray analyzers were evaluated for application to the measurement of elemental concentration in polluted water. Sensitivity and detection limits were measured on single- (or dual-) element standards. Results for 400-sec counting intervals indicate that the better energy dispersive analyzers have limits of detection between 10 and a few hundred µg/cm 2 . Many pollutants in natural water are present at 〉 10 ppb, which means that adequate material can be obtained from 100 to 1000 ml samples; some elements of interest such as Cd and Sn are generally present at 〈 1 ppb, which makes practical detection marginal for the energy dispersion method. When x-ray calibration curves were prepared from individual-element gravimetric standards and used to analyze multiple-element samples (also prepared gravimetrically), the agreement between x-ray and gravimetric results showed an average relative deviation of 16%.

Abstract: The integral reflection coefficient R was measured for the (200) planes in LiF using a double crystal spectrometer over the wavelength range 0.7–2.1 Å. For cleaved LiF, R was about 0.7 × 10 −4 rads compared to 0.3 × 10 −4 calculated for the theoretically perfect crystal case. After abrading with 1.5–20 μ carborundum, R increased to 2.90 × 10 −4 at the 0.7-Å end of the range and to 3.68 × 10 −4 at the 2.1-Å end. For a flexed and reflattened crystal, R increased further to 9.45X10 −4 at the 0.7-Å end of the range but was not improved over the abraded crystal at the 2.1-Å end. Theoretical R values for mosaic graphite were compared with LiF. The value for graphite at 1.66 Å was 4.5 times higher than that calculated for mosaic LiF and 1.3 times higher than the measured graphite values of Gould, Bates, and Sparks. It appears that one can approximate theoretical mosaic crystals by either distorting a nearly perfect crystal such as LiF or by orienting powder crystallites as in the case of graphite.

Abstract: We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive single surgeon series of 57 Ascension pyrocarbon proximal interphalangeal joint arthroplasties, with a mean follow-up of 7.1 years (range 2 years to 11 years 6 months). We assessed the ranges of motion, deformity, stability and pain of the operated joints, grip strength of the hand and patient satisfaction. Of the cases, 44 were for osteoarthritis, five for rheumatoid arthritis and eight for post-traumatic arthritis. The median post-operative active arc of motion was from 0° to 60°. The median post-operative visual analogue pain score was 0.3 out of ten. Thirty six of the joints had no complications; 14 had minor complications (squeak, slight swan neck); three required early reoperation (joint release, flexor tenodesis); and five required implant removal. A total of 69% of our patients would have the same operation if they had to make the decision again. The Kaplan-Meier survival method estimates the mean implant survival to be 10.7 years (95% confidence intervals 9.96–11.37 years). All five failures occurred during the first 2 years. Level of evidence 4 (Case-series).

Abstract: To assess the impact on deep vein thrombosis (DVT) protocol violations of the introduction of a label attached to the patient's drug chart, which specifically allows low-dose subcutaneous heparin or thromboembolic deterrent stockings (TEDS) to be prescribed as appropriate. Design: An audit study. Setting: Department of General Surgery of a District General Hospital in the United Kingdom. Method: All adult general surgical inpatients on a Weekday were studied. Staff were not forewarned of the studies. Patient details and risk factors for DVT were noted. Details of administered DVT prophylaxis were recorded. In total four separate studies were undertaken, namely: with original protocols (I), with refined protocol 1 and 3 years later (II, III) and finally after introduction of the label (IV). Results: Protocol violations were defined as being ‘acceptable’ or ‘unacceptable’. Raising awareness between studies I and II reduced acceptable violations to zero. There was no statistically significant reduction in unacceptable violations (24 in 80 patients, 1; 17 in 75, II; 13 in 60, III). In study IV, following introduction of the label, there were only 6 violations in 51 patients ( p 〈 0.02). Conclusion: Combining increased awareness with the attachment of a label to the drug chart reduced unacceptable violations by 63%.

Abstract: Calculation methods for quantitative analysis, energy dispersion, and inhomogeneous samples are current areas in x-ray analysis which offer hope of reducing analysis costs. Other areas which extend the capabilities of x-ray analysis include improved analyzer crystals, diffraction gratings, and effects of valence on spectral lines. Electron spectrometry promises to be a valuable technique for low atomic number elements.
