Abstract: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the value of plasma endostatin for predicting 30-day mortality of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). Methods Patients who underwent non-cardiac major surgery and developed AKI in the first 48 hours after admission to the intensive care unit were consecutively included. Concentrations of plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (Cys C), and endostatin were measured at three time points: 0, 24, and 48 hours after the AKI diagnosis. Clinical patient characteristics were recorded after AKI was diagnosed. Results A total of 256 new-onset AKI patients were enrolled. Of these, 48 (18.7%) patients died within 30 days. The difference in plasma endostatin values between 0 and 24 hours (ΔEndostatin-24h) yielded the best area under the curve (AUC) of 0.747 for predicting 30-day mortality in AKI patients; NGAL and Cys C achieved AUC of 0.672 and 0.647, respectively. The predictive AUC increased to 0.833 when ΔEndostatin-24h was combined with sequential organ failure assessment score and AKI classification. Conclusion Dynamic plasma endostatin is useful for predicting 30-day mortality in AKI patients. The predictive power of dynamic plasma endostatin can be significantly improved when it is combined with clinical patient data.

Abstract: Compression therapy with the use of graduated compression stockings (GCSs) is a common treatment strategy for chronic venous disease (CVD). However, there is no uniform and objective standard to assess adherence to the use of GCSs. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a GCS Compliance Scale (GCSAS) to fill gaps in internationally recognized comprehensive scales and provide a useful tool for future research. Methods The items included in the GCSAS were based on a review of the literature and open-ended interviews with experts, who screened the initial items using an item-level content validity index. Then, pilot tests were conducted three times with 50 participants. After exclusion of redundant and cross-loading items by exploratory factor analysis, 290 subjects were recruited to evaluate the reliability and validity of the proposed GCSAS. Analyses included internal consistency, test–retest reliability, split-half reliability, construct validity, criterion validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Results The final GCSAS consisted of 17 items and 5 dimensions. The results of the exploratory factor analysis indicated that the variances of each factor explained were 22.03%, 14.85%, 14.74%, 14.16%, and 13.35%, and all 5 factors explained 79.13% of the variance among the 17 items. The factor loadings of all items were 〉 0.7. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the indices were adequate. A significant positive correlation was found between the GCSAS and the Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study - Quality of Life questionnaire scores (r = 0.76, p 〈 0.001). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.90, test–retest reliability was 0.81, and split-half reliability was 0.92. Conclusions The GCSAS showed good validity and reliability to assess compliance with the use of GCSs among patients with CVD.

Abstract: In prior research, intrathecal tigecycline was successfully used to treat central nervous system infection by extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. However, little is known about its safe dose and adverse reactions. This study reports the case of a 28-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with central nervous system infection by extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii after the removal of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Intravenous and intrathecal tigecycline were administrated simultaneously. Spinal arachnoiditis was discovered after nine doses of intrathecal tigecycline. Spinal arachnoiditis was resolved after discontinuation of the antibiotic. This is the first report of an adverse reaction to intrathecal tigecycline. The case was complicated by spinal arachnoiditis, which obstructed the assessment of cerebrospinal fluid. The appropriate dose and administration schedule of intrathecal tigecycline remain to be determined.

Abstract: Total meniscectomy leads to knee osteoarthritis in the long term. The poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffold is a promising material for meniscal tissue regeneration, but cell-free scaffolds result in relatively poor tissue regeneration and lead to joint degeneration. Hypothesis: A novel, 3-dimensional (3D)–printed PCL scaffold augmented with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) would offer benefits in meniscal regeneration and cartilage protection. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: PCL meniscal scaffolds were 3D printed and seeded with bone marrow–derived MSCs. Seventy-two New Zealand White rabbits were included and were divided into 4 groups: cell-seeded scaffold, cell-free scaffold, sham operation, and total meniscectomy alone. The regeneration of the implanted tissue and the degeneration of articular cartilage were assessed by gross and microscopic (histological and scanning electron microscope) analysis at 12 and 24 weeks postoperatively. The mechanical properties of implants were also evaluated (tensile and compressive testing). Results: Compared with the cell-free group, the cell-seeded scaffold showed notably better gross appearance, with a shiny white color and a smooth surface. Fibrochondrocytes with extracellular collagen type I, II, and III and proteoglycans were found in both seeded and cell-free scaffold implants at 12 and 24 weeks, while the results were significantly better for the cell-seeded group at week 24. Furthermore, the cell-seeded group presented notably lower cartilage degeneration in both femur and tibia compared with the cell-free or meniscectomy group. Both the tensile and compressive properties of the implants in the cell-seeded group were significantly increased compared with those of the cell-free group. Conclusion: Seeding MSCs in the PCL scaffold increased its fibrocartilaginous tissue regeneration and mechanical strength, providing a functional replacement to protect articular cartilage from damage after total meniscectomy. Clinical Relevance: The study suggests the potential of the novel 3D PCL scaffold augmented with MSCs as an alternative meniscal substitution, although this approach requires further improvement before being used in clinical practice.

Abstract: The foaming of PP has encountered challenges because of its low melt strength and semi-crystalline characteristics. Introducing long chain branching (LCB) onto the PP backbone and the addition of particles as cell nucleating agent are the commonly used methods to improve the cell structure of PP foams. In this paper, clay-supported sodium benzoate (NaB-OMMT) was prepared from Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) via the partial ion exchange reaction with surfactant and subsequent reaction with benzoic acid. The as prepared NaB-OMMTs were then applied to prepare LCBPP/NaB-OMMT nanocomposites and their foams. The dispersion state of clay, crystallization behaviors and rheological properties of the nanocomposites, as well as the cell structure and compression properties of the foams were investigated. The results show that clay layers are mostly exfoliated in the nanocomposites with low NaB-OMMT content, while intercalated layers dominant with the content reaches 2% or higher. The melting temperature of the nanocomposites decreases and the crystallinity increases, while the spherulite size decreases compared to LCBPP. The melt viscosity and elasticity of nanocomposites increase significantly when the content of NaB-OMMT reaches 2% or higher. LCBPP/NaB-OMMT nanocomposites foams exhibit higher cell density, smaller cell size and its standard deviation. Therein, the foam with 1% of NaB-OMMT shows the maximum cell density and the minimum cell size. It is concluded that the cell structure of the foam is highly dependent on the content, dispersion state and structure of the cell nucleating agent. When NaB is supported on well dispersed and exfoliated clay layers, the cell nucleation efficiency is significantly enhanced. The compression properties of the foams depend on their cell structures and exhibit the similar variation trend with the latter with the content of NaB-OMMT increasing.

Abstract: This study aimed to determine whether red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with coronary calcification. A total of 4796 patients who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography and subsequent invasive coronary angiography were consecutively enrolled. Coronary artery calcium score (CACS), demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected from electronic medical records. RDW were expressed in two forms, as a coefficient of variation (CV) or as a standard deviation (SD). Multivariable ordinal logistic regression was used to investigate the association of RDW with CACS grades (CACS 0–99, 100–399, 400–999, and 〉 1000). A significant association was found between elevated RDW-SD and higher CACS grades after full adjustment (adjusted OR per 1-SD increase: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.05–1.18; P 〈 .001), while no significant association was found between RDW-CV and CACS grades. When RDW-SD was analyzed as a categorical variable, it was primarily the 4 th quartile of RDW-SD that was associated with elevated CACS grades compared with the 1 st quartile (adjusted OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.07–1.46; P = .006), while the 2 nd and 3 rd quartiles showed no significantly higher risk. RDW-SD is a more robust biomarker for coronary calcification compared with RDW-CV.

Abstract: This study uses coir from agricultural waste, electromagnetic shielding carbon fiber, impact-resistant polypropylene (PP), and methylmaleic anhydride- grafted PP (MA- g-PP) to make wood plastic composites (WPCs). According to the experimental results, when coir and carbon fiber are at a ratio of 3:12, the resulting WPC exhibits an maximum electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) of −25 dB, which reaches the protective grade of staple merchandise. At fibers ratio of 3:12, the tensile strength is improved by 10% more than at ratio of 15:0; and the increased flexural strength is by 20% accordingly. A multiblending process is used to simulate the recycling and explores its thermodestruction of the resulting WPC. With a ratio of 3:12, the WPC still has an EMSE of −25 dB at nine cycles of multiblending; however, its tensile and flexural strengths both decrease by 10%.

Abstract: The capacity of charge storage for supercapacitor depends on the size of the electrode surface area and the active material on the electrodes. In this article, we fabricate the three-dimensional microelectrodes with SU-8 photoresist based on the microelectromechanical system technology to increase the electrode surface area and to carry more active materials on the electrodes. The three-dimensional microelectrode was directly prepared by the method of anodic electrodeposition. Its surface and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge current are also used to test the electrochemical characteristics of the manganese oxide electrodes. When the discharge density is 0.5 mA cm −2 , the areal capacitance for the fabricated three-dimensional microelectrodes with microstructure and the two-dimensional planar microelectrodes without microstructure is 3.68 mF cm −2 and 1.0 mF cm −2 , respectively. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional microelectrode structure prepared with microelectromechanical system technology can effectively increase the electrode surface area and carry more electroactive materials, thereby enhancing the charge storage capacity of the electrodes.

Abstract: Asthma–chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap (ACO) is poorly recognized in China. Our study determined the distribution of ACO and its clinical characteristics among patients (aged ⩾40 years) with airflow limitation at Chinese tertiary hospitals. Methods: This cross-sectional, non-interventional study (NCT02600221), conducted between December 2015 and October 2016 in 20 Tier-3 Chinese hospitals, included patients aged ⩾40 years with post-bronchodilator (BD) FEV 1 /FVC 〈 0.7. The primary variable was distribution of ACO in adults with post-BD forced expiratory volume /forced vital capacity (FEV 1 /FVC) 〈 0.7 based on Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2015 and 2017 reports. Other variables included determination of characteristics of ACO and its clinical recognition rate. Results: In 2003 patients (mean age 62.30 ± 9.86 years), distribution of ACO, COPD and asthma were 37.40%, 48.50% and 14.10%, respectively. Proportions of patients with A, B, C and D grouping were 11.70%, 31.00%, 6.90% and 50.30% as per GOLD 2017, whereas they were 15.10%, 51.10%, 3.60% and 30.20% as per GOLD 2015. Similar clinical symptoms were reported in all three groups. A higher percentage of ACO patients presented with dyspnea, wheezing and chest tightness. Compared with the COPD group, a greater proportion of ACO patients reported wheezing (74.6% and 65.40%), while a lower proportion in the ACO group reported cough (79.40% versus 82.70%) and expectoration (76.50% versus 81.60%). Blood eosinophil count ⩾0.3 × 10 9 /L was observed in 34.6% of ACO patients. The clinical recognition rate of ACO was 31.4%. Conclusion: Despite ACO affecting two-fifths of the study population, the initial diagnosis rate was low at 6% in China, thus warranting concerted efforts to improve ACO diagnosis.
